Apple TV is NOT Full Screen

My Apple TV stopped showing anything in full screen.  It is plugged into an HDMI port on my TV.  None of the apps, such as Netflix, or movies thru AirPlay play in full screen.  I have tried all of the settings, including a total reset of the Apple TV device, turning the overscanning on and off, changing the resolutions, etc, but none of this changed anything. All of the movies I play thru iTunes play in full screen, but they will NOT play in full screen when I play them on my TV. Because I have an 80 inch tv, the black cropping is about 12 to 24 inches around the entire video!
It used to work and I can't think of anything I changed. Same TV, same settings on tv, same HDMI port, etc. It just stopped playing in full screen!! Extremely frustrating.
Thanks

Hi AC,
Thanks for the reply.
Both the TV and AppleTV have been set to auto for the past year or two.  I messed with several resolutions on both TV and AppleTV, but obviously couldn't figure out a resolution combo to get it working. I put them both back to auto for now.  BTW, the 'auto' setting typically puts the res at 720 and 60hz.
Are there any known issues with AppleTV and full screen? It looks like there are several people having similar issues.
Thanks
Set Aspect ratio on TV to 16:9, does tha twork for some ocntent?

  • IPhoto 6 slideshows not full screen!!!

First of all, as this problem has not changed since iPhoto 5.02 on OS X 10.3.9, let me provide you with some background...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1425902&#1425902
Now, let me detail the problem again. I have a Mac Mini 1.25 Ghz with 512 MB RAM connected to a 20" Apple Cinema Display (aluminum) running at its native resolution of 1680 x 1050. Prior to iPhoto version 5.02, if I watched a slideshow, either by clicking the "Play" button on an album or creating a full fledged slideshow, the pictures in the slideshow would be fit to the width of my display and then cropped on the top and bottom so that the picture would fill all the real-estate on my display. I believe this may have only been the case when viewing with Ken Burns effect enabled... in any case it was exactly the way that I wanted it to work. After updating to iPhoto 5.02 and on every subsequent version of iPhoto all the way unitl iPhoto 6, this is not the behavior. Now, black bars are inserted on the left and right of my display and the photo is displayed in a box in the center that fills the height of the display and is approximately 4:3 in aspect ratio. No combination of settings for the automatic ken burns effect, scale pictures to fit screen, or slideshow format settings have yeided a result that fills the entire screen... most make it look worse. The only thing that seems to help is lowering the resolution of the display from the native of 1680 x 1050 to 1024 x 768 or something similar. Obviously this deteriorates the quality of the images.
Apparently, this was a design decision made by apple...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301667
First of all, it makes no sense to me that iPhoto should decide my computer isn't capable of displaying full screen slideshows when it was perfectly capable of doing so prior to iPhoto 5.02. Secondly, the proposed work around is ridiculous. The amount of time and effort needed to produce a QT movie for each slideshow you want to show full screen greatly reduces the functionality of the otherwise awesome slideshow features... not to mention it greatly reduces the quality of the slideshow.
I am posting to again make it known that this is still an issue for many users in the latest version of iPhoto. People still want it fixed. And many people with affected computers might not even know that iPhoto is supposed to display full screen slideshows if you want them.
Now, I apologize in advance for the bold I'm about to use, but this is the most important part of this post and I hope someone at Apple reads it...
Make an option in iPhoto to enable full screen slideshows even on computers that the program deems incapable!
That way users can accept your automatic determination of this capability, or they can judge for themselves whether or not full screen slideshows are worth a "potential" degradation in performance. You can even worn them once when they enable the option that it may cause decreased performance on their hardware. That way they'll know you tried.
Ok, there... now that that is out of my system, does anyone else have any ideas or would like to add something?
    Mac Mini 1.25 Ghz G4, 512 MB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I take a lot of pictures with 2-3 digital cameras (as a hobby). I use my old 400MHz G4 TiBook as my picture bank when I travel. I got very frustrated when I realized that the screen resolution is set to 800*600 when you do a slideshow in iPhoto, and there is no way to change that.
This is especially bothering when the pictures are taken with my DSLR, but looking at pictures from a 5 MB camera on a 0,5 MB resolution screen is a drag in any case.
I think that I have found a solution to this, however. It would be nice if someone else could try to verify my results. Very simple:
    - Close iPhoto and get a plist editor (I used PlistEdit Pro which I found in Macupdate).
    - With the editor, open the iPhoto preferences file: /Users/Your_Userame/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist
    - There's a property called SlideshowFixedScreenRes close close to the end of the file. Change it's value from NO to YES and save the plist file. Relaunch iPhoto.
This worked very well with the TiBook. Your mileage may vary, though. If you find that it works for you, please let the others know.
If this preference property really is the legitimate place for setting this, it makes me wonder why Apple is so arrogant that they don't give us a switch somewhere for this.
NOTE: If you try this the risk is yours. I don't think that the risk in this case is very severe however - if you throw the iPhoto plist file in the Trash it will be rebuilt when you relaunch iPhoto.
    Best regards, Jukka

  • HT1245 Why does my caller I.D. photos show as a small thumbnail in the upper right corner and not full screen? I have used both photos I have synced and photos I have taken, yet others have full screen photo I.D.'s.

Why does my caller I.D. photos show as a small thumbnail in the upper right corner and not full screen? I have used both photos I have synced and photos I have taken, yet others have full screen photo I.D.'s. I have looked onlime at several threads and there are no real answers as to what I need to do or am doing wrong.

I am also having this issue.
I've just spoken to someone in the Apple Support Centre who advised me that since the product is in beta, he is unable to assist. I wanted to find out whether someone was able to delete the data for me, or 'reset' the photos app somehow. This apparently cannot be done. He suggested I provide feedback via the feedback page, which I will do, but to be honest doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence in the issue being fixed.
I also deactivated the service and waited the 30 days for the pictures to be deleted - this should have been completed in mid-January. Instead, my iCloud.com Photos page is now showing the photos that should have been deleted as grey squares, just as you described. I am also unable to delete these photos; every time I try, I get the same message about a server error.
I am also unable to disable the service by enabling and then disabling it on my iPhone. Each time I have tried this it hangs on uploading for several hours, with the progress bar not moving at all. When I disable it on my iPhone, the web app remains unchanged.
If anyone has had this issue and has managed to fix it, PLEASE share your wisdom. I am out of patience!

  • Lenovo 24 inch touch screen not full screen with 1920x1080 selected (L2461xwA)

I have the L2461xwA Lenovo Widescreen Touchscreen display. When I set the resolution to 1680x1050, it is full screen as expected. When I set the resolution to 1920x1080, which is the native resolution, it is NOT full screen. There is about a 1 inch black border on the left and right sides and about a 3/4 inch border on the top and bottom when in 1920x1080 resolution. How do I make it full screen?
(I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and have installed all of the drivers. The touch functionality and camera are working great)
    Thanks
    Solved!

Nevermind. I resolved it. When I switched DVI ports on my video card, it worked.

  • Premier Elements 11 screen refresh when window not full screen

    Hi,
    Have following spec pc:
Pentium 4 3.6Ghz 2Gb Ram with NVidia GTS450 latest display drivers and windows XP service pack 3.
When running Premier elements in not full screen mode moving the window leaves window trails behind and screen does not refresh. In full screen things are ok?.
What can be causing this and is there anything that can be done to resolve this apart from upgrading my pc etc.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the forum.
I have the same, or very similar GUI display issues with PrE 11 on an older laptop, running XP-Pro SP3 and an nVidia GeForce 8800M GTX w/ 512MB VRAM. Unfortunately, for that chip and on XP-Pro, the latest video driver is from back in 2011 (IIRC), and no new one in sight.
I feel that the only solution will be to update the OS to Win7 (allowing a newer video driver from nVidia), or replacement of the laptop (which I am doing).
PrE 4.0, PrPro CS 2, AE CS 2, and other, older Adobe programs, all work perfectly, but PrE 11 has display issues. To me, this means that the newer version's GUI interfaces more closely with the video driver, than the other programs.
Even for a company, like nVidia, the XP OS route is now a deadend.
Sorry for the bad news, but know that you are not alone.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

I have a 27" Thunderbolet display added onto my 27" iMac. Today, turning it on, the Thunderbolt display is now not full screen - it has been for several months till now.  Any ideas?

Reset the PRAM by holding Command-Option-R-P on startup. If that doesn't work try in safe mode by holding shift on startup.

  • Safari Full Screen Mode not full screen

In full screen mode in Safari 7 I cannot hide the tool bar.  Hide toolbar is greyed out. This used to be possible in the previous version of Safari.  Is there a way round this?
Curiously most of the toolbar can disappear in non full screen mode.
    David

Hmm, i think i phrased original question badly, i am looking for auto-hide to be featured in normal window mode as well as fullscreen, and whatever else designers and programmers can dream up and not execute poorly.
I have now disabled all EXTENSIONS and removed all 3rd party bars (google, sharethis, never used nayway;) and as my suspicions confirmed Safari is running much better. I was very suspicious of this when it was added as it seemed like trying to match Firefox, which I also gave up some time ago in place of Chrome as my second browser, although I use Safari for 90%. The extensions i think causes freezing when i had Parallels running a Windows VM at the same time and also other times when not.
The extensions is a bit stupid in my opinion as any niggling, minor feature of a website should be addresses to the website rather than the browser. Where adverts are concerned, well, just use the web less or more specifically!
I think I'm fine with Toolbar/URL-search and bookmark bar, its great - simple and not intrusive. I believe EXTENSIONS introduction gave me some sort of weird mental outlook and would urge Apple to be more careful in bringing in different types of features unnecessarily.

  • Playback only stutters in preview screen, not full screen.

Brand new iMac 5k, maxed processor and graphics driver, and loaded up with 32gb of ram. Files live on internal 1tb drive. Originally 1080p 30fps MP4 with h.264 codec. Have created proxy, have optimized, have used compressor to switch to prores format. The files play, freezes, then plays again and freezes. Occasionally I get a dropped frame alert when playing on timeline or when previewing original file. Files do not stutter when doing full screen playback! I have turned on and off background rendering also. This is my first foray into FCPX so any help is appreciated. Timeline is set to match the frame rate of clips when I load it in. Beta testing the new Yosemite, could that be it?

Same here. I sent feedback to Apple since this stuttering didn't occur for me before the beta. I suggest you do the same.

  • Apple Composite AV Cable: Full Screen from iPod to TV?

I'm looking at buying the Apple Composite AV Cable for my iPod Classic 120. I didn't want to purchase it before I knew if it would do what I want it to do.
Will it play TV shows, Videos, etc... full screen on my TV when plugged in?
Also, if I were to plug it into a 3rd party (Dynex) iPod dock, and plug the Apple Composite AV Cable into the 30pin port in back of the dock, would it still play on my TV?
And thirdly, with the above scenario in use, if I were to plug the USB end of the AV Cable into my computer, would it still play on my TV?
Any and all help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

Your first question is yes. If you set the ipod to "fit to screen" then it will, as long as when you convert the file, the aspect ratio is set to the ipod screen size(320×240 pixels). If the software has that option.
I'm not sure about the connection for the dock you want to use, but with the 6th gen ipods a lot of 3rd party docks will not allow you to view video's through them because of something written into the ipod software. The one you want to use does not support the Classic. The only one I found was Apples own. But you can not use the menu button on the remote, so you can not change between films (unless in a play list) or change between films, music, photos or any other function of the ipod with out manually doing it yourself. The menu button is only to be used with Apple TV.
No to your third question. Your ipod is connected to the computer and even if you play the file from the pod in itunes, it will only show up on your monitor

  • IPad 2, Digital AV Adapter not full screen

    Hi,
I bought an Apple Digital AV Adapter three days ago.
I use my iPad 2 connect with Sony Bravia 32' television via Digital AV Adapter,
The iPad 2 instantly connect to the television, but the problem is that the screen that display isn't full screen. I tried with every setting on my iPad and also on the television but still no luck and the scree still appear to be 1/4 of the size.
I also tried with other television from my brother's house and give the same result and I tried with my brother's iPad and samething.
I went to the Apple store and change the cable because I read one of the article in this site and said they change and work so I tried but still giving the same result.
This is a bit out of the topic but I tried with my iPhone 4 (with some hack) and iPhone 4 give full resolution which is kinda weird why not with iPad :/
can anybody give any advice what should I do?

there is a bug in this device, and it's all apples fault with iso 7.
Here is what you need to do to fix it this annoying problem. What you need to do is first power on everything and connect your device up. IN settings look for  Settings, General. there will be a little Magic box that shows up only when it's connected and working called video out. select that and look for widescreen, change it to off or no. but the selection you make here does nothing tell you reboot the device. so unplug the video out adapter and reboot the device and once connected up it should show the video in its right aspect ratio now. I played around with this for an hour tell I figured out it needs to be rebooted.
    Enjoy.
and for me for some odd reason windscreen turned off means it's on.

  • Safari always auto-hide bars, always: also in normal screen mode (not full-screen, which is when autohide happens)

Bookmark bar is auto hidden in fullscreen mode, how to keep same functionality in normal mode out of full-screen?
In full-screen I just have the main toolbar showing, which is how I want it all the time. This or either make "full-screen" a lot better.

Hmm, i think i phrased original question badly, i am looking for auto-hide to be featured in normal window mode as well as fullscreen, and whatever else designers and programmers can dream up and not execute poorly.

  • Right hand viewer not full screen

my small viewer (at the right hand panel) suddenly became a widescreen mode rather than a full screen - means there is a gray area at the top of the bottom of the screen.
it does not improve if i change the viewer size at the Windows pull down manual.
No improvement even i reinstall the imovie and remove the preference .plist in the library.
    Appreciate your help.

The iPhone is damaged and there is nothing you can do but take it to an Apple store genius bar for an out-of-warranty replacement, $269 in the US.
Dropping the iPhone voided the warranty.

  • DVD encoded with PQDVD converter is not full screen on iPod

I have just encoded a DVD with PQDVD iPod converter (www.pqdvd.com), it has an aspect ratio of 2:40:1.
I stretched the movie in pqdvd to 320X240.
Once finished when I watch it on my iPod it isnt full screen with black bars on top and bottom. I have tried the widescreen setting on and off on the iPod but nothing changes.
What have I done wrong? any ideas to make it fit to screen?
Also what is the best bitrate to encode at for movies for watching at iPod and TV viewing?
    thanks

i don't use that program, or DVD's much to be honest.
i know this is a stupid question, but the black bars, are they part of the original video? probably not, but i know i've had it on one of mine once..

  • Connecting laptop to monitor/TV and image is not full screen

I tried to connect my hp stream 11-d010ca to my monitor and my laptop via HDMI but could not get the image to appear "full screen". The picture is being duplicated fine but is only being shown in the centre of the screen and the image is not being stretching the entire screen. Basically there's the duplicated image of the laptop in the centre of the screen with large black unused space around the image on my secondary display.
Here's what is being shown on my Intel HD Control Panel. I am only getting the option to "Centre Image" and there is no option to "fit to scale" etc. The preview image in the link posted is similar to what I am experiencing with the unused black space.
