Apple tv is on but nothing is on my tv

I'm completed exhausted with my apple tv.  As of right now my tv is on, apple tv is on, but I have nothing on my tv (sound or video).  This is happening often.  The only fix recently has been to unplug my apple tv and it resets it's self but now that isn't working either.  I have all the basics covered like recent updates, tv on the right channel and all the plugs in the right slots.  What am I missing?  This is very aggravating.  I'm very disappointed in this apple product.

Did you follow the steps exactly? Removing all cables, plug in micro usb and start itunes. If you have a 3rd gen ATV you also need to connect power.
