Apple TV, iTunes and my hard drive free space

Hello,
Not sure if anybody has posted this question already. Here it goes.
¿Is it possible to leave some content just in the AppleTV without syncing it to the iTunes? I have a MacBookPro with 100 Gb hard drive; my Apple TV is 160 GB and my content is around 25 GBytes of Movies and 35 Gbytes of TV Shows plus some 2 Gigs of music. Now the issue is that, everytime i bought some movies/songs in the AppleTV it's being transfered to my iTunes in my MacBook and im running out of space like crazy!
So, is it possible to leave in the AppleTV just the content i bought from the iTunes store without syncing it with my iTunes and my Mac hard drive?
And, is it possible to transfer the (movies/tv shows) purchases i've made in my iTunes to my AppleTV so i can free space?
Regards.

So in essence, if you buy a 160 GB ATV and only have a MACBOOK w/ 80 GB, you can only use less than half the space available on your ATV...that *****! I wonder what the best external storage device is for ease of play of content? I hate adding extra equipment....

  • Deleting Tracks from Itunes and from Hard drive

    Hiya
I used to click delete in Itunes and it would remove the track from both Itunes and my hard drive.
However no it only deletes from Itunes, any way to get it back to how it was?
    Cheers

I was having this problem and managed to find a solution.
I had to change my iTunes folder to the same folder that my music was actually located in.
    In iTunes:
Edit -> Preferences... -> Advanced -> (iTunes Music Folder Location) Change..
    Hope this helps some people.

  • Hard drive free space discrepancy

I have an 11 inch Macbook Air with a 120GB SSD and I am running OS X Lion 10.7.5.
Every so often I get messages indicating my hard drive is nearly full. Since it is a small hard drive I never thought much of it and just deleted a movie or two I put on it for when I travel. But lately I realized that I keep all my music, photos, and bulk of my movie files on an external drive, so there really isn’t much on my computer.
When I add up all the files listed under My Mac HD in the finder, I get 62 GB. Add in the operating system and I come up with 75 GB of the SSD used. When I look at the storage summary on “About this Mac”, it says I am using 94 GB. There is about a 19 GB discrepancy. Does anyone know what could cause this and where 19 GB of data can be hiding?

Use a tool like OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 to find what's on the disk, where, and how large.
Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.

  • Help: itunes and external hard drive

I bought 2 TB Seagate external hard drive just so I can put all my music/movies/tv shows on it so I can free up space on the laptop. I followed these instructions from Apple's website... http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364
What I've read was after the above was done I could hook up the external, hook up my iphone and I would be able to use itunes as I normally would b/c it was getting my music (& stuff) from the external but I could never do it. Last night everything kept giving me the exclamation point and saying it couldn't locate the file. I tried to load the music from the external to itunes so I did that in itunes with add file/folder to itunes and it duplicated a lot of my music BUT I was able to play some of the files. So I started deleting the exclamation point ones and this morning I was going pick up where I left off and it has been nothing but ****. Nothing would play and itunes kept not responding. So I uninstalled itunes (exactly how apple website said too) thinking and praying I might start from scratch b/c at this point I was boiling and I was done. So now after reinstalling itunes it is still not responding and nothing will play.
My hard drive still shows all the files but won't play.
I was simply trying to save space but simple is not what i've got!!!!!!
    Thanks- Megan

Windows is probably changing the drive letter of the exHD after you plug in the ipod. Isn't that nice, it can do that without telling you?
For instance you started ituens and made the library while the exHD was F:
Then you plug in the ipod and the windows changes it so the ipod has F:
Now itunes is lost so you get the !
You need to assign the drive letter to be permanent on the exHD. Use windows disk manager.
You an also assign a permanent drive letter to your ipod.
My advice is to pick letters far down in the alphabet.

  • Windows iTunes and Mac Hard Drive format

I use my iPod in a PC for iTunes. Can I use it as a hard drive for a mac as well? Please advice.
    Thanks!!!
    ~Ferd

As a matter of fact, you can.
When you use your iPod with Windows, it formats the hard drive as FAT32, which the Mac can also read. But, in order to use it with the Mac, you'll need to put it into disk mode. You can do this by resetting the iPod (slide the hold switch on, then off, then hold Menu and Select; the iPod will reset, but continue to hold whiel you see the Apple logo. In a few seconds, you'll see "Do Not Disconnect". Your iPod is now in Disk Mode, and your Mac will recognize it as such.)
Also, when you're done, don't forget to eject the iPod. If you don't you could lose data, and no one likes that.

  • Problem with itunes and external hard drive

  • How can I delete files from iTunes AND my hard drive? It used to be very obvious in iTunes but I no longer see that option.

I used to easily be able to delete songs from my hard drive and library through iTunes but I no longer see that option. Is there a way to do that or a workaround of some kind?

Are these songs in the iTunes media folder shown in iTunes prefs > Advanced?
Only songs in this location will be deleted from the HD when delting from iTunes.
    Also, iTunes prefs > Advanced.
    Click Reset Warnings.
If you are deleting from a playlist, it will only delete from that playlist.
Hold Shift and press Delete to remove from the playlist and from the library.

  • Problem; itunes and external hard drive

I saved my musics to my external hard drive and imported them to my itunes library, and tried to modify their tags, but everything in info section was inactive and couldn't be modified. but once i move the file to internal drive, it works fine no matter where it is stored afterwards. what's the problem here? I've already tried deselecting the read-only attribute.

You would have to change the tags while working inside the external drive. Then when you look at them through iTunes you will see the changes that you made.

  • OS X operation and hard drive free space

I'm trying to track down a sudden spate of system and software lockup.  My current hypothesis is the issue is connected with the size of some new PDF files coupled with decreasing free space on the hard drive.
For Windows to operate correctly, MS clearly states a hard disk partition must have a minimum of 15% free space.  (I think XP and older only requires 10% free space, but I'm not positive about that.)
Is there a similar free space percentage for each partition in OS X?
If yes, is there a simple overview of how it works "out there" somewhere?
    Thanks.

  • ITunes and Three Hard Drives...

Is it possible to do this: One iTunes Library containing music and video content. I want to keep all music files on one hard drive (A) all movie files on another hard drive (B) and all TV shows on another drive (C) and have the iTunes Library file remain on the primary hard drive? Is it possible to use the iTunes application to see all the content of all three drives if all the drives are plugged into the computer thereby freeing up space on my internal hard drive? Many Thanks for your input.

Yes it is possible. However, iTunes does not have any facility for putting certain kinds of content into certain drives, so as you add new material you will manually have to put it in the right place.
Also, to keep your stuff where you put it and only where you put it, go to Preferences and turn off the options for "Keep..." and "Copy..."

  • Internal Hard Drive Free Space Issue

    Hey,
I recently upgraded my 17" MacBook Pro from Tiger to Snow Leopard but the upgrade seems to have created a number of problems, the most notable being the lack of free space now available on my internal hard drive.
I also had to install a trial version of Aperture 3.0.3 in order to access my aperture library as the older version of Aperture is not compatible with Snow Leopard.
At this point the free space available on my internal hard drive was 36GB and my aperture library was 39GB. I had to uninstall Photoshop Elements 9 in order to create enough free space to open this library.
I bought an external hard drive and after some organising (importing and exporting to and from external hard drive), I eventually moved all photo files/folders, projects and libraries onto this external drive, leaving only one in-progress project (about 3GB) left on the internal volume.
I also exported my iTunes library and any other files to this external drive.
    All trashes have been emptied.
The problem is that, despite all this clear-out, I now only have 2GB of free space on the internal hard drive.
I ran Disk Inventory X and it shows that my home folder is using 155GB of space, which seems ridiculous considering there is in effect nothing left on my laptop save for the application programs and the one remaining project.
I have manually checked through this folder and all its subfolders and have found nothing that would accumulate to this amount of space.
I have repaired an issue with the internal volume, but it is now showing a “minor” problem with the volume header.
If someone can provide and explanation/solution to this I would be very grateful as it is severely slowing my workflow at the moment.
    Thanks

    Baresi:
I suggest that you begin with Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
I recommend that you make sure that you make a bootable clone of your entire volume using a utility like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
You should also seriously consider installing a larger capacity drive.

  • I need to upgrade itunes and have 120 gb free space, however, when I go to install it says I'm out of space. The files are only 42 mb. What am I missing?

When I go to upgrade my itunes software I get a message that I do not have enough space.  My hard drive has 120 gb free and the files are only 42 mb. What am I missing?

You Hard Drive might be framented or have bad sectors.  Use Windows utility to deframent the drive and Scan Disk for file allocation errors or bad sectors.

  • Significant Decease In Hard Drive Free Space

I bought my first mac last week, mac book pro 13" with 320g hard drive. I have only installed three programs, ibank 4, iwork, and sophos anti virus. Along with 2g of pictures. I noticed tonight that the free space on my hard drive has decreased to 99g. Is it normal for mac's to use over 200g for its operating system and programs that came installed on the computer? I was really taken back by how quickly I have eaten through space on my hard drive without storing music or videos.

Ok, I feel pretty dumb. I did not know that I imported 107g of my itunes videos. The importation of those videos explains the loss of hard drive space. I'm sorry if I wasted anyones time.

  • Help, losing hard drive free space after removing A3

This one has me scratching my head.
I've been through all the insanity of trying to get A3 up and running and have decided to give up until Apple gets their act together.
So I restored my startup drive from a SuperDuper back-up (pre A3) that does have A2 on it. All my A2 libraries, vaults and original RAWS reside on separate drives. Normally this leaves me with 390 +/_ GB of free space on my startup drive. However over the past 2 days since restoring to my pre A3 state I've noticed background drive activity (Activity Monitor shows kernel_task/root making consistent writes to the drive) and my free space has been gradually declining to where it is now shown at 328 GB.
I did a fresh install of OS10.6.2 and have run directory rebuilds, repaired permissions and Spotlight turned off.
It's almost as if A3 were still trying to do it's drive eating thing (technical term).
Can anyone enlighten me about what may be happening?
    Thanks!
    Bob

This happened to me as well.
TechTool actually crashed a hard drive big time by filling it to the brim with daily backup files.
It is supposed to keep only the 5 most current and delete them oldest first.
I disabled the backup function (TechTool Protection) which is found in the OS X System Prefs.

  • Hard Drive free space automatically reducing

This problem started about mid-day yesterday after 4+ hours of computer use. I was running multiple programs (typically MS Word, Thunderbird, Photoshop, Acrobat Pro, iPhoto, Safari… I also had Parallels 6 running with Windows XP and AutoCAD LT 2008), when I was informed that I was running low on hard drive space. (At that point Parallels/Windows XP required a force quit as they would not shut down normally).
My hard drive had gone from 35 GB free space to under 1GB (I had noticed that the hard drive was chattering away prior to this occurring). After a restart, I watched as the same thing happened without any software running… the hard drive would keep chattering away and my available hard drive space would slowly reduce from 35 GB to less than 1 GB. It is like watching a slow clock countdown… the reductions are in approximately 0.03 GB increments until the listing gets below 1 GB.
After it reached a point where the same low disk space was posted again, I waited awhile and everything eventually "reset" with my free hard drive space back to the original number. The reduction in available space then started all over again.
I verified the disk and repaired disk permissions, and then downloaded iAntiVirus to run a scan for malware. Everything reported fine.
As of today, the same thing is still occurring. The available space steadily decreases over time, and once I have less than 8 GB or so available things really begin to slow down between software (and I have to make sure I shutdown Windows XP/Parallels to avoid having it lock up).
What should I be looking for? My of my software updates are downloaded and installed.
    Thanks

Less than 10GB can result in total loss of everything when the directory can't be written. Less than 10% is dangerous as well. For performance, 40% free space on boot drive.
Move files off your system drive!
If you can, put media files on one of the other three drives.
Never use the boot drive for VMs or for CS scratch.
Keep the boot drive to minimum, just the OS and applications as much as possible.
I'd go with 300-600GB WD 10K VelociRaptor for system, another for scratch, 2 x 1.5TB WD Black for media files and VM.
Use console to watch system.log and see where space is being used if you are unsure with OmniDiskSweeper, see if there are hidden files and folders. I assume you aren't running any torrent software. Take a look under "/Volumes" and make sure there isn't any data there (normally hidden .Volumes should have only alias mount points).
And, much more important as well, clone your system with SuperDuper; run Alsoft Disk Warrior to repair and rebuild the directory on the new cloned system drive. Maybe after you remove and off load as much as possible first. And no, don't rely on just Apple Disk Utility, but sounds like the drive directory is in trouble. Also, your free space is too small, too fragmented, and why your VM crashed.
