Apple TV: Movie Lag, Stutter, Misses Frames

I have been backing up some of my home movies that are on dvd so that I can sync them with my new Apple TV using handbrake. I have tried alot of the different settings (apple tv preset, default, etc) but every movie that I watch plays for a bit then either stutters, misses a frame or 6 or moves slowly through a frame sequence. I do not know what to do. Has anyone else had this problem? If so how did you fix it. I read that the apple tv only supports 24fps and that is what I have tried encoding at and no luck. I have tried these same movies on a friends apple tv without a problem. I have tried harddrive syc and wireless play with the same results.

I was assuming it was NTSC rate which is 29.97 fps or thereabouts, but if changed to 29fps might definitely look odd.
The more I think about it, if the videos look great on a friend's AppleTV and presumably different TV, then presumably either the OP's AppleTV is struggling due to an impending hardware fault or perhaps less efficient hard drive, or the friend's TV has fantastic video processing circuitry rendering far smoother frame to frame transitions. The same hardware device will not necessarily produce the same video playback experience on different TV's some having vastly superior processing circuitry.
In fact the OP should consider if he has any playback enhancement features switched on on his TV as such features can occasionally give more problems when siwtched on than without them. I was reading the tech details of newest Panasonic plasmas, and one of the frame intrepolation methods seemed bizarre to say the least in that it almost never reproduced the original frames, giving interpolated versions of the majority.

  • Apple TV 3 video stutter/dropped frames playing on buffer

I'm having an issue with three different AppleTV 3 devices not being able to play back videos via Homesharing on iTunes without dropping frames every few seconds. This is happening with a full (or mostly full) buffer. This has nothing to do with "true-motion" or high-scan-rate TV settings, as I hate those and disable them immediately on every TV I purchase.
I have tried recompressing the videos at considerably lower bitrates, and this does not solve the problem. File sizes are approximately 4GB/hour, and it happens with both 720p and 1080p content. Files are all .m4v, from various content sources. I may be wrong, but it seems that this problem has gotten worse lately, possibly with updates to the devices, but I can't prove that. I know that I was able to watch videos before with no issues, and now just about everything I throw at it will stutter. It also seems as though the dropped frames get worse, the longer I let the video play.
I can't imagine this a network issue, as it happens when the buffer bar is showing plenty of content. I'm using wired gigabit ethernet, but I have also confirmed that it will do the exact same thing if I am using wifi. I have not noticed this to be an issue while watching streamed content, like HBOGo, or Netflix.
I know this seems to be a common issue with these devices, having looked elsewhere on these forums. I'm hoping that Apple will fix the issue, or at least tell us what we can do to mitigate it.

This is a known issue I'm afraid.   See the following thread for more info:-

  • Duplicate/missing frames in IMovie '11 ver. 9.0.4

    Hi,
When I import Canon 7D HD .MOV files (H.264 MP4, 1920x1280, 29.97 fps) into IMovie '11, I noticed that some frames are duplicated (probably to make up for missing frames), which results in motion "judder" when playing the clip in the main project window. This is especially noticeable when panning a shot, and appears to happen at every 3.5 sec of video.
It does not matter if video optimization (large or original) is turned on or off, when importing the clip. (I usually use original) Audio track remains unaffected.
Inevitably, this judder/stuttering is passed on to any form of video export, be it MP4 ,DV, MOV, etc., which ruins final product.
What's really strange is that the optimized clip that's created by IMovie and stored in the events folder, plays smoothly in Quicktime, no missing or duplicated frames. So it is something in IMovie's UI that's creating this problem. This should not happen at all - what is shown in IMovie's playback window should match the original or optimized video, frame for frame.
Is there anything I am missing as far as settings, or is something not right on my system? And yes, I did send Apple a bug report.
I am doing this work on a late 2007 17" 2.67 GHZ Intel Core Duo Macbook Pro, 4GB ram, Mac OS X 10.6.8  (slow, but steady)
    Thanks for your input.

Hi! I ran into same problem!
    I have iMovie version 11 9.0.4 (1634). Running on OSX Lion, 13" Macbook Pro Mid 2010 C2D 2.4GHz.
I used Samsung Galaxy S II to capture a small video of GT5 replay from LCD tv in 1080p (PAL, 25Hz) mpeg4 format. No matter what export settings I use the exported video file from iMovie has a several duplicate frames. I took the video file into Avidemux and stepped it through from frame to frame. Duplicate frames are:
    26,27
    42,43
    104,105
    120,121
    137,138
    153,154
and so on.... that is the reason for judder/jerky movement. Other programs like Blender (or Openshot movie editor on Linux) produced a nice and smooth video.
So I looked more into this problem and I noticed that when importing a video file into iMovie, DO NOT use the "optimize video" option. If I import my short movie into iMovie without doing the optimizing part, editing seems to be a bit slower but the exported video file plays smoothly. I couldn't find any duplicate frames. After using the "optimize full original size" option and then re-exporting the movie it was full of duplicate frames again...
I'm not sure what the optimizing does (using a faster intermediate codec/format?) but for this simple test it certainly ruins exported movies...
Not sure if this is any help to you, but you might want to try it...

  • Airplay files from device lag/stutter

    Hello apple friends.
I got a apple tv. i use this brilliant app called air video HD wich works fine for streaming movies from PC to the apple tv. no lag and no stutter.
Also, mirroring games like modern combat 4 work without stutter. there is a delay in controls wich makes it unplayable, but no stutter.
...but here comes the problem. while air video HD can stream movies just fine(probaly by converting on-the-fly) it cannot play exactly desame file from my iphone 5s or ipad air to the third-gen apple tv. Well it actually can (tried VLC from app store) but there is alot stutter.
Its weird how everything else that i stream is without problems or stutter....but playing files locally(1080p, i want no less) results in annoying stutter.
How can i fix this? Is there a better player to use? Is on-the-fly converting and streaming consuming less data so i need faster connection?
i would like to add that the apple tv is wireless set up. no cable to router. only will do this cable to router if you really think this will solve the issue.
    any additional info required?
    Thanks!

You are using the most complicated and failure prone options.  Streaming video over WifI rarely works well.  In your case you are trying to do it twice concurrently.  One WiFi connection to the device with streaming video and then a second wireless connection to AppleTV.  On top of which AirPlay is horribly bug ridden and un-reliable.
Just select the content you want to watch from the ATV menus.  It works very well and with none of the issues you get with AirPlay.
And to your last question yes you will have fewer issues if you use a wired connection for ATV.

  • Under Snow Leopard, Quicktime 10 (and 7) stutter on frame-by-frame playback

After I upgraded to Snow Leopard I found that Quicktime 10 stuttered very badly in frame-by-frame playback of .mp4 or .mov files. I use this feature very frequently to study dance videos. I pause the video with the space bar, then move forward or backward frame-by-frame using the cursor keys.
After the upgrade I went back to my Leopard back-up disk and grabbed Quicktime 7 and installed it on my laptop. Quicktime 7 has much less stutter in the playback, but it is still not as good as it was under 10.5.
This is on a January 2009 Macbook Pro with a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 4 GB of RAM.
I tried changing the settings in Energy Saver to Higher Performance but that did not make any difference.
A friend of mine just bought one of the new 27-inch iMacs and I checked this issue on his computer - frame-by-frame playback is smooth.
    Any suggestions or comments appreciated.
    thanks
    Paul

I had this problem on my old mac mini and then my new mini worked fine. I upgraded to snow leopard and this QT 10 choppy video is BACK! Get this fixed apple! Funny but, if you right click and "open with" the application grapher, it will play the choppy video smoothly/completely normal.
why can't this be resolved??? WHY WHY WHY!!!!!

  • I bought a new airport extreme and on the first day, it worked well but the apple tv is lagging behind

When I got this and hooked it up. it was so easy to connect it to the puter and all but apple tv is lagging behind, so slow and had to wait to catch up to be able to watch movie(s) What can I do about it? ( the previous airport extreme had no problem with the apple tv, never lags behind.
    H.E.L.P.

    Dear LaPastenague,
many thanks for your ultra response...I have revisited my earlier  thoughtsi / question...I possibly may have not mentioned, the whole intention was to add another device which is in my kitchen and cabling to it could prove time consuming....
Just came back from Maplins with a NetGear universal wireless adaptor for my Win XP machine which will be located in the kitchen.
I was balancing future swap arounds with the AE if my TC [ 2nd Gen] decides to pack up on me.
    Good evening

  • Missing frames in iMovie

I am trying to convert my old 8mm Camcorder tapes to iMovie HD. I have bought a Pyro A/V Link (analog to DV converter) and am connecting it to my iMac via a Firewire cable. However, after a few minutes of playing a tape into the converter and iMovie I get missing frames as if the computer can't keep up with the frames per sec coming from the Camcorder and converter. Does anyone have any clues on how to overcome this problem? I have all other applications turned off and it doesn't matter where I save the movie on the hard disc, the problem persists. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

    Hi Gazza51,
    Welcome to the forum!
I would advise to return the Pyro A/V link to the store where you bought it and have it replaced with Canopus ADVC 110. I own and have used one a lot with iMovie until I upgraded my equipment. Also, you will find many posts on this forum recommending exactly this piece of hardware. Firthermore, the iMovie forum could be a better place for you to search information about iMovie (it is already there I am sure and you do not even have to ask) than this forum which is more about Pro applications such as Final Cut.

  • Compressor - Output Clips Missing Frames Throughout

Compressing clips from Canon 7D (H.264) to Avid1:1x codec creates clips that are missing some frames. This results in a shorter output clip.
    The missing frames are random.
The clips have a steppy playback that can be seen when stepping through the clip one frame at a time.
I am not re-timing the clips. The source is 25fps, and so is the output.
    Thanks,
    Ben.

    G'day
Benjamin, Benjamin, Benjamin, a world of hurt today, mate.
I'm not sure this is the best workflow for you. Have you tried anything like clipwrap or Mpegstream clip to get the clips into a usable Avid format? I'm wondering if you have the correct codecs installed in the first place.
what you can do is work in smaller batches and keep sending them off in the queue.
If you have an 8 core machine you'll want to setup an render cluster, using 4 instances. Look through the manual for that in Qmaster. then when you submit, send the render batch to the cluster rather than "this machine."
I haven't been on an Avid in an age and a half, but I'd think they'd have a workflow setup for these clips, I mean rather then running off to Apple's solution.

  • Animations in Safari missing frames?

So when I'm on any website some .GIFs will either be missing frames or parts of the frame will be kinda deleted? Like in this image:
But I know it's something with the computer since I can even drag it out & open it in preview & the frames are all messed up. But if I drag it into phtoshop they're perfectly fine?
This has been happening since I first got the computer about 3 years ago, so is there anything I can do to fix it?

And if there isn't an oval, quit Safari (Safari menu > Quit) delete the following file and then restart Safari:
    Hard drive > Users > Your Username > Library > Preferences > com.apple.Safari.plist

  • Magic mouse jumpy/lag/stutter/glitchy (macbook pro)

I just recently brought a Magic Mouse from the mac store, and I'm about to take it back. I've seen lots written about similar problems, jumpy/lag/stutter/glitchy mouse, but none recently that I could find. And none that have fixed my mouse.
    The Problem:
My mouse is often jumpy, unresponsive and unusable. It jumps across the screen, either laggy or in a stuttering motion. I will then use the trackpad since I cant use the mouse and the trackpad works perfectly. So i know it's not a process running, or the laptop running slow.
It will sometimes work if it's just been sitting there a long time, like if I come back in the mornings it may work well for about 10-15 minutes, but then stop.
What I've tried: (With no luck)
    - Multiple services, the desk, books, mouse pad etc.
    - Changing batteries
    - I even tried a trick of putting paper between the batteries because apparently the connections are bad and can cause the mouse to disconnect.
    - I upgraded to the mac beta testing OSX, someone had tried that and it worked for them, it did not for me.
    - One guy slams the mouse on the table and it fixes it... I didn't want to try that.
    - I have compressed air, cleaning out the sensor etc.
    - Having the bluetooth forget the device then reconnecting it
    - I've also connected other bluetooth devices and had no issues in the past
    - Resetting the pram and smc
    - Prayed to Lord Jobs offering a sacrifice
    My Macbook Pro:
    Yosemite 10.10.3
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011)
    2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB
I like the look and feel of the mouse, and when it works it's great, so I hope i'm not forced to get some ugly logitec mouse or something...

Well, they have to, really.   How else would they justify the cost of the 'free' replacement.   Thing is, if you live near an Apple store you really must use their facilities.   That is why you pay their prices for a quality item.
Don't think of yourself as being a nuisance, there is a certain entitlement in buying Apple ... and you are entitled.

  • Apple tv movie will not play, though I have 1gig internet!

So today I experienced my first ever real issue with apple TV movie rentals. I downloaded the James Brown movie, Get On Up, and it would NOT start! It just keept telling me that it's ready to play in anything from between 11-27 hours! It's totally messed up because I have the fastest internet in the country, a 2012 apple tv with updated software, an apple airport extreme(ac version) and I'm running 5ghz wifi. I even have the apple tv box about 1 foot from my router! There is NO ISSUES with my gear!!! Everything else is working perfectly. I can even stream ALL my purchased HD movies through my apple tv with no lag at all.
Only when I try to watch a trailer or a movie, it will not play! I've been on support chat with apple 3 times to no avail, so APPLE..... WHF is up???

also could be your HDMI cable......
from another thread.....so exactly what does your Apple TV say to you exactly, when it won't play the movies???
"If this is for the new ATV2, then the cable you use to connect to your TV must be HDCP capable. Some are. Some aren't. I bought a cheap one that was not and it didn't work. I bought a slightly more expensive one that was HDCP compliant and all is fine now.
    From the ATV webpage:
Compatible with high-definition TVs with HDMI and capable of 720p 60/50Hz (see note 2)
    Bottom of page.
Note 2: Requires HDCP when playing protected content.

  • Apple TV regularly seems to skip frames

My apple Tv seems to regularly drop frames - the regular frames rate seems to halve when watching content such as tv shows, movies and trailers all downloaded through iTunes - anyone else seeing this?

    Cheesenightmare wrote:
Thanks for that reply. I suspect its compression related too, but seeing as the issue doesn't appear on other devices playing the same videos iI am figuring it must be DEcompression related, ie at the Apple TV end.
The problem I mentioned is decompression related specifically on AppleTV.
Most computers these days will be far more powerful than AppleTV so should have no issues decompressing - the issue however was not present on AppleTv until a recent update from what I read.
I must say that even to my overly picky eyes I was very impressed with the HD content I havebought from iTunes so far. I was bracing for far worse (Its no Blu Ray of course, but still better than I was hoping for).
    Good to hear.
Even some SD content is extremely well encoded, other stuff is poor - I think the issue is largely one of the SD stuff in the main being targetted to iPod/iPhone use so AppleTV TV SD suffers as the files must be playable by the lowest powered devices.
I wonder if the Apple TV has a sort of "dynamic playback' thing it does, where it drops back to half frame rate if for some reason the processor is not cutting it...or busy doing something else like syncing content.
It may do, but in reality it shouldn't need to.
If it has to do things like this the design is flawed as it should be powerful/stable enough to decode within spec video, especially that from iTunes Store.
A media player device if nothing else has to playback smoothly provided other factors like network issues aren't tripping it up.

Any clue, how i can add a mail account to apple mail app, but with separate password / pin to open it.
Years ago there was a program called mail switcher which added this functionality, but thats gone.
    cheers
    Tom

They would have to be logged in as separate users in order not to see your account in Mail. Whatever accounts put in Mail under your account will show up. All mail accounts usually have there own user and password. The only thing you can do is to remove the password from Keychain and take the account offline so you don't keep getting prompts for passwords each time it checks for mail.
    Not a great solution.
Best way is to give the other user their own user account with their own mail and enable fast user swithcing to log between the different users if all access the computer frequently.
