Apple TV 'N' replace 2x Airport 'Gs'?

I have a blackspot in my house which happen to be in the room where my iMac is (no, I can't move the iMac). To cover this I have to boost/relay my Airport Express with an old Airport Extreme. Not a major problem.
If I was to get into the Apple TV thang, will the 'new and improved' N signal mean that I can ditch the relay base station? Where I currently have my iMac is about 6 foot from where the blackspot starts. It would be a shame (I think) if I set up a new N network for video streaming (not that there's any content in the UK) but the whole thing was slowed down by it having to effectively be relayed by a G signal. My G5 is clearly not N but the Apple TV purchase would be part of an AV/IT upgrade.
Also, would my work Fister PC be able to to jump onto the N network OK?

Almost no PC's (I don't know of any) support 802.11n yet. Of course, you could get a 3rd party card (again, I know of none, yet) to add such support.
I don't think we can answer your question about 802.11n range without knowing a lot more... for instance, is the 802.11g signal just too weak for your iMac to use, or can it flat out not see it? I ask this because 802.11n range is better, so if you need just a slight range boost, it'd do it... but if you're way outside of range, it probably won't.

  • I BEG of you:  How do I replace an Airport Extreme base station with a 4th-generation Time Capsule as the base station?

I'll be damned if I can figure this out.  I have a new late-2012 iMac (OS 10.8.3) connecting to my LAN via Airport wi-fi.  (It will be Ethernet-connected, as soon as a hole is drilled into my new work table, but right now the Ethernet cable doesn't reach.)  My wife uses a 2011 MacBook Air.
The LAN consists of a flying-saucer-looking Airport Extreme connected by Ethernet to the modem, plus 2 old Airport Expresses.  I have an Ethernet switch too, through which I've got a TV connected and a printer connected.
I bought a 4th-generation Time Capsule about a year ago, but couldn't figure out for the life of me how to replace the Airport Extreme with it.  I became so incredibly frustrated that I hid it away in a closet until now.  I  just tried again, with the same results.  I've got both Airport Utility 5.6 (to use with the old Extreme and Expresses) and Airport Utility 6.2.  I was using version 6.2 to set up the Time Capsule... or to try to.  Once again, I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do it!  I tried so many different Ethernet wiring connections that I now cannot remember them well enough to describe them here.
I distinctly remember that, when I tried this a year ago with my wife's MacBook Air and Airport Utility 6.2, I was presented at one point with the question whether I wanted to replace an existing base station with the Time Capsule I was trying to set up, but this time I never was presented with that option.
Is there anyone who can, in essence, hold my hand and walk me through this process step-by-step?  At this point I even need to be instructed what to wire to what.  I feel like a total incompetent.
My MOST sincere thanks in advance for help!
(I hope Time Capsule is the correct forum for this question.  I considered the Airport forum as well, but I don't want to cross-post.)
(And, just to complicate matters, after I get this done-- assuming I ever do-- I want to use the old Airport Extreme on the outside of the house to extend the range of my LAN to the back yard... but that's for another day entirely.)

The Utility transferred all of the AE's settings, so I still have to change the password, which leaves me with only 2 other questions, I think:
    1)  I assume it's just a matter of using the Utility, entering a stronger password and checking for it to be remembered in Keychain Access.  But do I have to  change the password for each individual unit-- the TC, the Extreme and both Expresses-- or will changing it just for the TC alone work for the entire network?
Resetting the password you will need to do for each device... the utility cannot even see those old units.
So you will have to do it for each one.. think it through.. because as you change passwords the others will lose connection.. so start from the express which are wireless extending .. change those first.. and go back up the chain.. as each one changes it will drop off the network.. until you reach extreme and change that. Then you might need to reboot the whole network to get everything talking again. If something goes wrong.. just pluck that one out of the mix and plug in ethernet.. reset and redo the setup. That is my preferred method anyway.. do everything in isolation one by one. By ethernet and then nothing goes wrong.
    2)  Who's the treasonous SOB who spilled the beans to you about the ICBM in my back yard?!?
    N.Korean hackers.
[Edit] Whoops-- one more question:  I want to partition the TC's disk, but Disk Utility doesn't see it.  What do I need to do?
You cannot partition a network disk. And apple provided no tools for it in the TC itself. You can pull the disk out and partition it but that voids your warranty. (although done with care who is to know).
    Look at Q3 here.

Mixing TM and data on the TC is worth planning carefully. They don't necessarily sit happily together.

  • Regarding an Apple TV and an existing Airport Express/AirTunes setup

alright, i think i'm going to make the jump now for the new Apple TV. but i do have a few questions, particularly re: my existing Airport Express/AirTunes and wiring since i'm really maxed out in terms of open ports that i have left.
—my HDMI will have to go through a new HDMI smart switch hub into my older plasma that has one HDMI input. no problem, i've researched the smart switch, and realize the Apple TV may go in the low priority input since it seems to throw a continous current. if anyone LOVES their smart switch, throw me a bone here.
--however, i will need to go audio optical out into my receiver based on my current setup. and my receiver's optical inputs are all currently used. however, one is in use by a nearby Airport Express. since that AE has been used for AirTunes for years, i assume i can now safely ditch it's optical out since i will now be running my music through the Apple TV instead, correct? and therefore i will have my receiver's optical input now freed up, and there goes my Apple TV wire instead. just looking for verification here.
--since this AE is right there, will I get any speed advantage to the Apple TV by dropping an Ethernet cable from the AE's output into the Apple TV's Ethernet input, rather than relying on a pure wireless signal? my assumption is no, since they are both receiving the signal from my Airport Extreme on the other side of the house, but i thought it was still a worthwhile question.
--this particular AE has also been acting as a WiFi range extender (it's b,g,n). so i guess i will still just leave it plugged into the wall, but turn off it's AirTunes sharing, correct?
--(side note: if i wind up not needing the AE's optical out, and i don't need it's Ethernet out, i will then be moving it across the room since i'm ridiculously tapped out of electrical outlets by my entertainment center. and that's where the Apple TV power cord will go. just a boring fyi)
--i truly think i had another important question, but i cannot remember it. so i'll repost when it comes to me.
so i think i know my answers, but i always learn in these forums. so any thoughts or feedback is greatly appreciated.
    thank you!

Older AppleTV did not play well with some switches, so it'd be sensible to get advice about one that definitely works with the new unit. They may have ironed out HDMI glitches but too early to tell.

Yes, the AppleTV will replace the Airport for optical audio duties from your iTunes library. Add an iPhone/iPas Remote app and it should work very nicely as it did with the 1st gen.

I doubt it would be of any benefit as AppleTV has wireless n anyway.
--this particular AE has also been acting as a WiFi range extender (it's b,g,n). so i guess i will still just leave it plugged into the wall, but turn off it's AirTunes sharing, correct?
In that case if it's an extender you may need it on for AppleTV to pick up the wireless, though I think I'd try and see if it receives the main signal adequately first.
--i truly think i had another important question, but i cannot remember it. so i'll repost when it comes to me.
    I know that feeling.

  • Replacing an Airport Extreme with Time Capsule

I have had my wireless network setup and working for a few years.
I've decided to replace my Airport Extreme with a Time Capsule.
Can I simply disconnect the Airport Extreme, connect the Time Capsule and configure it with the same SSID & Password? or is there a procedure for accomplishing this that I'm not aware of?

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
What you describe should work, but first you might want to try this approach: Use AirPort Utility to put the Extreme into "manual setup" mode. Use the menu option File -> Export Configuration File to write the configuration to a file. Replace the Extreme with the Time Capsule, put it into "manual setup" mode, and use the menu option File -> Import Configuration File to read the Extreme configuration into the Time Capsule.
Full disclosure: I haven't tried this. If it works, you'll have saved yourself several minutes of configuring. If it doesn't work, then proceed as you originally planned. And let the rest of us know how things went.

  • Replacing older airport extreme with time capsule

I am thinking of replacing my airport extreme with time capsule. I had a lot of problems setting up airport extreme a few years ago - now it is very reliable. I don't want to have the same issues with time capsule. Can I simply physically replace the airport extreme with time capsule using the same settings as previously
    Advice gratefully anticipated

Welcome to the discussion area, pancuronium!
You will use AirPort Utility on your Mac for this operation:
(Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility)
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the File menu at the upper left corner of the screen near the Apple icon
    Click Export Configuration File
Assign a name to the file and save it to a convenient location like the desktop
When you are ready to install the Time Capsule....
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
    Click the File Menu
    Select Import Configuration File
Navigate to locate the file that you exported to import all the settings into a new configuration for the Time Capsule

  • I just replaced my airport extreme and now the amber light on my airport express is flashing and so it is not being recognized.  I have been on the computer and gone to airport utility and it is simply not showing up at all.  What can I do?

I just replaced my airport extreme and now the amber light on my airport express is blinking.  When I go to utilities and try to find the airport express it does not show up.
    What should I do?

Anytime you change networking hardware it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of that hardware. Check out the following AirPort User Tip for details. Please post back your results.

  • Apple's Adapter Replacement Program

    Hello,
Im having trouble with my charger works sometimes and sometimes does not. I saw this article about Apple's Adapter Replacement Program (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4127).
I have an L type charger and bought my MBP in 2010. Am I eligible for this replacement?
    Thanks

    It's pretty clear here:
    Resolution
Whether your product is in or out of warranty, you can take your adapter to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Retail Store for evaluation and replacement if necessary. Pending the results of evaluation, you may or may not be eligible for a replacement adapter free of charge. Signs of accidental damage would negate any coverage. Be sure to bring in the computer used with the adapter; it is required to process potential adapter replacements.

A family member has given me her iPhone. How do I delete her Apple ID and replace it with my own ?

Any Apps that have been downloaded with her Apple ID will remain Tied to that ID...
You should consider doing a Restore as New and start over with your ID...
Connect the Device to the iTunes library on your Computer, click on the Device tab that appears in iTunes and click Restore.

    The Basic Troubleshooting Steps are:
Restart... Reset... Restore from Backup...  Restore as New...

  • Can I send Apple TV 2 audio to Airport Express

I can't seem to find an answer for this respect to the ATV2.  Everything I read talks about using Airplay to stream from iTunes on a computer to either the Apple TV or to an Airport Express.  However, what I'd like to do is have the audio from my Apple TV (whether it's Netflix, Internet Radio, rented movies, etc.) sent from the Apple TV to my home stereo.  I have no way to get a wire all the way from the TV to the stereo so I was hoping to get an Airport Express and plug it into my stereo and then hopefully the audio from the Apple TV could play through it.  I just can't confirm that it will work.  The chat guy at the Apple Store said yes but I have no confidence in that answer because he couldn't give any details on how it would be set up.
Does anyone have an answer?  If it won't work with the Airport Express, does anyone have a solution that I could implement to get the job done?  I'd like the have better audio when watching movies or playing slideshows with music.
    Thanks.

Sorry, but unlike an iTunes host, the Apple TV is not a Media Server and, as far as I know, you would not be able to stream from it ... at least not yet. Interestingly, with the Apple TV 2 using iOS as its operating system (the older version used a slimmed-down version of OS X), there may be an app developer out there that will come up with the means to do so in the not too distant future.

  • Apple TV, Time Capsule (or Airport Extreme) and streaming movies without running iTunes?

I'm thinking of buying an Apple TV but as far as I know I'll need my computer on to run movies from my iTunes account, which is something I really don't want to do every time I want to watch a movie, just wondering if this can first of all be confirmed?
Also, If I buy Apple TV and an apple time capsule (or an Airport extreme connected to a HDD), can I stream movie files located on the time capsule (or HDD) to the AppleTV without having to turn on the computer and run iTunes?

Yes you need your computer on if you want to stream from its library, even if the library is on an external or network drive.
However any purchases you have made from iTunes can be stream from the iTunes Store at any time without your computer being on.

  • Replacing an Airport Express with a Time Capsule but it won't connect to the internet.

Hello, I hope somebody can help.
I am trying to replace an Airport Express with a 2TB Time Capsule but it won't connect to the internet, via an ADSL modem.
I have tried everything I can think of, powering down all devices, re-setting all devices, but nothing seems to solve the problem.
When I first tried to set up the Time Capsule, there was an option to replace the Airport Express using the same settings.
But there were repeated error messages of 'No DNS Servers' and 'PPPoE server couldn't be found'.
I also had messages that the password for PPPoE wasn't correct, but when I plug the Airport Express back in again, everything works fine.
    What could the problem be?

99% of issues with authentication are wrong password or wrong username.. eg it can be strange like the user name is missing the domain.. whereas the Airport Express works fine without it.
Ring your ISP and make doubly sure you have exactly the correct username and password.
If it still doesn't work, put the adsl modem back into router mode and try it again directly on the modem.. if it works ok on the modem but fails on the TC that is possible and can be caused by pppoe client using incorrect authentication type, CHAP or PAP which the TC does not allow you to select AFAIK.. some ISP do not give enough time to get the router to switch on auto to the correct authentication method.
In the end run the modem as router and bridge the TC. It will work just as well for most installations in bridge as the modem in bridge.

i backed up my broken ipad to my computer yesterday, returned it to Apple & got it replaced today and have now accidently backup'd on my computer over the top of my original Ipad Back up from yesterday.  Can anyone advise how do I get previous copy of my back up??

Look at this knowledge base article on iOS backups to iTunes, note where the backups are kept for your type of computer, Windows or Mac, go to that Library location and see if there are any other files with the same name as the current backup but with a different extension and date/time stamp.  If so you can edit the extension of the current backup and then change the extension of the previous backup so it looks like what was on the current and the do a restore.  iTunes will think the older backup is now new and use it to restore.
If there are no such files then you over-wrote the backup and it is gone.
