Apple TV Needs More Internet Content

I love my Apple TV, but the limited amount of Internet content is driving me crazy.  I thought HULU would help but the offerings there are not that much different than NETFLIX and who needs to pay for commercials?  I'm getting ready to buy a second Internet device (ROKU?) to reach what's available to the rest of the world (Amazon, PBS, current network and cable providers). What is everyone else using to access Internet content?

AppleTV, iPad, Mac Book Pro, iPhone.

  • Does Apple TV need Internet bandwidth even if the content is available on LAN?

    Hi,
I was wondering whether Apple TV needs Internet connection just to verify user credentials or it actually uses bandwidth to stream media even if the videos are available locally on a storage device.
I am using an Apple TV 2nd Generation connected to a HD TV. I use Air Video Server to stream videos from a laptop connected to the same LAN.
Even though both devices are connected to a LAN I see usage of Internet bandwidth on my Telstra account.
can someone explain to me why ATV needs Internet to stream local videos?
    Regards,
    Kiran

I noticed the same problem with my ATV2. I have a laptop connected to a router at my cottage and it is not connected to the internet. As soon as i upgraded to 6.0 it took forever to stream movie that were in itunes. I tried both wirelessly and wired. I even bought a different brand of router and that made no difference. It worked fine before the update. When I brought the router home and connected it to the internet, it was instanteneous, but when disconnected it slowed to being unusable. I think that something changed in V 6.0 and it hasn't been corrected yet becuase I just updated to the latest version and it made no difference.

  • Do I need an internet connection for Apple TV?

Hey I want to buy an Apple TV but before I do, I need to know does it require an internet connection to work? Or can it work without one?
The advertisement or information Apple gives me seems like it doesn't need an internet connection, I'm under the impression that if I buy one all I need is to connect it to my television then connect wirelessly from my iPad to the Apple TV device. Then I can begin streaming content to my TV via the Apple TV product.
However I came across a thing telling me I needed an internet connection in order for it to work, but where our televisions are, either the wireless internet is weak to nothing, and is unreliable from that distance, I want to be able to simply connect and play but now it seems Apple is misleading me on the capability of Apple TV.
I want to stream YouTube from my iPad to Apple TV, putting my iPad in a stronger range area and connected to Apple TV stream it... Or more importantly play content I have already on my device i.e. Video podcasts like IGN's Daily Fix, and stream it directly through the Apple TV onto my TV.
Please list all relevant information and requirements and capability I would have with Apple TV? I'm no where near an Apple store so I'll have to buy online so I want to make sure the product will work like they say it's suppose to.

I have the same issue and couldn't find an answer either. The problem is that the Apple TV requires an internet connection if you want to AirPlay internet content from your iPhone to the Apple TV, e.g. if the Apple TV isn't connected to the internet somehow, then Netflix or Youtube won't AirPlay from the iPhone to the Apple TV. I don't have a "house" internet connection currently, and when I bought my iPhone I was assuming I just can use my unlimited data plan to watch Netflix movies on the iPhone and AirPlay it to the big screen. No luck here, yet!!!
You can use the iPhone Hotspot and connect the AppleTV to that Hotspot, but I have a 5GB limit and that will be depleted with 2 movies or so, so that doesn't work either. I also can use the Hotspot to connect to my MacAir, which works great and 5GB limit is not the issue if you don't use it for movies, online gaming etc. But you could run into issues if you have to download big files, like updating the OS etc. That is something you have to consider when you are cutting the home internet.
I tried to somehow have the Apple TV use the Hotspot internet connection to just have access to the internet but use the iPhone unlimited data plan to stream movies, but the problem is that Apple TV can only connect to 1 WiFi network at a time and while it is connected to the hotspot, you can't connect to another network for AirPlay your content. Also, the ethernet port on the Apple TV (if used) will be prioritized and then WiFi would be turned off, ruling out the possibility to use ethernet and WiFi simultaneously to have one connected to the network using AirPlay and one using the Hotspot internet access. I believe the real problem is that the Apple TV needs internet access (for verification purposes???) while using AirPlay, and if there is no internet access through the network you are using for AirPlay, it might not work, at least I couldn't find a solution for it yet.
I was reading that with iOS 8 there might be a new feature that uses Peer-to-Peer technology between iOS devices and Apple TV, that might enable that you can connect to Apple TV with Peer-to-Peer and also connect it with the iPhone Hotspot for internet access (I would assume that the data amount from just being connected to the internet would be minor if the streaming data comes from the data plan itself from the iPhone).
That said, I can still stream content from my iTunes library to Apple TV, which is stored on my computer and doesn't need to be downloaded or streamed (Not the content I have purchased. Some folks mentioned bought content still needs internet access). So you can use your content you already have on the computer by using your local network. I hope somebody can give a solution to that problem! I was hoping to never have to deal with cable or telephone companies ever again, just using my mobile carrier, but I might be out of luck!
P.S: I also tried to connect my MacAir with the iPhone hotspot and then share this internet connection from the MacAir with my Apple TV. Didn't work either :-(

I hope so you can help to figure it out, without any complications....thank u!

It was not legitimately unlocked by the carrier it was originally locked to. ONLY the carrier it is locked to can authorize unlocking it.
In order to allow it to be used on a different carrier, the phone was hacked or jailbroken. An unauthorized modification was made to the phone. That modification has damaged the phone. You can not get support for it here or from Apple.

  • Do I need an internet connection to use my apple TV

I want to stream content from my computers to my Apple TV but I have no internet connection... is this possible?  (I will eventually get a connection but I am on a waiting list).

You do need an internet connection for certain things - getting the time from network on startup, authorising things for playback from iTunes, rentals (obviously).
AppleTV 2 will not play back protected iTunes store content without an authorisation check over the internet which is barmy as the computer will play them fine. You may be ok with non-protected music or files you've added yourself.
Sharing to Apple TV2 from iTunes uses something called Home Sharing needing your iTunes store credentials to be entered - again this may need an internet check initially so might stop all media sharing working until successfully ok'd.  You might be better waiting until you get an internet connection.

  • Revised: can I stream internet content from a cell phone network to the apple tv?

So I am trying to stream internet content from my iphone (phone network) to the Apple TV. I currently do not have internet at my house. What I do have is a macbook pro, airport express, ipad (wifi only), and of course iphone and apple tv. So is there a way to configure these devices to somehow stream my phone content to my apple tv. As of now the only way to connect the iphone to the apple tv is through wifi; the bluetooth that apple tv supports is elementary and will not support this connection. When the iphone is on a wifi network it automatically tries to use it for internet content. So 1 option would have to be a work around for making the iphone use the cell phone network for pulling internet content and using the wifi to broadcast this content to the apple tv. Another option would be to connect the iphone with the macbook pro via bluetooth (somehow) and then mirror the macbook pro to the apple tv via the wifi network setup with the airport express. ANY IDEAS?

You wouldnt be able to to use both networks at the same time. Either need to connect the Apple TV to the cell network (which will require a lot of data and impact battery life) or get a home plan and broadcast over the local network (wifi)

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If your iCloud account uses your family's Apple ID, you will pay $20/year for all your family members. If your iCloud account uses a different Apple ID than your family's Apple ID, you will pay only for you

That would depend on whether your model actually has a hard drive. If you have the new 2013 Retina model, then you have a fixed storage device built-in that cannot be modified after purchase.

  • HT204053 2 ipads in home - 2 different Apple ID's needed for different content?

If we have 2 I Pads in the house, do we need to have two different Apple ID's to keep content seperate on each device? Currently we have one Apple ID and some apps that I have put on my Ipod are appeariing on husband's IPad, I am getting an IPad so am wondering, do we need seperate ID's to prevent this problem.  If so, how do I create a new one?

If you share an iCloud account with the same ID on multiple devices, any data you sync with the shared account such as contacts and calendars are merged, and all devices get the merged list.  To prevent this, you need to have different iCloud accounts with separate IDs (you can continue to share the same Apple ID for purchasing from the iTunes and app stores).
To fix this decide which device(s) will be keeping the current iCloud account.  On the device(s) that will be changing accounts, if they have any photos in photo stream that are not in your camera roll or backed up somewhere else save these to the camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll.
Once this is done, on each device that is changing accounts go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (This will only delete the account from this device, not from iCloud.  The device(s) that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.)  When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On [iDevice].  Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom).  Then turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new account.
Finally, to un-merge the data in these accounts you will then have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the data you don't want (such as deleting the other person's contacts from your account, and vice versa).

    Hi,
Apple Care Level one responders are very Script Led.
This means they try to fit what you are saying into a Software or Hardware issue and into a Apple Care Period or  not.
If you are having problems convincing them it is an Account/Apple ID problem (even though it only effects the Mac's use of it in iMessages) ask to speak to a Level 2 person who should be more knowledgeable because fixing and Id issue is free and not subject to Apple Care.

When is apple TV going have more UK content, i have no interest in American Foot Ball or other related US stuff (We have our sports here in the UK and Europe) its about time apple got some UK content provider partners BBC, SKY, or others. All the others in the market place are, Why can't you?

The SKY player is available to anyone regardless of having a SKY box in the house or not.  I don't have SKY installed but I can subscribe to the SKY player to watch content or live streaming via the player which I then connect my Macbook Pro to my tv to watch Stargate Universe as it is on Sky 1.
If this function could be added to the Apple TV, then as you would imagine, would rock a lot of peoples world.
You can also use the Sky player to take advantage of "multi room" with out taking a second box.  You still pay the £10 a month sub. charge but don't pay for any extra equipment which in turn makes it more profitable for Sky.
Sky don't want you doing that though, they want to get you into a subscription with a set-top box.
The Sky player app is for mobile use and i very much doubt Sky would be interested in give you content on the TV without using their STB.
The content owner is king at the moment and only they will device how to make their content available. Just look at the legal issues in the US with the various mobile TV apps appearing and having channels removed.
