Apple TV no longer appears in devices list

Hey all:
I'm having a very frustrating problem with ATV and iTunes. I can no longer see the Apple TV in the devices list. Now, I know that there are two Apple Support KB documents that cover this issue. I've already gone through everything in those. I've reset the Apple TV back to factory defaults. I told iTunes to 'forget' the Apple TV. I have attempted to reconnect the Apple TV all to no avail. I even uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it thinking that all of the plist files would be deleted because I use the Hazel app's App Cleaner function to get rid of the plist. The plists were all deleted as I expected them to be.
As a control, I attempted to have my partner's Macbook sync with the Apple TV. That worked just fine. iTunes on her machine shows the ATV and synching worked perfectly. I quit the sync told her machine to 'forget' about the ATV and then restarted iTunes on my machine. Still no joy. What's even more bizarre is that I can stream from iTunes to the ATV so it's not a network problem. (Plus I can see everything else on the network. My partner's Macbook can see my iTunes library and I can see hers so it's not a sharing issue.)
This leads me to believe that somewhere there is some plist or xml file that controls what iTunes 'knows' about the Apple TV. Does anyone have an idea what file that might be and if it is a plist, what needs to be edited or what file needs to be deleted so iTunes will think that the ATV is brand new?
I want to reiterate that I've already reset the ATV to factory defaults (three times) and told iTunes to stop synching to the ATV as well so it's not something I haven't done. I searched through ~/Library and the system Library locations and didn't see anything that was obviously to do with ATV and iTunes. Any assistance would be appreciated. I've troubleshot this as far as I can go.

No, I don't have Netbarrier X. Ironically, I uninstalled Intego Virus Barrier X6 thinking that might be the problem but it isn't. There's currently no software firewall running on the system at all. The one thing I've been able to discern, so far, is that my partner's Macbook can connect and sync to the ATV and the only difference is that she didn't download the latest security patch (2010-001) that came out on Tuesday and I did. I've let Apple Support know but their response was "we haven't heard anything about this". However, since that is the only significant difference between our two machines and hers can connect at this point I'm presuming that's the issue.

  • 1st Generation Apple TV No Longer Appears as Device

Since the latest iTunes update, my Apple TV no longer appears as a device in iTunes on my Mac Pro even though it does on my MacBook despite both are completely up to date and are running on the same network (AirPort Extreme Dual Band) with EXACTLY the same network and firewall settings.
I have wiped and reinstalled the Apple TV SW and iTunes on the Mac to no avail. Since the Mac I use to host my Apple TV content is on my Mac Pro this is a problem.

I'm in the same boat.  My Mac Pro iTunes does not show my AppleTV (1st Gen) in the devices, nor is there an AppleTV icon in the Preferences anymore.  Here's the wierd thing... My MacBook Pro, on the same network, and same iTunes version, shows the AppleTV in Preferences.  But not in devices because it is "tied" to my Mac Pro's iTunes.
    Curious oddity....

  • Apple TV (1st Gen) no longer seen in device list in iTunes 10.4.

Apple TV (1st Gen) no longer seen in device list in iTunes 10.4. I can see it in the multiple speaker list and I can connect to it that way,  it is not seen as a device in order for me to sync content. Any ideas?
    I've tried:
    1.) rebooting my network
    2.) rebooing my AppleTV
3.) Running diagnostics on my AppleTV (everything is working 'fine.')
    4.) Rebooting iTunes
    5.) Rebooing my computer
    6.) .....
    Please help.

Check the firewall allows access for iTunes, try disabling the firewall if necessary. Try restarting the router.
Also try de/re connecting your iTunes library from your Apple TV; disconnect from the Apple TV (Settings/Computers/Your_Library) and reconnect again (Settings/Computers/Connect_to_iTunes) - You will need to re-sync previously synced content.

  • My apple tv gen 1 no longer appears in Devices on itunes.  Any ideas?

My apple tv gen 1 will longer appears in Devices in itunes and therefore can't synch.  Any ideas?  My ATV1 software is up to date, it connects to the Internet, my laptop iTunes is 11.1.3.8, connects to the internet.  Both connect my WiFi.  Since it stopped showing up in Devices, I reset my Apple TV 1 to original factory settings and updated its software.  Still does not appear.  I tried different laptops, all with the 11.1 version of iTunes.  Any suggestions?

Navigate to Settings > Computers > Your Library on the Apple TV, you may be told you will lose all synced content, but you can sync it back afterwards, you won't lose any purchased content that has yet to be transferred. Then select Settings > Computers > Connect To iTunes, note the passcode that appears on screen, click on the device in iTunes and enter the passcode when prompted.

  • I have removed my iPhone from icloud and it is no longer on the device list however I can still see it in icloud settings

I have taken my smashed (unusable) iPhone into apple for repair today and followed their instructions beforehand, removing the phone from icloud through my PC. However the guy at apple could not do anything as he said it was still connected to i cloud. On checking my account, my phone is no longer on the device list but can still be seen in icloud settings. He was stumped and asked if I had set up another apple id and maybe forgotten about it (I definitely haven't, I've had the same account for 6 years,) his other explanation was a technical glitch. I'm now stuck with a broken phone and a £60.00 a month bill and also pretty annoyed about the wasted 3.5 hour round trip. Any ideas please?  It would be much appreciated

    Hello
Try restoring the device and setting up as new.
If it is still shows an iCloud activation lock, then it's on an iCloud account
The wrong device was removed from an iCloud account.
Check any other Apple IDs you might have at
                 iCloud.com
Get signed into them and remove that device.
I wish this was the first time I seen this.
    Best of Luck

  • TS4006 Used find my ipone to erase a lost 4s and the device is no longer in the devices list.

I put in a request to have my iphone erased, it was offline at first but when I logged back in to check on it,  my device was no longer in the my devices list. I did not receive a confirmation email. Why is it no longer in my devices list and is there any way to tell it has been successfully wiped other than the confirmation email?

If it is a version 2 ATV, it will not appear in iTunes except where you can select it for Airplay. With the new ATV2, you go in the opposite direction (ATV2 to iTunes) after you have enabled sharing. The ATV1 could both store (sync) and/or stream content. The new one cannot. The ATV2 will appear as an AirPlay device in iTunes and in the iPod and Video areas on an iPhone, iPad, etc.
If your ATV is a version 1, you will have to reset it and go through the setup process using iTunes....

  • Apple TV (1G) doesn't appear in devices list when connected via ethernet

After upgrading to OS X Lion and iTunes 10.4 my Apple TV (1G) doesn't appear in the devices list when connected via ethernet. When I switch to wireless lan the device is shown and the sync process starts but can't copy the new films. The copy operation stops every time and sometines the device disappears from the list.
Despite of the upgrading of OS X and iTunes all the settings are unchanged.
    Anyone an idea?

Since my last update, I've gathered more information.  I'm almost certain this is not entirely a 10.7.1 issue, if an issue in 10.7.1 at all.  10.7.1 may have changed something that caused this issue to appear, but where I was having this problem weekly if not daily, I no longer have the problem. I changed routers.  I was using a new D-Link Xtreme N Gigabit RouterDIR-655.  This router was causing me pain with lock ups.  I replaced it with a Cisco Linksys E4200. I have not had a lockup in over 2 months now and not one sync issue with Apple TV nor my new iPhones, which sync wireless to iTunes on my Mac Pro.
Thinking about how my network is wired leads me to believe the issue was in the router, or maybe a network communication change in 10.7.1 that the DIR-655 was not supporting correctly. My MacPro and a few other hardwired access points in my house go directly to the router.  My AppleTV and Airport Extreme are connected to a Gigabit switch and the Gigabit switch is then connected to the router. I also turn off the wireless capabilities in my routers, as I prefer to let my Airport Extreme handle those duties.  This all means my normal hardwired communication path from my Mac Pro to Apple TV was going through the router, to the switch, to the Airport Extreme and then to my AppleTV.  My Apple TV is connected to the LAN port on the Airport extreme. By going wireless on the MacPro, I was bypassing the router altogether.
As I started out saying, since I replaced my router, my sync issues have also gone away. If your having Apple TV sync issues, you might want to look at the router as well.  Also, while I can’t remember the exact settings, I had opened up or enabled UPnP and other router settings in the DIR-655 to see if that would resolve the sync issues and it did not.  In the end, I just spent the money and bought a new router and life is good now.

  • Apple TV does not appear as a listed "Device" in iTunes

I just purchased Apple TV. It is working okay. I have two Macs synced with my Apple TV. One shows a "Device" in iTunes but the other does not. On the second computer, once Apple TV is loaded the device icon goes away. I am unable to access the necessary tabs to sync my photos to Apple TV. I have tried removing Apple TV and rediscovering it but it did not change anything. What am I doing wrong?

Welcome to the Apple Discussion Forums.
This is not unfortunately the same issue as the OP (original poster) described. In any case we would need further info about your set up, types of connections, router set up, network set up, how far you get in the set up process, that sort of thing. Your post will attract more interest if it is in a thread of it's own, so perhaps you could start a new thread with the information I suggested.
Also just to clear up the original matter: Things have now moved on since this thread started and an update has enabled photo streaming. The situation is now this:
Your main (Primary) itunes (the one with which you sync) will (should) always have the tv in the device list.
Your secondary itunes(s) (the ones which stream only) will (should) only show the tv in its device list if the library is selected as a source on the tv.

  • Does anyone know how to get the ATV1 to appear in device list in iTunes?

I have been trying for hours to get my Apple TV to appear in the device list in iTunes. Every time iTunes updates I lose the connection, however, this time it will not reconnect. I have read through many of the questions/responses and tried almost all of them but nothing has worked. The Apple TV is connected to the network and can access the iTunes store without issue.
I just purchased $300 in iTunes cards so that I could download my duaghters favorite shows and now I have no way of playing them on my TV. I have a PC running Windows Vista, if that matters.
I would appreciate any help/advice that can be offered.

go to the settings menu on the appletv
    unpair chain with the computer
let it do it's unparing stuff
    repair with the computer
type in the code on the computer
let it sync as it see fit

  • Apple TV no longer appearing in iTunes

after months of working flawlessly, Apple TV is no longer syncing to iTunes. It does not appear under Devices. I have checked the Preferences Apple TV tab and although it is set to Look for Apple TVs, none appear. On the Apple TV I checked the network settings and they are correct. I am able to view Movie Trailers therefore I can confirm that the connection is good. I have looked for the device on two computers (an iMac G5 and a MacBook) and it appears in neither. The iMac is on Tiger and this is the one that was previously synced to the Apple TV. The MacBook is on Leopard. On the MacBook (Leopard) I added iTunes and iPhoto to the firewall, still nothing. I have read some people suggesting "Changing the iTunes Library through Apple TV, but that only works if it shows up under Devices which it currently does not.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    It's not supposed to be.
You view the items in iTunes from your AppleTV.
Apple TV is available on all other IOS devices (iphones and Ipad) and works great. Apple TV has has internet connection.
Do you mean you want to use AirPlay to push to the TV (instead of using the ATV to view what is in iTunes)?

  • How I fixed my Apple TV dissappearing from my iTunes Device List

For those looking for a magic cureall you won't find it here.
The long and short of the matter, the problem was on my end. Specifically an element of my ethernet's driver configuration utility wasn't loading properly. So, the AppleTV would show up in my device list and then dissappear after about 5 minutes and the only way to get it to show back up in my itunes device list is to cycle the power on the AppleTV. Unfortunately doing this would cause the same dissappearing AppleTV out of my iTunes device list.
I'm one of those fools that bought that KillerNIC overpriced ethernet card and I had disabled the killernic tray application. As I recall I had some issues with my initial windows install and had to disable it to keep the computer from rebooting constantly. When I fired up msconfig and had teh tray application launch when windows boots up then the AppleTV showed up in my device list and everything was fine and is still fine.
I spent about 2 hours on the phone with Apple tech support, who were as helpful as they could be when the problem was on my end. They even transfered me to one of their product specialists and he had some suggestions, but we soon realized the problem wasn't with the AppleTV, but something on my end.
A few things to try, that the Apple tech reccomended:
-If you are connected with a wired ethernet, then plug the AppleTV directly into your computer (PC or Mac) with the ethernet cables. The ethernet jack on the AppleTV is autonegotiating so you don't need a crossover cable. We tried this on my PC and the AppleTV didn't show up in my device list. But when we tried doing this on my Macbook the AppleTV showed up just fine. Which showed both myself and the Apple tech that all is well with the AppleTV, but something in my configuration was amiss.
Don't waste your time on port mapping or port forwarding or any of that business, since the AppleTV is behind the firewall those sorts of things are not going to affect the AppleTV. Now the tech did say that some routers are flakier then others and a setting change or two might cause the AppleTV to stop working. His suggestion was to save my current setting and reset the router to default settings. Do not revert the firmware to an earlier version, but put the router settings for the current firmware into a default state. I know this is tedious, but if you are as frustrated as I was a few hours ago, then any suggestion to try is helpful.
For the record here is my system and network stuff:
    router: Dlink DGL-4300 (V1.8)
    ethernet: Bigfoot Networks KillerNIC (v3.1.2.3)
OS: WinXP (but the tech didn't think that the OS was the issue)
I guess the moral of the story is why did it work and what changed to make it stop working? I was 100% convinced that an iTunes update caused teh problem to fail, because heck it was working once and now it doesn't work and I forgot that one bit that made my setup nonstandard (the missing tray application).
Now this might not help anyone but me, but just on the off chance that someone else out there has more money then sense, bought an overpriced ethernet adapter, disabled the tray application, and is now having problems with dissappearing devices. Well, do I have a solution to your problems.
    ds

It's not a matter of unpairing it from the iMac. You need to pair your iMacs remote to it and the ATV remote to the ATV. If you don't pair you iMac to it's remote, then the ATV remote will always be able to activate it, even if the ATV's remote is paired to the ATV (and vice versa).
In case you don't know how to pair the remote. Hold the remote aout 3" from the iMac and hold the menu and next buttons down for about 5 seconds. You will see a linked chain on your screen once there are paired.

  • IPad does not appear in devices list on itunes

When I connect iPad to laptop it does not appear in the iTunes devices list. I have tried all the recommended Apple support actions reinstalling iTunes etc but nothing seems to work. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your tip. It didn't work in quite the way you outlined but it did help me to get my IPad recognised by ITunes. When I did what you suggested ITunes came back with something like ' can't connect to your IPad because the driver is missing, delete and reinstall ITunes to resolve this problem' . When I did that the IPad appeared in the Devices list.
I assume from this that the device driver was defective. Many thanks.

  • AppleTV quit synching, no longer in iTunes Device List

Darn. Just realized my AppleTV hasn't synched to my MacBook Pro for 3 weeks.
In AppleTV settings, it shows that it is linked to: JP's BigBook Music. In iTunes, my music library is called: JP's BigBook Music
However, my AppleTV does not appear in the iTunes device list. I have "look for AppleTVs" checked on. I can stream music from my MacBook to AppleTV via AirTunes. I can connect and control the AppleTV from my iPhone.
What the heck? I'm tired of this.
    Jim

Wifi channels are approximately 5 Mhz apart, but each channel is around 30 Mhz wide, so unfortunately they tend to overlap which means that channel 4 (say) and channel 6 can still interfere with each other to a certain extent. How much they can interfere depends on the equipment, I have networks using channels 1, 4, 7, 10 and 13, so theoretically they all overlap, but I don't have any issues at all with my Apple tv's or any other equipment for that matter.
Other household equipment such as microwave's cordless phones, baby monitors, garage door openers and the like can all use similar channels and can be almost impossible to detect without specialist hardware. Additionally due to the nature of the Apple tv it is often located to other electrical equipment which might cause a problem.
If you've ruled out interference, it may be that the settings on your AP's need attention, however I doubt that I've just been lucky to the extent that I have numerous Apple tv's here at home and at work that have been problem free when others have gotten wonky units. I suspect there is a reason for your poor performance other than the Apple tv itself.
