Apple TV - No Sound Output

I have an apple tv set up with my macbook and it the past it has worked with no complications until tonight. When I try to link it , it either kicks my macbook off Apple tv altogether or it plays video but doesn't play the sound OR it selects the Apple TV downstairs but the display is still showing on the my TV upstairs.
I've checked to see if the software is updated. I've also gone into settings and selected the audio output to my Apple TV upstairs. It doesn't let me select that, everytime I click it, it automaticaly unselects in and chooses internal speakers. It won't even allow it for a second.
So confused. I'm on a Mac OS X 10.8.5

I haven't personally had this problem, but I believe in order to hear music through your TV speakers, you have to use the headphone port instead of the AV cable.

  • Can Apple TV produce sound output on a wireless speaker and a cable-connected speaker simultaneously?

    My situation is this:
I have a one bedroom apartment.  In the main room, I have a Bose Soundlink (via bluetooth, which may be my first problem!!!).  I just got an Apple TV (3) and want to connect it to the TV in my bedroom.  I was considering getting some not-too-expensive speakers to improve upon my TV sound.  One goal of this would be to be able to access my iTunes music and play the same thing in both rooms.
I gather that Apple TV is no good at hosting two or more wireless speaker signals, but I'm hopeful it can manage a wireless and a direct cable input??? Does the TV need to be on to facilitate this or can it just go directly through the Apple TV?  And what use, if any, woudl the optical audio output do for me in this situation?
Thanks for any and all answers!

    Paul
You said the Optical to the home theatre doesn't work, do you mean it had the same sound issue or that the OA to Home Theatre didn't produce any sound?  If the latter then first check the cable is working (red light on the tip once the other end is in the ATV).
Sorry I am not addressing the main question of poor sound as others will know that better, but the OA issue might be solvable and improve your listening, unless of course you have rented The Artist

  • No sound output to TV using Apple dock - video is fine

I'm baffled. I have a new 80GB iPod Classic, a brand new Apple dock, and Apple A/V Component cable. When I watch a video or photo slideshow, everything works great. However, when I want to listen to my iPod's music through my TV's speakers, using the same setup, there is NO sound output to the TV at all. Why would the audio play when watching photos or video, but no sound when all I want is music? Please help!

I haven't personally had this problem, but I believe in order to hear music through your TV speakers, you have to use the headphone port instead of the AV cable.

  • Sound output: keeps changing from internal speakers to Apple TV

My iMac keeps changing the soudn output from internal speakers to Apple TV. Why. This makes it a pain. Eveytime I use the iMAc, I have to go into preferences>sound>output and switch to internal speakers. Any ideas how to stop this form happeneing?
    Thanks!

If you use LogMeIn, it is their sound driver.  I'm having identical problem and it started after using LogMeIn.

  • 2 Apple TV's and no sound output when using AirPlay/mirroring?

    Hi,
Bought my first apple tv and when air mirroring was able to go to my system preferences and choose sound output for it and it worked beautifully when I wanted to play a movie on my computer and send it to the TV.  Bought a second apple tv for the bedroom, both are connected over wifi.  Using Mountain Lion on my iMac.  Now it won't play any sound on either and will not let me choose which apple tv in system preferences - sound.  Any help would be appreciated
    Sue
I have tried turning Apple TV on first, then choosing sound output before turning on air mirroring.  Problem is it won't let me choose, stays on internal speakers.
This fix won't work for me.

Might I recommend the following sample code instead?

  • Apple TV status light dead & no video/sound output

After our move I hooked my entertainment center up and the Apple TV is dead.  The status light won't illuminate even after plugging in.  It will not respond to the remote as the status light does not respond.  There is no video or sound output.  I did a "restore" in iTunes (it recognized it so I know it "exists") but it is still unresponsive.  I am working with known good cables and hardware.  The only sign of "life" in the Apple TV is that I can see a red light eminating from the back of the unit around the optic audio port.  There are no network lights (if there are any).
    Thanks for your help,
    Ben

Philly - I think you are confusing the Digital AV Adapter with something else.  It is for use only with TV's and other video displays that have HDMI ports - not those that don't.   Per Apple in their info on this device:  "Watch slideshows and movies on the big screen in up to 720p by connecting your iPad, iPhone 4, or iPod touch (4th generation) to an HDTV or HDMI-compatible display."
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC953ZM/A
    http://www.apple.com/ipad/features/mirroring.html
As I said before, I've not tried this adapter, so I don't know if its ability to mirror the iPad's screen is somehow blocked by the HBO Go app.  As Demo indicated, it seems like the app may be blocked this way as well.  Personaly, I don't need to this as I have HBO and Cinemax On Demand through my cable supplier on all televisions in my home.  I might try it when I visit relatives who have Internet access but not HBO.  If so, I'll report back my experience.
In regard to why Apple TV does not support HBO Go, some additional research seems to suggest HBO may not like the level of content security provided by Airplay.  Interestingly, while Apple TV can't stream it to a large screen, HBO Go is now available for use on televisions through the new Roku box --  provided one has an HBO subscription through a cable or satellite provider.  There is still no way to get HBO other than through an authorized cable or satellite service.

  • Can not change sound output. Help Please

Well, i've been digging all the forums lately in web. my problem is, i can't change my 'system' sound output to my sound card which is Native Instruments Audio8 Dj.
Let me explain my problem decently. I do the usual procedure, system preferences > sound > n then select the output. but nothing happens. it is always set on internal speakers or headphone or whatever plugged in to the *Built-in Output*. I try switching from audio-midi setup n that doesn't work as well. The system perfectly recognizes the sound card, i can get output from sound card with applications which have their own output settings. But i cant change the system output. I have the latest version of soundflower loaded(this might be causing the problem who knows), i used many soundcards before(or maybe even ex-drivers?) n they used to work until i updated to snow leopard. I also tried trashing the files in macintosh hd > library > preferences > audio >>
and those files *did not regenerate* after restart(like 10 times), so i had to copy them from my imac.(hehe). i tried resetting pram or nvram.(didn't do any good too)And also i tried trashing soundpref.plist which didn't do me any good neither. Now i need that sound card to give me my system output. I don't need drivers of any other ex-sound cards or whatever. My drivers are up to date. And im pretty sure this ain't an hardware fail.
    So, any ideas? Thx.

I am having the exact same problem. I have spoken with Apple Care and they are having my case reviewed by "Engineers," apparently. Its very frustrating as I cannot listen to iTunes or any of my video games through my really nice monitor speakers. FYI, I had this problem without installing Sound Flower, since then I have installed it in the hopes that having something different to select it might work but no changes. If I hear any good news from Apple I will be back to let you know. This seems to be a very rare problem as I have only found one other post about this issue.

  • The sound output does not work on my ipod

    Hi There,
I have an Ipod 4 th generation and the sound output no longer works on any device.  I've reset and reinstalled the software but nothing appears to work?
    Any ideas please?
    Serial number: 9C6463XJV9R
    Thanks Chris

If none of the 5 R's helped address the issue, it's likely hardware related.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
As to what exactly is damaged/faulty, no there is no certain way to tell.  It could be the iPod's audio chip or something else on the logic board.
Either way you'll need to have your iPod serviced/replaced either by Apple or a third party company.

  • Is there a way to force A Mini to recognize the HDMI as a sound output.

Is there a way to force the Mac mini to recognize the HDMI as a sound output?  I have the HDMI going through a matrix switch and the video works fine but the audio is not recognized.  My Apple TV has no problem with both audio and video through the same set up to a tv.

    Some general checking:
Open System Information found in Applications->Utilities.
On the left side under hardware, click Audio.  In the right
pane, Expand items if necessary to reveal the contents and
see if there is an HDMI listing.  If so, click on it to get additional
    info.
Also, have you connected the Mini directly to the TV?  Narrows down
if it is actually the Mini or just how the Mini is working with the
    switch.
Another possibility is that there is a power up sequencing issue.
Ran into a situation with my Yamaha receiver, Mini, and Samsung TV
that if things were not powered in the right sequence I could only
get two channel audio and sometimes only internal audio.  With my
setup, I needed to power up the TV (waiting for it to come up completely
showing the searching for signal box), power up the Yamaha, then finally
power up the Mini.  Also, after all this, if anything was switched, I would
end up having to reboot the Mini to get audio the way it should be.

  • Sound output channel keeps switching by itself every few seconds

Hey guys, I have this sound output issue with my Macbook pro 2010 September version that every once in a while, the audio output would keep swapping between headphone, digital output and the speakers when NO headphone or digital output or what so ever is actually plugged in. During this time i am unable to adjust sounds, and my menu bar would become very slow to respond (the sound icon and Soundsource application would stop responding during this time). After a while (could be less than 10 minutes or last to about an hour, it varies), it returns back to normal by itself.
I've read many posts on Apple forum about this issue, but i haven't found a suitable solution. Also, I read that for most, when the audio output doesn't work it would usually be a output socket issue that there is a RED light in the socket. But for me, at times it has a RED light, at times, it doesn't, and sometimes the RED light would switch on and off by itself for a couple of times, depending on how long this issue lasts until it returns to its normal state by itself.
    I have tried:
    1. plugging the headphone into the socket and take it out quickly
    2. Downloading Soundsource: i heard that Soundsource has an option of manually adjusting the sound output channel instead of letting the computer switch automatically, but unfortunately I downloaded the latest (2.5) version of the software and it doesn't have that option on my macbook pro.
    3. I also tried Cmd + Opt + P + R
The result however is that none of this worked.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have both and haven't experienced this at all. Very strange. I do get a lot of random channel changes however when I put my iPad on the remote, the cat walks over it or the dog sits on it.
That being said, I don't use the Samsung remote at all for the TV and never have done. I dislike it and find it unresponsive. I use a different remote to change through the available outputs and the Vision remote for Vision and for switching the TV on and off.

  • The choice of headphone jack is not showing up under the system preferences - sound output options.  Therefor, my speakers suddenly do not work with my iMac

On my Intel based iMac, OS 10.6.8, my speakers suddenly were not transmitting sound. When I checked the System Preferences, Sound output, the headphone option was no longer available.  This has always worked in the past - what is up?
    Anyone have any suggestions???
    Ellen

    Applications > Utilities > AudioMIDI Setup.app
    Audio Devices window
    Side Bar
    Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so uncheck it.
Plug in the headphone and check whether in the output  headphone shows up in the same panel.
If so, you can adjust the volume there.

  • Sound output to Airport Express horrible except through iTunes Airplay

I've had an Airport Express for 2 or so months now, and I use it for both wifi routing as well as its Airplay functionality, wired into my stereo. I've used it with Airplay directly from iTunes as well as setting the system sound output on my Mac to go over to the Airport Express.
As of today, only the Airplay over iTunes works without issue. When I go to the system sound preferences and select the Airport Express, I hear a very loud pop, and all output is muffled and highly distorted. If iTunes is playing, that sounds bad too.  However, with the system sound prefs set to internal speakers and ONLY iTunes set to Airplay, it sounds fine.  This is not good at all for me, as I often send audio from Youtube and other streaming sites to Airport Express to play on my stereo.
How can I get sound output to Airport Express from the sound preferences to play nice again?
PS, I have the identical issue with Apple TV, though I don't use it regularly for Airplay. System output to Apple TV is terrible, iTunes Airplay to it is fine, and the audio from content on Apple TV is fine.

Is there any way to output any sound from a computer to Airport Express, not just iTunes?
Yes, check out Rogue Amoeba's AirFoil.

  • No sound output from dock connector or headphones but speaker is fine

    I've got a 3GS which I've had since October.
Recently, there has been no sound output from the headphone socket - or rather, what does come out is very strange, sounding almost electronically distorted.
I thought that maybe the headphone jack was broken, but now I've found out that the same thing can be heard through a dock when the iPod is connected this way.
I'm fairly sure the dock connector is still fine as the phone charges and can be controlled by the dock etc
Most of the discussions I've found relate to sound not coming from the speaker on the phone, but this is absolutely fine.
    Any ideas?

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you tried resetting the PMU?
I'm not optimistic that this will help any more than the procedures you've already tried, but it won't hurt to try.
Do you still have your OS 9 installation? If so, try booting into OS 9 and see if the problems with the audio are happening there, too. If so, you can bet it's a hardware problem.
How big is your hard drive and how much space remains available on it? If you don't have your OS 9 installation in order to check out whether it's a hardware problem and you have enough available hard drive space, you may want to try an Archive and Install of the OS in order to make sure it isn't an OS X system-wide problem. If that doesn't do it, you could back up your hard drive and restore your software.
All of this may just be spinning your wheels, but it's all stuff you can try before shelling out a lot of money for repairs.

  • System Sound Output Level Reset After Reboot ?

Whenever my iMac Core Duo is rebooted, system sound output level always get reset to value 0.56 (-24dB) as shown in utility "/Applications/Utilities/Audio Midi Setup". I have to increase the system sound output level to desired value of 0.75(-12.75dB) to match with built-in amplifier of Altec Lansing FX6021 speaker system. The desired setting lasts until next reboot. Is there any way I can fix the system sound output level at desired level between reboots ? Why I have to be involved in such constant struggle with the iMac for such simple audio configuration ?
Audio Hijack Pro 2.6.7 wihtout Soundflower 1.1 virtual audio device has been installed. Audio hijack function of this utility has not been used at all. Thank you for any pointer.

Thanks for the confirmation that my iMac is not an isolated case. In case you are not willing to use Audio Hijack Pro, just use Automator to create an Automator script to set system volume (In Automator's Library plane: Applications>System>Set System Volume) and save it as application. Set this application as Login Items for your account through following menu path:
System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items. Whenever you login with this account, the script will be invoked automatically by Mac OS X and sound levels for output, input and alert will be set to user preferred levels. For older versions of Mac OS X (10.3.9 and earlier) without Automator, same effect can be achieved with Apple Script, use Apple Script Editor instead of Automator to create Apple Script and set it as Login Items. This workaround has been working consistently on my iMac Intel Core Duo.
