Apple TV not syncing back to itunes

Strange things happening here...
At some point I bought a song on my apple tv. When syncing to itunes, I got a message saying the song could not be synced (i guess it was corrupt, but I checked "don't show this message again", so I can't reproduce the error message).
Now, every time I start itunes, it tries to sync with atv, but always tries to sync the corrupt file and fails.
Not too big of a problem, but somehow the atv doesn't sync back to itunes at all, since the 10 other songs I bought since then, seem to have the same problem of not syncing back to itunes, although itunes seems to try and sync for approx. 45 secs or so...
Now, a few questions :
1) How do I get itunes to show the error message again, so I can check if the new songs have the same problem.
2) How can I delete the 1 song that started all this trouble from atv ?
3) In the worst case scenario, how do I format the atv, so I can start from scratch again?
Thanks

OK, just posting this because it might help others...
This afternoon, I got ready to call the local apple support, and with the phone in my hand I started up itunes.
And you won't believe this, but it synced beautyfully, in both directions ...
What the * ?
There has only been 1 change on my mac, and that's the installation of the latest security update !!!
So my calculated guess would be, that the last security update closed certain ports, that atv needs to sync back to itunes, and that this security update opened those ports again...
I can only hope the next update won't f*ck things up again.
Anyway, my problem is solved, and I hope a lot of others out there are fine too after installing the 2009-001 security update.

  • Apps purchased on iOS not syncing back to iTunes

    Hi,
I am have been having this problem. Whatever apps I purchase or update on my iOS devices, they do not sync back to iTunes. There is no error message. They just don't sync back. On a quick search, I have seen that some other people have faced the same issue but I haven't seen any solution so far.
Here is what I am using -
    iTunes 11 on Mac OS X 10.8.2, iPhone 4S with iOS 6, iPad 3 with iOS 5.

Here is how to transfer apps from iphone to iTunes.
    Step 1:
First, you need to “Sign In” with Apple ID that you’ve used when downloading the applications from your iPhone. For this, go to “Store” menu entry in iTunes, and choose “Sign in” option.
    Step 2:
Now, you will need to authorize your computer unless iTunes won’t let you transfer your iPhone applications.
    Step 3:
Right click on the name of your iPhone in the left hand explorer bar of iTunes and select “Transfer Purchases” option. If you use multiple accounts to buy apps on your iPhone, then you will have to repeat these first two steps with each iTunes account.
    Step 4.
You can use iPhone Transfer to transfer app from iPhone to iTunes.

You may have to try deleting all the music from your phone (by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipping All Music and tapping Delete), then sync it all back on with iTunes in order to fix this.

  • PDF loaded into iBooks will not sync back to iTunes

I accessed a PDF on the web from Safari on my iPhone 4s, then opened it in iBooks.  Then I connected the iPhone to my iMac and synced with iTunes.  I was expecting the new PDF to sync back to my iTunes, but that did not happen.
Am I to assume that PDF files loaded into iBooks on my iPhone or iPad will NOT sync back to iTunes?
    -Thanks

It was VERY difficut, but I finally did it!
First I was annoyed because I couldn't get the PDFs to show in my iTunes Library.  As near as I can tell, performing a backup of my iPad did that.  In the past 'Transfer Purchases' did the job.
What nearly drove me bonkers was getting the content of my iBooks Library to sync to the device.  There was just no way to do it.  Not my PDFs and not even the purchased books!   I tried to get the Library on the left and my iPad on the right so I could drag and drop.  NOPE.
I played around a while and finally got both to show on the screen so I could drag and drop.  STUPID
What I think worked for me:  I started in Music Library and clicked on the +Add to icon on the top right.  This pulled up my iPad for drag and drop.  Then I switched the button on the top left from 'music' to 'books'.  Finally I could remove or add my content to iBooks.
It worked perfectly before, why did they change it!
The music App makes me drag and drop, which I never had to do before.  All I had to do was check or uncheck songs in a playlist and sync the playlist.
    Apps works fine, no complaints.
    Podcasts, another fine mess...
I noticed Video was fixed when I went back in.
Oh, the kicker, my iTunes is not responding today.

  • Movies Purchased on ATV will not sync back to iTunes

I've tried "Transfer Purchases" - no good. I've gone to Automatic Sync - no good. The movies and shows I've purchased on the ATV itself will not sync back to my iTunes library, but the movies I purchased from the computer will sync to the ATV. So ... where am I going wrong?

    Hi,
I had exactly this issue. It seems apple is not altogether consistent with regards to this. I phone tech support, and they assured me it was a content issue, as purchases made on the appletv in any content besides hdtv would not be synced back to the itunes library on your computer. However, in talking to the itunes support, they assured me this was an appletv issue.
Eventually they allowed me to download the tv shows I had purchased (standard def) again, allowing me to see them both in appletv, and in itunes so they could be backed up.
Moral of the story is I think, dont purchase shows in standard def in appletv, only purchase through itunes.
Hopefully they will get this sorted out in the next few days, if they update appletv at Macworld, although if its a rights issue, perhaps it wont be that simple.

  • Movies rented on Apple TV, not synching back to iTunes?

I thought I understood that movies you rent from the Apple TV 2.0 would synch back to iTunes and be available to watch on the Macintosh or from there could be synched to a current iPod for viewing. (For 24 hours once the movie is started on any device, or for 30 days which ever comes first.)
I took the Apple provided update to Apple TV (40GB) so now I am on version 2.0. I took the iTunes update to 7.6. My Apple TV seems to sync just fine with my iTunes library, i.e. otherwise couldn't be happier with the product.
I launched iTunes on my Mac; my Apple TV appeared as a device and then went back to my TV and rented a movie directly from Apple TV interface and watched it immediately. That process went just as Apple described it should, i.e. very smooth. However, immediately after watching the movie, I checked iTunes for rented movies (devices: Apple TV, Movies tab, and didn't see it. In the Rented movie section of the screen it said, "There are no rented movies in your iTunes library that can be transferred to this Apple TV." This is correct, but I just thought somewhere I would see the movie I had rented from the Apple TV within my iTunes. I tried proactively hitting the synch button; nothing. Went to the Movies library; nothing.
Perhaps I misunderstood the process as described by Apple (Steve Jobs 2008 MacWorld keynote) and the process really doesn't work in the ATV to iTunes direction. But I'm hoping there is something simple I missed in my settings in either iTunes or Apple TV to enable this to work.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you so much! I was under the wrong impression about moving movies rented on the Apple TV back to the computer. The forum has come through for me three out of three times I have posted question. Thanks again!
*Can I play my rental on more than one device?*
If you download a rented movie on your computer, you can transfer it to your Apple TV, iPod, or iPhone. Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only be viewed on one device at a time. *If you rent the movie on your Apple TV, it is not transferable to any other device and you must watch it on your Apple TV.*

  • Ipod does not sync back to itunes

    Hi there,
just got the new 80GB iPod and have a problem when I sync my iPod back with iTunes. iTunes seems to load new media on it (pictures, music etc.) but sometimes 'drops' everything I did on my iPod since the last sync. I was very disappointed as I just rated about 60 songs and when I plugged it back in, iTunes told me I had not played any songs in the past two days and none of the ratings were transfered to iTunes on my Mac. The iPod did NOT run our of battery and I did NOT change the ID3-Tags in iTunes of all the songs before syncing again.
On my past iPods I noticed that songs that have been changed in iTunes will not get the ratings of the iPod but I never experienced the complete "ignorance" of me listening to any music on my iPod.
Also, probably not related to this issue: Has anyone ever had the new iPod not skipping songs when you pressed the next or previous track buttons? I sometimes cannot skip but still navigate or scroll through the menus etc.
Thanks for any help - I never had those problems with my first and fourth generation iPod.

formatting the ipod resolved the problem for me, and also on a friends ipod with the same problem (160GB version)

  • Updated apps on devices not syncing back to itunes library?

Before the questionable "upgrade" to iTunes 11, I had no problems when I would update apps directly on one of my devices, and whenever it later synced to my iTunes on my MBP, it would automatically update those apps in the library.  I have two iPads, one iPhone 5, and an iPod Touch 5th Gen.  So, for example, I could update apps on my iPad 3, and when I synced it to my MBP, iTunes would update the files in its library. Then, when another device synced, it would get the updated app.  No need to download individually to every device from the App store.
Ever since the iTunes 11 upgrade, though, this no longer works.  All I did was update, made no changes.  But I can update apps on my iPad, sync it to my MBP, and the apps aren't updated on the MBP anymore.  So when I sync the other devices, they don't get the changes.  If I do the updates from within iTunes, it'll go out to all the devices when they sync still, but the updates on the devices are NOT updating the itunes library even when synced now.
I don't know if there's another new setting somewhere that I'm missing that has to be checked now for this to happen, I've been looking around and don't see anything that seems to apply.
I'm not even going to go into the flakey WiFi sync issues where it's totally random whether it'll see any of the devices or not until I go through random power cycles on them - another "feature" I never had problems with in iTunes 10...  I'd almost revert back to 10 except there ARE some features I do like with 11...
Thanks for any ideas or help.

I was having an issue syncing iTunes to my iPad (original, iOS5), and the above suggest didn't make a difference. But it turned out my problem was I didn't have enough free space on my iPad, and I wasn't seeing any error message explaining it.
I just wanted to add this detail, in case some else has an issue syncing apps for this reason.

  • Some purchased content on Apple TV will not sync back to iTunes

I have purchased a series on my AppleTV which downloads every week, as expected. I manually sync the AppleTV with my iTunes library located on my iMac. Upon using "transfer purchases" from iTunes, only three of the six downloaded show episodes actually transfer over. Subsequent attempts result in nothing being transferred.
To further troubleshoot, I unlinked the iTunes library from the Apple TV, using the Apple TV UI. Everything EXCEPT the three episodes that would not transfer over, and a couple of rented movies, was removed from the Apple TV. I then re-connected to my usual iTunes library, attempted to transfer purchases, but with no luck.
    Any ideas?

I have the same issue where I can make purchase via itunes and it syncs with ATV. However the reverse from ATV to itunes does not. I saw an earlier post in the year to deauthorize the account on itunes that fixed the problem- tried that on itunes and then selected the transfer from ATV to itunes on the file menu and was unsuccessful. All software is current using itunes 8.02.2
It was working previously so I am not sure if an ATV software upgrade caused this or not.

  • Play position in audible audio books not syncing back from iPhone to iTunes

Hi everybody. I hope I don't open a redundant thread, but i couldn't find one that has this topic.
Anyway, I am syncing some audio books from audible to my iPhone. When i start playing them on the phone, the play position is in sync to the position in iTunes. Now let's say i listen one hour on the phone and then sync again.
Contrary to what i expected, the further advanced play position from the phone is NOT synced back to iTunes but the old position from iTunes is synced again to the phone. So the next time I access the audio book on the phone I start where i started in the first place.
Is this a bug or have I missed some setting wheresoever?
    Thanks for any suggestions!

I have seen others complain about it. For me I never listen via PC (only phone) so I haven't had an issue yet. Though I do when I stop listening look at the time and chapter/file I am at and go over to Notes and jot it down. Due to reboots or other issues, it has lost where I was but with my notes, I can quickly get back.

  • Apple TV movie purchase doesn't sync back to iTunes

I'd recently purchased a movie directly from within Apple TV but it is not synchronizing back to iTunes. The content on my computer synchronizes correctly to the Apple TV but my purchases and rentals are not synchronizing back the other way.
I've tried removing the synchronization settings from both the computer and the Apple TV and then setting it back up again. My music synchronizes over but -- again -- my movie sits happily on the Apple TV but not in iTunes.
When I look at the movie on the Apple TV, it has the little trash can indicator next to it.
I'm using Apple TV 2.1 and iTunes 7.7.1 (on a MacBook Pro).
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

I have a similar issue. Just got an Apple TV and synced it to iTunes on MacBook Pro and everything worked fine - got about 7gb of photo and music content synced to ATV without any issues.
However, when I purchased a TV episode on ATV, the whole setup is stuck. Every time I start a sync on iTunes, it tries to sync the purchased file (about 500mb) from ATV to iTunes first, before getting to the photos and music sync in the other direction. The problem is that iTunes completely hangs in about 20-30% into the copy process, with the coloured wheel mouse cursor running infinitely.
I've now upgraded the software components (ATV to 2.2, iTunes to 8.0.1), tried removing the ATV relationship to computer and adding it back again, restarting both ATV and MBP in the process, also removed com.apple.itunes.plist as some forum suggested. Nothing, it ends still in the same place. I am yet to do a full reset to ATV, as I'd prefer not to loose the purchased file, which I do not have any copies of outside the ATV.
Through the attempts the ATV now is empty of any photos/music that were synced to there before, there is just the one sad little purchased episode. And I can not add anything back, as iTunes always starts with the purchase sync... which fails.
One thing some sites are hinting to but I haven't quite understood is the notion of primary and secondary iTunes Store authorizations. The iTunes account I use was created on a separate PC version of iTunes. However, the MBP is authorized too and I've used it to add credit, etc.
    Any thoughts?

  • On-the-go sync back to itunes

    Hello,
I am using apple TV (2.2) with itunes (8.0.1) on a PC. I created an on-the-go playlist on the apple tv and syncing automatically - but the on-the-go playlist does not appear in itunes. With my ipod (5. gen) I can sync them back.
    Any idea what to do?
The only way i found until now is renaming the playlist in apple tv, than it shows up in itunes.

    It is working now:
just save it on apple tv as a new play list and it will be sync back to itunes.
Important: Install latest version of apple TV software (2.3.1) and itunes (8.1)

iphone 4 not recognized and will not sync after latest itunes update.  I have done recommendedl trouble shooting and uninstalled and reinstalled itunes to no avail. Can I go back to earlier version of itunes or restore computer to fix?

'The installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support\Web kit.resources\inspector\Images\Spinner Inactive Selected.gif.'
That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • Apple TV not Syncing, port3689, help!

I bought a movie through the Apple TV. It downloaded fine and is sitting on the Apple TV( The software is up to date.) but, it will not sync back into my itunes(I have a four month old iMac and the software is all up to date.) When I go to iTunes and do a forced Sync I get this message." Check that any firewall software running on this computer has been set to allow communications on port 3689" It was working fine a few weeks ago and now it's not syncing at all. I have not changed any of my internet settings and my firewall on the iMac has always been set to " Allow all in coming connections". I even turn the firewall off on the router but it still doesn't sync. I don't want to reset my Apple TV because I don't want to lose the movie I just bought.
Is this a known bug? Is there a fix?
    Thanks Andrew

Last time this happened to me, I had a router issue (airport extreme) and just needed to restart my router. I'd also try restarting the apple tv and computer if you haven't already done so.
Also check for updates on all three devices to make sure everything's current.
