Apple tv oddity

ive noticed something strange with my apple tv that sometimes it actually switches itself from being on standyby to being on now i can only think of 2 possibilities for this one my cats are playing with the remote as its the same size as a lighter and their always hiding them or i have a ghost in my house lol the thing is i always put the remote out of reach of the cats, does anyone else have this problem of it switching itsself on?

it's something that many people have noticed and it's not something new.
i wouldn't worry about it to be honest, as the appletv doesn't have a "real" standby function anyway, all it does it turn off the video output.

  • Apple logo oddity

    Every once in a while, as I'm using my phone, suddenly my phone will flash the apple logo for about 5 seconds and the screen will lock. Why does it do this? I can't find anyone with a similar problem.

    The exact same thing has happened to mine. Apples software corrupted it, and their response is too bad, it's out of warranty. Just another sneaky way of Apple making you buy more of their products by putting thsese little bugs into thier software updates. Being that they are proprietery, they have us by the balls.

  • One of 4 sent messages doesn't show up in the Sent mailbox - why?

    Here is a strange thing I noticed just now. Thought it seems email has sometimes not been showing up in the Sent mailbox at other times as well.
    I sent an email to somebody.
    Using the "Send again" feature I sent it to a 2nd person.
    Then I did the same thing to a 3rd person, and noticed the 2nd email wasn't in the Sent box.
    Then I did the same thing to a 4th person, and noticed the 3rd email wasn't in the Sent box, but the 2nd mail appeared.
    So the Sent box is currently showing 3 emails sent - apparently always not showing the next-to-last one sent.
    This is Gmail, and I confirmed directly at Gmail that all 4 emails are in the Sent box. So the mails were all sent, and it appears to be an Apple Mail oddity where some mails are just not appearing up in Sent.
    Anybody else seeing this?
    I am using OS X 10.10.3.
    Thanks,
    doug

    As a followup, in Mail on my iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 8.3 I do see all 4 sent mails. It's just in Apple Mail where I don't.

  • Apple Hardware Test- oddity

    Tonight I ran the Apple Hardware Test on my new iMac. System profiler correctly shows 256mb of video ram.... AHT shows only 128mb.
    I'm not concerned, but just curious if this happens on all upgraded vram 20 inchers...

    Just spoke with applecare and was told that engineering is still investigating this problem - the VRAM discrepency between apple hardware test and system profiler. The applecare rep did say that the system does have 256MB but could not yet confirm the problem was with AHT.

  • Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter Questions

    I'm in the processing of producing an instructional video using an Intel Core Duo iMac and iMovie. This content will be distributed primarily via broadcast over cable TV. Considering this, I'd like to be able to edit and view my dv footage on a TV monitor as I work.
    I was told by the Apple Store person that the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/6314001/wo/jY18n ncCp3Nx2tYjws52iCaPkH1/1.0.21.1.0.8.25.7.11.2.3) will enable me to
    1. Mirror my desktop to simultaneously show me what my iMovie edits will look like on a TV; and
    2. Enable me to edit in iMovie using the TV as my desktop.
    Am I understanding the capabilities of the Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter correctly?
    Regarding Cables
    1. I currently use an RCA composite cable to view dv footage from my camcorder directly on the TV. Is this the same cable I'd attach to the Mini-DVI to Video Adapter?
    2. The DVD recorder/player my TV signal is routed through has an s-video port. Is there a benefit to using an s-video connection in addition to/or instead of the RCA connections?
    Thanks for helping me understand this setup scenario!

    Ditto to Karsten's post:
    "Mirroring" a Mac's output to a TV, or plugging in an adaptor to provide a display on a Mac's screen and simultaneously on a TV ruins the Mac's display while this is happening by lowering its resolution. Ugghhh! (..I've tried this several times, in order to get a 'TV' signal out, showing the Mac's desktop, but it's hopeless..)
    Karsten's method is the best - output to camcorder via the normal FireWire cable, and plug a TV or monitor into the camcorder's A/V Out socket!
    [..Note, though, that Matti has pointed out that - what was it..? - during editing, some updating of the TV-thro-camcorder display doesn't work correctly. I can't remember exactly what the problem was, and I don't see it mentioned on Matti's Bugs Page, but there was some slight oddity. Nevertheless, this is still the best way of viewing on a TV or monitor..]

  • Apple Tv Overall

    hi, i would like to talk about the apple tv with people.  i am thinking of getting it for christmas for my family.  i am hoping anyone can explain to me if what i want to do is capable to any degree.  what i want to do is as follows:
    it will be in my tv room next to the flatscreen tv that has hdmi.  it is my understanding that the box is wireless/wired, depends on preference.  it will have to be wireless because even though the router is in the next room, i dont have a long enough ethernet cord.  the device will be used by 4 people in all.  i am hoping that you can sighn in w/ multiple accounts not necisarily all at once.
    i also have questions which are as follows:
    1) does the computer have to be on to do anything w/ the tv?
    2) if you dont sync w/ the cloud, if you sighn in on the device( assuming it works that way), what will appear, if anything?
    3) do you need the cloud for this to work?
    i may have more questions but thats all i can think of right now.

    Yes you can use wifi or ethernet.  Clearly wifi is prone to signal issues etc in some setups.  If you have that problem consider mains powerline adapters (eg Devolo, Belkin, Netgear).
    iCloud is confusing people.  You don't need it.
    You do not need to be signed up for iCloud to use things like Movies/TV Shows in the cloud if those features are available in your country - they are tied to your iTunes ID which can be separate to iCloud.
    The only iCloud feature it currently has is Photostream for iPhone/iPad photos.
    Computer always on?
    Not for most things - if you want to stream content across the local network from itunes on the computer (either iTunes Store purchases or compatible music/video eg CD rips, home movies converted to correct format) the computer needs to be on with iTunes running.
    If you have iTunes 'in the cloud' for movies/TV Shows in your country you can stream prior purchases direct from the internet if they are still in the store or rent/buy new content direct on AppleTV with the computer off.
    Music is an oddity you can't browse/buy it and for internet playback have to subscribe to itunes match.
    Content on AppleTVs?
    With Computer on you can access your local itunes library under the Computers icon.
    These are available in US with computer on or off:
    http://www.apple.com/appletv/whats-on/
    Note - subscriptions will be required for several of these services (you may already have them).
    Multiple users?
    AppleTV really assumes a single iTunes account and can't be configured with different logins.
    It uses Home Sharing to link to itunes.
    To Home Share with a different account you'd need to alter settings which can be a chore with the small remote.  Do you all have different iTunes accounts?

  • 1st Generation Apple TV No Longer Appears as Device

    Since the latest iTunes update, my Apple TV no longer appears as a device in iTunes on my Mac Pro even though it does on my MacBook despite both are completely up to date and are running on the same network (AirPort Extreme Dual Band) with EXACTLY the same network and firewall settings.
    I have wiped and reinstalled the Apple TV SW and iTunes on the Mac to no avail. Since the Mac I use to host my Apple TV content is on my Mac Pro this is a problem.

    I'm in the same boat.  My Mac Pro iTunes does not show my AppleTV (1st Gen) in the devices, nor is there an AppleTV icon in the Preferences anymore.  Here's the wierd thing... My MacBook Pro, on the same network, and same iTunes version, shows the AppleTV in Preferences.  But not in devices because it is "tied" to my Mac Pro's iTunes.
    Curious oddity....

  • Which event dispatched after text selection done on spark text area in Apple iPad using Adobe Flex 4

    I need to know which event triggered after text selection done in Apple iPad. This way i have done in desktop air app code (mouse events)
    protected function txtEditor_mouseUpHandler(event:MouseEvent):void
                if(txtEditor.selectionAnchorPosition != txtEditor.selectionActivePosition){
                    showNoteToolBar(event);
                    txtEditor.focusEnabled = true;
                    txtEditor.setFocus();
    But in Apple iPad how to achieve through "Touch Event" ? And also i need how to hide all context menu on Spaek TextArea?. Why Touch.End event is not fired after place cursor on text area ?
    Please help me !

    Ok, so I finally got it working but this is not ideal at all. Adobe really needs to give us some direction on how to properly deal with font embedding and TLF now that the release build breaks all functionality with loading runtime fonts and TLF.
    Problem:
    I am embedding collections of fonts (faces) into single family classes. Each individual face is registered with Font.registerFont(). I need to do this because I have to have mixed fonts within text flows - at least according to Alex H's recent blog post.
    Fonts do not display in TLF without doing the following:
    1. GlobalSettings.resolveFontLookupFunction = null;
    2. editor.textFlow.flowComposer.swfContext = ISWFContext(this.getFontContext("AnyFamilyNameFromAnyFontEmbedded", false, false, FontLookup.EMBEDDED_CFF));
    3. Instead of #2, use editor.textFlow.invalidateAllFormats();
    Either #2 or #3 need to be performed. If I have a spark richEditableText control in MXML with defined familes from the loaded fonts. I even tried placing the control into a separate state so it wasn't created until after the fonts were loaded... I still needed to invalidate the formats or set the context.
    The "AnyFamilyNameFromAnyFontEmbedded" does not need to be all of the embedded family names. It only needs to be one of them. Once one is used, all embedded fonts work. Also, I have to use the internal namespace to even get access to getFontContext, another oddity that, in my humble opinion, should never be necessary to create mixed style TLF content.
    My questions are then:
    1. Why am I required to use ISWFContext if I am using Font.registerFont()?
    2. Why is GlobalSettings.resolveFontLookupFunction = null; also required for this to work?
    3. What is the recommended workflow to embed fonts from multiple SWF files into the release build and have it work without having to jump through all these hoops?

  • Sending Password-Protected PDF in Apple Mail

    I am trying to send such to a client but the attachment seems to refuse to appear in the email. Non-protected pdf's do not display this symptom.
    How can I do this?

    By "appear in the email" you mean "look like a picture"? This is just an oddity of Apple Mail; almost every other email program doesn't show PDF files, and you can't control whether Apple Mail will do so...

  • Wirelessly streaming to Apple TV

    Hi all, first time on this forum so I'll make this question brief!
    I want to steam content to my Apple TV, obviously this can be handled by my MacBook using iTunes however this seems like a clumsy way of achieving this task as it required my Macbook to be on at all times. Is there anyway of using an Airport Extreme Router to wirelessly stream my content 24-7, or would I have to buy a Mac Mini and use it as a server?

    I have a similar question, regarding streaming. My iTunes library is on my desktop, which is always connected to my network. In order to not have to sync the library to my Apple TV and stream to it instead does the network have to be particularly fast? I have both a g & n networks (one is Airport the other is Time Capsule). My reason for asking stems from changing the Apple TV iTunes library a few times (from network problems - had to re-establish the library connection) and iTunes wants to re-sync all the content back to the Apple TV. Which is a VERY time consuming ordeal. If I understand streaming I should tell iTunes not to sync with the Apple TV, correct? Then I can view content from the connected iTunes Library, correct?
    One other oddity, the long syncs (I tried doing them at night when the network was not busy) results in my desktop HD having minus marks by the Applications (and I believe Library) folders - which is a permissions issue I believe. What could be happening during the sync to cause that? A reboot fixes that minus thing, but what causes it?
    I have wanted to stream for a long time since the Apple TVs HD is limited and with HD content coming more common it will fill up fast.
    Any suggestions, pointers to pages with help, would be greatly appreciated.

  • Netflix issue ONLY on Apple TVs

    Here's the scenario:
    I have 3 Apple TVs around my house. 2 are wired ethernet, 1 is WiFi connected. All are version 3 Apple TVs. Each and every one of these devices has an issue STARTING any stream of content from Netflix. The devices have no problem getting to Netflix to load the selection grids, the informational pages, etc. Only when I try to start a program/movie is there an issue. There will be a loading duration of between 45 seconds and 1 minute on EVERY program loaded from EVERY Apple TV in my house. Once getting past this long loading phase, the content streams in its highest quality flawlessly. If this is a series, the next episode load will take a very long time to load as well, although it is shorter than the initial load.
    To validate, I have attempted to load Netflix content from laptops, both wired and WiFi, a Mac Mini, wired, and multiple tablet and phone devices. The ONLY devices showing this behavior are the Apple TVs. ALL OTHER devices load the content and stream perfectly fine, with the content starting to stream within 5 - 10 seconds.
    I have written a couple of scripts to test network speed across my ISP at intervals throughout the day where heavy bandwidth congestion levels would be at their highest. This has yielded nothing interesting. My network access is rock solid to multiple data centers around the US with bandwidth averaging around 60Mb/10Mb.
    There is nothing sub par in my home network. There are no consumer grade devices anywhere other than the cable modem, but if this were the problem, I would be seeing the same issues on every device, not just the Apple TVs. WiFi is canvassing my entire property via Ubiquiti APs. The entire WiFi network has been designed using the same Tamosoft Site Survey software that I use to layout all of my corporate locations. My core switch tying everything together is an Adtran 1544. All cabling is pretty much all hand built CAT6/5e.
    I run a pretty large corporate network in my day job, so I'd like to think that I somewhat know what I'm doing with designing networks, measuring their performance, and troubleshooting congestion and other issues. These little black boxes are exactly that however; black boxes that should just work, which they do, for everything other than starting a Netflix stream efficiently.
    This has all seemed to start happening within the past couple of months. Anyone else seeing this oddity with their Apple TVs and Netflix?

    Thank god I'm not the only one!!
    I've had this issue for a few months now. EVERYTHING works on the Apple TV BUT Netflix.  Now its taking forever to even load the Netflix app on the ATV3.  It says Accessing Netflix for a good 45-60 seconds when you select the icon. Once you get a show going it streams just fine in full HD so its clearly not a signal issue.  Switching from one episode to the next takes forever as well.  I also have a PS4, iPad, Mac Mini and 2 iPhones on the same network and Netflix streams flawless.  Hulu, iTunes and everything else on the ATV3 work perfectly.  I don't get it.
    I have completely reset everything....ATV3 and router to no avail.
    I called Apple Support a couple months ago and the dude told me it was Netflix servers fault.  He said they use different servers for different devices.  So basically he thought the Netflix servers that feed ATV devices were screwing up.  Pretty sure he had no idea what he was talking about and just wanted to shift blame.
    I personally feel like its the Netflix app within the ATV its self.  I don't think it really has anything to do with the network or signal at all.  I guess i'm pretty well screwed because now its out of warranty.

  • Com.apple.mail.drag

    Hi all
    I've been encountering an oddity and just took the time to look a bit more closely.
    When an attachment is dragged from the body of a Mail message to the desktop. Then the user quits mail and logs out (multiple users environment) there is created a Rescued Items folder in the trash that contains a directory com.apple.mail.drag with the attachment inside.
    Can anyone clarify what's going on here and how to prevent it ?
    OS is 10.4.8 Powermac G5
    Kind Regards Eric

    Hi Allan
    Ta. I'll follow up the article. Only other problem is similar but not the same. It occurs with word files which are problematic because they will not delete from the trash. This has only started recently and I thought it was confined to the two intel imacs we bought but has extended to others. It seems related to word art that people have taken to using and I'm upgrading all the machines to Office 2004 so I'm hoping that one will just go away.
    Kind Regards

  • FireWire oddity.

    I am running OS X 10.4.11 on a dual 1.25GHz MDD G4 (not the FW800 model) and have observed two (possibly related) problems recently.
    The first is that when I first boot up the Mac on any given day, after about ten minutes it becomes unresponsive and I have to force a restart. After restarting, everything is fine until the Mac is turned off and not used for quite a while, such as the next day. It could be a hardware issue, such as a hairline fracture in a circuit board or a failing component, as it seems to re-occur once the computer has had time to cool down completely.
    The second is that I seem to have a software-related reason for attached FireWire devices not mounting and not being recognized for all users, including root, when booted from my normal startup disk. The disks and FireWire leads are known to be working, so the fault is not there. Booting from another disk with a fresh installation of 10.4.11 (ie all available updates, etc. were done in the one installation session rather than piecemeal over many months with lots of varied usage in between), FireWire works perfectly. Also, if I start up from my normal startup disk in Safe Boot mode, FireWire works perfectly.
    It seems that something in software has become corrupted or altered over the course of time and prevents FireWire from working. Whatever it is does not load when starting in Safe Boot mode. Even though the best course of action is to do a complete re-install of everything (because I have been given hints of other software occasionally not wanting to behave properly), if there is a quick easy fix by deleting a corrupted preferences file, for example, then I am willing to listen to any suggestions as to what might be causing this oddity of behavior.

  • Sleep from Apple menu

    When I've finished working with my iMac G5 for the evening, I will click on "Sleep" from the Apple menu, and invariably the computer will indeed go into Sleep mode. However, on rare occasions, the computer will wake up not long afterwards -- I'll hear a slight "bump" through my external speakers, and then the computer will come back on. This is not an especially critical problem, since putting the computer back to sleep is merely a matter of reselecting "Sleep" from the Apple menu. However, I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this "wake up and go to sleep" oddity?

    This is a bit odd. You should create another user account, and see if the same happens on the new account.
    Also, are you on the Intel iMac, or the iMac G5? Your audio "popping" symptoms through the external speakers scream Intel iMac.
