Apple TV on an open WiFi

Apologies if this is a dumb question - I'm currently stopping in a hotel and will be here until January. I've recently purchased Apple TV (3rd generation) and want to set it up, but I'm concerned that if I connect it to the hotel WiFi, other people might be able to see it, connect to it and access stuff through my iTunes account. Will this be possible, or can I protect it in some way so that only devices I approve can connect to Apple TV?
Thanks

They could only connect to it from home sharing via the remote app and AirPlay. They shouldn't know your home sharing details and you can password protect AirPlay.
I think your biggest problem will be whether the hotel allows the type of communication over it's network and whether there is enough bandwidth for the Apple TV.

  • IPod touch won't connect to an open WiFi Network

I am trying to help my cousin with a issue on his brand new iPod touch 32 GB. He was having issues with 3.0 and is now having the same issues with 4.0. The issue is that when you go to the network settings to connect to a open network it will show the correct network and let you seem like it is connecting, but the WiFi symbol will not show up in the top right of the iPod. If you go back to the WiFi setting the name of the network will change at random to strange names, for example the name of the network is Netgear and it will change to Nutgear and a bunch of other strange names. It has also done this with open WiFi networks at Starbucks, B&N etc. My iPhone works perfectly on the same networks. I have tried everything listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1398 Any ideas?

Welcome to Apple Discussions. In the future, you might want to post questions like you have as a new post as we like discussions to stay on topic where possible. However, having said all of that, I'm happy to try and help you fix your problem.
WiFi problems are not the easiest to fix as there is usually a lot of information missing in user questions - like router make/model, encryption used, whether or not you have chosen to hide your network name, etc. So, instead of a specific answer, I'm going to give you the general instructions that fix most WiFi problems.
    1. Reboot your router (just unplug the power cord)
    2. Reset the touch network settings - tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings
    3. When the touch restarts, tap Settings > WiFi > Other and re-enter your network name, security, and network password.
If you continue to have problems, you can find more tips here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
If you need to repost, please start a new discussion and I would go further an suggest you do it in the iPod touch > Using iPod touch group where it will get more visibility.

  • MacBook refuses to connect to Open Wifi at University

I think I have a really bizarre problem.
Normally, wireless performance with my black MacBook has been great. I can connect to my home WiFi point (with WEP), and other open wifi points (i.e. libraries, coffee houses, even Apple Stores.) But an issue occurs when I try to connect to my university's wifi network. It is fully open, with no encryption, so I don't think that is the problem.
What happens is this: The MacBook gets the IP address from the network, gets the subnet mask, but absolutely refuses to get the IP address from the router; it constantly times out. At first I thought it was just a Mac thing (we are primarily a windows based school, at least in the labs) But I see other MacBook and MacBook Pro users connecting to the network no problems. I asked the IT department and they are just as confused as me.
I reinstalled OS X, thinking that it was some issue with the old data that I transferred over from my powerbook, but it still performs the same way.
...In fact, I was never able to get my 12" powerbook to connect either.
Does anyone have any idea what the heck is going on?
    Regards,
    Anthony

This may be better answered in a Windows compatibility forum.  I've requested it be moved there.

  • MBP not finding open wifi networks, but iPhone is?

Hello, I'm a newbie to the forums and I am quite frustrated at a recent set of events. I currently live in Seoul Korea and decided to walk around the other day to find open usable wifi hotspots at coffee shops so I could study. Unfortunately it seems that while my iPhone can "find" and successfully connect get online with dozens of open wifi networks, my MBP only seems to find 1 out of 5 on average. As I sit here, I have full signal strength on my iPhone wifi (cellular does not work in S. Korea) and cannot find, nor connect manually to any one of a dozen networks that all work with my iPhone. I was wondering if anyone can assist me with this? Is it a software setting issue? or simply a matter of weak hardware on part of the MBP?
I also tried searching with XP using bootcamp and parallels with no avail. I'm restarted, erased the preferred networks, erased network keychains, and tried manually entering the router info found on my iPhone. No luck.
    Thank you.

It may be simply that the iPhone you have is able to see the networks more easily owing to the nature of the antenna. That in the MBP is shielded a bit by the aluminium casing. I have an iPod touch and that does also see more networks than my MBP, although 1 in 5 seems a little sparse.
On the other hand, there have been situations where the antenna has been found not to be connected internally. If you can check with an Apple agent, that might help here.

  • Wifi button is disabled, I cannot open wifi

    Hi,
    Can anyone help??
My iPhone 4S (IOS 7.0.4) cannot use wifi anymore. The wifi button is disabled, is been greyed out so I cannot open wifi.
I reset network data, but nothing, is it hardware fault?
    Thanks!

If these don't work you may have a hardware problem. Visit an Apple store for an evaluation or contact Apple Support.

  • How to change apple id on iPhone. Wife and I have same apple ID.  Get each others iMessages. want to put her on another cloud with different id.

How to change apple id on iPhone? Wife and I have same apple ID which causes me to get her iMessages instead of her. I also get all her pics on my phone and I don't want them.  We need to change her apple ID without causing my ID and cloud to be closed.

Have her create a new ID.   Here:  https://appleid.apple.com/
Have her log out of iMessage/Facetime/iCloud on her device.   Now have her use the new ID she has created.
That should keep the 2 of you separated, except for iTunes purchases.   You can share that ID in a family up to 5 devices.

I didn't make a rescue e-mail and now i forgot the answers of my security questions!!' And the apple support contact wont open???

I'm not sure what you mean by the 'apple support contact wont open' (?). If you mean the 'contact iTunes Store support' link on the page that you posted from I've just tried it and it seems to wok ok for me, though I haven't gone as far as to actually contact them.
You can contact either iTunes Support or Apple to get the questions reset.
e.g. you can try contacting iTunes Support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page, then Account Management , and then 'Forgotten Apple ID security questions'
or try ringing Apple in your country and ask to talk to the Accounts Security Team : http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
When they've been reset you can then use the steps on the page that you posted from to add a rescue email address for potential future use, or if it's available in your country you could change to 2-step verification : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5570

"The file 'iTunes Library.itl' cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." Updates were only offered by Apple when I'd open iTunes. Now I can't open iTunes. How can I access the newest iTunes as an update, not a new program?

this just started w/ me yesterday.  I was running 10.5.3, and nothing changed - the message just appeard out of nowhere.  I update to the latest iTunes 10.6 but the message is the same.
Sounds like probably some sort of Library file corruption.
The two options available in the message box are "Download" and "Quit".  Download is useless because I'm already running the latest.  Quit is pretty useless.
I was going to just create a new Library and re-import all my music.  Of course, all my iPhone sync settings are going go have to be recreated.

  • Lost iPod Touch: Will it auto-connect to open wifi?

My daughter received a brand new iPod Touch for Christmas. Not a week later and she lost it at a friend's house.
Fortunately, I had set it up to work with my iCloud subscription and enabled the "Track My iPhone" feature. But of course it is not connected to my daughter's friend's WiFi.
So I was thinking that I could ask that they temporarily open up their wifi network (i.e., not require a password) in hopes that the iPod Touch will automatically scan and connect to the open access point. If it does, then I should be able to both locate it on a map and also trigger it to play a high-volume sound, all through iCloud.
    Question is:
Assuming the iPod Touch's battery is not already drained....does the iPod Touch automatically/consistently scan for open wifi networks and, if it senses one, does it automatically connect? Or is it like a laptop, where you have to manually connect?
Thanks in advance for any help with this!

It depends upon what setting you have on the iPod. The following os from the User Guide (sorry about the formatting):
Set iPod touch to ask if you want
    to join a new network
Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and turn “Ask to Join Networks” on or off.
If “Ask to Join Networks” is turned off, you must manually join a network to
connect to the Internet when a previously used network isn’t available.

  • When I connect my apple tv to my access point upstair and connect my ipad to the same access point i cant see my apple tv when i open up the airplay menu on my ipad. but i can see the apple tv in the living room downstair which connect to the main router

when I connect my apple tv to my access point upstair and connect my ipad to the same access point i cant see my apple tv when i open up the airplay menu on my ipad. but i can see the apple tv in the living room downstair which connect to the main router.
Below is some info i get about ports.
I tried to set DMZ on my main router to have full access to ported to access point upstair which is in the ip of 192.168.1.2 and the main router in the living room is the gateway router with the 192.168.1.1 ip.
I still cant see apple tv after i try the DMZ method.
    any suggestion ?
These network ports are used by Apple TV for communications on your network.
TCP port 123 is used to communicate with a network time server.
TCP port 3689 is used to communicate with iTunes while using the iTunes Library Sharing feature.
UDP port 5353 is used by Apple TV for automatically finding computers with iTunes on your network using Bonjour.
TCP port 80 is used for communicating with podcast servers.
TCP port 80 and 443 are used for basic and secure communications with the iTunes Store via the Internet.
TCP port 53 is used for regular DNS.
These are well-known ports used by Apple products, like iTunes. If you can use all the features of iTunes, these ports are likely already open on your firewall or NAT router. Note: These ports may also used by other services such as YouTube and Flickr.

When the Apple TV is paired with a remote, it means only that remote can control it, when it's not paired any remote can control it. You will need a remote for each of your devices.
