  • Apple TV requires regular regular complete sync.  Why?

I'm having trouble understanding the syncing. I have been fine for about 4 months but recently the syncing has started to play up. Often after full re-start my iTunes/Apple TV sync breaks down. iTunes appears to see the Apple TV but tries to re-sync it all, with the image of the Apple TV disc showing it empty. BUT this can't be the case, cos when I check the Apple TV menus the content seems to be there. Today I had to re-connect to iTunes from ATV, and after a few mins of ATV saying there was no content, the content re-appeared. But iTunes still wants to sync. I wouldn't mind if it was a few mins, but the sync takes many many hours.
    Any ideas?

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
with the image of the Apple TV disc showing it empty
I assume you mean the graphic of space used at the bottom of itunes.
BUT this can't be the case, cos when I check the Apple TV menus the content seems to be there.
The list of content under the device list also lists streamed content, so you cannot assume what you see here is synced to the tv HDD.
and after a few mins of ATV saying there was no content, the content re-appeared.
That's symptomatic of streaming not syncing. See This. How much do you see on the tv when itunes is not running.

  • I have V3.6.8. On My XP Desktop and my Apple, Firefox crashes regularly - at least 3 times a week it will restart but some files will not re-open automatically, or have to be taken of the list of possible reasons why FF will not restart.

I get a script box saying that a script is trying to complete etc as follows: Script: file:///C:/Program%20Files/Mozilla%20Firefox/components/nsExtensionManager.js:623
It makes no difference whether I click continue or cancel the same message keeps reappearing
How do I fix this? And why does FF crash all the time, both of my different computers? Its supposed to better that IE . . . ?

Go to the address '''about:crashes''' and tell us your latest crash IDs. We can then look at the data specific to your crash and have a better idea of what is causing the problem.

  • Apple ID - Two Factor Authentication (and why I stopped using it)

The Apple devices I use every day consist of the following:
    2009 MacBook Pro 17" (home)
    iPhone 6 (home)
    2012 MacBook Pro Retina (work)
My home devices are all logged in using my Apple ID as usual, and my work laptop uses a Apple ID specific to work, but with my personal Apple ID logged in for iMessage and FaceTime (pretty standard, I presume, for people with full-time work laptops they can bring home, etc.). Now, since I have multiple devices which are constantly syncing everything back and forth, whether it be something as simple as my contacts or as delicate and near and dear to my heart as my photo collection, I felt that maybe I should use two factor authentication for my home Apple ID, just to be on the safe side. I recognize that the two factor authentication only protects iMessage and FaceTime currently, but I implemented it with hopes that someday they will incorporate everything about iCloud and other services synced between Apple devices that you would assume should be covered by a two factor authentication update/overhaul.
I liked this idea very much, as I use two factor for almost everything I can, but things started to fall apart one day when I had to switch to a temporary work laptop and decided to log in to iMessage with a new app specific password, as you would need to on a new device (unless you wrote down the original iMessage password, which is a terrible thing to do). When I went to create my new iMessage password for work laptop B, I decided to revoke work laptop A's iMessage password while it went in for repairs. This wasn't so bad until something seemed funny about my phone, as it was asking for me to log into iMessage again. Now, I had created a separate password for work laptop A's iMessage when I first logged in a while back, as well as a separate password for the temporary work laptop B so it didn't interfere with my other generated passwords. Apparently this didn't matter.
I continued and created a new app password for my phone, but when I got home, wouldn't you know it, I had to log into iMessage on my home laptop again as well. I had to create a new password for that, which seemed to work for a while, but then I was prompted to enter my iMessage password on my phone again once I revoked my home laptop's iMessage password. Not following? No, me either. It seemed to me that creating separate app specific passwords for me to use across my devices didn't stay as separate as I thought they should, but instead they somehow seemed to be dependent on one another. Since I had a frustrating time trying to activate iMessage again on my iPhone and laptops on multiple occasions while this was happening, I decided to disable two factor authentication altogether.
I suppose I should ask a question here, so here goes: has anyone else encountered this horrific two factor authentication/app specific password management issue for their own account? Have you been able to resolve it, and if so, any helpful suggestions? Thanks!

I had also thought that initially, but after turning it on, I went to sign into iMessage with my Apple ID and regular Apple ID password, but it prompted me to create an app specific password to sign in since I had two factor authentication on, as it wouldn't let me use my regular Apple ID password to log in (which I could use to log in for everything else but iMessage and FaceTime). It was nice since I was prompted to provide a code sent to an Apple device of my choosing when signing into the Apple ID management site or iCloud.com, but forcing me to create app specific passwords for iMessage and FaceTime is kind of ridiculous and frustrating. Maybe there's a way to have two factor authentication without the need for app specific passwords? Or if not, then perhaps that would be a great option to present users when turning that feature on.

  • Is Apple Just Messing With Us or What??! (Can't change AppleID!)

This is seriously messed up! Not only can I not change the AppleID on an iPod Touch... I cannot even log in... never mind that, I cannot even VIEW messages on this forum any longer!! Not through my Firefox browser, anyway - viewing an old message from this forum in Google takes me to the create account page! There's not even an option to login if you already have an account! Its only possible to access this forum in Safar, even after I changed my UserAgent in FF to Safari/Mac! This is messed up! Anyway... the main problem:
    1. I just want to change the AppleID on an iPod Touch (IOS 8.3). This is not an "insanely great" experience.... it's an "insanely bad" one! First off, every IOS8 guide on the net I've been able to find on the subject does not work! They talk about a DELETE button that does not exist! Ok... so its "sign out". Well there is no "sign out" only "sign in". But fine, i created an iCloud account. Except I can't access this account via iCloud on my web browser, says "ICloud Encountered An Error While Trying To Connect To Server". ...Rubbish! It simply won't log me in no matter what! Not even on Safari browser! (I know it's not an Apple-side server problem when another AppleID logs me into iCloud without issue!).
    2. There are now TWO places to sign in on the iPod, "iCloud" and "iTunes" -- I tried signing in the new iCloud account in both menus, no go! (In the iTunes menu, it keeps showing the OLD AppleID email address!). The error I get is "Your AppleID Must Be A Full Email Address To Sign Up". ....Rubbish! It's a HOTMAIL email address, how much "fuller" can it get? This insane error points me to the AppleID website to fix the problem, but does not say how the heck you are supposed to fix it once in the site! Well, all I know then is I click "Manage AppleID" button, there is my Hotmail email address, all verified and green check-marked.
Yet the iPod won't accept the account!
I"m more of an Apple expert than anyone I know... are they serious??! Apple really expect regular customers to go through this and understand why its not working? I can't even come close to sorting out this problem!
Does anyone out there know how I can change the AppleID on an IOS 8.3 iPod Touch?? Please help save a brand new iPod Touch from being maliciously smashed with a brick in an irrational last straw effort at revenge!

    Hi,
There is no network problem - this is not a network problem thing. The problem accessing this forum may be restricted to Firefox... but it is still a very weird problem, the likes of which I have never seen. I don't know what is causing this behaviour, but I don't see how Firefox alone would cause the site to redirect to the create account page. Thus I was convinced Apple Discussions was restricting people from viewing solutions and participating here, if they did not use Safari!
Now as for the problem with the iPod... There were no restrictions set. It turns out, the reason I could not log in to the account via the iPod nor via iCloud (on the web), had to do with the account itself! Despite having changed the password to this account, despite the AppleID site telling me the email was verified and green-checked, the Apple ecosystem choked itself on this account! it was a Kafka-esque nightmare trying to use this account; whereby the AppleID site would tell it me it could not find the account (when I entered the name, etc), and then when I tried to create a new account using the information I entered to find the unfindable account, the site would tell me I could not do that because that account was already registered!!
If I did not know any better, I'd have to assume the entire AppleID system was programmed by grade school kids on their lunch break.
The solution to this hours-long nightmare came from simply creating  a new account with a new email address. Suddenly, the iPod and everything accepted that information!
With Apple making their customers jump through hoops of fire like this, I'm now starting to understand why so many people are opting for Android devices!

  • Is there any kind of Apple event coming?

I know of the WWDC that happens in June but does apple have another event, where they could possibly announce the iPhone 5, that they do every year like the WWDC?

Apple has no regularly scheduled events other than the WWDC. All other events are scheduled on an as-needed basis. Apple has not announced any other events as of this time.
    Regards.

  • IPad randomly launches requests for Apple Store login information

A few weeks ago my iPad started to ask for my Apple login information regularly, launching the login box for no apparent reason.  I try to watch a youtube, and the login comes up.  I start my browser, and the login comes up.  Any thoughts out there on what happened and how to stop this?
    Thanks.

Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. When the screen goes blank power On again in the normal way.] It is absolutely/appsolutely safe!

  • HT1551 How long should it take to download a movie on Apple TV?

I'm trying to download a movie using Apple TV.  Screem says Ready to play in 10 hours 58 minutes. However, the time changes to various different times such as 15 hours then 9 hour then 20 hours.
Am I using up my minutes as it is loading?  Should it take this long to load?

    Hi anobles,
Download times for purchases & rentals from the iTunes Store will vary depending on the speed of your internet connection. The Apple TV will regularly recalculate your estimated time to download based on the current download speed that it is seeing. You may find the following article useful:
iTunes Store: Download times will vary

  • Change Payment from Apple

I need to switch from Apple payment to regular (through Spotify directly) for Premium. I've cancelled my Apple subscription (because it's such a ripoff, charging $3 extra). Under my "Subscription and payment" page it says "Once your subscription has come to an end, you can then re-subscribe to Spotify here." But when I click, it says, "Unfortunately, there is no support at the moment to make this type of change to your subscription. Contact our customer service team who can help you further." But of course, there's no customer service contact info or page on how to setup a new payment method. Spotify: I want to give you my money. Please help me setup a new payment method.

Hey there , welcome to the community!
Sounds like you need to wait until your account reverts back to 'Spotify Free' to subscribe through their website. Once that happens, you should be free to subscribe and not receive any errors. :)

  • Apple:please update itunes with ability to disable music store permenanty

Although I believe you when you say you are not storing data on your users, I still would feel more comfortable not having the music store open unless I open it. I should not be connected to you everytime I open itunes , please include the option to disable this default. I should never be connected to the internet just because I want to listen to my own music.

My issue isn't so much with Apple seeing what songs I'm playing, and it's cool that you can just turn the feature off. After all, I'm a loyal Apple customer who regularly buys songs from iTMS and even computers and stuff from Apple Store (I own 3 Macs, 1 Airport Express, and 1 iPod).
My concern is this third-party involvement:
    http://since1968.com/article/155/omniture-itunes
I don't like Apple sending any info of mine to a 3rd party for some nefariously furtive reason, regardless of how well it's legally bulwarked in their EULA.

just check apple's website regularly. they post updates on the site about upcoming releases. what you know is as good as what i know... only steve jobs knows what's really going to happen or coming out.

  • Apple key + ESC when typing

    Hi All,
Something a chap in Tunisia told me about that I did not know.
Type part of a word in a text chat.
Then use the Apple Key + ESC at the same time.
This then lists words that start with those letters.
Different to Apple + ; or Apple + Shift + ; (to get Apple + gto get regular spelling window up.
I would guess this is a keystroke that I have not come across elsewhere.

  • White Macbook (Early 2009) Why mini-DVI to S-video adapter no longer works?

I am a lifelong Mac user and by now think I pretty well know the ins and outs of Macs and most Mac-related issues... but this one has stumped me.
The new white Macbook was upgraded to include many of the components of its big brother unibody Aluminum Macbooks (including 1066 MHz frontside bus and the NVIDIA 9400M) just over a week ago. I was lucky enough to be in the market for a new laptop about this time and snatched one up a few days ago (retiring my awesome 12" Aluminum PowerBook G4 which is still kicking).
One of the main reasons I upgraded was to be able to use Silverlight 2.0 (d--- Microsoft) as I can't watch streaming lectures from school without it. A nice bonus would be the ability to stream Netflix videos to my TV through my laptop which I've wanted to do for a while. Anyone who has bought one of these new Macbooks and uses their laptop with their TV as much as I do has probably read one of these two links:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3413
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9319G/A?mco=MzE2OTkzMA
Note the asterisk at the Apple store: "* This adapter is not compatible with the 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo white MacBook introduced in January 2009."
Can someone tell me why this is? I've been using the s-video out of my Apple laptops for the past 6 years... why change it now? Is this a temporary problem or permanent change?
I have been fervently searching for a work-around but no blogs, forums, or boards have given me any answers. One tech blogger at http://createdigitalmotion.com/2009/01/22/white-macbook-snubs-adapter-i-want-my- tv-out/ speculates that Apple is cracking down on DRM video being watched on TV's... but that makes no sense, any new TV can use the DVI output still supported by this computer.
Dear Apple: PLEASE give me my TV back!!! I want to watch Netflix and use that cool Front Row feature you put in your system!

Thank you for your helpful and detailed response, Ziatron. I am aware Apple is unlikely to peruse my forum post, I was just crying out in anguish at the gods that be, so to speak.
Everything you wrote is consistent with what I have read in other places, thanks for consolidating it here. I am not as proficient in display technologies as I am in other areas so let me see If I am understanding you correctly. Apple has licensed HDCP technology and is employing it across its desktop and laptop lineups. The new white MacBook was the last of the MacBook lineup to be upgraded to include this new technology and as it still retains the older Mini-DVI out rather than the new Mini-Displayport Apple had to "flip the switch" and turn off the MacBook's ability to put out video through the old adapter. I notice that there is no Mini-Displayport to video adapter available in their store. Am I good so far?
So I am left to assume that they turned off the capability of outputing to s-video because that output cannot be managed by the new HDCP technology, correct? If so, I suppose I understand but am still frustrated as it seems they are prevent the growth of a few weeds (illegal content) by burning the whole lawn (preventing many such as me from using the output I love). Thanks for your help again.

These would fill my log right before my computer would restart.
I cannot seem to find the file anywhere, but then again I don't know exactly what I am looking for.
    Please help.

First, uninstall "SuperTV" (whatever that is) according to the developer's instructions. It isn't working and it's filling the log with noise.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
PLEASE DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
