Apple tv or smart tv

I need to get a new TV soon and I'm wondering if I should get a smart TV or a normal TV and buy an apple TV for it. I do have an iPhone because i heard an apple TV is better with another apple device or something like that.

Thats what i was thinking, with apple TV atleast it will be updated for a few years but i doubt a smart TV would ever be updated.

  • Best way to use Apple TV/iPad/Smart board

Not sure I can explain this well as when it comes to wi-fi or home sharing, I'm completely lost.  But here is what I am doing now and what I need to improve.
I have a smart board at school - no HDMI.  So, I connect my Apple TV (3rd gen) to VGA adaptor and the digital sound to a adaptor box for analog sound.
Presently I send, wirelessly, videos or music from my ipad or iphone to the Apple TV from itunes using mirroring.  Sorta works, but I often have hesitations.  Strangely, this seems to happen more with music than videos!
The wi-fi is part of the school network, but the router is in another room and has to pass through two concrete brick walls to get to me.  Maybe that's the problem, or maybe it is something else, but I'd like to find a solution.
I assume there is no way to connect to the Apple TV without some sort of wifi setup so, I considered creating my own network (which I know nothing about).  While it would be nice to have internet access, I can get by without it.
I just bought a new Time Capsule so my old one is available.  I will soon be buying a new Apple computer so, if needed, my late 2008 Macbook will be available.
I updated to Mavericks and see there is an Apple Server app for $20 in the store.  That's not a problem if that is the only software I need, assuming the MB is needed at all.
I figure with everything in the same room, my own intranet would solve my problem.  As long as I can send stuff from the ipad/iphone to the Apple TV wirelessly, that is fine.  If I can ALSO sometimes access the internet, that's better but not necessary.  Sending stuff to the Apple TV from the MB would be another plus, but it would be nice if I didn't have to use the MB at all unless I found that convenient.  If I do use the MB, then it would be a plus to be able to access the time capsule HD - not for backup, but for normal storage.
Hope I explained that well enough, since all this is "magic" to me!
Maybe we can start with what I need (computer? Apple's server software?) and move into the details of how to set it all up.
Or maybe home sharing will do the job without needing some things?

Would a cable like this work?

Or do I need to buy the actuall converter box first? Also, does anyone have any personal experience with having to use a setup like this with an Apple TV?

  • High Internal Temp 500.28GB Apple SSD on SMART (194) Test

I would greatly welcome advice regarding a high internal temperature reading on a SMART (194) test. I have a new MacBook Pro with an Apple SSD TS512C. SMART (194) is showing an internal temp just a tad short of fail. I am using TechTool Pro 6 as a diagnostic utility. I have not had an SSD before so do not know what the parameters should be. I emailed MicroMat the dev for TechTool who replied suggesting I ask Apple. I rang Apple Tech Support in Ireland and the adviser said she didn't know - suggested I ask MicroMat...! Is it a problem. There's no discernible heat from the machine and no sound of a fan hard at work. Be glad to hear from anyone who knows about these things. VMT

Same configuration here, except I have a new MacBook Pro Retina and the attribute 194 (internal temperature) via TechTool Pro 6.0.6 also shows arrow slightly toward the fail side of midpoint, color Yellow. I have never had it show any differently. I check iSight Pro (latest version) and the temperature for the core can range from 40-70 degrees C, but the TechTool Pro value never changes. I have ignored it since there is no accurate interpretation from any engineer.

  • Apple TV to smart TV connection

I've connected my LG wifi ready tv to my Apple TV via hdmi. ATV connects to Internet via wireless which is all I need really, so I'm bypassing all the smart tv features. However, There are couple of things that would be nice to access to on smart tv ((3d world), but my tv cannot connect to the Internet unless I get a dongle.
I know I could get a dlan plug and all that, but I'm wondering, can I connect the Tv to the ATV via Ethernet and somehow share the ATV connection so that also the tv can be connected too?
    Thanks!

no but if your tv have an ethernet port you can use an airport express or other hotspots to make it conenct to the same wifi network as the appletv connects to

  • Is Apple TV Bluetooth Smart compatible?

I am having a problem pairing newest Apple TV with any Bluetooth Smart keyboard.  If anyone manages to pair with BT Smart keyboard, may I have the model number of the keyboard?

I understand on keyboard support only.  Is your HP keyboard BT Low Energy or regular Bluetooth?  You can use the BTLE sniffer by LightBlue on iPhone to check.  So far I have no luck connecting BT Low Energy keyboard with Apple TV.  If anybody knows a keyboard using BTLE that works, please let me know.  I would like to get one.

  • Apple TV vs Smart TV

Before I buy a new television, I want to know fi Apple TV and a Smart TV  do the same thing.
If I  already have Apple TV, do I REALLY  need  a Smart TV?
What's the difference between these two?
    Thanks.

They do similar things, but the feature sets will vary - different TV manufacturers will offer different features on their SMART TVs, as will Apple and other vendors of streaming media boxes (eg Roku, Western Digital etc).
Most TVs seem to have Smart features built-in these days, so if you have an AppleTV perhaps look for one that has features that complement what AppleTV does - that said the Smart feature set would not be my main reason for choosing one TV over another.
It happends to all devices, but they lose support updates eventually - a colleague bought a pair of Sony SmartTVs 2-3 years ago - already some of the features no longer work due to changes to the streaming service and no update from Sony.  I've also seen/heard of BluRay players losing functionality when streaming services changed the way they provided their content.

  • Apple iPad 2 Smart Cover For iPad 1

    Helo folks
Since no difference between first and sec gen. Of pad's screen , length and width sizes, i want to get a ipad 2 smart cover for my original ipad 1 , possible ? .. It should
    ?

The display size and resolution are the same, the iPads themselves are not exactly the same dimension. Also, the new iPad has magnets inside of it help the smart cover attach itself to the new model.
You would be wasting your money, the Smart Cover is for the iPad 2 only.

  • Adding presumed APPLE loops to GB3/browser

    okay
    cut me a break here.
I just downloaded about 30 Apple loops by Smart media.
They are aiffs. Some have wavs.
what are the exact intelligent steps to take to get these inside GB3 so that they are indexed and ready to be called up by typing their name? This is not as easy as you think.
they are loops for electric guitar, bass and percussion.
I have the appropriate folder in my HD. But what must i do to get them properly as per protocol to land inside the browser and be usable. Thanks for the lesson.
( I loaded them in the folders. I then dragged them onto the browser and they just cant be found )

i work on a 2 computer set at home 1pc and 1 mac...on the pc i use acid and i have thousands of loops i love and i wanted to use on gb , so i put them on a disk and added them to my itunes folder so when i click on the eye icon on the lower right corner i can axcess these loops and add them to my songs..so i suggest mabe something like that

  • Apple's handling of antenna problems

I actually thought about not reading the news about the iPhone 4 because all the negativity about the antenna. Not to say all is negative. There are plenty of sites and reviews that explain all the wonderful features on the new iPhone. The FaceTime feature is one of my favorites. But with so many people (me included) seeing how holding your phone a certain way can drop your signal all the way down. Or even dropping calls if the phone is giving the "death grip" this seems to be a real problem. I believe Apple could have and should handle this situation better than it has. When I seen that Steve Jobs said to hold the phone different it did not seem right. Or told to buy a bumper to help with a problem the phone has and should not have. If a bumper helps then Apple should at least lower the cost of them. Some would say they should include them if they are needed. I know Apple has very smart people working on this but I don't know if this software update is going to help the people who's calls are dropping when their signal goes all the way down holding it the "wrong way".
It did not take long for the competition to use this against the iPhone. I was surprised that ads were already coming out though. First Nokia saying you can hold their phone anyway you want and now Droid. Apple has been a leader in many areas (ipod, iphone, ipad) but with the competition getting better and better Apple needs to do more to let their customers and future customers know that they are not just leaving us out to dry. More money needs to be spent addressing this issue in magazines and ads. It may even be better in the long run to at least subsidize the price of the bumper or give it to each iPhone 4 customer. Yes, it will cost them money but look at how Apple's reputation can be harmed (iPhone's antenna design being maybe flawed) and now multiple lawsuits.
As for me. I do not know what I'm going to do. This being my second iPhone 4 I know a third will not stop me from dropping calls when I hold my phone the "wrong way" without a case. Sometimes it drops calls with the case. It's not that it is always dropping calls but that my 3GS worked like a champ. So I am used to a great phone with great service.

I decided today what I'm going to do about my iPhone 4. I was not sure if I would return my 2nd iPhone 4 and go with a Droid phone. But after much thought I decided that I want to stick with the iPhone 4. My phone is not dropping calls which was my biggest concern. I hope other iPhone customers get relief if they need it. I love my iPhone's display resolution. Plus, as long as my iPhone 4 keeps working like it is I really want to get my wife a iPhone 4 so we can do FaceTime while apart. This is a new high tech device and I know there are some bugs that need to get worked out. But I am one of the many who are happy with my new phone. I would recommend that if you are not happy to return your phone though before the 30 days. I admit that I thought hard about it but this phone is one of the best their is.

  • Has anyone found a solution to the smart playlist problem.

    Hello,
After many calls to Apple regarding my smart playlists not syncing correctly I figured I'd try the forums. Since iTunes 9 (back in November) my playlists have not been syncing correctly, at all and it's not just a case of the songs being out of order, the entire playlist/s is incorrect, with songs I didn't even add to the list.
I only have 16gb to play with on my phone, my entire library is over 40gb, so I depend on smart playlists so that only selected songs (4 star rated or better) make it to my iPhone.
Other then unchecking live update, is there any other solutions that actually work? I'm way beyond frustrated with this issue and the fact that they STILL haven't fixed it.
    iTunes 9.0.3
    iPhone 3.1.3
Both were just updated this week, the iPhone this afternoon.
    Thank you for any help!
    Regards,
    Eric

Don't know if my problem is same as yours..after Lion install, frozen cursor in password field when logging in after starting up, beach ball. Couple of trips to Apple store, a number of phone calls to troubleshoot with Applecare. The last fellow who helped me found a workaround, just can't log in. He said engineers have reports of others with this problem so it's not just my machine but fix would probably come in software update. Been dealing with this since first week of Lion download. Hopefully they'll fix it eventually. I can use macbook now, but don't like not being able to have a screen login via password. No plans to ever again download a new op system on a mac...had no trouble installing win7 on older dell from vista.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Smart Album Scope

I have been using Aperture 1.5.1 and have noticed what I consider to be strange or, at least, non-intuitive behavior for smart albums. I'm wondering if others have had the same experience and if Apple considers this normal behavior.
First, some background. I have 6 projects in three different folders that are stored at the root level of the Aperture library. Outside of these folders I have other folders containing smart albums that are intended to search all the projects for the appropriate images. These folders are, again, at the root level of the Aperture library. The smart albums were originally created in Aperture 1.1 inside the folders in which they currently live.
Prior to my update to 1.5, this worked spectacularly. However, after my update to 1.5, I found that all my smart albums were empty. The Apple documentation for Aperture claims that the scope of smart album search is influenced by where the smart album resides. Smart albums, according to the documentation, only search projects that are 'downstream' from the smart album. My smart albums were, therefore, not searching any projects because they were created in a folder with no projects. This information can be found here.
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n302626
With this information, it made sense that my smart albums were empty. I'm not sure it was wise of Apple to change smart album behavior in this way between 1.1 and 1.5, but there you have it.
This was really disturbing because I like to keep my smart albums outside my folders with projects. Worse yet, it appeared as though I would have store all my smart albums at the root of my Aperture library to get them to search all my projects in the three different folders. That just felt ugly and very unaesthetically pleasing.
I found, however, that if I created a smart album at the root of the Aperture library and then moved that smart album to any other folder at any level relative to the projects, it retained its scope for searching realtive to where it was created.
In other words, it appears that the Apple documentation at http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n302626 needs to be changed to replaced every reference to where a smart album is placed to where a smart album is created. The scope of smart album searches appears to be dictated by where that album is created, not where it is stored.
So, my question to all of you is whether this is something the rest of you are observing? It seems strange to me, and I'm worried this is not what Apple intends and therefore represents a bug to them that they'll "fix" in the next release and thus destroy my smart albums again.
It seems to me it would make much more sense for Apple to remove this silly "scope of search based on location of album creation" behavior and just insert a line in the smart album setup that allows one to search particular projects or all projects. It seems that Apple has made an elegant search interface way to complex with the scoping issue.

what you experience is exactly how it works. there are other threads about the smart album "problem", with the same outcome.
the problem is not really, how smart albums are working. if a smart album is CREATED based on the entire library, it will therefore search the entire library, regardless where you move it afterwards. if you create a smartfolder within a project, it should be project-bound, regardless where you finally store it. that makes sense.
however, the problem is the changed behaviour between previous versions and 1.5.1. smart albums that were created "unlinked" (somewhere in your structure but not within a project or while the library was selected) worked fine before but show no results since 1.5.1.
if someone only has a few smart albums, then this is quickly solved, just re-create them in the right location and move them to wherever you want afterwards. if you have created over a hundred smart albums for subjects, ratings, clients, models, agencies etc etc already, you're in trouble. and this would be me as example.

  • Will Apple Software Update update a 64 bit version of iTunes

On 64 bit Windows 7, will Apple Software Update update a 64 bit installation of iTunes, Bonjour, and Apple Mobile Support to a new 64 bit version of the software when a new version comes out or will it try to install pure 32 bit versions of the software when I use Apple Software Update.
Basically, is Apple Software Update smart enough to realize that the version of Windows 7 I am using is 64 bit and that I used the 64 bit package to install iTunes, Bonjour, and Apple Mobile Support, etc originally. I know that the software is not entirely 64 bit, but I would like to keep the parts that are.
    Thanks.

The answer is "yes, ASU does download the 64-bit stuff on a 64-bit PC".
I uninstalled iTunes, BonJour and Apple Mobile Device Support (all of which have at least some 64-bit componentry) on the 64-bit Vista system. Did an "iTunes + QuickTime 9.0.3" install via ASU. The 64-bit pieces were all in place after the ASU update. (AMDS program files, iTunes miniplayer stuff, iPod Service Module, 64-bit BonJour namespace provider, and so forth.)

  • Apple TV & iPod Touch

    Hello All,
I am currently using an iPod Touch, and want to get an apple TV. I have 1 question before buying:
I LOVE to watch podcasts. I am wondering if will be able to SYNC both of my devices to iTunes.
For example. if I have 3 episodes of CommandN (using CommandN as the example), and, I have iTunes set to "Auto delete" watched episodes. If I watch 1 on my iPod Touch, and, iTunes deletes the 1 I just watched", will the Apple TV be confused (Using the word "Confused" for lack of a better word) and look for the 1 episode that was automatically deleted?
I want to be able to use both devices, and, still have iTunes delete watched podcasts without causing confusion between the Apple TV and the iPod Touch.
I Hope I am explaining this the right way.
Any help would be great !!
    Gary

yes. I think you understand what i mean (although, I have a hard time explaining things).
For example. i subscribe to CommandN video podcasts. I have iTunes set to Auto Delete podcasts I already watched. Lets pretend I have 3 episodes in itunes. I watch 1 of them on the iPod Touch at work.
So, when I plug the Touch back into my computer, it sees that I watched 1 of the episodes and deletes it (like it should because thats the way I have it setup).
Now, I sync the Apple TV. The last time the Apple TV SYNCed to my computer, it saw that 3 of the episode were there, but, now, it will only see 2. Will the APple TV be smart enough to realize that one of the 3 episodes were deleted because I already watched it on the Touch, or will it read some type of error because 1 is missing (for example - Can not sync "CommandN Eiposde 147 because the file no longer exists in iTunes. Error 185734..etc"
    I hope this is clearer
    Gary
