Apple TV Overall Opinion

I've had my Apple TV from the beginning release. With 6 months under my belt, I figured I'd give a performance report on it.
Honestly, I find myself not using it as much as the months go by. I did know the limitations when I bought it, except for the video shuffle, but, I figured it would be another cool Apple gadget.
Unfortunately, the only great thing about it is the Photo screen saver during music shuffle. I turned that on during parties and everyone loves it. Great sound, awesome picture detail. But, this I can get from hooking up my MacBook to the Plasma.
As for the video playback, some good, some not. I've used Handbrake for movies and Quicktime Pro for my videos. Must be the codec for the Apple TV.
However, the time, effort and experimenting can get cumbersome just to watch through the Apple TV.
It doesn't look good for an "awesome update" anytime soon. And really, it would need to be a really, really awesome update! So, cool idea, but a lot of effort. The ease of use of iTunes on this device would be great. I might take this off the main entertainment center and put it in the bedroom. I think I would have more use for it in the bedroom than in the main room.
Just my opinion, no harm, no foul.

I use it even more than I expected, and I expected to use it a lot when I got it.
Maybe it's because my HDTV only has component inputs and no HDMI/DVI, but for me the Apple TV is the best way to get quality video. Before getting it I was using a Mac mini with s-video. Okay, but not great. Now the Mac mini is my dedicated Apple TV server, and I use it with a Hybrid TV to record over-the-air HDTV. I then edit out the commercials and convert to Apple TV format, letting iTunes do all the rest. I get time-shifting and commercial-free TV which is so nice I don't even use my TiVo anymore. (And yes, I would happily buy the shows online without commercials if they were in HD format.)
I also subscribe to podcasts and watch them via the Apple TV. Once you start watching things on a 61" TV you stop even considering watching video on the computer display. With a dedicated server it's so easy to just let things run automatically and have the content on the Apple TV change as new stuff comes in.
The one thing missing that would make the Apple TV almost perfect for me is HD videos on iTunes. If and when that becomes available I will never buy another DVD. As it is I rarely watch them now because I have enough HD content to watch (I refuse to be a pawn in the Blu-ray/HD-DVD battle).
One other huge thing I've done with the Apple TV is use it for showing videos at events. It's like a portable theater projector. Just sync onto it what you want to show, disconnect and set up at the event. Completely bulletproof and instant access to all the videos. It is like the video version of an iPod, not meant to be in your pocket but portable enough to take to another location to watch videos.

  • Apple Tv Overall

hi, i would like to talk about the apple tv with people.  i am thinking of getting it for christmas for my family.  i am hoping anyone can explain to me if what i want to do is capable to any degree.  what i want to do is as follows:
it will be in my tv room next to the flatscreen tv that has hdmi.  it is my understanding that the box is wireless/wired, depends on preference.  it will have to be wireless because even though the router is in the next room, i dont have a long enough ethernet cord.  the device will be used by 4 people in all.  i am hoping that you can sighn in w/ multiple accounts not necisarily all at once.
i also have questions which are as follows:
    1) does the computer have to be on to do anything w/ the tv?
    2) if you dont sync w/ the cloud, if you sighn in on the device( assuming it works that way), what will appear, if anything?
    3) do you need the cloud for this to work?
i may have more questions but thats all i can think of right now.

Yes you can use wifi or ethernet.  Clearly wifi is prone to signal issues etc in some setups.  If you have that problem consider mains powerline adapters (eg Devolo, Belkin, Netgear).
iCloud is confusing people.  You don't need it.
You do not need to be signed up for iCloud to use things like Movies/TV Shows in the cloud if those features are available in your country - they are tied to your iTunes ID which can be separate to iCloud.
The only iCloud feature it currently has is Photostream for iPhone/iPad photos.
    Computer always on?
Not for most things - if you want to stream content across the local network from itunes on the computer (either iTunes Store purchases or compatible music/video eg CD rips, home movies converted to correct format) the computer needs to be on with iTunes running.
If you have iTunes 'in the cloud' for movies/TV Shows in your country you can stream prior purchases direct from the internet if they are still in the store or rent/buy new content direct on AppleTV with the computer off.
Music is an oddity you can't browse/buy it and for internet playback have to subscribe to itunes match.
    Content on AppleTVs?
With Computer on you can access your local itunes library under the Computers icon.
These are available in US with computer on or off:
    http://www.apple.com/appletv/whats-on/
Note - subscriptions will be required for several of these services (you may already have them).
    Multiple users?
AppleTV really assumes a single iTunes account and can't be configured with different logins.
It uses Home Sharing to link to itunes.
To Home Share with a different account you'd need to alter settings which can be a chore with the small remote.  Do you all have different iTunes accounts?

  • Apple TV Overall Satisfaction?

I'm thinking about buying Apple TV, but after seeing all of the problems posted on this board, I'm having second thoughts. Do you guys think its worth the money? Has anyone compared it to Playstation 3 or know if PS3 is even compatible with mac?
I've been researching both and it seems like PS3 is quite a bit more bang for the buck, but haven't yet been able to confirm how compatible it is with Macs as far as iTunes and iPhoto goes. Any thoughts?

We got rid of our cable TV subscription about a year ago, and went solely with appletv. We no longer have any active tv subscriptions, and only rent or purchase stuff through appletv or netflix. For the amount of tv we watch, this ended up being about 30-40% cheaper over the year than paying the regular cable bill monthly (around $110 a month if I recall correctly with all the HD options ect).
The downside of this is if you are a sports fan, or like live shows, then you are out of luck with ATV.
We've been very happy with our ATV, regularly use it for renting, purchasing tv shows. We tend to watch our HD-content on our PS3, and never use the PS3 for renting or buying video content (strictly a blu-ray player).
Syncing has been pretty pain free, with the odd glitch (purchases not synced between the ATV and computer for example). Most problems are resolved by rebooting the ATV. I would say we have had perhaps 5 or 6 significant issues which were annoying in the year we have had it. These issues (mostly syncing) were all resolved in 30 min or less through reading on the net, implementing the recommended solution, or just rebooting the ATV.
Finally, blu-ray on the PS3 is noticeably better than the HD content available through itunes. Its not orders of magnitude, but noticeable. If you hunt around on the internet, you can find pictures of the same image in the different formats, but to really get an idea, you need to see them side by side, as so much of the quality is reflected in fluidity of motion etc.
We have rented some HD content through itunes when we couldnt be bothered waiting for the blu-ray title on netflix, but in general, we watch HD content via PS3.

  • What is Apple's position on Anti-virus software for the mac?

I have started replacing my customers PCs with iMac's and Mac-Mini, and I have always operated on the assumption that anti-virus software is not necessary, but I fear that my opinion might need revisiting.  So I would pose the question again, does the community and/or Apple have an opinion on the need for Anti-Virus, Malware and all the other nasty inflictions.  If you, as a group or individually do recommend, what product would you recommend?  Thank You --- Bill Shaw - Kansas City, Mo.

This comment applies to malicious software ("malware") that's installed unwittingly by the victim of a network attack. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an attacker who has hands-on access to the victim's computer. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it. If you have reason to suspect that you're the target of such an attack, you need expert help.
All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files. The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders. In most cases, there’s no benefit from any other automated protection against malware. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there is another layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications that are downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Applications certified in this way haven't actually been tested by Apple (unless they come from the Mac App Store), but you can be sure that they haven't been modified by anyone other than the developer, and his identity is known, so he could be held responsible if he knowingly released malware. For most practical purposes, applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed can be considered safe. Note, however, that there are some caveats concerning Gatekeeper:
It doesn't apply to software that comes packaged as an installer. Treat all third-party installers with caution.
It can be disabled or overridden by the user.
It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets (see below.)
It only applies to applications downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
For more information about Gatekeeper, see this Apple Support article. Notwithstanding the above, the most effective defense against malware attacks is your own intelligence. All known malware on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. If you're smarter than the malware attacker thinks you are, you won't be duped. That means, primarily, that you never install software from an untrustworthy source. How do you know a source is untrustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim. [Some reputable websites did legitimately warn users who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.]
“Cracked” copies of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. No intermediary is acceptable.
Java on the network (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related) is always a potential weak spot in the security of any operating system. If a Java web plugin is not installed, don't install it unless you really need it. If it is installed, you should disable it (not JavaScript) in your web browsers. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This setting is mandatory in OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, because Java in those obsolete versions has known security flaws that make it unsafe to use on the Internet. The flaws will never be fixed. Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java can never be fully trusted, even if no vulnerabilities are publicly known at the moment.
Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can reasonably be.
Never install any commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software ClamXav — nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial "anti-virus" products?
Their design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the filesystem. Malware gets into the system by being downloaded, not by materializing from nowhere.
In order to meet that nonexistent threat, the software duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability and poor performance.
By modifying the system at a low level, the software itself may create vulnerabilities that could be exploited by malware attackers.
    ClamXav doesn't have these drawbacks.

  • Apple IDs and icloud

Hi I have now updated all apple gadgets to allow icoud etc. I am one of the unlucky ones who has an Apple ID as I have a dot.me account and a separate Apple ID for Itunes... ( I know its my fault as i was one of the bad people who apple products before they became so popular!)
My problem, my iphone4 has now the dot.me apple ID overall and the itunes apple id for store... all OK it seems... however my ipad has the dot.me ID for its main ID, yet when I try and put the itunes apple ID into my IPad, it tells me this ID isnt an Apple ID and needs verification... I have used this ID for years on itunes , and its the ID I am using here!!!
    Any help please?
PS .A little tip apple, before launching these things allow us early adopters to merge Apple IDs!

Apple does not allow merging of accounts >  Frequently Asked Questions About Apple ID
I have an apple ID that I have used for years for my itunes. Then I got a me.com account, with another Apple ID.

  • The reason for Apple's silence on the whine issue (my theory)

As you get older , your ability to hear high pitched noises diminishes. This is a well documented fact, and if you don't believe me go here:
    http://www.diyhappy.com/bug-some-of-them-darn-teenagers-or-create-an-adult-proof -ringtone/
listen to the sound and read the comments. (Note: The macbook pro speakers don't seem to be able to reproduce the high frequencies, but I can hear the noise with my desk speakers). YMMV.
Some stores in Europe play this sound over speakers to keep the kids away. It's so annoying it feels like your brain is being fried. However, old people don't even notice and go about their shopping as if nothing was happening.
Although the pitch is slightly higher in the recording mentioned above, perhaps the apple engineers are simply old and can't hear the noise. I know I can hear it - it drives me absolutely nuts. I have to run that "quiet macbookpro" program to get rid of it, eating into my CPU cycles and battery life. This is **** poor service from Apple in my opinion.
The worst thing about it is that this all seems to point to an issue that can be fixed via software. It's a simple matter of tuning the throttling software a bit to fix the noise. It boggles my mind why apple wouldn't simply release a patch to fix this once and for all.
Anyway, what do you guys think of my theory? The Mac bar "geniuses" might all have poor hearing too.

Interesting theory, but it has flaws.
First off, the Genius Bar employees are frequently not much older than high school graduates where I live. If you want to ensure they can hear it, ask them to find a quiet room in the store. Mind you, the problem of asking the Genius Bar employees to hear a high pitched sound after working in such loud music, is they are already probably partially deaf from being exposed to the loud music in the store, and will be for some time until they are out of the exposure of that loud music. The store I go to is never quiet, but who knows if they have a sound proof room in back. Ambient noises can obscure sounds like those too. I would call AppleCare and ask to have the machine mailed to their service center with specific instructions to take the machine into a sound proof room by someone whose hearing has not been compromised. Perhaps even include a printed page of the website and tape it to the MacBook or MacBook Pros when you send it in.

  • Word Processing on the iPad Retina Display

    Hi There,
I've been browsing the forums for a while and have seen various threads about the WP possibilities with iPad.  I've looked at ipages and iworks, and also a couple of others which are paid apps and claim to do mostly the same things (I really only want basic word processing which I can then save and email).
Many of the apps I've tried out are SO slow to load that it's really not worth the hassle.  In particular, those which rely on iCloud, Google Drive, DropBox or Sky Drive.   On the other hand, a few of the free apps seem to have no possibility to save anywhere which is daft.  Some autosave, but woe betide you if you log off before it's done that.
I used Polaris with my Samsung Note to very good effect, it allows export in both word or PDF (or other) formats and also allows direct export from the app if you want to do that.  It's pretty basic but sufficed for my needs however there doesn't appear to be a version for the iPad sadly.
If you were about to buy an app PURELY for word processing, and required something which allowed you to email from the app, to convert to pdf (I have a pdf converting app) AND allowed you either to store the doc on the iPad (is this even possible?  I'm guessing it is as the Note allows for this and has the same memory size) or uses iCloud or Google Docs - don't really mind which.
I can't seem to find any overall opinion on which is best.  Many seem to say iPages but I'm unsure how malleable it is and I don't have an Apple computer, only a PC so I need it to be fully compatible.
Thanks for any advice, help or experience anyone feels like sharing.

Yes, I was wondering about using the Notes app too.   Hmm,  I've just been looking at some of the links on another similar question and the real problem is, the reviews are terrible for many of the Office Pro type apps.  They cost around the same as Pages and claim to do all kinds of things but Documents to Go and Doc to Go Premium are simply slated in the review sections.
Thanks very much.  I shall probably try Pages first.

  • Iphone 4s after market charger cables

Are after market iPhone 4s charger cables safe to use with Apple chargers

    Hi Again,
Gosh you are quick with responses.
The item I am looking at is by a provider who sells both Samsung and Iphone bits.
As the company is local to Australia I reckon they probably import bits from all over depending on price.
There is a substantial difference as the Apple item is about $20 AUS and the imported bit is only $5 AUS.
Reading the Community posts, the overall opinion seems to be to stay away from non Apple items.

  • Is it possible to change iWork files on your iMac without having to upload the modified version to iCloud and downloading it again for the next use ?

Recently I am getting more and more familiar with Numbers, Pages, KeyNote and I have to acknowledge they look smart in many aspects compared to Office for Mac programs ( ..only a bit of time to learn some minor things..). But what really surprises me is that while shifting from MobileMe to ICloud, Apple is not providing a real , full-service, cloud-computing platform for those who , like me, makes use of it mostly for work or business purposes.. I mean, you can do whatever from your Ipad or Iphone ( besides clearly ignoring the necessity one may build up folders with any kind of file in it, not just one categoory..) and every file you manage from these mobile devices, get saved and stored in the new modified version.. But try doing the same form your Imac or McBook Air and you wil have to download from Icloud your file, work on it and having to re-upload onto Icloud back again ==> syncing is not authomatic as it used to be by Idisk in MobileMe  !!.. A real nightmare for those who work with Apple, in my opinion.
One last thing.. I am having trouble at dragging and dropping PDF files onto Icloud, doesn't accept its format.. Although PDF files are mentioned as acceptable at Pages , for example...
I can't see the reasons for all this.. At first I thought this was all being done in order to move more and more users from Windows office to IWork programs, if it were for this, I'd be keen on changing, also because I love Iworks programs.. But I found out it's not !.. Unless people at Apple think that all business driven users of former MobileMe should quit their Imac and start working 8-10 hrs a day with the Ipad   :-) !!
No fear, I know there are plenty of cloud-computing services doing the same as IDisk, but I can't understand why Apple has given so little attention to such needs, that , I guess, are probably the same by many other Mac users..
Thankful for any help-support-opinion on this,
    Maurizio

    m,
You can submit Feedback to Apple from the Numbers menu. That's the official channel for comments about the app and suggestions for improvement. The Apple officials don't visit these discussions except to maintain the decorum.

  • Icloud 2.0 control panel doesn't sync photos to Idevices

I have a computer ruinning windows 7 64, I have Icloud 2.0 innstalled, and I have an Iphone 3gs and an Ipad 3 with sim all hooked up to the same apple id.
I have set up Icloud on all devices. Photos taken with iphone or ipad syncs perfectly to all units. But photos added to the standard upload folder (created by Icloud 2.0 control panel) within the picture stream folder on my computer won't sync. When I add a photo here it shows in "my photostream folder" on my computer, shortly after, but not on my iphone or ipad. (And yes, both I units are hooked up to wifi)
I have been messing with this issue for 3 days. And I am getting increasingly fed up. I have reinstalled the control panel for the computer several times, booted several times. Turned I cloud on and off on all devices, reset the photostream on www.icloud.com several timens, no change.
Tried to contact apple support, but they want to charge me 300NOK(50USD) for calling me. I didn't go through with that obviously.
If this isn't fixed I am seriously considering returning the new iphone 5 and the accessories I ordered last week.
(I do know I can use dropbox(which actually work) or sync the pics through itunes, but one of the main advantages with Apple in my opinion was the Icloud feature. Things from Apple used to work at once, but now, not so sure anymore.
    Help is greatly appriciated.

So.. I tried again and did the following:
    1. Signed out of ICloud control panel 2.0
    2. Uninnstalled Icloud control panel 2.0 through programs and functions in Windows control panel.
    3. Deleted folders that Icloud automaticly made for picturestream (my picturestream, shared and upload)
    4. signed in to www.icloud.com and reset picturestream.
    5. Booted the computer
    6. booted Iphone 3gs and Ipad 3, turned picturestream off and on on both devices.
    7. innstalled Icloud control panel 2.0 from Apple software update on computer.
    8. configured Icloud control panel 2.0 on computer, enabled photostream. And sat photostream folder to a designated folder on my desktop.
    9. Crossed fingers and toes
    10. Moved 77 pics into upload folder within the designated folder on my desktop.
    Result:
    1. The pics seemed to upload to Icloud at once, as they downloaded to the "my photo stream" folder within the designated folder on my desktop, They also showed in a new root folder when I open my computer folder called Photostream. All pics are there.
    2. checked my ipad and iphone -> no pictures in my photostream on either device, even though both are connected to wifi, and both have more than 20% battery power, and none of them have camera app open.
    3. Teared of grey hair as they popped out.
    4. Considering android platforms instead, and to sell my iphone 3gs,ipad 3, apple airport express, and apple tv, and to return my ordered iphone 5. And to stop recommending apple products for work, friends an family.
    5. Irritated.

  • IPod Shuffle 2nd generation HELP NEEDED !!!

I have an iPod shuffle 2nd generation, the years suppoort is up and apple have done their best to drop me when all I really need is some technical know how not a huge overhaul of my iPod shuffle! And so here I am my last resort to try and sort this very frustrating issue out.
Basically I loaded my suffle with songs and gave it to my girlfriend as a gift. We plugged it into the car  (via usb) worked fine also the HD ready TV via the usb docking bay it comes with no problem!!! Sounds lovely so far, but alas the gadget was loved but not the music.
So we plugged it into my girlfriends laptop, loaded with music in iTunes (latest version). Synced it with this pc and reloaded the music from her laptop. Sounds easy so far but from then on it wont play in the car via usb or the TV!!!! This is so annoying and frustrating so typical of apple in my opinion! I have reset and restored the device umpteen times via iTunes even downloaded the restore software and ran it as an XP proggy as apple hasnt updated it to later versions of windows and still it wont work. The car says its an empty USB yet it plays fine in the car via the 3.5 jack but of coarse we loose all the functionality of the built in car audio control on the wheel etc! And using the device by taking eyes of the road could be disatrous for the misses! The TV shows iTunes folder, Music folder even 3 extra folders F0,0 F01 and F02 but all are empty according to it! But in iTunes obviously the shuffle is full and loaded and it plays fine via the jack plug!
And so can anyone help shed light why it worked fine through the USB bay supplied with the iPod in the car and the TV until we reassociated with another PC with latest version of iTunes installed. Can this be fixed! Or is it yet another Apple annomoly never to be fixed and brushed under the carpet of rotten cores!
We both run latest version of windows 7 ultimate with latest version download from apple of iTunes.
    Sincerely!
    Bhu

  • IWeb '09 can't import earlier files?  Unbelievable.

Just installed iWeb '09 on both my main Macs and found out that I can't import the websites I created in an earlier version of the application. Really a stupid decision on the part of Apple, in my opinion. The idea that I'll love '09 so much (before I've even used it) that I'll redesign dozens of meticulously created and tweezed pages just to get the privilege of using it is a bit, uh, presumptuous. (Again-in my opinion, of course. No flames, please).
Has anyone yet created a shareware or commercial application that will do what '09 should already do: import existing webpages created in iWeb?
Suggestions are welcome (other than "just bite the bullet and rebuild the sites"). Thanks!

Well actually, yes, iWeb 09 can open sites created in both 06 and 08.
Transfer the domain files from both these sites to your computers - you will find the domain.sites files located under User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain.sites. iWeb 09 will be able to open these files.
You always need to ensure that you are using the correct files - in this case the domain files that you need to make any alteration to any iWeb site.
If you are talking about already published sites that consist of html files, then you are correct that iWeb cannot import these and you will have to re-build, but this is why the domain files exist instead.
You do need to ensure that you backup the correct files -DOMAIN FILES.

  • T5120 cable management arm and exhaust air flow obstruction

    Hello Folks
Concerning Sun servers of 1-U in height... There is debate as to whether the effectiveness of heat transfer out of the chassis is actually impaired by the use of a cable management arm at the rear of a rack mounted server.
From my experience I see this as more of an issue with I-U servers rather than those of 2-U or higher, where enough of the air exhaust flows over the cable management arm.
We have a fair variety of server models, including a T5220 and 14 T5120's. We have used the supplied cable management arm on the T5220 and two T5120's. I notice that the surface temperature of the cable management arm on the T5120's that faces the exhaust is quite hot to the touch, (I'm guessing over 60 C). The metal of the cable management arm conducts the heat and the insulation of the cables does not seem to be effected. However the heat content in the exhaust seems high enough to keep the surface temperature of the cable management arm fairly hot, and much of that heat does not dissipate well into the frame of the rack as there is a mix of materials, metal with insulators like plastic, paint, and air.
Although this type of cable management arm is supplied with the T5120, I am thinking that its use for these 1-U models of servers may be detrimental. The cable management arm was installed in accordance to the instructions in the “Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120 and T5220 Servers Installation Guide”, doc 820-2178-12 July 2009, Revision A.
The "Sun SPARC Enterprise T5120 and T5220 Servers Site Planning Guide", doc 820-2177-12 July 2009, Revision A, states “Allow a minimum of 5 mm (0.2 in) clearance at the front of the system and 80 mm (3.1 in) at the rear of the server when mounted.” However the installed cable management arm reduces the rear clearance by about one half.
The focus is to remove heat from the server, whether that is achieved via conduction or convection. Conduction does not seem too effective in this case. Convection of exhaust air flow is obstructed. The Site Planning Guide also does state “Manage cables to minimize interfering with the server exhaust vent.”, which may lead one to deduce not to use the cable management arm at all and route the cables straight out.
What do you folks out there prefer? Why would Sun even supply these cable management arms with these 1-U servers?
    Cheers, Roger

Good one, John! Been waiting for your impressions for a while now...
We seem to share the overall opinion about the 180; it's ok, but could definately be improved upon!
My major concern right now is NOISE. Tried the Zalman Fan Mate to quiet the intake fan for the HS, but that seems to affect the CPU-fan as PC Alert reports it as running at 0 rpm from time to time, even though I'm sure it doesn't. And a few days ago the intake fan got a lot noisier than it was from the start, so it's probably giving up the ghost already
Currently awaiting a Papst 60x60x15 to replace it with, hopefully that'll fix the noise problem too!
Noticed your recommendations as to placing quiet fans on the inside of the chassis, and although that is a nice idea it could be difficult on the Mega considering the side panels and top panel are one piece of metal. Could actually be difficult to put the cover back on! If you try something in the way of replacing the HS and/or fans you're more than welcome to share your experiences in this forum!
The few of us who are still clinging to our Mega 180's will need all the help we can give each other, since official support from MSI seems to be held at a minimum...
    Cheers!

  • Do I Really Need A New Hard Drive?

According to the mac genius I took my Powerbook G4 to, my hard drive is toast and I need to replace it. He then said that one reason might be that a spec of dust might have caused it to fail. My understanding is that that is an impossibility because the hard drives are hermetically sealed which leads me to believe he's not such a genius. Is there any way of finding out if a hard drive actually needs to be replaced or not without relying on an apple store "genius'" opinion.
I have called apple support several times and I can't seem to get definitive answers to my questions. The one thing I really want to know is if I really have to purchase applications like itunes, iphoto, idvd, imovie and garage band which I'm pretty sure came with my computer when I bought it. Does anybody know the answer to this?
    Thanks

    Snotsucker:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The Apple Genius said it was because my G4 was not designed to recognize a HD large then 80 Gig.
I can't believe the Apple Genius told you that. There are some computers, mostly pre 2002, in which the BootRom will see only 128 GB. The first PowerBook G4 that was released with an 80 GB HDD was the FW 800 which was released in September 2003. It will easily support the 250 GB HDD. To test this, with you computer turned on, go to Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info > Hardware > ATA. In the right pane lower section you will see into about your HDD. Look for Capacity. That tells you how much the System sees of your HDD. If it is one of the earlier computers it will see only 128 GB. If it sees more than 128 GB, it should see the entire HDD.
You don't need to erase and partition your HDD. If the Apple Genius told you what you said he did, he is wrong.
The reason for the slowness of your HDD can be many. I would begin with Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
Please post back with exactly which PB G4 you have. Also tell us what OS you have installed. In addition to running slower, was there anything else you noticed?
