Apple Tv Overall

hi, i would like to talk about the apple tv with people.  i am thinking of getting it for christmas for my family.  i am hoping anyone can explain to me if what i want to do is capable to any degree.  what i want to do is as follows:
it will be in my tv room next to the flatscreen tv that has hdmi.  it is my understanding that the box is wireless/wired, depends on preference.  it will have to be wireless because even though the router is in the next room, i dont have a long enough ethernet cord.  the device will be used by 4 people in all.  i am hoping that you can sighn in w/ multiple accounts not necisarily all at once.
i also have questions which are as follows:
1) does the computer have to be on to do anything w/ the tv?
2) if you dont sync w/ the cloud, if you sighn in on the device( assuming it works that way), what will appear, if anything?
3) do you need the cloud for this to work?
i may have more questions but thats all i can think of right now.

Yes you can use wifi or ethernet.  Clearly wifi is prone to signal issues etc in some setups.  If you have that problem consider mains powerline adapters (eg Devolo, Belkin, Netgear).
iCloud is confusing people.  You don't need it.
You do not need to be signed up for iCloud to use things like Movies/TV Shows in the cloud if those features are available in your country - they are tied to your iTunes ID which can be separate to iCloud.
The only iCloud feature it currently has is Photostream for iPhone/iPad photos.
Computer always on?
Not for most things - if you want to stream content across the local network from itunes on the computer (either iTunes Store purchases or compatible music/video eg CD rips, home movies converted to correct format) the computer needs to be on with iTunes running.
If you have iTunes 'in the cloud' for movies/TV Shows in your country you can stream prior purchases direct from the internet if they are still in the store or rent/buy new content direct on AppleTV with the computer off.
Music is an oddity you can't browse/buy it and for internet playback have to subscribe to itunes match.
Content on AppleTVs?
With Computer on you can access your local itunes library under the Computers icon.
These are available in US with computer on or off:
http://www.apple.com/appletv/whats-on/
Note - subscriptions will be required for several of these services (you may already have them).
Multiple users?
AppleTV really assumes a single iTunes account and can't be configured with different logins.
It uses Home Sharing to link to itunes.
To Home Share with a different account you'd need to alter settings which can be a chore with the small remote.  Do you all have different iTunes accounts?

  • Apple TV Overall Opinion

I've had my Apple TV from the beginning release. With 6 months under my belt, I figured I'd give a performance report on it.
Honestly, I find myself not using it as much as the months go by. I did know the limitations when I bought it, except for the video shuffle, but, I figured it would be another cool Apple gadget.
Unfortunately, the only great thing about it is the Photo screen saver during music shuffle. I turned that on during parties and everyone loves it. Great sound, awesome picture detail. But, this I can get from hooking up my MacBook to the Plasma.
As for the video playback, some good, some not. I've used Handbrake for movies and Quicktime Pro for my videos. Must be the codec for the Apple TV.
However, the time, effort and experimenting can get cumbersome just to watch through the Apple TV.
It doesn't look good for an "awesome update" anytime soon. And really, it would need to be a really, really awesome update! So, cool idea, but a lot of effort. The ease of use of iTunes on this device would be great. I might take this off the main entertainment center and put it in the bedroom. I think I would have more use for it in the bedroom than in the main room.
Just my opinion, no harm, no foul.

I use it even more than I expected, and I expected to use it a lot when I got it.
Maybe it's because my HDTV only has component inputs and no HDMI/DVI, but for me the Apple TV is the best way to get quality video. Before getting it I was using a Mac mini with s-video. Okay, but not great. Now the Mac mini is my dedicated Apple TV server, and I use it with a Hybrid TV to record over-the-air HDTV. I then edit out the commercials and convert to Apple TV format, letting iTunes do all the rest. I get time-shifting and commercial-free TV which is so nice I don't even use my TiVo anymore. (And yes, I would happily buy the shows online without commercials if they were in HD format.)
I also subscribe to podcasts and watch them via the Apple TV. Once you start watching things on a 61" TV you stop even considering watching video on the computer display. With a dedicated server it's so easy to just let things run automatically and have the content on the Apple TV change as new stuff comes in.
The one thing missing that would make the Apple TV almost perfect for me is HD videos on iTunes. If and when that becomes available I will never buy another DVD. As it is I rarely watch them now because I have enough HD content to watch (I refuse to be a pawn in the Blu-ray/HD-DVD battle).
One other huge thing I've done with the Apple TV is use it for showing videos at events. It's like a portable theater projector. Just sync onto it what you want to show, disconnect and set up at the event. Completely bulletproof and instant access to all the videos. It is like the video version of an iPod, not meant to be in your pocket but portable enough to take to another location to watch videos.

  • Apple TV Overall Satisfaction?

I'm thinking about buying Apple TV, but after seeing all of the problems posted on this board, I'm having second thoughts. Do you guys think its worth the money? Has anyone compared it to Playstation 3 or know if PS3 is even compatible with mac?
I've been researching both and it seems like PS3 is quite a bit more bang for the buck, but haven't yet been able to confirm how compatible it is with Macs as far as iTunes and iPhoto goes. Any thoughts?

We got rid of our cable TV subscription about a year ago, and went solely with appletv. We no longer have any active tv subscriptions, and only rent or purchase stuff through appletv or netflix. For the amount of tv we watch, this ended up being about 30-40% cheaper over the year than paying the regular cable bill monthly (around $110 a month if I recall correctly with all the HD options ect).
The downside of this is if you are a sports fan, or like live shows, then you are out of luck with ATV.
We've been very happy with our ATV, regularly use it for renting, purchasing tv shows. We tend to watch our HD-content on our PS3, and never use the PS3 for renting or buying video content (strictly a blu-ray player).
Syncing has been pretty pain free, with the odd glitch (purchases not synced between the ATV and computer for example). Most problems are resolved by rebooting the ATV. I would say we have had perhaps 5 or 6 significant issues which were annoying in the year we have had it. These issues (mostly syncing) were all resolved in 30 min or less through reading on the net, implementing the recommended solution, or just rebooting the ATV.
Finally, blu-ray on the PS3 is noticeably better than the HD content available through itunes. Its not orders of magnitude, but noticeable. If you hunt around on the internet, you can find pictures of the same image in the different formats, but to really get an idea, you need to see them side by side, as so much of the quality is reflected in fluidity of motion etc.
We have rented some HD content through itunes when we couldnt be bothered waiting for the blu-ray title on netflix, but in general, we watch HD content via PS3.

  • Apple IDs and icloud

Hi I have now updated all apple gadgets to allow icoud etc. I am one of the unlucky ones who has an Apple ID as I have a dot.me account and a separate Apple ID for Itunes... ( I know its my fault as i was one of the bad people who apple products before they became so popular!)
My problem, my iphone4 has now the dot.me apple ID overall and the itunes apple id for store... all OK it seems... however my ipad has the dot.me ID for its main ID, yet when I try and put the itunes apple ID into my IPad, it tells me this ID isnt an Apple ID and needs verification... I have used this ID for years on itunes , and its the ID I am using here!!!
    Any help please?
PS .A little tip apple, before launching these things allow us early adopters to merge Apple IDs!

Apple does not allow merging of accounts >  Frequently Asked Questions About Apple ID
I have an apple ID that I have used for years for my itunes. Then I got a me.com account, with another Apple ID.
Regarding two different accounts read here >  Creating an iCloud account: Frequently Asked Questions

  • Testimony of a Switcher

I bought a new Dell Studio XPS 435. It arrived yesterday. I'm very disappointed and am seriously considering switching back to my less-beefy iMac 24" (early 2008 model) for all my gaming and home computing needs.
I grew up on PCs. I've now worked in IT for over ten years, and simply put, I love working with machines, be it Windows, Mac, or Linux (I'm OS-agnostic).
About two years ago, I was working in a Microsoft shop and had finally had enough to where I went 100% Macs at home. That's right--I dumped my Dell XPS Gen 5 for a new iMac and Mac Book Pro. While some things took some time to get used to (mouse acceleration curve differences being among them), I was generally happy.
What I didn't know at the time is how quickly I would start to take Apple's elegant, beautiful mixture of software and hardware for granted.
During the last year, I started to become disheartened with Apple's relative slow hardware progression on the iMacs. The latest hardware refresh a few months ago was the last straw for me. I saw PCs getting BluRay, i7s, nice video cards, and I was getting jealous.
The thing is, my Macs were fulfilling my needs. I couldn't just sit on it, I went and about a new Dell. Looking forward to the possibilities of the near future (Windows 7, new hardware, compatibility with all software), I accepted the cost of having an ugly-looking tower back under my desk again.
So here we are now. As I said, my Dell arrived yesterday. I was crushed.
Why? What happened? Well, again and without getting into boring technical details, I am an IT guy, so I know what's going on when there's a problem. In short summary, the machine which was supposed to be the redemption of PCs for me turned out to have a damaged faceplate on the BluRay drive door, the LCD had a stuck pixel out of the box (within acceptable LCD failure rate, so no replacement), the performance wasn't near where I had hoped.
Now, this is my fault for lack of proper research, I suppose. Nevertheless, right now my gut instinct is to go right back to using my iMac as my primary home machine and take the Dell to work or something and use it as a workstation (maybe where it belongs).
What I realized from this whole affair is that, while I won't claim true Apple Zealot status just yet, I'm becoming a stronger believer in the quality of Apple's overall hardware and software engineering and support. It's almost to the point where I don't care if iMacs are 1-2 years behind the leading PC-manufacturers in specs. I'm beginning to see that there's a reason why. Quality engineering and testing takes time!
Anyway, I could go on praising how enjoyable my Macs are to use, or how frustrated I am right now with Dell, but I think I've made my point.
I would advise anyone considering switching to carefully look at Apple's excellent track record on Q/A and taking care of customers. I know everyone has some anecdotal stories about this sort of thing, and this has been mine, for better or worse.

I am a very recent switcher from a Dell XPS Gen 2. It was a very noisy beast but fast and any problems with it were fixed in my home the following day by a Dell technician. I must admit - it is good to get rid of the large intrusive noisy box on my desk but - this IMac is getting noisier by the day = gurgles and loud buzz - seems to have a lag and I only use it for web browsing e-mail, web design (dreamweaver) and word processing. I don't run games etc on it. Three weeks old and it has crashed on me during a copy and paste - got the wheel of death. So my switch from Dell to Mac - experience not as good as I thought it would be (and I really really wanted it to be good).

  • I can't use my iMac

I have an early 2009 iMac running on 10.5.8. This weekend, when I booted it up, it asked me to enter an username and a password in order to be able to log in. Thing is, I've had this computer for 3 years and it never asked me that before. Which basically means that I don't even have a username/password to enter. I tried every combinations I could think of, thinking that maybe it was just a setting I had forgotten. But two days later, I'm still unable to log in my computer. I've tried booting it up in single-user mode and enter a couple of commands I found here, on Apple's website, but it didn't work. Yesterday, I finally found my Install DVD so I tried to use it in order to reset the passwords and stuff but that didn't work either.
Then, when nothing happened, I closed everything and went to bed. Today, I went to see a friend of mine, thinking he might have been able to help me out. We found a different method then the one proposed by Apple with overall just one different line of code. I went back home and tried to boot up my iMac using the single-user mode... But no matter how long I hold down CMD+S and no matter when I start holding them down... Nothing happens. It just opens as it normally would and ask me for an username and a password. I tried booting it up using the Install DVD and same thing. Nothing works. So basically, right now, I'm stuck on my Mom's PC and I don't like it. At all. So hm... Help? Please?

  • Hello, are there many others having problems with creating Genius Playlists from their iPhone 5's

    Hello People,
are there many others experiencing problems creating Genius Playlists from their iPhone 5's???
I have a 64GB Black iPhone 5 and a 32GB White iPhone 5, I have recently performed a fresh install (wiped phone memory and installed Apps individually again) yet even after this and no less then several calls to Apple I am still unable to create a genius playlist on either phone. The message I receive after hitting the Genius "star" is "The operation couldn't be completed. Operation timed out" Operation timed out."
I have tried this also on 3G and receive the same message........

Sometimes things have to be explained in more detail for the general consumer who has been conditioned for decades to think about wireless  cellphone audio / light data to [anything other device else] connectivity in a certain fashion. That is to say Bluetooth dependent ...
For the non-technical person, which overwhelmingly many Apple users are, they would see that bulleted point and think if Bluetooth is not paired and active, then they would not received the full scope of their Continuity features.
It would have been better for the copywriter who wrote this to (*) footnote this entry and explain that while Bluetooth recognition may be necessary between Yosemite and iPhone, SMS Push to iMessage and Mac Calling does not require an actively paired connection as these functions are dependent on iCloud and both devices being registered on the same WiFi network.
Thank you to all who helped me get my mind around and figure this out.

  • IPhone 5's Bluetooth Not Staying Connecting For Continuity Support on Yosemite

    Devices:
Macbook Pro Mid-2010 running OSX 10.10.2
    Iphone 5 running iOS 8.1.3
*NOTE: I understand that due to the version of the Bluetooth protocol in my machine, not all continuity features are available (Handoff, Air Drop, MBP Instant Hotspot)
However SMS to IMessage and the ability to make and receive calls from my Mac should be OK according to Apple's system requirements one-sheeter:
System requirements for Continuity on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac - Apple Support
    ================================================================================ =====================
    Here's my problem.
I finally took the plunge last night and updated my iPhone 5 from 7.1 to 8.1.3 to access the iCloud Drive and additional continuity features integrated into Yosemite.
When I tried to pair my iPhone 5 with my MBP over Bluetooth, all seemed to go well for the first 5 seconds.
    - Both devices were in discovery mode.
    - Mac saw the phone and displayed a security code
    - iPhone displayed the same security code and asked if I would like to pair with MBP
    - Pairing took place. Each devices Bluetooth profile / device showed up in my MBP Bluetooth's Preferences  and in my iPhone's Bluetooth.
    - 5 seconds later, there's no connection between devices.
    My iPhone displays:
"Connection Unsuccessful: Make sure [Macbook Pro] is turned on and in range." (The phone is 5 inches away)
Then sometimes I get this message:
"Connection Unsuccessful: [Macbook Pro] is not supported.
No rhyme or reason between the two either.
Here's the baffling part: When I activate my Phone's HotSpot function, the Bluetooth works and connects with my MBP allowing it to use my cell phone network's data for internet connectivity.
I don't understand what is going on or how to correct this? Can anyone succinctly explain how to correct this problems in layman terms?
If the devices can communicate long enough to exchange security codes and verify their identities, then use Hotspot,  there is clearly a data exchange happening. Where is the break down taking place when it comes time to stay connected to so I can continue to use the limited continuity features.
I've seen this question posted before by people having problems with many different model years of MBP including the most recents models, so I know it's not mutually exclusive to my model year, but cannot seem to find clarity on an answer.

I have an IPhone 5 black, an want tho change for the white one. Only 17 days and the painting is foling of :( . The phone is protected from day 1. Need help. Bought from Vodafone Portugal.
    Thx

If a defect in a single device causes you decide that you will no longer purchase Apple products, that is certainly within your rights to decide. But I'd suggest you allow Apple to replace your iPhone, which again will be another black model, and see if that unit fares better. Then if that replacement iPhone has the same problem with the coating flaking off, you would have justification for asking Apple to replace the black iPhone with a white one.
By the way, we are all just fellow users here, so making blanket statements about Apple's overall product quality and threatening to stop buying Apple products really is of no help to anyone.
    Regards.

  • Power and Usability versus price.

    Hi there,
I am looking for a good review article comparing Apple's overall performance (iMac, if available + MS Office 2008 for Mac) with comparibly priced professional quality pc hardware running linux + virtual windows for a broad usage spectrum including apporoximately 50% unix-based science applications and 50% Microsoft based office applications.
Individual experiences and recommendations are very welcome, too!
    Thanks,

  • Possible new imac

Well, my computer was hit by lighting as explained in one of my other posts, and insurance is replacing it. I can get a new G5 Imac. I was going to order it tomorrow. But now i am noticing a TON of posts about problems and defects! Like logic boards and fans. How big of a threat is this? Anyone know like a percentage of defects to good ones? I don't want to be stuck with something i have to fix all the time. I have an Ibook that has had bad logic boards. I don't want to deal with that again. *** is up with apple and logic boards! So, do you think it is safe to get the imac? also, the closest apple store is 4 hours away. So i couldn't go there if i had problems! Thanks for your insight!

also, one of the PC magazines did a survey of customer satisfaction, and Apple came out ahead of pretty much every Windows PC manufacturer.
(I will have to see if I can track that referrence down...)
Ahh, here it is: PC Magazine 18th Annual Reader Satisfaction Survey - 08/24/05 Quotes from article:
"...nearly 14,000 PC Magazine readers [responsed] ...
"Who's doing it right? As usual, Apple receives the highest ratings for overall satisfaction with both desktops and notebooks, and it is a Readers' Choice award recipient.
"Once again, Apple achieves scores that are far and away the highest for all vendors in our survey, earning Readers' Choices in both desktops and notebooks. For Apple, in both the desktop and notebook sections of the survey, every single score is significantly better than the industry average for Windows machines. No exceptions. Apple's overall score for desktops is 9.2, and the closest competing score, Alienware's, is 8.8. Apple's overall score for notebooks, 9.2, is just as high, and the rest are even further behind: IBM and Fujitsu are the closest, at 8.4."
Pretty sweet praise from readers of a primarily PC oriented magazine. 8^)

  • IWeb pages disappeared!

Hi there! I brought up iWeb to add content to my website and it's not there! Hopefully it's a glitch but something tells me i may have to start all over again with this. I went to my Mobile Me account and idisk is not even working so i can't get through that way. Help! Am I totally 'Out of Luck'? Thanks. Thia

Sorry to hear your work is lost. This is not a typical Apple experience overall but unfortunately it is typical in this scenario. When or if you have saved your iWeb outside the default file folder Library/Application Support/iWeb, when Apple updates iWeb it often forgets where you were pointing iWeb to originally.
This is the third time it has happened to me, luckily this last time I didn't count on Apple to live up to their brand promise (they usually do, but of all things not to, people's pictures, memories and websites are something you don't want to mess with as you all know).
I backed up my site using Time Machine, unfortunately the last back up was April 27th so I'm still losing months of blogs about my daughter (which someday I was hoping to share with her when she's older). Disappointing that they can't get this right for a few people.
If you moved your domain.sites or domain.sites2 files to another location aside from the default you can try to find them and double click them to open. If you can't find them, you're SOL without a back up. All in all, my only terrible heartbreaking experience on a Mac.

  • IWeb background disappeared

I saved an iWeb site to a folder, checked its contents, all OK. But then when I upload it with TRANSMIT, a page background disappears! Later, on re-checking the folder, it actually made it disappear in the folder too! Like magic!
I have tried erasing the old folder and creating a new one, uploading it again, and the same thing happens! Any ideas?

  • Any differences between 2nd generation and 3rd genration i-touch

any differences between 2nd generation and 3rd genration i-touch.
    thanks

Game performance is about 10% faster with the 3g, and Apple claims overall speed is 50% faster - though it's hard to tell the difference in everyday usage. The 3g has faster wireless. Most important, the 3g has a maximum of 64gigs storage, which can be very convenient when you're juggling videos, mp3s, podcasts, and audiobooks.

  • IPhone 6-Darkish band and off yellow color top of screen on white backgrounds.

I'm wandering if anyone is experiencing the following concern that I have? I own the iPhone 6 Silver/White with 16GB mem.
Across the top of the screen on white backgrounds there seems to be a dark shadow cast from the edge. The dark shadowing is most pronounced towards the upper right corner of the screen, slightly in the bottom left (when the phone is held normal... Home button on the bottom (AKA touch ID), volume rocker on the left side).
In the first image you will observe the the upper right corner of the phone is located to the top-left of the image near "21 SEP-Sunday."
In the second image you will observe that I have rotated the screen/phone 180 degrees. The upper right corner of the phone will be in the bottom right of the image. You'll also notice that there is a dark band that runs across the top of the screen, slightly on the bottom.
I noticed this on some of the iPhone 6s at my local Apple store as well. It seemed most common with the White/Gold-silver models. The Black/Space Grays mostly had pristine screens when I compared mine next to them. I was going to show an Apple rep, but there were, no kidding, hundreds of folks waiting in two lines for an iPhone 6. So I didn't bother. I called Apple for a replacement, but they said I would need to send them the phone back first and they do not offer collateral and allowing me to keep the phone until a replacement arrives. That's bogus :-(

    buldogg77, nbuubu and bwible.
I decided to return the iPHone 6. I have not had good experience with Apple products. I purchased three recently, which all had major issues (purchased within weeks of the iPhone 6). I had a 5s, which was going into low-signal mode and burning out the battery before mid-day. I had a Mac-Mini that kept dropping the wifi signal and had issue reconnecting when waking from sleep (this became nearly useless for anything online) and a iPhone 5c that could not be activated (a complete brick). The 5c was the last purchase (on-top of the Mac-Mini) that made me give up. I was not going to exchange four products that cost around $2k.
I ended up ordering the Moto X second Gen. It has an amoled display and amoleds typically don't have uniformity and hot pixel issues. Also, I got accidental coverage, accessories and 32GB of memory for less than I did for the purchase of the iPhone 6 16GB (about $600 after $50 student rebate). I also found Siri was not as good as Google's voice services (or directions for that matter) and the OS was not as intuitive with multitasking IMO.
I am a fan of Apple products overall and it's unfortunate Foxconn is doing them a disservice. Hopefully you all get your issues worked out. I'm baffled at how Apple products tend to get the best reviews on screen quality. Before a review should be given on accuracy, how about back-light uniformity? That is just as important for the overall user experience IMO.
