Apple tv playing hd content - limitted?

Follow this:
I have an ekstern hard-drive (1000GB) where I keep HD-movies on. My idea is to buy the apple tv so i could watch the movies on my 42" flatscreen. But it seems that it cannot be done without loosing quality... and that wasnt my idea :-/
Can apple tv not play files over 4 GB?
It s possible to minimize the size of the files using VisualHub, but going from 8Gb file to 4 is no good.
Any good ideas? (other than dropping back to the windows-world and traditionel mediacenters )

there is currently a limit of 4gb for streaming... people have gotten more than 4gb to sync but it's touch and go.
they'll have to raise this ceiling anyway to allow HD content for long movies I would think.
You mentioned your concern being not sacrificing quality... what format are you using for your HD content? Since AppleTV only does 720p at the moment it's feasible to get great quality HD with good enough compression at 720p to fit it in. Then again, I've been wrong before.
I average about 1.1 gigs/hour currently of 2500 kps using h.264 from a dvd source. so 480p at 2500 leaves very little blocking, artifacts, etc. I'm not real good with the math on 720p though to know if it would work out.
I'd like someone with better knowledge to give some input though as it appears the HD war may be reaching it's tipping point.

I am not exactly sure what you mean by "authorised", but I am experiencing a similar problem...or the same, in that Apple TV keeps telling me to enable home sharing in my MacBook Pro. It does not seem to recognize that home sharing is already enabled on my Laptop.
Is home sharing and "authorised" one in the same? It used to work just fine before these recent Apple TV updates.

  • Apple TV not playing purchased content. iTunes account Issue?

Like many others, I'm having issues getting Apple TV to play purchased content for a specific iTunes account. After hitting the play button, the movie or TV show thinks about it then reverts back to the information page.  This has been happening for just under a week.
I have two other accounts on my Apple TV, and they are both working OK. I asked another mate with an Apple TV to load my account onto his unit and he gets the same issue.
In an attempt to rectify the issue I have:
Reset my password fo itunes. No luck.
Restored the factory settings on the Apple TV. No luck.
Double check account and billing details. No Luck.
I really want to get this resolved. Can someone suggest a fix please!

    SOLVED.
I had the same problem minutes ago... I solved it by signing out my apple id from the apple tv and then sign in again. Movies start playing now! Hope this works for you too

  • Your apple tv is not authorized to play this content

I keep getting this error whenever I try to watch the movie I've rented on my Apple TV (1st gen).
"your apple tv is not authorized to play this content"
This is a rental directly on the ATV, no computer transfer involved.
So far I've rebooted the ATV, reset the ATV, rebooted my router (airport extreme) and my cable modem (Virgin media), removed and re-added my iTunes account on the ATV, checked the location is correct (UK), check all the ports are open and triple checked the internet connection (movie download and youtube work fine) and still no joy.
I've watched many many movies before without any troubles, 'til now that is.
I've not changed anything on my network or ATV since the last movie I watched sucessfully.
I'm running software version 3.0.2 on the ATV.
Anyone have any ideas what else I could try to fix this?
    Cheers
    Neil

I just got the same thing. ATV2 was working fine last week. Now I can rent movies but now I can't  play them. Instead I get this ridiculous message YOUR APPLE TV IS NOT AUTHORIZED TO PLAY THIS CONTENT.
    Have reset everything. Nothing works.
I bet the iTunes system is in the process of being upgraded to make ready for iPhone 4s and ios5 next week and the upgrades are screwing up Rentals.
I'll file for a credit for the unviewable movie. This is ridiculous. Just ridiculous.

  • Your Apple TV is not Authourised to play this content?

Newbie to Mac / Apple Question:
    The story (so far):
I have successfully connected my Apple TV via ethernet cable to my iMac & internet. (Did network test & it was 100% fine). Downloaded a rented movie from iTunes and it plays fine on my iMac (watched the first 30 seconds). I then synced iTunes to my Apple TV & transferred/synced the rented movie to Apple TV.
I can see the rented movie on Apple TV and when I select "Play" it says "authourising" then a message comes up that says: "Your Apple TV is not Authourised to play this content" and it just stays on the screen.
I can do trailers no problems at all just not the rented movie.
    I have:
1] Deauthorised & reauthourised my account with iTunes and Apple TV, resynced with Apple TV and when I push play I still get the same message.
2] Transfered the movie back to iTunes & it still plays fine.
3] Synced it back to Apple TV but still getting the same message.
Any thoughts of other things I can do? I have tried all the Apple support documentation but to no avail. I'm in Australia.
Many thx in advance for any suggestions.
    ~Wardy

I have this problem on and off and at one time ended up downloaded another season of a particular tv show. Apple tv is not into negative numbers for how many times it has crashed, read content can't be viewed on this computer. These sorts of things happens not 1 minute after you view that very content.
I have resynced, rebuilt unplugged and replugged etc.

  • Receiving error message: Your Apple TV is not authorized to play this content. Please help

I'm receiving an error message on my Apple TV.  I downloaded a movie to my MAC, the Mac and the Apple TV were in sync.  My Apple TV shows that the movie is "unwatched" in my movie selection area.  When I try to play the movie I am receiving the message "YOUR APPLE TV IS NOT AUTHORIZED TO PLAY THIS CONTENT".  Has anyone else every had this issue or know how to resolve the problem?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If it's the Apple TV 1 you have: This problem seems to have started around October 28, it appears to affect content purchased only on other devices but played on the Apple TV 1.
There have been other workarounds suggested from time to time, but I have found the simplest solution is to purchase something on the Apple TV 1 directly (There may be free content in some locations and this appears to work just as well).
Once the content has been purchased, it will not only play as normal, but will also allow all other content purchased on other devices after October 28 to play as well.
Some have reported that it's necessary to restart the Apple TV before and/or after purchase, but I found it worked without.

  • Apple TV gen 1 says Not authorized to play this content...

My apple tv gen1 has synced all my tv shows and movies, and I am unable to view the shows as it says that it is not authorized to play this content.  I have tried:
    reset my router
de authorized and re- authorized my computer
signed in again (although half the time it continually says that my username or password is incorrect)
I have reset my apple tv both soft and back to factory settings
I have installed version 10.4.1 of itunes on my computer
I can play all the content on my ipad, iphone and computer just not on the apple tv!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel.

  • Apple tv 1st generation displays message "Your apple TV is not authorized to play this content."

I rented a movie on my iTunes account on my computer. It takes forever (3 hours to download) so then I transferred it to my Apple TV (1st gen). Now when I ask the Apple TV box to play it, I get the message, "Your apple TV is not authorized to play this content.". This is a movie for children (american girl, kit kitterage movie) and I have followed this proceedure before with success with other movies.

Same network and apple id associated with the atv?

  • CANNOT PLAY HD CONTENT BECAUSE MY 24" APPLE DISPLAY NOT "HDCP" AUTHORIZED

Hi I'm sure this topic must have come up before but nothing came up in a search. I'm trying to play an HD TV show and I can't on my 24" Apple cinema display hooked up to my 15" Macbook pro core 2 duo through a mini DV port. I'm getting the error message that the display is not authorized to play HDCP protected movies. How can this be when it is an Apple display and why am I getting this message on a free HD video? I also have not been able to play any itunes video on my external display in full screen mode. When I go to full screen mode the video transfers to the computer screen. I'd appreciate knowing if these are common problems and if this is what Apple has designed or if this is a fault and if there is a solution to these problems?
    Thanks For any help.

Hi BSteely thanks for the reply! I have a newer Apple 24" Cinema Display connected through a Mini DisplayPort (pardon my error tibor.moldovan) and it has supported HDCP, but the other day I got an error message when I tried to play a HD video in iTunes saying that my display is not HDCP authorized. I had had that error message previously when trying to play HD content on a TV attached to my computer but not when playing it on my Apple display, so I was surprised when it happened.
+"The issue of full screen video coming back to the computer's screen (I assume you mean on the MacBook Pro) is expected. The way to work around that is to make the external screen the primary screen. This can be done by running the MBP in closed clamshell mode with only the external screen being active."+
Thanks so much for the explanation about the full screen issue. When I first got my external screen and I went to full screen mode it played in the external monitor, but after an upgrade it stopped doing this. I will give this a try.
