Apple TV - really not useful for streaming

I bought an Apple TV last week - I have 400GB of Apple Lossless audio files stored on my PC, and a number of TV shows in MPEG2 format, extracted from my Humax digital recorder.
The size of my media library means that syncing to the Apple TV's paltry 40GB HDD isn't an option, so I'm forced to use the ATV by streaming from iTunes.
First problem - whenever I shut down iTunes and turn off my PC (at night, for example) and restart it, ATV completely fails to be able to reconnect to the same library. Every time, I have to remove Apple TV from iTunes, go into the Sources menu on ATV, connect to iTunes, go back to my PC, enter the new passcode, and then streaming comes back up. This is, frankly, ludicrous. My Roku SoundBridge manages to remember a connection when the server PC shuts down - why can't ATV?
As I already have a SoundBridge, one of the main reasons for wanting an ATV was to get album art. But if you are streaming, ATV only seems to display album art that is embedded in each individual file - it can't make use of the iTunes album art feature, where artwork is stored separately to avoid bloat on the audio files.
Finally, the restricted choice of video codecs is ludicrous. I have video stored as DVD-standard MPEG2 program streams, but iTunes won't accept that, and QuickTime won't even convert it.
I wondered why, when I bought the ATV from the Apple Store in Bluewater, that the sales assistant told me, without my asking, that I had 14 days to bring it back in if I wasn't happy. I've never been told that in that past when buying anything - it does suggest a lack of confidence in the product. That said, I shall be taking advantage of it - the ATV is going back. I may buy another one in a few years when Apple have actually finished it...

• MPEG-4 Part 10 (H.264) is in no way an inferior
quality format. It is in fact far superior to MPEG-2,
offering either smaller file size (better
compression) for the same quality or greater quality
for the same file size. It is the standard for HD-DVD
& BluRay, for most HD satellite services, & for most
terrestrial broadcasting (except in the US, where it
is being considered as an upgrade to MPEG-2 for
ATSC).
If you are truly concerned about file size or
quality, this is the format you should be using, not
MPEG-2.
A fair point - however, I do not believe that it is possible to convert MPEG-2 to MPEG-4/H.264 with no loss of quality. While MPEG-4 may well be a more efficient codec, not supporting native MPEG-2 results in lower quality DVD-sourced material, and I would contend that DVD is currently by far the largest source for content that people might want to display on their AppleTV.
• Apple TV is not sold as a media server but as
iTunes for your TV. You seem annoyed that the product
isn't something it doesn't claim to be. This makes as
much sense as complaining that a car you bought can't
fly.
Errr - no. I don't expect it to be a media server; I expect it to be a media client, which is what it is sold as. The fact that it ships with a limited size hard drive and then fails to offer full functionality as a client in a streaming system is my major complaint. It does indeed claim to be "iTunes for your TV", but what it actually is is "iTunes for your TV, as long as your combined audio and video library is no bigger than 30GB". (And yes, I do mean 30GB - it would appear that 10GB of the drive isn't actually usable for media files.)
• Providing MPEG-2 support is a necessity for any
standard DVD player, & for that reason the cost of
its license is built into every player on the planet,
including those in computers. However, that license
only grants one right: to decode DVD content coming
from the player. To do anything else, you need a
license with more rights. If you don't like this
licensing arrangement, complain to the licensing
authority (& good luck with that), not to Apple. The
latter makes as much sense as complaining to Apple
about Windows licensing arrangements.
Other vendors of competing products have included MPEG-2 codecs and (presumably) the appropriate license. It is technically possible to run the MPEG-2 codec on AppleTV, as hackers have already managed to do so. To avoid including this capability because Apple weren't willing to negotiate a license is ludicrous. The MPEG-2 codec is available from Apple as a QT plugin for $20 - an MPEG-2 license would not have added significantly to the cost of an Apple TV.
• If you feel the Pinnacle ShowCenter 200 better
suits your needs, why not just buy it instead & skip
the rant? This is a support forum intended for help
with & discussion of the features of Apple TV. It is
a good resource if you are interested in pre-purchase
information or resolving post-purchase issues. It is
not a support forum for emotional release issues
(venting). There is nothing wrong with that -- in its
proper place, it's probably healthy -- but this just
isn't that kind of place.
Fair point, but in that case, would someone like to correct either of my assumptions (if they are indeed incorrect):
1. A streaming connection to AppleTV is broken to the point that it must be deleted and reinstated from scratch if the server PC is shut down and restarted.
2. A streaming connection to AppleTV cannot display album art from the iTunes database unless that art is also embedded in every audio file streamed.
Nowhere in any of the publicity for AppleTV does it suggest that you get reduced functionality when streaming compared to when syncing, and yet on these two points, it is (as far as I can tell) deficient. If all I wanted was a 30GB media library connected to my TV, I'd have plugged in my iPod - if AppleTV does not offer full functionality in a streaming environment, I can't see what it's for, which is why I'm a little peeved.

I think you can solve your problems by removing your AppleID email address from BOTH the Messages setting on your iPhone and the iMessages settings on your Mac.
    On iPhone:
    Settings > Messages > iMessage > Dissabled
Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > touch the "(i)" < touch "Remove This Email"
    On Mac:
    Open "Messages" application
    Click "Messages menu > Preferences
    Click "Accounts"
    Select your AppleID account
Under the "You can be reached for messages at" settings, uncheck your AppleID email address and your phone number
Then uncheck the "Enable this account" setting
And lastly, ask all of your friends with iPhones to delete all iMessage conversations (blue bubbles) in their entirety.
To test, send a friend a new text using their phone number (not their email address) and watch the color of the bubble.  If it's green then you are using SMS.

I tried to update the App that I purchased but the message told me that my Apple account is not valid for use outside of US and I must switch back to US store to able to do it. How can I switch the account from foreign countries back to US?

    On your phone (from http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1311):
    Change your iTunes Store country
Sign in to the account for the iTunes Store region you'd like to use. Tap Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Apple ID: > View Apple ID > Country/Region.
Follow the onscreen process to change your region, agree to the terms and conditions for the region if necessary, and then change your billing information.

Change the password without using email authentication as discussed here: Apple ID: Changing your password in case the other person has access to your email account.  If you aren't able to do that, contact the Apple account security team for assistance: Apple ID: Contacting Apple for help with Apple ID account security.

  • "Apple ID cannot be used for MobileMe" when setting up Find My iPhone app

Okay, folks, spent some time with MobileMe support via chat this morning. This is what I've learned. Apparently you CANNOT use an Apple ID, regardless of what format it's in (usually a full email address) AS LONG AS IT'S ASSOCIATED WITH A MOBILE ME (ME.COM ADDRESS) ACCOUNT THAT IS CLOSED OR NO LONGER ACTIVE. Unfortunately, there is no way to disassociate the two and there is no way the old MobileMe (me.com address) account can be deleted.
Apparently, I had some issue when I was trying out the MobileMe for the trial period many months ago and for some reason couldn't use my primary Apple ID (my primary email address), so I created a me.com address for the MobileMe account. Eventually, I cancelled the MobileMe account because the cost wasn't justified for the features it offered. Unfortunately, that association with my primary Apple ID is permanent and THAT is the source of the "This Apple ID canot be used for MobileMe" error. Or at least that's ONE reason for it.
The solution? Create a completely new, separate Apple ID using a valid email address from which you can receive a verification email. The address is NOT used to receive any further emails from Apple. Only to create logon credentials. Do NOT associate this email address with your current/primary Apple ID or any other Apple ID. This is what you use to set up Find My iPhone/iPad, etc. using the MobileMe setup in Settings>Mail/Contacts/Calendars as well as the Find My iPhone App (plus it's your logon to the MobileMe Find My iPhone web page).
When you log in to the MobileMe page, BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU ENTER YOUR APPLE ID IF IT'S A FULL EMAIL ADDRESS: apparently, the ID field automatically tries to change it to "[email protected]" instead of your "[email protected]". Just check it before and after you enter your Apple ID password and submit.
I did this and it works. Find My iPhone app and service works beautifully. Spotted my iPad right where I'm at on a map. I sent a message to my iPad via the service (which also offers the option to play a sound, lock the device or even wipe the device).
I hope this information helps SOMEONE.
Oh...interesting footnote: I was informed that APPLE IDs CANNOT BE DELETED. Even if you create a "test" Apple ID (like I did during our troubleshooting session) with some barely used email account using a weak password. That means, regardless of whether you use it or not for MobileMe/Find My iPhone, you really, really need to give it a SECURE password (if you're going to keep that email account alive). So yeah, there are a lot of dormant Apple IDs floating around out there!

    I agree.
I found this 'bug' out the other day when getting ready for my new iPhone I was setting up my iPad with some new apps too and wanted to work with Find My iPhone.
Here's the deal; my main AppleID is just a simple 'Username' not a '[email protected]' AppleID.
I've had this since the need for AppleIDs were used for these forums and the iTunes Store, AppStore, etc.
So it works fine and well with that stuff but not with find my iphone on my iPad as it wants a full email account, either a '@me.com' or a '[email protected]' AppleID which I did create but I think it was used as Job profile or something other along those lines (NOT used for a MobileMe account or .mac either).
And I only have access to one email now and I dont feel comfortable having multiple email addresses that I dont check or have no use for, call my simple or naive but thats just how it goes.
What I'd like to do is be able to use either AppleID for my Find My iPhone app and everything else.
And I think thats a good point, '@me.com's for all. make it a whole lot easier in my opinion.
merge all the apple accounts you created into a MobileMe, simplifies the situation and makes it easier connect to all Apple Services.
My itunes account, apple.com store account, appstore account, main AppleID for the past couple years it "Maxwell Stanley" but it does NOT work with Find My iPhone. So i created [email protected] (example.com is in place of my true email domain for privacy reasons) and that doesnt work as it statse it Cannot Be used.
My 'Maxwell Stanley" Apple ID's email associated with it was [email protected] i tried changing it to [email protected] but still doesnt recognize that as an AppleID even though its associated with "Maxwell Stanley".
I event ried to use the SAME email that is associated with my 2nd AppleID '[email protected]' with the appleid 'Maxwell Stanley' and no dice.
running out of options it seems.
Any idea on the best solution?
    Thank you!

  • How pinnacle can be used for streaming video for mac app?

How pinnacle can be used for streaming video for mac app?

    Hi naturalfemale,
As mentioned in the referring article, closed captioning content has to be specifically added/enabled to a video for closed captioning to function:
    Additional Information
Not all videos include caption or subtitle tracks. Check the documentation for the video you are using to see if it includes these features.
OS X: Using captioning features in Mavericks

At the moment, I do not believe there is an option for universal captioning.

I am puzzled by this. The laptop doesn't need the Apple ID - but iTunes does. I could be missing something but ....
Why would you not be able to use your existing Apple ID and iTunes account on a new laptop? If you authorized the computer - you should be able to use your existing account - unless you already had 5 computers authorized with the existing ID - and that was why iTunes would not accept the ID. However, I'm sure that you would have received a popup message from iTunes telling you that you had reached the limit.
I just received a new MBP and my daughter did as well. My entire family shares an Apple ID and we had no issues at all with my Apple ID and iTunes on our new computers and I did not have to sign up for a new account. Did you even try the old ID?

    Need Help Ye,
boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Is it still very slow?

Why when I try to update certain app it require an old email address and password I have not used for years and I do I get to update them on my new details

Apps are tied to the Apple ID that was used to purchase them and you will always need to use that ID and password in order to update them.
Saying that you do get to update them on your new details makes no sense at all.

I'm having the same issue with my iPad. I also used to have MobileMe, but cancelled. I seem to have two Apple ID's with the same email address. One Apple ID is not an email, the other Apple ID is my email address. They have different passwords and I can manage both. My iTunes Store one is the one without the email address. I had to use the email address Apple ID for Game Room.
I am in Live Chat Support with Apple right now.
