Apple TV reverse sync photos

My portable hard drive has cratered and I'm not sure if I can have the data recovered or not. However, alot of my photos on the drive were synced to my Apple TV and are still there. Is there any possibility of reverse syncing those photos back to my computer? My hard drive is a WD Passport, btw, and it is not initialized in the Disk Management. Maybe someone knows a fix to that as well which would resolve my problem as well. Many photos on the hd are my son's photos that I backed up for him before he left for Iraq. Those photos are NOT on my Apple TV so data recovery is the ideal solution. Thanx

No easy way to get content off AppleTV I'm afraid.
Your only options are to:
- dismantle and remove internal drive, and try and read the drive inserted in a caddy (but you'd need a Mac for that due to the file system)
- hack AppleTV to gain command line access (you might need some utilities to do this on Windows)
Neither are ideal options.
Depending on how valuable the photos are your best option may be a professional data recovery solution but there would be no guarantees.
Best case would be if it's not the passport drive but the control electronics/interface that's gone. Might also be worth checking that your USB cable and port on PC are ok.
If you do gain access to the drive and you think it's partially corrupted do not delete/write to it.
Might also be worth checking if WD have any diagnostic apps online for you to try and determine what's wrong.
You haven't added any new drives/optical drives recently, which in some configurastions could take that externald drive letter and hide it ?

  • Apple TV Reverse Sync FAIL

I buy content on my Apple TV and it has started not reverse syncing that content so I can see it on my MacBook iTubes library.
I use the same iTunes account on both so they should have the same content
no matter on which I purchase on. Even when I right-click the Apple TV icon in
iTubes and select 'Trasnfer Purchases' it syncs for 2 seconds... then nothing.
This was not an issue on Tiger and iTunes 7/8 etc.
But on Snow Leopard and iTunes 9, Apple TV 3.0.1 it's annoying as ****.

This isn't good enough from Apple. This is not some small glitch, it's a FUNDAMENTAL flaw. and needs to be sorted ASAP.
AppleCare have been absolutely useless, shuttling me back and forth between iTunes support, Apple TV support and back again with nobody taking responsibility.
What does it take for these issues to get to the people they need to!

  • Apple TV reverse sync with iMac

So I made the mistake of trying to use Senuti to grab some songs off of my brothers iPod. My Mac lost the connection with our AppleTV and won't recognize it and now my entire library of 4500 songs is gone. My iTunes folder only has 1000 songs on it (I think that it also got corrupted during my Senuti sync). The Apple TV still has my 4500 songs on it. I have been told that the sync is only a one-way street from Mac to AppleTV. Any suggestions to get the music from my Apple TV back to my computer?

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
I doubt  have any objections to people recovering data whether it be by conventional methods or unsupported ones or indeed whether anyone voids their warranty or not. As others have said there is no easy way to move data from the tv to your mac, but you can remove the HD from it and do so but it does void your warranty.
If you are in the slightest doubt about such methods I suggest approaching a data recovery practice that has experience with macs.

  • 1st gen Apple TV - synced photos not visible

I have my iTunes set to sync all my photos with my 1st gen Apple TV and this has worked flawlessly until today.
Although the "settings" tab on iTunes shows all my photos are synced, on the Apple TV when I go to my Photos tab I get the error message that "there are no photos on your Apple TV  - to sync photos set up a connection with iTunes"
I do have a connection with iTunes - all my other media is synced, and according to iTunes the photos should be there too.
I'm at a loss as to what to do, and would be grateful for any advice.
    Thanks in advance

  • I can't modify synced photos or album on my iPod touch 5

I can't delete synced photos or synced albums from my iPod. I can't add mobile photos to my synced photos or synced album on my iPod either. I synced photos from my computer to my iPod. I threw away my old computer when I bought a Macbook Pro. I want to delete my previously synced photos from my old computer. How can I unsynced the photos now? Can I ask Apple to allow synced photos to be deleted from the iPod? Can I also ask Apple to allow me to add more photos on my iPod to the album of synced photos?

Apple has not said why they do not allow deleting synced photos/albums directly from the iPod. You either have to unsync them or use a third-party program like TouchCopy or PhoneView.
You can do this and just not copy the synced photos to the computer via a third-party program

  • Apple TV deletes sync'd content (photos)

My ATV setup is demonstrating a variant of what seems to be a frequently reported problem - erratic sync behavior. In general, the sync process will often (but not always) delete (all) previously sync'd photos from the ATV, despite the fact that the photo sync setting either did not change or they changed in some minor way (ie added another album to the sync selection list). The sync process will complete without complaint, the photos will be gone from the ATV and the "capacity bar" in iTunes, but the settings for photos will still show the "Sync photos from iPhoto", "Selected Albums", and the individually selected albums checked. If I then quit iTunes and restart it, the sync settings for photos are all now mysteriously unchecked, the sync process runs and no photos are sync'd. To get them to sync again, I can sometimes recheck the photo sync boxes and album selections and apply the changes. After waiting for 20 minutes (2500 photos), the sync (sometimes) works and the photos are available on the ATV, the "capacity bar" reflects the photos. As often as it works, the sync will "finish" without complaining, all the boxes will still be checked, yet no photos will be on the ATV or in the "capacity bar". I try this over and over until it finally works and all is well...until something triggers another sync between ATV and iTunes...which usually (but not always) results in another cycle of the above. Very frustrating, very fragile, very beta.
As I would like to solve this problem for myself and others, I am going to provide as much detail as possible to paint a complete picture. I am also happy to try suggested solutions or data gathering ideas. After all, I need to re-sync a few times a day any way!
    Environment:
Brand new ATV - s/w up to date - using wi-fi not ethernet - full signal strength
Brand new Apple Extreme in "N, (B,G compatible)" mode
    Macbook Pro (10.4.11)
iTunes 7.5 (19) - library on Macbook Pro - content on NAS
    iPhoto '08 7.1.1 (358) - library freshly rebuilt - library on NAS
Infrant ReadyNAS NV (network attached storage)
    iTunes settings:
    Sync selected movies
    No TV show sync
No music sync (I use streaming for this - works fine)
    No podcast sync
Sync photos from iPhoto, selected albums
Interestingly, I never have problems with the movies (there are only 3 right now) - they never disappear or need to re-sync. To date, this has only happened with the photos. I have reset the ATV to factory settings a number of times - no change. Streaming iTunes music works fine.
I noticed a very similar post on MacRumors:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=316340
+As subject indicates, why does iTunes insist on deleting all the music content that's already been synced to the ATV? It seems like if I launch iTunes following a reboot it immediately goes and "syncs" to the ATV by deleting all the music on the ATV. I've had to re-sync 12GB of music at least 5 times now. Running latest version of iTunes on XP.+
+After it deletes everything, If I just click "sync" for ATV (to get the music back on the device) it doesn't do anything, even though I have the option checked to sync all music and playlists on the music tab of the Apple TV device. Only way to get the music back over there is to ctrl-click my music library (select all) and THEN click sync, and it starts copying. It's almost as if it's doing it by design (because the entire library isn't checked at startup?), but they couldn't have possibly been that ******** designing this, could they? The REALLY stupid thing is that it doesn't bother the 2 podcasts I have sync'd, one the D5 interview with Gates & Jobs and the other a Macbreak. Space is not an issue, as I said I have a 12GB music library and the two video podcasts are about a Gig; that's all that's on it. Any ideas? Anyone else experience this behavior?+
    Thanks,
    Jim
Pretty much the same behavior, but with music. He seemed to pinpoint a connection with "unchecking" songs in iTunes (iTunes, not ATV sync) as the root cause. I can't see a parallel with photos.
    *Hi Jim,*
*I just came across your post and joined the forum because I am having the same exact trouble with my new ATV and Windows XP pro. What I've noted (very frustratingly) is that the ATV will ONLY sync with songs in my iTunes library if they are checked.*
*I have the option "Sync ALL music and playlists" checked in the settings. There is no mention in the manual that sync only happens with content that is check-marked in iTunes...*
*So I have the same thought - surely that cannot be as designed, could it??*
*If it IS by design, it doesn't make sense, because iTunes requires you to check and uncheck songs if you want to only play certain ones, etc - so this means that each time you might happen to uncheck a song because you don't feel like listening to it on your PC iTunes, then it will also get deleted from ATV?!*
*I have to beleive this cannot be how it's supposed to work... I'm going to do some more testing, but for the moment I'm waiting for it to finish syncing my library of 12,600 songs so it'll be a few days...*
    Cheers,
    Jcd
+Unfortunately, it IS how it is designed to work; despite others in the thread saying theirs works like an iPod, I called AppleCare after I purchased a 2nd ATV for downstairs and it exhibited the exact same behavior. The girl I spoke to thought that maybe it was a windows only thing (though I told her for test purposes I'd changed the syncing to my macbook and it worked exactly the same), so she tested from both the Macs & PCs in their lab and confirmed that she experienced the same behavior. I asked her why it didn't sync like an iPod and she said "because that's how they designed it." So I tried a different tact, and asked her if SHE thought it was logical for it to work the way it does, and of course she answered "Yes, because that's how they designed it." Quite frustrating! For my first experience with AppleCare I wasn't overly impressed (is she what they call a "Genius" or do you need to go up the foodchain before reaching the geniuses?), though I do give her credit for taking the time to go find an XP machine to test on -- I was on hold about 10 minutes while she tested that out.+
+Anyway, if you think it should sync like an iPod when you've checked "Sync ALL music and playlists" then definitely send an e-mail to [email protected]; I only have 12GB of music, I can't imagine how frustrated I'd be if I accidentally opened iTunes without everything checked and had to re-sync 12,600 songs!! But the bottom line is I think this design decision was ********, so I let them know that... other than that I do like them, as I mentioned I liked it enough to buy another.+
Thanks in advance for any ideas out there!
    Cheers

Thanks for the quick response...I was hoping to get your input given the amount of time you have put into other posts on this topic.
+My thoughts are that each time your sync occurs the tv is seeing your library as a different library to the one before or perhaps the other way around, this may be due to the way your network assigns it's IP's and other info.+
Hmmm...I don't think my network could be any more simple. The Extreme is connected to Comcast cable modem and dishes out addressed via DHCP. The NAS and the Macbook are connected to the Extreme via ethernet, and the ATV uses wifi. If it were an IP addressing problem, wouldn't you expect problems with the other content? Why just photos? Also, iTunes/ATV never has problems reading the album list. I can add a new album in iPhoto and it shows up in iTunes immediately.
+However the second observation is that you are using a network drive for your library which whilst many have reported success in using such a device is not so far as I know supported by itunes/tv. Are your photo libraries also on this drive and if so have you tried relocating them to a local drive for the purpose of diagnostics.+
Yes, the iPhoto library is on the NAS. I am willing to try the relocation but have a few questions on that. What is the most expedient method to generate a new library in a new location? command+option when bring up iPhoto gives me all of the library/thumbnail rebuild options (which I have done), but it does not give you the option of a new location, does it? Also, I was under the impression that unlike with music, I cannot separate the "library" from the content with iPhoto - which means that I would need to copy all of my photos to the MacBook, which defeats the purpose of the NAS. Again, willing to try this out to pinpoint the problem but would like to keep my photos on the NAS.
I have pondered the possible role of the NAS in the problem long and hard but music on the NAS works in every which way - it syncs fine, it streams fine, etc. The only difference between music and photos that I can come up with is the location of the library itself - the music library is on the laptop while the photo library is on the NAS.
Thanks - will try some things out based on your reply.

I am a new apple/ipad user and trying to transfer photos to my new ipad2 from my windows pc using itunes. The pictures all transfered to my ipad in one very large folder (My Pictures) on the ipad2 instead of the multipule folders that were on my pc. Do I have to re sort all of them into folders on the ipad2 or is it possible to sync the seperate folders to the ipad2?

    Create main folder e.g. Folder A, then sub-folders inside A e.g. B, C, D and have your Photos in B, C, D.
In iTunes Sync, click your device on the left Pane, then on right pane select "Photo" tab.
Make sure Sync photo box is checked, then select folder A, then All folders box within the selection.
Click Apply or Sync button at the lower right window.
you will have B,C,D folders under Albums.

  • Unable to sync photos from iPhoto to Apple TV

I am using iphoto5.0.4 and am unable to sync photos. I select the photo album and click on the "apply" button which greys out for a while and then reverts. When I click on "my photos" in Apple TV I get the message that "There are no photos on your Apple TV." The ATV is able to stream photos from my Powerbook G4 just fine. When I go to "Screen Saver" on the ATV it is only able to access Apple Photos. I upgraded the ATV software without effect. What am I doing wrong?

On the tv you should have selected 'settings/computers/connect to itunes library', I think you likely selected 'settings/computers/connect to shared library'. You may have to select your current shared library and unlink it before you can set it up properly but I'm not too sure as I've not had to do it myself.

  • Sync Photos from Apple TV to a Mac Pro - HELP

    Hello All,
Let's say I lost my photos from iPhoto, but I synced them to my Apple TV. Can I tell the Apple TV to sync my photos back to iPhoto?
I know you can sync music back from an iPod.
    Thank you.

No you cannot readily transfer anything you have synced to the tv back to the mac/pc, you can only transfer purchases.

  • HT2265 sync photos to apple tv

im trying to Sync photos via iTunes to my apple tv (1st generation), but i dont have the option  "Sync photos from: ...", the only thing that appears is "share photos...." please help!!

I am experiencing the exact same problem. I was momentarily able to get the Apple TV to start syncing photos after I moved them all to the public folder in Vista (I thought maybe sharing permissions were a problem), but the problem has no recurred. I can see all the movie and TV content and can sync those files, but it will not sync photos. I have attempted a full reset of the Apple TV to factory condition and started from scratch without resolving the problem.

  • Syncing photos to Apple TV

    Hi
According to iTunes the iPhoto album I selected is showing as synced on the status bar, but ATV say's there are no photos synced to ATV. Any ideas?
    Colin

I am having the same problem. In the iTunes library's "Apple TV" section the "sync photos" is set up correctly. When I sync it it shows memory being used for photos on the Apple TV. When I turn off and then on "sync Photos" the status bar at the top clearly shows the photos being sent to the Apple TV, but they are not there when I go to "photos" on the Apple TV. It tell me to set up photo syncing in iTunes.
I have tried restarting, and even resotring to factory and redownloading the 3.0 software. ???

  • Syncing photos from Aperture to Apple TV

I have first generation Apple TV to which I sync music and photos from an iMac using a wireless connection.
Until recently I used iPhoto. Now I have installed Aperture and cannot get this to sync.
The dropdown menu says "Sync photos from:..."
    iPhoto
    Choose folder…
    Pictures
Aperture is nowhere to be seen.
How do I get Aperture to appear in the menu?

Syncing works by copying selected content to the tv HDD, after which you no longer need any connection to itunes to be able to play this content.
Selection is made either manually or automatically in your sync options within itunes depending on which you choose, automatic sync will sync things like the most recent unwatched items for you.
Anything that isn't synced to the tv can be watched through the streaming of content from your itunes library on your mac/pc, so for streaming to work, you need itunes to be running.

  • I have a generation 1 Appletv with the hard drive.  I have just bought a new mac, but cant seem, to sync photos back to appletv hard drive anymore, i know the Imac is syncing with it because i purchased a movie from Apple TV and it loaded it reg on iMac

Can anyone help me with a generation1 appletv compatability with new Imac question?

    Hi louchad,
The article below should help you sync the photos from your iMac to your Apple TV:
Apple TV (1st generation): Syncing photos via iTunes
The article explains this in more detail with screen shots, but the key points are summarized below for you:
To sync photos from a Mac or Windows PC to Apple TV (1st generation) using photo applications
Make sure you have iTunes 9.0.2 or later.
In iTunes, select the Apple TV icon in the Devices list.
    Click the Photos tab.
    Select "Sync photos from: ..."
On a Mac, choose iPhoto or Aperture from the pop-up menu.
On a Windows PC, choose Photoshop Album or Photoshop Elements from the pop-up menu.
Note: Some versions of Photoshop Album and Photoshop Elements don't support collections. You can still use them to sync all your photos.
If you want to sync all your photos, select "All photos, albums, events, and faces." If you want to sync photos from only some albums, events, faces, or collections, choose "Selected albums, events, and faces…" and select the albums or collections you want.
To sync photos from a folder on your hard disk to Apple TV (1st generation)
Drag the images you want into a folder on your computer. If you want images to appear in separate photo albums on Apple TV (1st generation), create folders inside the main image folder, and drag images into the new folders.
In iTunes, select the Apple TV icon in the Devices list.
    Choose "Sync photos from: ..."
Select "Choose Folder" from the pop-up menu and select your image folder.
I hope this information helps ...

  • Problem syncing photos with Apple TV and iPod

Ever since I connected my Apple TV I have had problems syncing photos with both my iPod and my Apple TV.
The Apple TV gives me an error (no desciption) when I try to sync photos. The iPod gives me an error 39.
iPhotos is working fine. I rebuilt the library using the rebuild library feature and this has not fixed the problem.
I also rebuilt my iTunes library without success in fixing the problem.
How does it sync? Is there some kind of syncing file I need to delete that may be corrupt?
Does anyone have any ideas about what I could try?

    Just a suggestion,
for a speedier and better informed reply, post your question in the AppleTV forums.
