Apple TV Sharing

My first post on Apple! Feels good being amongst all these apple users!
OK,
Hello,
I'm having trouble with my Apple TV during sharing. I already have one MacBook Pro synced with the Apple TV and my MBP is using the "sharing" feature. However, during sharing while i'm watching a tv show it stops suddenly to "reload" i guess or "buffer" and it's annoying. Can't watch a show without being interupted several times during the show.
Is it my internet connection (mine is wireless WEP based), or is it my MBP or the Apple TV?
Thanks!

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
It may well be the network, you can test for this by starting your movie and pausing it for a few minutes before starting it again. If the problem goes away or doesn't re-occur until much further into the movie it would suggest your streaming is too slow.

Change one Apple ID (shared) to 2 seperate IDs, without losing stuff.  We have 2 ipads, mac pro, and  io phone 5.

You won't loose a thing as long as you also keep the original Apple ID. Apple does not transfer content from one Apple ID to another and Apple does not merge Apple IDs. The content acquired (bought or free) is forever associated with the Apple ID that acquired it. That is the only Apple ID that can redownload what is redownloadable and the only ID that can update anything.
You can comingle the content of multiple Apple IDs on the same computer or iOS device, so you can still share what you have, and create two new IDs whereby you keep content separate.
    Can you live with that?

  • Apple File  Sharing Permissions

I have a folder I'd like to share that is located on a Snow Leopard Machine. I'd like all the users to mount the folder over AFP (Apple file sharing, not Samba or FTP) but mount it as read-only. The folder itself has permissions on it that allow 1 admin user account read/write access, and Everyone else Read-only access. There is only 1 other user account on the machine. Let's call these "admin" and "user1". user1 should have read-only access to the folder. But when I connect to the Snow Leopard machine and mount the folder, it's read/write. The only way I can have the folder mounted using the user1 account and keep it read-only is to also set permissions for admin to be read-only.
Why would this be the case? Why is AFP granting read/write access to every user if the only user that should have it is admin?

Previously, you didn't have Read and execute permissions for the group, now you do.
Also, it didn't list any ACLs under the listing?
You can set ACLs with chmod, but you can also set them up with the sharing preferences. When you give other people access, it sets the appropriate ACLs. I would use the Sharing prefs set them.

  • Apple TV; sharing to my iPad and iPhone works but not to wife's iPad or iPhone?

My apologies, I have been searching FAQ's and couldn't find any resolution - it is late for me!
Purchased new Apple TV (2nd gen) last week and after solving slow internet issues set up all content to be "home shared" to my devices (iPad 2, iPhone 4) - GOOD!  Unfortunately nothing is being shared to my wife's iPad 2 or iPhone 3GS from the Apple TV but is being shared from the iMac to her devices- BAD!
We make all purchases on my iTunes account but also use my account for "home sharing" on my wife's devices, all settings APPEAR to be the same.  I did notice that in iTunes, under "Store", "my account", "manage my account" that only my iMac, iPad and iPhone show up as devices "In the Cloud".  If I click "manage devices" I don't have an option to add more devices (wife's iPad and iPhone).  How can I add them so they receive content from Apple TV as well?
The only work-around I have figured out is to download the purchases that were originally made on the Apple TV in my iMac iTunes and then they are pushed to my wife's devices - not very elegant. Is there a way to use iCloud to push purchases from Apple TV to all of our devices or am I doomed to do this every time something is bought on Apple TV?
Thank you for reading my tale of woe!!

Have you checked the Console logs to see if the system or iTunes might be reporting an issue with your equipment?
You can find Console in Applications>Utilities>Console.

  • Apple ID Sharing??

How could my live in boyfriends information get stored into my messages account on my MacBook without one of us adding it there? We have seperate Apple ID's and multiple apple devices. I have used his ID through I tunes and Apple TV on my MacBook, but neither of us have ever added it to the messages app.

You need to turn on home sharing on all your devices that you would like to share with.

  • Two apple ids sharing one iTunes  library is it possible?

Is it possible to have one library but for this to be shared with the family who will have separate IDs? Otherwise the only other way I can work out to download onto my daughters new ipad mini is to log in on our iD, download from the cloud then log out again, seems a bit of a phaff.

  • Same Apple ID Shared Text Messages iOS7

My father and I share and have shared the same Apple ID for years with no problems. However, when we updated our phones to the new iOS7 I began to recieve all of his text messages that he sends and all the messages that are sent to him. I'm guessing the problem is with us sharing an Apple ID. How do I solve this problem? Does he need to make and use another Apple ID or is there somewhere under our current Apple ID settings where I can solve this issue?

It is not text message but imessage.
To fix the issue, go to settings - message - Send&receive - uncheck or remove the apple id - on either devices.
Then whomever gets the new id go back to the same setting and input it.

  • How can I find the file of my Apple Device shared project?

I'm not sure if this a Final Cut Pro question or an iTunes question...
I shared a project from Final Cut Pro to the Apple Devices (so that I could watch the video on my Apple TV).  I found the video in Home Movies in iTunes, and actually watched it successfully through Apple TV.
But a day or two later, when I look for the video again in Home Movies in iTunes , I get this message: "The video [video title] could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?"
    Yes I would.
But I don't know where to look in Finder to find it?  Does anyone know where these video files actually go when we share them?  (Is this one of those cases where it's a hidden file, and I need to unhide them to see them?  If so, how do I do that?)

    The step by step process...
When my project is ready to go,
    1. I select File>Share>Apple Devices 1080p
    2. That opens an Apple Devices 1080p pop-up window
    3. I use the default setting (which says it adding to playlist "Library"
    4. after a few minutes I receive a notification of "share successful)
    5. I open itunes, and can watch the newly shared video on my computer screen (my other videos are listed too, but if I try to watch them I get the message "The video [video name] could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?")
    6. I find the video on Apple TV by going to my computer, my library, Home Movies
    7. I watch the video on Apple TV (some of the old videos are listed, others aren't)
    8. Soon thereafter, I return to iTunes on my computer, and now, when I try to watch the newly-shared video, I get the same error message I documented above.
    9. I return to the Apple TV and now I get an error message when I try to watch the video
    This is iTunes 11.1.0.50
    and FCP 10.1.4
Also, I'm editing videos with an external drive as my video source.  I don't know if that has anything to do with anything.
Also, also, per your suggestion, I looked at the Library icon>Show Package Contents>Project Name>Shared Items but couldn't find any of the video files that disappeared.  But I did run a quick test to watch all my steps, and I COULD find the file of that latest video.  So now I  know where to look.  That said, I'm going to leave the latest test video there, and see if it disappears soon too.

  • Parent - child two Apple IDs - sharing content but not emails

Just bought my son his first iPhone... he has had an iPod touch and has been using my AppleID to buy / download applications.
Now, will want him to have his own email address but don't want to buy the apps / music again...
Is there any problem in setting up a new AppleID and tagging his iPhone with that - will he lose access to all the content we have already bought him using my AppleID?
Is there an easier / better way to do this before I make the change?
    confused....

What you are proposing is very common. Most families share a common Apple ID for purchases through the iTunes and App Store so they can share access to the purchased apps and other media.
What I think you are asking is if you can set up a new Apple ID for iCloud services for your child so he can have his own email address. The answer is yes.
Set up an iCloud account for your child and enter the new Apple ID associated with that iCloud account in the iCloud settings section on his iPhone. He will now have his own unique Apple ID for use with all the iCloud services.
Also, on his iPhone, continue to use the old shared Apple ID in the iTunes Store app, the App Store app and for Home Sharing and he will be able to continue to share the same iTunes and App Store purchases as before.
If I'm mistaken with what your intent is please repost your question and try and clarify.

  • HT3819 Apple TV shared photo library

Using 1st generation Apple TV, with Windows 7 PC. Some of my photo albums appear on Apple TV under 'my photos' but other albums require me to open the 'shared library' to access them. The photos are all stored in 'My photos' library on the PC. How can i have all my photos accessible via the 'my photos' library on the Apple TV?

This has been driving me mad as well.
Having finally got round to properly sorting and organsing everything in iPhoto (I've been scanning hundreds of old slides, so that's forced me to organise myself!), it's been infuriating to see Apple TV (Gen 3 if that makes a difference) display them in a very odd order - based, I think, as others have said, on "modified" date, over which I have no control.
My work around is to change the "Sort" order in iPhoto.
iPhoto is setup with a series of Folders (one per year) and, in each folder, a handful of Albums.  There is always a "General" album for the year for most photos, plus one or two others for major holidays.  So, for example, I'll have a 2012 Folder, and in it, Albums called "General 2012", "London 2012".
    Makes sense to me anyway!
Within each Album, photos are sorted by date - if the date was not correct, or it makes sense to change the order, I've changed the date.  Which is where it all goes awry for Apple TV.
What I've now done is to batch-change the "Title" - which reflects the Album name, and, when I do this, selecting the "Append a Number to each photo" tick box.  So, the titles of each photo will be "London 2012 - 001", "London 2012 - 002" etc. I then change the "Sort Photos" order under the View menu to be "By Title" (it will have changed to "Manual" if you've moved photos around).  Nothing changes in iPhoto, as that's the order they were in anyway, but Apple TV now displays them in the correct order.
    This seems to be working.
I'll keep the date organised as well, as if that's wrong iPhoto slideshows go awry!
    Hope that helps somebody,
    Colin

  • Apple TV sharing from IMAC 20 inch (2008)

is there a tutorial on how to share from my 2008 iMac to a phillips hd tv using apple tv?

Thanks Brian, Internet sharing is the term used in my iMac settings for using the iMac as a Wi-Fi network, we use this for iPhones, laptops etc as we dont have a wireless router. Did buy a wireless router but couldn't get it to work so thought we'd just keep using the iMac as it worked fine, until now. Apple TV connected to this network sucessfully for watching movies etc but not for Home Sharing so I wanted to find out if this was normal.
I have just spoken to Apple who let me know that this is indeed normal and that this type of network will work for movies etc but not for Home Sharing. So as you say will need to get a wireless router that works, or connect via ethernet (I didn't realise this was possible, but can see it now after going back to the little black manual)
Thanks Brian, thanks Winston, thanks Apple.

  • Apple File Sharing very slow with Mountain Lion

I've noticed since upgrading to 10.8 the transfer speeds over a LAN via AFP (File Sharing) are VERY slow.. in some instances.  Based on the behaviour i'm guessing it has something to do with the amount of items.
    for instance:
A folder that contains approx 122mb worth of 1500 small files takes me about 50 seconds to transfer while a long audio recording with a greater filesize of 125mb takes only 11 seconds.
using SCP from the command line the same 122mb folder took only 19 seconds while the audio took 10 seconds.
after performing the same operations on a computer running 10.6 I can deduce that the problem is on the receiving end.  Audio file transfer times were the same, however the same folder of items took only 27 seconds when it was transferred to a computer running 10.6 regardless of which OS the computer sending the file was running.
apparently handling a greater number of files increases transfer time for both methods but AFP is painfully slow with 10.8 on the receiving end.
    any thoughts or suggestions?
I've read a couple threads about people having trouble with Time Machine running slowly.. i wonder if this is related.

Same problem here. I just upgraded from Lion to Mountain Lion. I only got 19 GB of space, but Time Machine wants 10 hours, whereas in OSX Lion a full backup would take just under an hour, and incremental updates were lightning fast.
I even sat it up to do it overnight, but on 8 hours it was only half way through only 10 GB. I can't live with that in the future.
Im trying to backup on a SD card which seems to work very good in Lion. Im on a 2012 Macbook Air using a SSD.
My bite of the apple has been somewhat sour. I tried reformatting the SD card, well knowing that I would lose old backups. But still the backup is extremely slow. Now I can't install Lion or Mountain Lion from scratch without having to wait 10 hours for TM backup or installing tons of applications and settings again. Bummer. I'm never going to early adobt a OSX upgrade again.

As randers4 says, use separate AppleIDs for iCloud and iMessage accounts.  You cannot "share iCloud" and have separate mail, messaging and facetime.  To get those, you need to use separate AppleIDs to each create your own iCloud account and your own iMessage account.
You can share apps and other purchased content by having a common AppleID used in the iTunes and App store.

How do I set up iCloud with multiple apple Id's?

    Welcome to the Apple community.
If you log into iCloud using different ID's on different devices, they will work entirely independently of each other. Is this what you want, if not, please explain what it is you are trying to achieve..
