Apple TV Stutters and Pauses on Streaming Playback

I have had an Apple TV for 3 weeks and it has stuttered and paused on playback of movie trailers, podcasts, and all previews almost continuously. I have had our home broadband improved, but seen no ATV improvement. ATV starts playing SD trailers quickly, but takes an age to play anything HD.
I have found the ATV's performance from day one to be very frustrating, and would like it to do what it says on the box, which is work seamlessly. I spoke to Apple support, and did everything that asked, including factory reset, but nothing has changed.
I just wanted to ask whether my experience of stuttering, pausing and long loading times is the common ATV experience? If it is then this box needs no more perseverance and I will wait for an iteration that works as advertised. If not, then this box will be exchanged on Saturday and I will try again.
I have a 5 Meg ADSL broadband line connected to Airport Extreme. I have plugged ATV into Ethernet and there is no change.

Thanks for your replies. I have an 8 Meg line that hits about 5 Meg. I have worked with the ISP (TalkTalk), and they have upgraded my line. I have tried to use ATV both day and night, and the service remains the same.
Am I right in understanding that none of you get the stuttering and pausing that I am talking about? I like ATV, but will be frustrated with it if its current performance continues.
i believe TalkTalk to be one of the more heavy throttlers (although they will never admit it to you in any way).
i don't experience any stuttering or pausing.
to rule out your WIFI, you could connect the appletv to your router via ethernet. if the problem goes away then you know it's your WIFI network causing the issue. if the problem stays then the finger is pointed at your ISP.
edit - i see you have already tried ethernet.
i assume that content that has been synced to your appletv (movies, tv shows, music etc) does not suffer from the pausing or stuttering ?

  • Apple Keynotes stuttering and choppy

    Hey everyone,
This applies to both Windows XP and Mac versions of Quicktime, as I have tested this on both machines. For some reason, I can't watch keynotes anymore at all. I watched the one where Steve introduced the iSight built in to iMacs and the Photo Booth software fine on XP with quicktime. But suddenly past that, I have run into stuttering and AV sync issues that make it impossible to watch. This being said, my girlfriend recently bought a 24" iMac and I also tried to watch it on that - and ran into the same problems. On my XP machine, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times, both newer and older versions. I also tried the Safe Mode, non-directx mode and that didn't work. I don't know what to do. Streaming video otherwise works fine. Movie Trailers and other streams work fine.
    Please help! --Jeff

Yes, I have the exact same issue and it is so effing annoying. I wish I would have just stuck with my second-generation Apple TV when I upgraded in October 2013. I've been having this problem ever since upgrading to the third-generation AppleTV, and I can't believe Apple hasn't done anything to fix it.  I am an avid Apple fan, and have all things apple in my home… But this really ****** me off!

  • AAC audio causes stuttering in live video stream playback

I am using the Spark VideoDisplay component and setting the mx_internal bufferTime to 0.  (videoDisplay.mx_internal::videoPlayer.bufferTime = 0)  I am doing this because I need to have the absolute minimum delay in the live video stream.  I am broadcasting video files as a live stream using ffmpeg, through Red5, then to the client.  ffmpeg is not re-encoding the video or audio.  I am using h.264 video format.  I have tried encoding videos using Adobe Media Encoder and ffmpeg.
When I have a video stream only and no audio stream this works fine, but when I have an AAC audio channel with the video, I frequently see the video jitter badly.  It looks like the video is quickly going forward and back a few frames.  When this problem occurs it will go on for some time and sometimes eventualy starts playing normal.  When the video is playing normally the audio sounds fine.  When I play the videos in a regular media player (like VLC) they play and sound fine.  Also if I use an mp3 audio channel I don't see the jittering
Does anyone have any idea what the cause of this problem might be or how it can be resolved?

Ah, yes, I am not serving high-def video myself. H264 is probably better, but my understanding is that you need hardware acceleration to get good performance from it (again, not an expert on the topic, that's just what my understanding has been...)
This document [pdf] may have some usefull info on choosing an optimal encoding for your needs.

  • Stuttering and Out of Sync Playback in Logic Pro X

I'm having a problem with my playback.
About 1 of every 4 times I play back audio, Logic experiences stuttering; portions glitch up and the output cuts in and out.
Then the project plays out of sync for a few seconds before the system recovers.
This is happening on very simple scratch projects with 4 tracks or less, and about once every 4 times I hit play (which is unacceptable in my mind).
It also happens during recording which is very frustrating.
All my drivers are up to date, I've used disk utility to clean my system and repair permissions, and I have a very fast and current computer.
My projects are on my internal drive, and set at 96khz 24-bit; but again, these are very simple tracks running off of a "blazing fast" PCIE solid-state drive.
I'm beginning to think this is a hardware problem, as I experience pops and clicks when I first play any audio on any app after the system has been idle.  The cut out effect also occurs with iTunes once in a blue moon.
    Thoughts?

What is Logic's I/O Buffer set at?
Not sure what you're using for an audio Interface but 96kHz is overkill. Unless you have a pristine listening room, many $$$ worth of monitor speakers and amplifier...  the best mics, instruments, yes in can make a difference with soft instruments + a lot of effects but even then. I hope you have a high end audio interface otherwise it's pointless and unnecessarily hard on your system. Also, recent versions of OSX do a lot of writing to the drive. What make is the solid state drive, there is a known issue with some recent Samsung drives.
Logic does better running loops/recording/playback from a separate drive although it normally should be able to handle a few tracks. Are you running any applications in the background? If so close them.

  • Netflix stuttering and pauses...

I finally resolved my in ability to play Netflix videos and after updating to the latest Netflix player I got so many pauses and loss of audio/video sync that I would have to restart a video many times to watch the entire thing. I started looking around and found out that I still had Flash Player 10 on my system. I went to the regular Lenovo market and tried to update it but there was no Update or download button. Just OPEN. I then went to the Android Market web site and downloaded Flash Player 11. Installed it and now have a much improved Netflix experience. I still have a few problems but only a fraction of what I was having with Flash 10. Just thought I would post this in case anyone else was having problems.

Wildman my Droids do this if there not connected to Wi-Fi all the time there was one exception when i was in the big city they seem not to do the stuttering or buffering as bad but they still had there little moments.  an i was reading the Youtube post in the Market an there were several that were having issues after the recent update with Youtube so i havent updated my droids yet. • Why do netflix and u tube stream ok but apple movies have a error or download time is four plus hours

I have a Apple TV 2 and it will stream netflix, music,u tube ok but when I purchace a movie from apple it gives a error message saying to try later or sometimes will start to download but tells me the time will be 4 plus hours.
    Router is a g
It seems everything from apple is slow even the mobile me sight which i had to discontinue using

Unless you have EE 4G service the UK 3G networks are the base of your problem - they are just far to variable in download and streaming speeds.
Add to the fact that use can/will eat into your Data usage !
ITunes Match as a service is pretty experimental at best over 3G and really i think so long as you have a 32GB or larger iOS device sync'ing via iTunes on a PC/Mac remains the best way to transfer music.
Remember even with iTune Match your music is STILL ON your own PC/Mac HDD !
Usng the devices tab in iTunes you can customize each differing identified iOS device and load as you please.
When we have a competitively priced stable and extensive LTE network in the UK then reconsider Match at that point.

  • Advice on Apple TV Pausing During Streaming (Apple Remote App too)

With all the talk and excitement of the new Apple TV, I'm not sure if this problem applies. I'm not sure if the new Apple TV streams movies like the old one did.
Regardless, I have had some difficulty with my 40GB Apple TV that I finally figured out after months. I'll describe my network, describe the problem and solution, and why that solution works.
    1. My network.
    I have:
an iMac connected wirelessly to an Airport Extreme
a Western Digital hard drive connected via ethernet to my Extreme. My movie library is here
an newer airport express (N) connected to my stereo on the main floor
an older airport express (G) connected in the basement with my XBOX connected to it via ethernet
an Apple TV in the basement.
    2. The problem
When I'm streaming movies, it often works just fine. However, sometimes, during a movie, the playback pauses as if Apple TV needs to re-cache the movie or something. It will pause for about 10 seconds or so then keep playing. When it starts to play again, the movie jumps forward the 10 seconds to the current playing point. This then works for anywhere from another 30 seconds to several minutes. When this pausing occurs, if you click the Apple remote to bring up the status bar, you can see the timeline of the movie continue to move along. Then, other times, the whole thing will somehow cure itself and start working again.
Unrelated but later found to be related problem with Apple remote on iPod touch
Sometimes, trying to connect to my iTunes library, it couldn't connect and I'd get the message that my firewall is getting in the way. You'll see as it turns out, this isn't the problem.
    How I found the solution
When this pausing occured, I would unplug the Airport Express in the basement. This is the one the XBOX is connected to. After a couple of seconds, I'd plug it back in. On the TV screen, it would revert back to the movie list and show that there were no movies to play. Then, after a couple of seconds, my movie list would reappear. I'd restart my movie and it would work just fine.
    Here's what was happening
Somehow, I configured my Airport Express router in the basement to be an extention of the network The problem is that the Express in the basement was G speed and not N speed (I think that was the problem). Sometimes, Apple TV would connect to the Express router in the basement rather than my Airport Extreme router upstairs. When this happened, the pausing during streaming would occur. This also makes sense now that the movie list would briefly disappear when I'd unplug my Airport Express in the basement. The connection would be lost but then a few seconds later, Apple TV would find Airport Extreme and reconnect. Then it would work perfectly.
I also noticed two separate networks coming up when I did a network scan. I would fire up my WIndows laptop and do a network search. I would get two separate instances of 'Mynet'. One would be N speed and the other would be G speed. This now also makes sense since one of them was my Express and the other was my Extreme.
    The solution
I did two things. I swapped the two Express routers so I had the N speed router in the basement connected to the XBOX. I also configured the network so it was 'all the same network'. Now, when I do a network scan on my Windows laptop, I no longer get the two separate instances of 'Mynet' coming up.
Since then, I have never had a problem streaming movies nor have I had a problem with my Apple Remote app on my iPod Touch.

    I'm having similar problem.
    My set up:
iTunes running on my MacBook C2D, 2GB RAM
Movie contents are in an external USB2.0 HDD (7200rpm) attached to Airport Extreme (802.11n)
Typical movie content is mp4 file with 1.8mbps bitrate.
When my MB is completely idling state, ATV gets data w/o pausing.
When MB is doing some task (web browsing, etc), no problem.
When iTunes starts downloading some video podcasts (to MB, not syncing to ATV).... the movie streamed to ATV gets paused and gets into the same state as gjbonnington described.
    Any idea how to solve??

  • ITunes Stream Stuttering and Crackling Noises (Temporary Work Around Option

Note: If you don’t take the time from your busy schedule to address these suggestions being provided in this and future upcoming series, then by all mean continue with what you were doing before and continue to experience the frustrations and problems. The series is not meant to be a cure-all for the problems you are having. But the information will go a long way toward correcting and improving a lot of issues that you may be having with your system. Think About It !!!!!!!!!!
I listen to the radio a lot using the iTunes player as well as listen to music that I have transferred to the player. When a problem occurs it aggravates me to no end especially if it is occurring when I am try to relax to my music. At times I am also experiencing the stuttering and crackling issues in the 7.0 update that has been recently released. The following information can be useful in temporarily correcting this problem until Apple comes up with a patch to resolve this issue. If you choose to proceed with implementing this information then you assume any liability that may occur during your attempts at using and applying this information. This information has so far suited any needs that I may or am currently having to date personally.
1)Quick Time Preferences – In the Quick Time Preferences\Audio tab check to make sure that the settings are at the default level. Your platform may reflect a different khz Rate. On my platform my default level will be the following:
    Rate: 44.1 khz
    Size: 16 bit
    Channels: Stereo (L R)
When I listen to my music I like a good quality stereo sound so I have my audio sound routed from my laptop to my CD or Video jacks in the back of my stereo. Stereo System: Pioneer SX 251R Receiver. External Speakers: 2 - 8 ohm Yamaha.
Make sure the Safe Mode box is unchecked. Close the Quick Time player. Now, when you begin experiencing the stutter problem there are two immediate steps that you can try to correct the problem:
1)Stop the stream or the music that you are listening too and restart the service each time that the event occurs, (In my case the events that have been occurring has not been consistent when they do occur. Close monitoring in place on all connection ports. Running Snap In’s deployed: IPSec Monitor/MMC Console– Currently monitoring IKE and IPSec Statistics for any changes. To run this snap in properly the Event Monitor must be in the running state and actively logging events in the Administrative\Event Viewer Folder) I will also be configuring Dr Watson to generate a Stack and Dump file log to the desk top in the event of an unexpected occurrence. or,
2)If that does not correct the problem then try the following: Go to the My Computer folder and open it up. When you have done so, Right click the Local Disk and enter the Properties section. When the Local Disk Properties box comes up, enter the Tools tab, in the Error Checking section, place a check mark in the “Automatically Fix System Errors” and click start\yes. Back out of that and close all running programs including firewall in the tray next to your clock and reboot the system.
Once you have rebooted run the Disk Cleanup utility and the Disk Defragmenter utility. While we are using the Disk Defragmenter lets take an extra step to insure that we defragging the hard drive volumes as much as possible. Click on the analyze button a second time. If there are any entries in the box highlight the first entry and run the Defrag utility a second time.
Tip! If you would get in the habit of running defrag process regularly on a daily basis it will help improve the overall baseline performance of your machine.
Last Step: Open your player and try again.
If you are still experiencing the problem and it hasn’t leveled out to your satisfaction then there are two additional steps that I have personally used or am currently using that may help with your issues. The steps will involve installing a small batch file program and a hot fix patch.
User Profile Hive Cleanup Service– (Batch Program) Open your Browser and type in the following address: www.microsft.com once the page has loaded look for the search bar in the upper right hand corner of the page. In the search bar type in the following: “User Profile Hive Cleanup Service”. Once the search result page comes up click on the first result to bring up the proper download page. Before you can use this batch program you will be required to go through a short validation process before you can download the program. The validation process is to ensure that you are running a genuine windows platform.
    Overview
The User Profile Hive Cleanup service helps to ensure user sessions are completely terminated when a user logs off. System processes and applications occasionally maintain connections to registry keys in the user profile after a user logs off. In those cases the user session is prevented from completely ending. This can result in problems when using Roaming User Profiles in a server environment or when using locked profiles as implemented through the Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP.
On Windows 2000 you can benefit from this service if the application event log shows event id 1000 where the message text indicates that the profile is not unloading and that the error is "Access is denied". On Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 either event ids 1517 and 1524 indicate the same profile unload problem.
To accomplish this the service monitors for logged off users that still have registry hives loaded. When that happens the service determines which application have handles opened to the hives and releases them. It logs the application name and what registry keys were left open. After this the system finishes unloading the profile.
Once you have downloaded and installed the batch file close all running programs and reboot. Now, ‘This is important”, lets determine if the batch file is properly running after installation. Go to Start\Help and Support. Once the Help and Support Center comes up click on the following link: “Use tools to view your computer information and diagnose problems” under the “Pick a task” section. Once the page has been loaded in the left hand pane click on the “Advanced System Information” link. Once that page has been loaded click on the following link: View detailed system information (Msinfo32.exe).
Once the System Information box is loaded look in the left pane and open the Software Environment Tree and click on the following link: Windows Error Reporting. If the batch program is properly running you should see the following entry: “User profile hive cleanup service version 1.6.30.0 started successfully
&#x00a”. The ending symbols may be different on your platform.
Now, we want to go to another location in your system to verify this entry and that this service is properly working again. Pull up your “Control Panel” and enter the “Administrative Tools” folder. Once there enter the “Event Viewer” folder. Then enter the “Application Folder”. If the service is properly working the following entry will be logged: User profile hive cleanup service version 1.6.30.0 started successfully, Event ID 1001. If for some reason this program is not functioning properly a different error code other then the Event Id 1001 will be generated and logged in this folder. Also if one is generated you will want to verify if it’s a genuine error. To do this you need to go back into the help and support center Advanced System Information link and click on the following link: “View the error log”. If anything goes wrong a corresponding general entry that was logged in the Event Viewer will be logged in this link verifying that a problem had occurred. All of the information in the logs will be useful in your trouble shooting efforts. To date I have not had any measurable conflicts to occur while using this batch program to date. Closing Overview: when this program engages it will target itself at the Kernel System only at shutdown and startup. A corresponding entry will be made in the folders that I have described above stating that the program had started or failed.
System Restore Feature and USB Device’s – Event Viewer\System and Application Folders\Event ID SR 1 (Hot Fix Patch) – I have noticed that some folks are loading and unloading iTunes in attempt to correct problems. Also, I see by the forum board that a lot of folks are having a lot of problems with their iPods. Think about this for a moment, iPods will have their own unique set of drivers to operate from. I am going to attempt to explain an experience that occurred with me last year on this issue. When working with USB Devices it is important to keep your eyes on the Event Viewer folders for the following event id being logged: Event ID SR 1. This is especially true if you are using your System Restore Feature. The main folders that you want to keep your eyes on are the “System\Application” folders.
I have not witnessed any specific Software Applications generating this code in general at this point in time. But when it comes to Software and USB Devices I have personally experienced a situation that did cause a SR 1 entry last year. Example: My wife has Sevier medical problems. When we travel I keep a USB Flash Drive on my key chain with her medical information installed in case of an emergence. The Medic Alert E-Health Key was a new device that came out that had bugs that needed resolved just as with iTunes 7.0. The short of the story is that the flash drive was conflicting with the System Restore Feature, which led to additional problems such as conflicts in the Add/Remove Utility. I could not properly unload the Uninstall .Dll files when trying to uninstall the flash drive itself using the Add/Remove Utility. During a conversation with a Microsoft Support tech I was informed that other unloading issues had also been identified in the Add/Remove Utility. I could be wrong but I think there is a patch available that would help with unloading issues while using the Add/Remove Utility. To keep an eye on any possible loading/unloading issues that I may have while using the Add/Remove Utility, I use the following program to determine if there any issue’s that I need to deal with: (30 Day Trial Program-Fully Functional)
    http://www.mikasalonen.com/remove/?remove40
Program Name: Remove 4.0. All of the information you need to know about this program will be summarized in the provided link. If anything: USE IT !!!!
NOTE: This SR 1 patch is only a temporary hot fix. They are suggesting that we wait until the next Windows XP service pack release that contains the hot fix.
    Article Id : 888402
    Last Review : June 01, 2006
    Revision : 1.5
Also keep this in mind. The only time that you want to become concerned about the SR 1 issue is when you notice an increase in the number of SR 1 entries in Event viewer logs. If you are logging two (2) or more events then I would begin investigating the problem. Again, In my case the System Restore Feature was identified as the initial cause of conflict when the conflict first occurred when loading the USB Flash Drivers. So, if you suddenly notice this entry in the Event Viewer then you can pretty much bet that you are experiencing a USB issue that is conflicting with the System Restore Feature. But there is a Hot Fix available to temporarily resolve this issue as I have stated. Go back to the Microsoft link that was provided. When the page loads, in the search bar in the upper right hand corner of the page type in the following KB 888402. Be Advised – if you have to resort to this measure you will have to contact the Microsoft Support Team directly by phone to receive this patch.
When you talk to the tech you will need to provide the following information: A brief description if the Event being generated in the Event Viewer as well as a brief description of the problem that you are having. Once the tech has verified the information he/she will e-mail the hot fix to you in a zip folder if I’m not mistaken.
    System and Third Party Drivers
Drivers can be another source of conflict that can have a direct impact on how your system operates. I have already given you an example of this in the System Restore/USB Devices section. They can also cause unexpected stability issues. In addition to that malicious Root Kits and Trojans can download drivers on your hard drive without your knowledge further complicating matters. So, before I close this information out let me show you how we can quickly gather and display a listing of all drivers that are currently installed on you hard drive by using a very simple program. (This program will be a 15-day Trial program).
    Program Name: My Drivers 3.11
With this program you will be able filter out all preinstalled drivers that came with the system at the time of purchase, thus exposing the remaining Third Party drivers and as well as the Unknowns. If you know what your doing I would take this time now and disable the drive(s) in question if removal procedures are deemed necessary once you have obtained the driver listing. My overall objective with this program is to immediately determine if there is anything out of the norm with the drivers overall.
A download link is unavailable at this time. The web site appears to be under construction at this time.
As a final step on this issue I suggest keeping an eye on the Device Manager for any sudden “Yellow Warning Symbols” appearing within the Device Manager Tree Structure.
Print this information off and us it as a reference point. Any new helpful hints that I can think of will be posted as soon as I can squeeze the time in.

It does have to restart twice..I guess once to download and and nother to apply.

Thanks, Winston C, I've actually tried everything you suggested. I'm thinking now that the Home Sharing problem likely is related to Bonjour--I've seen several people mention this with similar (but not identical) problems. The solution that seems to work for some people is to uninstall and reinstall Bonjour. Frankly, I don't want to go through the trouble given that the iOS 7 release is imminent.
One thing that I haven't tried is resetting the ATV to factory settings. I'll give that whirl.
    Thanks for your advice!

The music icon will only access your purchased music. You need to go to the computer icon. It must be on and running iTunes, and home-sharing enabled in order for it to be accessible to Apple TV
