Apple TV Take 2: No movies for Canadians

So I got the update but there is absolutely no movie content for Canadians. What gives? It would have been great if Apple made this "important" information available weeks ago. I would never have purchased this thing. I am very unimpressed with the new features. Sure, connect to .mac but it would be nice if I could see my password protected galleries, considering they are all protected so nothing shows up!!!!!!

I was excited about the rental feature too. Then I was viewing apple.ca and noticed that the Apple TV section didn't mention Movie Rentals (still doesn't). I then read, http://www.g4techtv.ca/technews/GG/GG20080121macworld.shtml that rentals for Canada and other countries will roll out later this year.
I still purchased. I wanted it mainly for the photo viewing and streaming our home movies. I would like to see the more options to view photo galleries.
I'm still very pleased with the device and I'm anxious to see how the software evolves.

only the U.S store has movies and tv shows not canadian, i really wanna download tv shows.
i dont have a credit card in the U.S so im wondering how us canadians can buy tv shows?

Hi,
In order to buy from a certain country's iTMS, you do need
either: a CC with a billing address in that country
or: an address in that country plus a prepaid card/gift voucher issued by iTMS in that country.
If you don't meet one of this conditions, there is no solution for you.

Apple TV Take 2 My Movies

I downloaded the recent update for appletv and the movies are all very cool and all, but now I don't know how to install movies onto my movies section. I used to do it through ITunes, but now when I click on my appletv link all I get is a tab for summary and a tab for photos. I can stream movies onto it just fine, but that tends to be a bit choppy when I'm doing other things, so I sometimes like to transfer the movies over wholely to the appletv harddrive. Can anyone help me figure this out?

Didn't work. I removed the appletv by turning off streaming reset itunes and the apple tv, went into apple tv and through settings added a shared ITunes library. I've got the same problem. What am I missing?

Logically, because unlike you I do not keep my cellular data on at all times as I do not have an unlimited data plan. I only turn on cellular data when I am on the go and I do not have access to a wifi network. Therefore my need for a button in control center that turns on cellular data. And this would be very usefull to other iPhone users outside the US and Canada, where unlimited cellular data plans are not so affordable.

When I select a netflix movie on my iPad and push it to my apple TV, why doesn't the Apple TV take over the streaming, so that I can then use my iPad for other things?

Why can't the apple TV take over the heavy work at this point? I'd like to be able to use my iPad as more of a remote with an awesome interface for the apple TV. The netflix app on iPad is great, and the easiest way to browse movies, and pushing them to the apple TV is fantastic, but once the movie starts, I want to use my iPad for other things!!! Can this be put on the "to do" list for devs?

Have you tried the Remote app on iPhone/iPad to control AppleTV, do searches etc? Should be easier than the remote alone and this does not involve Airplay.
Please note, only users read/comment here - your idea is quite sensible in my view (maybe have a 'Continue viewing on AppleTV' option or something. I doubt this would be high on Apple's roadmap but send them feedback here:

Welcome to the Apple community.
One of the main reasons this occurs is because Netflix uses a feature called adaptive quality and iTunes uses a fixed quality. Netflix is able to reduce its quality to such an extent when it detects that you have a poor Internet connection that the data rate of the movie is as low as 0.5 Mb per second, on the other hand if you have chosen to view an HD movie from iTunes U have chosen a movie with a data rate as high as 5 Mb per second.

Apple TV 2nd Generation slow streaming for Movies from my iTunes

Just taken delivery of a 2nd Generation AppleTV. Everything works but when selecting a movie from my iTunes library it takes a very, very long time before it plays. I can fast forward and reverse but cannot play. Sometimes it takes 15 to 20 minutes before I can play it. Is there anything I can do to improve this? I could go and get the DVD and play it in my DVD player much faster than this.

I have the same problem with mine: the Apple TV 2 is so slow to start streaming movies I initially thought it wasn't working at all. I'd select a movie, and after many minutes of no result I'd cancel and try another. Turns out it's just so slow I though it wasn't functional.
My setup: movies on iMac (current model 27" i7, OS X 10.6.5), stock internal drive, Airport Express running 7.4.2 in 201.11n only mode 2.4 GHz), no other computers or devices on the network.
I tried swapping in a wired router and connected everything via Ethernet, but it made no difference.
Also tried selecting a movie, waiting the incredibly long time for it to start streaming, and then cancelling out and starting all over with the same movie (to see if it caches). The problem persists.
I wondered if it was the size of my movie library. I have about 230 movies in iTunes. So I tried leaving the Apple TV in "browse your movies" mode overnight to see if it needed time to prefetch things from the movie library. That didn't work either.
I've tried a couple dozen movies from various sources (home movie from iMovie, DVD ripped by Handbrake using both "Apple TV" and "Apple Universal" settings, and Ripit), without any change. I'm going to try the many-chapters idea and made a movie with tons of chapters to see if that helps (will report back).

Besides these problems, there is the battery, which was bad got worse, she is not lasting more than 10 hours, even without using the phone.
Sometimes it even seems that the problem was solved, but my joy did not last long after I celebrate all the problems return, is incredible ...

Takes a long time for Apple logo to show up on boot up

My 13" mpb early 2011 takes a long time for the Apple logo to show up... Is there a way to fix this? (It should show up within 2 seconds after the initial chime)
I have Win7 installed, could it be that? Since it might be detecting which partition to boot up with.

Check login items ...
Remove all items from System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items
Same for HD > Library > StartupItems
Then restart your Mac to test.
Not necessarily a Windows issue.

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...
