Apple TV, Time Capsule, and my epic degeneration into madness...

Hey looking for some help...
So I've been holding off on updating the Apple TV I got for Christmas last year since reading about people's update woes. Seemed to be fixed so I went ahead and tried to update yesterday (11-18-13). The black screen came up saying it would take hours but it took about 15 minutes then right before the install stage it said can't update try again later. Oh well whatever right so I went to watch Netflix and it said it couldn't access Netflix at all. The. It said I needed to turn on home sharing to access files, I turned it off and then back on on my MacBook Pro and it wouldn't connect to that either. So I tried to update again and right away it couldn't connect to the store. Now I just got a time capsule last week and everything else is running fine off from it. Two iPhone 5's a brand new MacBook Air, a MacBook pro, our printer, and an iPad, so I don't think that's the issue. However after being upset and letting it fester I tried to go I to the apple menu and do a restore on the Apple TV, it could connect to restore, so I reset all the settings back to factory and it recognizes that there is a wireless network the name pops up but when chosen it asks me to sign in to the iTunes Store and can't connect. I tried to test the network and it said it couldn't run tests. This is affecting my netflixing ability for certain. Does anyone out there have some idea what to do?  Thank you!!
MacBook Pro (13-inch Late 2011), iOS 7.0.3

Sounds like the update failed and nerfed it.
You will need a micro-USB cable but try restoring via iTunes.
Follow the steps in the If your Apple TV still does not respond or if you were unable to follow the above steps section of this article.
Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation): Restoring your Apple TV
This will download and reinstall iOS.
That will get you up to date and hopefully resolve the issue.

  • Apple TV, Time Capsule and an old G4 MDD...

So I have a simple questions but can't find an answer elsewhere...so here goes:
I have the following devices I'm trying to get to work together:
    • 2nd Gen Apple TV
    • 1st Generation Time Capsule (802.11n version)
    • A dual 867mhz PowerPC G4 MDD (Mirror Door Drive)
    • OS X 10.5.8 (the highest I can go without Intel chip)
    • iTunes 10.3.1 (55) - Latest Version
    • Airport Card in my G4 computer (I'm sure it's not 802.11n)
What I'm trying to accomplish, but can't:
•I wanted to use the old G4 as a media server to run Apple TV on to our TV. Apple TV recognizes all of my movies and music on the G4 Tower but takes FOREVER to load anything up. It is useless to use wirelessly.
    Can I do the following:
    1. Connect  my G4 tower directly up to the Time Capsule via Ethernet and stream content to Apple TV that way? If I can cut out the slower connection from my G4 Tower to the Time Capsule, the content might load faster. Surely Ethernet would be much faster.
    Is any of this possible?
    Thanks for your help.
    Dominic

Yes I'd say that was possible, ethernet is always the preferred option, I'd only use wifi when ethernet is not practical.

  • Apple TV Inference with Time Capsule and Airport express?

I have recently bought an Apple TV 2, which seem to be working fine, however since installing it on my wireless network both my Time Capsule and Airport Express can't be found. Following some fault finding it seems that when I unplug the Apple TV I can reconfingure the TC and AE.
The TC and AE are configured to join my existing network....and have happy sat there for a few years.
I would really welcome any ideas.
    Thanks
    R

    Welcome to the discussions!
It sounds like you have the basic configuration covered correctly.
You might want to check some settings on the TC:
Wireless Mode would be create a wireless network
"Allow this network to be extended" should be checked
The AX should be set to "extend a wireless network"
The "allow wireless clients" box should be checked
In this configuration, the ethernet port on the AX is active so things should work.
A minor point...Although the TC is a dual band device, the AirPort Express is not. Can you make sure that that the Express is connecting to the "main" network on your TC? The "guest" network cannot be "extended".
If you place your laptop close to the Express and hold down the option key while you click on the AirPort icon, some connection information will be displayed. The MAC address of the device that the laptop is connecting to will be indicated. Make sure that that this is the MAC address of the AX, and not the TC.
Another note...If you have not changed the default "main" network, the radio mode is broadcasting 802.11n only at 5 GHz. These higher frequencies are absorbed by walls, ceilings and any obstructions much more quickly than 2.4 GHz signals. So, if you AX is some distance away, you may not be receiving a strong signal for the device at that location.
If you have a signal strength utility on your laptop (the "bars" at the top of the screen are not a very good indicator of actual signal strength), turn off the AX and take a reading to see what kind of signal the Express is receiving where it is located.
Please post back with your results.

  • Time Capsule and Apple TV

Question 1. I know apple tv can not directly stream from time capsule, but if I have my iTunes library stored on my time capsule can it be streamed via my MacBook pro to apple tv?
Question 2. If I connect time capsule and apple tv to my Wifi modem via Ethernet will it be the fastest option for streaming?

but if I have my iTunes library stored on my time capsule can it be streamed via my MacBook pro to apple tv?
Yes. But, if you move your iTunes library to the Time Capsule drive, have you thought about a possibly troubling fact?..... Your "original" library is now on the Time Capsule drive......and you have no backup when...not if...the Time Capsule drive has a problem.
In other words, if you move the iTunes library to the Time Capsule, how will you backup that important data?
A better plan might be to add an external FireWire or USB drive and connect that directly to your MacBook Pro. Move the iTunes library to the external drive. Then Time Machine will backup your MacBook and the external drive.
Then you have "originals" on one drive....and backups on another, so your data is safe when a drive acts up.
Question 2. If I connect time capsule and apple tv to my Wifi modem via Ethernet will it be the fastest option for streaming?
Yes, probably at least 3-5 times faster than wireless.

  • Time Capsule and Apple Tv Question regarding iTunes

(Sorry if this has been asked) I wanted to know if you could set up the time capsule as basically a centralized itunes server and connect to it from multiple apple tv's at the same time to stream music to different rooms( 3 rooms at most) if not will this work one stream at a time?

If you go into File, Preferences, and click ADVANCED, you will see a checkbox that says
Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library.
    You want to uncheck this.
If you have your library on an external drive, and you want to keep the files there, you uncheck that box and it wont copy the files to your hard drive, just link to them.
In my case, I had my iTunes library on my Macbook. I copied all 20g over to my Time Capsule by dragging the folder in it's entirety to the TC. Then on my Macbook pro i clicked the startup icon and held down OPTION. This asked if I cwanted to create a new library or open another. I chose open another, navigated to the Time Capsule, and it worked perfectly.
THere will of course now be syncing issues between my music. I use my Macbook as my purchase and portable library, so I will now have to either completely copy the directory once a day/week etc or i'll have to export any new songs/music i buy from iTunes to a disc and then import into the new library. Also wont keep my play lists in sync. But that's a smallish issue for ME.

  • I have a 2T apple time capsule and router. I bought a Hauppauge WinTV extender which allows regular TV to be broadcasted on a PC. The program allows streaming to a Mac or iPad, iPhone, etc. I need to open a port on the router to allow this to work.

I have a 2T apple time capsule and router. I bought a Hauppauge Win TV extender which allows TV to be broadcasted on a PC. The program allows for the TV to be streamed on a Mac, Iphone, Ipad. I need to access the router set up options to open a port on the router to allow this program to stream the TV to the Mac and Iphone. I do not know how to access the apple time capsule router to change the settings to open a port on the router. help please.

Firstly you do not need to open ports to stream locally.. there is no port block in local LAN.. only WAN to LAN. So there is a good chance it is not needed at all..
Opening ports on the TC I strongly recommend a v5 airport utility.. you can download one for windows if you don't have a Mac.. iOS version of the utility I am not sure but it will not work to do complex things.
In the v5 utility go to the NAT area, and click on port mappings.
Sorry I don't have a screen shot at the moment of the actual mapping page.. but simply put the IP of the device you want opened and the port.
There are plenty of posts with this info if you google.
But as noted.. this is purely WAN to LAN.. nothing else.

  • I bought a 3tb Time Capsule and would like to stream movie from it to my Samsung Smart TV.  Do I need Apple TV or Another App?

I bought a 3tb Time Capsule and would like to stream movies from it to my Samsung Smart TV.  Do I need Apple TV or Another App?

TC is not a media device.. it has no media smarts at all.
And Apple TV is not a media player .. it is strictly a streamer.
Apple have built their entire media system around itunes.. so without itunes running on a computer nothing will happen.
The TC is unsuitable as location for your iTunes library as well.. you are simply slowing down the access to the library and making streaming more prone to glitches.
    TC is for TM backups.
Use your Mac with iTunes library on an external hard disk if it is too big to fit in the internal disk.
The samsung TV cannot use the TC either because it needs a DLNA server extension on the storage.
There is however one way.. and not recommending it.. just saying it can be done.
Depending on how your media files are formatted.. you can use a WD live TV.
Because WD TV is a full media player and can play raw media files (almost any format) directly from a media source without DLNA, you can play your movie files.. but IMHO it is much easier to simply get a WD MyCloud or any cheap NAS.. that has built in DLNA media server.. almost all do.. and then your TV can play the media directly without any other player.

  • Time capsule and Apple TV2 ?

Is it possible to use my Time capsule as itunes-server. So that i can stream movies directly to my Apple TV2 ?

Perhaps I'm not understanding your question correctly.
You have the ability to move your current iTunes library to the Time Capsule and then point iTunes on your computer to the new library location.
But,  if you did this...you would have no backups of your valuable movies, music and media.
Can you please clarify regarding your proposed setup?

  • I have working Netgear network. Want to add new Time Capsule and run 2nd network for new apple TV and Imac, and keep the netgear network for my PC and Canon printer.

I have working Netgear N600 dual band router network. The existing network has an XP netbook PC, canon printer, 2 Iphones, Epson Air printer, an Ipad, 3 roku boxes, backup drive. Just bought a new Apple TV box, and time capsule 2T.  I have an IMac on order but don't have it here yet.
My goal is to add new Time Capsule and create 2nd "apple" network for new apple TV, Iphones, Ipad, Epson Air printer and new Imac, and keep the netgear network for my PC, Roku TV boxes, and Canon printer and backup drive.
The Netgear router, the time capsule and new IMac will be on the same desktop, I dont need to backup my netbook PC to time capsule.
    Where do I start?
Which device connects to my modem first, the TC2 or the Netgear?
Is it best wait for the Imac before starting or can the TC2 be set up from my Ipad or PC?
    Thanks.

    It is pretty simple..
Setup the TC in bridge and plug it into the Netgear.. I would leave the netgear as the main router for now, although in the future you can swap things around. The netgear firmware may have issues with bonjour and airplay/airprint?? Does your ipad print ok now?
You can setup the TC using Mac, PC (at least up to win7) or iOS.. they all have airport utility available.
Bridge mode is set differently depending on the version of the utility. This is v5 and how the windows one will look (at least similar to).
    v6 will be as
With the TC in bridge you will still create a wireless network.. and give it a different name from the netgear.. then all the apple devices can connect to it. Use ethernet rather than wireless if the imac is on the desktop with it. Much faster and better for using Time Machine backups.
If you run into any issues.. just post the particular issue. It will take a bit of getting used to, but isn't hard.

  • I have an apple time capsule and am about to have xfinity cable and internet hooked up in my new apartment.  The cable provider said I need a modem that is Docsis3 capable - will my time capsule do the job or do i need another modem?  Thanks

I have an apple time capsule and am about to have xfinity cable and internet hooked up in my new apartment.  The cable provider said I need a modem that is Docsis3 capable - will my time capsule do the job or do i need another modem?  Thanks

will my time capsule do the job or do i need another modem?
The Time Capsule is only a router...with a built in hard drive. It does not have a modem built in, so you will need to use a separate modem with your new calbe service.
If the cable provider offers a modem with their service it would be good idea to use that device, as you know that it will be supported by your provider in the event of any Internet connection difficulties.
If the provider does not offer a modem, I am sure that they have a list of compatible modems on their website, or check with customer support for more information.

  • Time Capsule and time machine with third party router

    Hi,
This is the first time I use this site.
I have over three years old Mackbook.
    APP has expired.
Now I want to know how to set up time capsule in a new environment.
I moved from Australian and Singapore.
I was using Time Capsule and Airport Extreme in Australia.
    I have moved to Singapore.
I am using router provided by Singtell(Singapore Telecommunication). I do not have an Airport Extreme anymore. My housemate and I are using wireless internet-sharing. Needless to say that internet provider is SingTell.
Now I would like to know how to use time capsule and time machine with the network created with a router provided by SingTell.
    What I did so far is;
Connected the time capsule to the power point.
Orange lamp lit and flashed for a few second and stop. Orange lamp stayed on.
Apple Utility does not recognise Time Capsule.
I prefer to use it wirelessly.
There are only two USB cable ports installed.
One is used to synchronize iPhone.
Other is used for a printer.
but if it is not possible, wired would be OK.
    MacBook 13 inch 2.0 GH Late 2006
I hope that someone able to give me an answer for this.
    Cheers,

In this case the apple support people reveal a truly poor understanding.
You must bridge something.. you either bridge the TC.. which 90% of people do.. or you bridge the dsl router.. which some people do manage to do.. You will have to look that up for your modem and check with verizon if they support pppoe authentication.
IMHO just bridge the TC as you were told not to do.. as they are simply wrong about that.
If you already tried this and it didn't work.. try again.. it is the correct approach.
You have no choice. But this time let me suggest you do it using the 5.6 airport utility.. as the apple toyland v6 airport utility is likely half your trouble.
So here is how to get the utility into your computer.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
For screen shots see this post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4668746?tstart=0
Then open the manual setup on the 5.6 utility.. go to internet tab. Connection sharing.. off bridged mode.
    Select this and update..
Then all your IP addresses will be wrong.. I suspect this is where things are going wrong.. and messing you up.
Once the TC is bridged.. turn off everything and restart.. in correct order.. modem.. TC.. client computers etc. 2min gap between each.

  • New to time capsule and need help with installing it?

I just bought a new 3tb time capsule and  also new to apple routers I want to use this as my new wireless router how do I go about switching this out with my router now. Im using a linskys router now nothing special I think its only a 300Mbps the only problem is that we just  had our new house complete and prewired with ethernet connection in every room and a security system that runs off of the router how do I go about switching that set up to the new time capsule? I know if I had to have the company come out to do it they charge a hefty fee which I know its that hard to do the only thing that's stopping me is that set up to the security system I don't want to screw that up???

    Three different aspects
    1. Set the form up to submit the data (XML or FDF), not the full PDF. You can import the data to the PDF on your end.
    2. You can turn on Extended Reader Rights, but then limit the use/users to 500 by the EULA. The applicability of this option depends on your intended application. In a small office, it would be fine. For general web use you would likely exceed the limit and be in violation of the EULA.
    3. There may be an e-mail problem, one reason that e-mail is not recommended for form submission (even if the manual discusses it). Again, in a controlled environment like an office it will probably work fine, but in a web setup it is best to use a web script. There are 2 problems with e-mail that both depend on the client system (YOU have no control, but will be blamed in any case). First, the client machine has to be set up as an active MAPI client. Many folks do not have this on. Second, some e-mail clients treat PDFs like text and the result is a corrupt e-mail submission, even if it makes to you.
If you have the possibility of web submission, do it. I suggest only having the form data submitted and not the form.

  • I recently purchased a time capsule and thought I would put my itunes on it as an external drive as my mac book air only has 120gb. However I can not be connected to the internet and the TC at the same time in order to download the files to the TC. Help?

I recently purchased a Time Capsule and put my iTunes library on there so that I wasn't using up my hard drive space. Only 120gb on my mac book air. However when I download songs from iTunes I can not be connected wirelessly to the internet at the same time. Can I hard wire my TC in to my mac so that I can treat the TC as just an external hard drive? Thanks

Initially, you asked if you can hardwire your MBA to the TC. The answer is yes, by using the optional USB Ethernet adapter that Apple provides. However, in order for your MBA to access the TC's internal or USB-attached HDD, it would need to establish a network connection to it. This would be true of any NAS device on an Ethernet network. Therein, lies the problem. Your MBA cannot connect to two networks simultaneously.
One option then, would be to have two separate iTunes Media folders; one on the MBA & the other on the TC. This way, you can download the music to your MBA when connected to the Internet at the AirPort lounge, and then use iTunes Consolidate Library feature to transfer the audio files to the TC's iTunes Media Folder location. A great program to help maintain multiple iTunes Librarys and/or Media Folders, that you may want to consider, is PowerTunes.

  • Setting up Air play with new time capsule and newer airport express?

I just recently purchased a new time capsule, and I'd like to use my current generation airport express to stream music from my apple devices. I just was wondering what I had to do in airport utility to set this up?  I was also wondering how to transition the network over from the old express to the new time capsule as far  software settings go. I really appreciate the help and assistance. Thanks folks. I'm really looking forward to setting up the network for our new iMac.

    Your setup is very easy..
This is how I would do it.
Remove the express from the network.. ie just unplug it but do not change anything in it. Keep the configuration as is until the TC is working.
Power off the cable modem.. this is requirement.. at least 20min is usually needed, dependining on your ISP.
Go into the airport utility and setup the TC as router for your network .. it is a simple setup.. but I would do as stated.. all short names, no spaces pure alphanumeric rather than accept Apple's names. That is for TC and wireless.
After 20min power up the cable modem.  Once it is running and you have internet access. you can proceed to setup the express to do the airplay. If the internet still doesn't work, power off the cable modem overnight..
Do not lose that express setup so if you absolutely have to, you can at any time substitute it back and have internet again.
So everything is working properly TC in place as full router.. now hard reset the express.. and simply use the airport utility to put it in extend wireless .. or plug in by ethernet if you are going to hard wire it.
The extend wireless setup is all done straight from the existing setup.
Now you can plug your express audio port into your speaker.. and setup the airplay via the itunes.
I will get Bob to give you his way of doing it.. There is no one RIGHT way .. but he can give you more info if you want a particular method.

At startup hold down the Command+Option/Alt+r keys until you see a globe on the screen. Then use disk utility to partition and format the drive HSF+ and then select Reinstall Mac OS X. whatever version of OS X that originally came on your system will be installed and then you can upgrade back to Mavericks.
