Apple TV to Airtunes

I'm thinking about getting the ATV for use in my home. I would like to establish a presence in my home with the functionality this component has. What I can't figure out is if I can use this to transmit music to Airport devices distributed within the home in the same way that a computer can. Can someone advise? Tnx!

no it can take it but not dish it out

  • Does Apple TV have airtunes?

I am thinking of getting an airport express for airtunes functionality. I was wondering if Apple TV has airtunes functionality (can I send my music to Apple tv through Itunes)?
I already have an airport extreme, so I have no use for the wireless AP/router function of airport express.
    Thanks!

you can stream music from iTunes to the TV.
you can also stream, music that is synced to your TV, from it to an airport express. in that case, you computer/iTunes need not be running.

  • ITunes 9, Apple TV, and AirTunes issues

It seems that iTunes 9 on my iMac has two issues, possibly related, both of which are very irksome. Both issues appear after the computer wakes from sleep, leading me to think they are symptoms of the same problem.
Issue #1 is that the AppleTV keeps vanishing from the list of devices. iTunes knows about the AppleTV, the AppleTV is on the network and can stream from iTunes, but the device is missing and hence sync won't work. I've checked the firewall log and the AppleTV is being accepted for incoming connections, so it's not a firewall issue. I've reset the AppleTV, reset the connection between iTunes and the AppleTV, resynced all my content and the problem persists.
I've found two ways to fix this issue: restart iTunes, or go to Preferences : Apple TV, uncheck "Look for Apple TV", close Preferences, open Preferences and recheck the same selection. After a 2-3 second delay, the AppleTV appears in iTunes.
Issue #2 is that the remote speakers connected via an Airport Express disappear. This seems to happen at the same time as the AppleTV disappearing, as the drop-down box for selecting the remote speakers vanishes. Normally it lists the computer, the Apple TV, and the stereo but then the box goes away.
Similarly for issue #1, I can get the drop-down back by going to Preferences : Devices and unselect "look for remote speakers", close and reopen Preferences and reselect the same checkbox. Interestingly, doing this does NOT bring the AppleTV back as a device, but the Apple TV is listed along with the remote speakers.
I think the two issues are related, as they both involve the network. My computer is linked via Ethernet to the DSL router with 802.11 then going to the two devices. It seems to me that iTunes is not reestablishing the connection after waking from sleep. But it's not consistent; I can put the computer to sleep and wake it up, and the connection is there. Other times the connection is gone.
The only thing I can't rule out is a problem wirelessly connecting to the devices, but the AppleTV has always reported 5 bars of signal, and the fact that it still streams from iTunes, yet iTunes doesn't see it, makes me think the problem is in iTunes.
Hopefully this will be helpful to someone else with these problems.

After suffering with the Apple TV for four months, and scouring the internet for fixes, tricks, and workarounds before posting, I have to wonder how many thousands of people there are silently slamming their heads on the sofa while they wait for apple TV to unfreeze, catch up to their attempted remote prompts, or simply just restart as if ATV even gave up on itself. (issues are in Bold)
I have to opt with the streaming feature to bring my movies, music, and photo's to a big screen and home theater sound system due to a 2TB (mostly full) Western digital external HD plugged into the 802.11n airport extreme.
A possible reason for *the 2 second stoppages in play of movies and music are that the airport has to link the music/movies to my computer(itunes), which must travel back to the airport to go to the apple TV.*
I'm also using the iphone for remote use, being that the infamous IR issues with the standard remote are so notorious, I wouldn't be surprised if Best Buy started selling the ATV with white paper already taped to the sensor.
*While using the main menu, 1 out of 4 times in a five minute period of navigating the ATV, the product is unresponsive to commands from either type of remote, and I am left to:*
*1. wait until it unfreezes after about 4 min (60% of the time) when all prompts are suddenly recognized by ATV, all at the same time, to which often it goes back into another multi minute freeze before use is temporarily made available again.*
*2. hold the menu button down on the IR remote so ATV restarts after i've waited over 5 min to see if the freeze will work itself out(15% of the time) or*
*3. try to wait out the issue until the ATV restarts itself with no prompted action (10% of the time) to which I am asked to pick a language again and given the option to restart, run diagnostics or restore factory settings.*
*---The last 15% of the time ATV stays frozen and unresponsive to any remote for, in my estimation ever (I literally waited almost two months, pressing buttons many times a day to try an wake the ATV got nothing but a screensaver before i gave in), until you're forced to pull the plug because the holding-menu-button restart option isn't even working **
I've tried restoring factory settings, changing IR remote batteries, unpairing and repairing, unsyncing and resyncing both itunes libraries, remotes and airport extreme connections, jogging the itunes preferences, putting paper in front of the IR sensor, restarting both itunes and unplugging the ATV, and I even went back to exchange the apple tv for another apple tv to see if it was just an issue with the hardware...nothing has eased these ailments.
The airport and all wireless devices in-play are no further than 15 feet from each other, including the airport, which is just on the other side of a very thin wall w/i 10 feet of the ATV.
*If, in the menu freeze, (which, again happens about 25% of the time i attempt to navigate the ATV menu) you give up on the iphone remote, u see the ATV is receiving the signals from the IR remote, but nothing moves most of the time (mentioned above) and the best you might get after waiting and trouble shooting long enough is the screensaver stopping for a split second, when u press a button on the IR remote, before continuing to ken burns until you want to use the ATV to play frisbee with interstate 20 traffic.*
I'm not sure if Apple over-engineered this device to the point where it's tripping over itself to perform the most basic functions, but I bought this device so I could watch my movies and listen to my music wirelessly, and at this point, the DVI wire and headphone jack splitter are a much more reliable (yet burdensome) option than the ATV.
If I had to guess, it seems most problems stem from users who stream from an external hard drive, whether it be plugged into the host computer, or broadcast wirelessly (this is not taking into consideration the IR remote issue). This might be an unpopular suggestion to Apple, and i'm sure you have some reasoning for not making this an option, either for monetary or twisted legal obligations but the internet complaint factory might be a little less whiny if you just simply make an option to have the ATV be a screen emulator, with AirTunes, and cut all the other youtube, direct internet to ATV garbage that 65% of the people using this product didn't buy it for.
I have been nothing but awestricken with Apple products since I was a child, and thought there were no ends to the company's ability to make products that work with each other easily, seamlessly, and without the need of a computer engineer to set it up for you. Unfortunately though, it seems, for the time being, we might have met the limits.

  • Apple TV and Airtunes

    Good morning !
I understand I can stream music from my Apple TV to an Airport Express. Can I also stream music from my ATV to the AX and another ATV at the same time ?

Yes, while the music is playing on ATV #1, press and hold the play button, a menu will come up and one of the choices is 'speakers', there choose the Airport and the other ATV to act as remote speakers. I have two ATV's and one Airport all connected to speaker systems and do this to have the same music on all three floors of my home. You can also do this through the Remote app on an iPod or iPhone and control what is playing, pause, skip and volume functions too.
    Brian.

  • Can apple tv control airtunes?

is it possible, if i had an airport extreme, an airport express connected to some speakers, and an apple tv, to control all the music using only the apple tv. I dont feel it is worthwile making a multiroom sound system with these products if i have to get up every time and change podcasts and look for music at my computer. Althought its a laptop, its still not good enought. The idea is to control the music from the apple tv using the menus, and for it to sound all over the house.
If any one knows the answere, please let me know.

I have just set up a system like this - The Apple TV is the control interface and streams music from my main iTunes library wirelessly. The RCA audio output from the ATV is hardwired to an audio distribution amp that sends the music to the rest of the house.
The speakers are all wired directly to the amp - so it's not a wireless system like you describe, but it does get the result you are looking for; Apple TV controling the music all over the house.
I am however currently troubleshooting a nasty humm in the speakers that seems to be connected to the Apple TV. The humm goes away when I unplug the HDMI to the TV. This of course defeats the whole purpose - but based on some posts I have seen here I think I can solve this with a ground loop isolator.

  • Apple TV and iTunes 10 - Airtunes speaker doesn't work

    Hello,
I use my apple tv as AirTunes speakers, but after upgrade to iTunes 10 it stop working with my windows 7 itunes 10. It shows the icon and time of the song that is playing but no sound from the speaker. The problem exist when I try to connect from my windows 7 machine, from my macbook pro it works fine. On the other hand my airport express work fine from both machines. All my machines are upgraded with the latest updates.
Any one with the same problem, and possibly with the solution ?
    Bartek

I am having the same problem: iTunes connects to the Apple TV and even plays the songs streaming from my laptop, but there's no sound. Everything else seems to be in order but there's no sound. I have tried every combination of settings I can think of but there's no change. Is it a software conflict/glitch or is Apple forcing me to buy the newest Apple TV to use "AirPlay" instead of "AirTunes"? Either way, I hope there is a fix for this as streaming music to my home stereo is the only reason I bought Apple TV.
I am using the latest iTunes 10 and Windows 7 64 bit. Please help?!

  • AirTunes to Apple TV is slightly out of sync with other AirTunes devices

I've noticed that AirTunes playback through Apple TV is slightly out of sync with the audio output from my Macbook and the AirTunes via my two Airport Express Base Stations. The audio from Apple TV is about a second delayed, causing a mismatch between AirTunes playback on the TV and my Macbook and other AirTunes devices. Thus, my Macbook and AEBSs are in harmony, but Apple TV's AirTunes is about a half-a-beat delayed.
Has anyone else noticed this problem or know of a way to remedy it?

This is quite intriguing. I would expect that an amplifier would be able to decode the digital signal with no noticeable delay, otherwise DVDs etc would play with audio out of sync when using the digital output of the player. In fact, rather the opposite is true with new larger screens where it is the video that's slow and the audio needs to be delayed.
So this would point to the Apple TV's digital output being delayed vs. it's analogue output and I'm not too sure I understand why. It receives digital information over the network and then takes longer converting that to SPDIF (its digital output format) than it does converting it to analogue. Odd.
Perhaps an expert can advise us on this.
This would however explain why the Airport Express can exhibit the same problem and why some people don't experience any delay - they are probably using the analogue output of their Apple device.
What we need in iTunes when selecting devices to play from is an additional control for each with a +- setting that can adjust the delay of each output device so they can all be brought in sync. Since the delay appears to remain consistent that ought to solve the problem for everyone once and for all.
I'll try some tests of my own and see if my problem is indeed this digital delay.

  • Can you connect an Apple TV to a non-Apple Wi-Fi network?

I just purchased an AirPort express with the hopes of using it for AirTunes while being controlled by my iPhone 3G as the remote. After a number of setup issues Apple support told me that I need an Apple wireless router if I want to use AirTunes and surf the internet at the same time. AirPort express can't join an existing non-Apple Wi-Fi network, it needs to create it's own one. (This means I have to disconnect from my internet connection in order to listen to AirTunes.) Does Apple TV have this same limitation, or can you just connect Apple TV to an existing non-Apple Wi-Fi network? (I'm pretty sure that Apple TV has AirTunes too.)
My AT&T U-verse already provides me with a wireless base station; I don't want to have to purchase another one and have redundant routers.

    yes of course.
you can connect it to any wifi network (assuming you know the wifi key of course).
the host itunes library will need to be accessible on that network though.

  • HT201343 Apple Tv mirror + Airport Express audio output = How to?

I want to mirror my MacBook to the Apple Tv but I want to send the audio to the Airport Express.
If I ask my Apple Tv to send the output to the Airport, it works just fine.
If, after that, I use the iPhone to mirror the screen and watch some video on youtube or Twitch, it works fine either.
But if I use my MacBook Pro to mirror the screen, the audio output is sent to my TV through the HDMI cord.
Is that any way that I can solve this?
What I want to do is just mirror my MacBook screen with the audio coming out through the Airport Speaker.
    Thanks for any help, folks!

    Hi wennberginho!
I have a couple of articles that should be able to help you with this issue. If you have a 1st generation Apple TV, you will want to reference this article:

  • No Apple TV in Devices - HELP!!!!!

After 4 hours trying to set up Apple TV I am at the point of giving up and returning the unit, i have tried all the usual stuff but to no avail.
I can connect to Apple TV through Airtunes and play music from PC to Apple TV, so the PC must recognise it but it will not appear in the devices tab.
    Can anyone help, Please!!

I had a similar problem. I had just updated the Appletv to the new release & the iTunes to it's new release. iTunes no longer saw my Appletv after the upgrade. My library was still registered with the Appletv, so I went & added another library just to see if iTunes saw my appletv. It did, so I cancelled out of that, then deleted my old library on my Appletv. Once that was deleted, I then re-added my Library & iTunes saw my Appletv.
The downside is that you lose all of your data on your appletv when you delete the library, so when you re-add the library it will have to resync all you data back to the appletv.
This worked for me, I hope it works for you.

  • ITunes and Apple TV Won't Sync After Moving to New Mac HD

I've had to clone my 10.5.5 system onto a new HD. Now the Apple TV that previously synced doesn't see iTunes 8.0.1. On the Apple TV under Settings>Computer, the link to my iTunes library is greyed out. However from iTunes on the Mac, I can still select the Apple TV for AirTunes and stream to it so they are connecting on some level. I'm fairly certain that I could turn off the sync on the Apple TV side and set up a new one. However that will likely result in the entire 23GB library being erased on the Apple TV and copied again over the network. Is there a way to save many hours and reconnect the libraries without copying everything again?

I haven't seen any reports of it being done with version 2 of the tv software, but under version 1, if you set up a new primary library from the tv which was essentially the same as the library you were replacing, it wouldn't re-write anything which it didn't need to.
As I say, I have no idea if this is the same with version 2 software.

  • AirTunes skips every 5 seconds.

Title sums it up really. My AirTunes will skip every 5 seconds. It's horribly annoying. I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?

This is a problem that sometimes never has a cure. That being said, the only commonly effective ways of dealing with this issue are described in Apple's article AirTunes audio stream drops or cuts out.
Make sure you are running the latest version of the Airport Express firmware (6.3) - you can check this with the Airport Utility.

  • Airtunes on iTunes 8.1 for Mac fails with AppleTV

I'm stumped. Airtunes works in every case, EXCEPT iTunes 8.1 for Mac to Apple TV. It worked before the iTunes 8.1 update or the Apple TV 2.3.1 update, which I applied within a week, and did not try in between.
    SYMPTOM
Apple TV Airtunes show as speakers in iTunes as they did before. I can select them, but immediately after it defaults to the previous selection. I can use Airtunes over my Airport Express just fine. I can do Apple TV to Apple TV Airtunes, and that works. I can even use Windows iTunes on my Mac on Windows XP, and that works fine. In other words, same networking, different issues.
    Here's what I've got:
    One Airport Express, v7.4.1
Two Apple TVs, version 2.3.1, connected by Ethernet
    Two Macs, OSX 10.5.6, iTunes 8.1 (50)
One Windows XP virtual machine on VMWare Fusion, running iTunes 8.1
Setup is networked via Apple Airport Extreme, and a 10/100 hub
    Combination I've tried:
Mac iTunes 8.1 to Apple TV: NO
Windows iTunes 8.1 to Apple TV: Yes
Apple TV to Apple TV: Yes
Mac itunes, Windows iTunes or Apple TV to Airport Express: Yes
    Troubleshooting:
    Power cycled Apple TV
Turned off Airtunes, turned back on on Apple TV
Removed registration on Apple TV for all itunes libraries
Setup Apple TV again with iTunes library.
    Any ideas?

Yes, that's exactly the problem I have. I have done additional troubleshooting.
I used another drive to bring up an alternate Mac OS X on my iMac. I tried 8.0.2, it worked. I then upgraded to 8.1. That worked as well. I tried creating a new account on my two machines that don't work, and that failed.
So then I tried removing iTunes, using these steps:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224
I also removed my iTunes library on my laptop, which contains nothing. Even after completely removing iTunes and my library, I still could not connect to the Apple TV using Airtunes.
It doesn't appear many other users have the same problem, including my brother who has a similar setup. At this point, I'm wondering if some sort of third-party software may be interfering. Here's the software I have installed on my machine that might have modified the Kernel:
    VMWare Fusion
    FireFox
    Lotus Mobility Connect
    Lotus Notes
    Aperture
    Final Cut Express
    HP Printer software
    Microsoft Office 2008
    Open Office
    Omnifocus
    SuperDuper
Java - forgot what I did, but I needed to install a Java package to get a browser-based application to work months ago.
These are the only programs I have installed on both machines. Do you have any of these programs in common?

  • ITunes doesn't find Airtunes when connected with cable, only WiFi

I have an Apple TV with Airtunes enabled. But apparantly, it's not possible to connect to it from PC's who are connected to LAN with cable instead of WiFI? Does anyone know why?
    More details:
    I have 3 PC's:
    PC 1: , Windows 7 64-bit with iTunes 9.1.1.12 (latest)
Stationary, connected to LAN using cable in a Gigabit switch
    PC 2: 100% fresh install of Windows 7 32-bit and iTunes 9.1.1.12
Stationary, connected to LAN using cable in a Gigabit switch
    PC 3: Win 7 32-bit with iTunes 9.1.1.12
    Netbook - connected through WiFi
Apple TV device (latest firmware) is connected to same LAN using cable as well. *All PC's can ping the Apple TV without problems.*
So the problem is that iTunes doesn't find the Airtunes device (the output dropdown selector doesn't show up). I first tried on my main PC (PC1). It didn't work, so i tested on PC2 (wich is a fresh install of both OS and iTunes!), but same problem there.
But then the weird thing happened. I tried to install on my netbook, and it worked! Only difference is that the netbook was connected through WiFi. I don't see why that would matter, but just for fun i tested to disconnect WiFi, and connect with cable and boom - airtunes selection dissappeared! As soon as I disconnected the cable and reconnected WiFi, it appeared again.
Why on earth would Airtunes only work on WiFi? As you can see on this screenshot, network configuration is equal on Wifi and cabled connection. (Apple TV has IP 10.0.1.30)

It's supposed to be able to cope with slightly different file & folder structures, missing track numbers, all tracks in just an artist folder, everything in Unknown Artist\Unknown Album etc. Details here. Can you give me an idea of how things are set out? Maybe it needs a little tweak to cope with the way you've done things, or we could use something like MediaMonkey to reorganize what you have into something the script can work with.
I'm going to be out for much of the day but I'll look in on this thread later.

  • Screen freezing when trying to watch BT sports through Apple TV

I got Apple TV in January 2015, when i try to watch BT Sports through my IPad air the screen freezes.  I have moved the router nearer to the devices but it has not made a difference. Anyone have any solutions i could try?

    I have the same problem...
Months ago, when the version 2.0 software was released, I upgraded, because I was happy about Apple TV supporting AirTunes. But, the upgrade was a disaster in that the Apple TV became completely unusable.
Problem 1: Menus would stick forever, whenever displaying "My" content (i.e., my music, my movies), presumably because it was terribly inefficient at building the image slideshow thing to the left
Problem 2: During playback of a video file (again, in "My" stuff), it would just hang or stop completely at seemingly random times.
Anyway, I backtracked to version one of the software, because version 1 has always been rock solid for me.
So, the point is, the software is now on version 2.3, and I downloaded it, and lo and behold, those two problems still exist, which makes the Apple TV again completely useless for the one main thing I use it for...watching stuff from podcast downloads / DVD rips / my music, etc. Was there ever any fix for this?
