Apple TV / TV optimal settings?

I love my gadgets but I'm a little bit thick when it comes to some parts of operation / set-up.
I've got an Apple TV and Toshiba Regza AV Series HD Ready TV. I've set it up to what I think is the optimal setting for screen etc but I'm now doubting whether I've done it correctly all this time.
I've not been sure about difference between HD Ready and HD active TVs and when I've viewed some trailers supposedly in HD they've not really 'stood out' as I'd expect them to.
I've got my present settings at 1080i HD but there is a 1080i HD 50hz. Not sure if either is correct. Also the HDMI output is set to Auto. Is this correct too?!?

You have another choice - use your own eyes to decide.
Even on a non-full HD set I could discern improvements going from 576 i/p, through 720 p to 1080i/p - fonts looked less pixellated and smoother on higher settings. Sam observed on a full HD set.
Stick the set on a menu and cycle through video options to see what looks best to your eyes. This is of course for static images, but you could watch a short clip of video ateach setting and decide.
Yes 1080p is theoretically best but there are many factors involved and what;s right for one person isn't for another's set.
For menus/pictures AppleTV can do up to 1080i or 1080p if your set/AppleTV combination allows (some only allow 1080i), but for video it's up to 720p at 24/25fps.
For iTunes store content in HD I assume they're using 24 fps for movies, so 60fps (in essence NTSC rates) standard settings (which don't say 60fps) will probably work better as the rate is 2.5 times the movies rate, whereas using 50fps with 24fps doesn't scale quite as nicely mathematically - it's all theoretical though and I can't see much difference on AppleTV between the standard (60Hz) and 50Hz setings. YMMV which is why I suggest trying short clips to see.
As for the HDMI Auto setting - probably fine for most people, but the 2 that make quite a difference are the light and dark options (I think that's their name, they keep changing this menu) - I prefer the light option as you get more shadow detail, other prefer more contrasty darker blacks - personal preference. You can see the difference on menu items with refections quite well - reflections barely show on HDMI dark. Try it and see.

How do I reset Apple Mail to factory settings? I had 7 emails accounts on there and was about to add my school email address. It wasn't going through though, so I went to the school's IT department to ask them to do it. Unfortunately, the IT guy couldn't fix the school email and worse, now ALL my emails accounts won't go online. They all have exclamation points to their right, and are constantly asking for passwords. No matter how many times I put in the right password, it still keeps asking for it. I tried fixing it from Mail Preferences and System Preferences but nothing works. It keeps saying Connection Error. I don't know what the IT guy tweaked but it messed up everything.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

We rented a movie from Apple TV, had to pause it, accidentally pressed the search button on remote, could not get back into the movie, apple said 'go to settings, downloads, look for the movie', yeah, right, there is no 'downloads' selection under setting

wow, this is taking forever to communicate with anyone, I just want my $4.99 back from the movie rental I paid for. I paid for a rental, we were watching it, had to pause it, accidentally hit 'menu' on the apple remote, tried to get back into the movie, wouldn't let us, apple said ' go to settings, click downloads, select the rented movie from there',( not really a quote, but, close enough). So, we went to 'Settings' on main menu, but, there is no 'downloads' icon....I guess it is true: Do Not Rent from Apple TV'.

You are looking at outdated instructions, you can find the "check the downloads" option under settings > iTunes Store. You may also wish to look on the movies > rentals.

I did sign a two year contract and completed that contract. The 3gs is no longer in service. My daughter is going overseas to protect you and your family. I was attempting to find a way for her to have a reliable phone that could offer her some connection with home as she travels through the middle east. She travels in missions all over.
At&T unlocks other phones of theirs why not the iPhone? AT&T says that Apple will not give them the code, it is not the carrier. If I would have known this situation would have come up I would have bought and unlocked 3gs phone"Deggie" . My main complaint is that Apple has not good excuse as to why they will not allow their phones to be unlocked from services well, AT&T . I bought the phone full price, completed the contract terms, even went for and iPhone 4 with another2 year contract, along with owning an apple computer... I love the product. My main issue is give me a good answer as to why you won't allow a phone to be unlocked. It doesn't hurt Apple, People still have to buy the phones from them, and use their App store and iTunes.
Sorry, just upset about my daughter heading over there, boots on the ground, and just pray she will be safe. Would have liked to facetime her while she is in the airports and in specific areas allowed for that.
Please don't come down on me for asking this question. I understand all the contracts etc.... but to single out the iPhone specifically to not unlock after contract is over does not seem fair.

New stream, low upload rate... Optimal Settings for streaming games?

I've been fiddling around with FMLE for the past few days/weeks and trying to find the best quality to stream quality games such as Bad Comapny 2, Starcraft 2, Mass Effect 2, etc
I am able to play games at max settings, but when I do the stream will lag so I choose to make the settings low enough so I can stream.
The only probably right now is they seem quite blurry/pixelated - which is probably due to my upload rate of 0.8mbps from SpeedTest.net1
My specs are:
Resolution of 1680x1050 (Most of my games like Bad Company 2 are played at 1280x720 windowed mode)
i5-2500K
GTX 560 Ti
12GB Ram
1TB Hard Disk Space
Windows 7 64bit
Upload rate of 0.8mbps (and 5.0mbps download incase it is needed)

In iChat 3 or iChat 4 setting System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming to 1.5Mbps is quite important.
In Tiger (10.4.x) the Automatic Setting here is read as Zero by iChat and can cause issues even when the Speed is high enough.
In Leopard for iChat 4 this Automatic setting is read as 384k by iChat (although this is the Minimum for a 4 way Video chat it may still cap your Internet Speed).
If you have to change this iChat will need a restart if open.
The real controlling factor is the Upload speed the Internet Connection speed has.
There is one other place to help with the Bandwidth/Internet Connection speed.
This is in iChat menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit drop down.
This can be changed during A/V chat and changes to the Bit rate iChat is using is shown in the Connection Doctor (Video Menu).
This is best used when Really Fast Buddies (Processors and Internet Speeds) can tend to "Over-run" lesser speeded Buddies. It can also help if your ISP manages the Bandwidth/Internet Connection speed making it run slower or faster at different times of the day (Also look at Fair Usage Policies).
There is no independent way to reduce the Frame rate that would have a direct effect on this.
There are other apps that do use less demanding picture quality that in turn effects the Frame rate which can effect the Bandwidth needed/Used

CS4 Doesn't Show Saved Optimized Settings

I'm used to CS3's way of doing things.
When in "Save For Web and Devices...", i tried to save some settings and was presented with a file dialog. Having no idea where they should go in order to show in the pop-up, and not finding a satisfactory answer in help, i tried the Photoshop Presets folder under 'Optimized Settings'. No go.
Today i read in the FAQ here that they should be saved in:
~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS4/Presets/Optimized Settings/
Seems to me if that's where they should go, Photoshop ought to just save them there. When i tried to choose that location to save in, the folder "Optimized Settings" didn't exist at that path so i created it and saved them there.
The settings still didn't show up in the menu before or after restarting Photoshop.
Mac Pro 1.1 - 2.66 GHz - 9 GB - 2 TB HD - OS 10.5.7 - Photoshop 11.0.1.

My mistake.
I mixed up the location for Illustrator Optimized Settings with that of Photoshop Optimized settings. For some reason Illustrator settings go in "Application Support", while Photoshop Optimized Settings go in "Preferences"; specifically:
~/Library/Preferences/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS4/Presets/Optimized Settings/
It's a bit confusing since there are Adobe Photoshop CS4 "Presets" folders in the app folder, and in Application Support, as well as in Preferences.

Optimal settings for encoding HDV 1080i footage to SD dvd

I have footage recorded from an HDV camcorder and edited in FCP 1080i 60. It is fast moving sports footage shot with a high shutter speed the total running time is 40 min. I have encoded it to DVD by taking the HDV 16:9 FCP sequence dropping it to a 4by3 DV sequence to get the window box 4by3 aspect ratio and exporting this sequence as an mov. This mov was then encoded with compressor dvd 90 min best settings
I was not able to find a quick way to do the aspect ratio change in Compressor 3. Please let me know optimal settings.
The big problem however is how compressor has dealt with the high speed moving footage. Played from the DVD on a sd tv the motion is terrible. It looks like the interlacing is all off and the image doubled up. The slow mo footage used in the piece is fine.
What are the optimal settings to smooth out the motion?

Optimal Settings for FCP6 on MacBook Pro?

Up until a week ago, I've worked mostly on a Mac Pro with Final Cut Studio 2. I've been fortunate enough to get a MacBook Pro (2.6Ghz) also outfitted with FCS2 and I'm wondering if there is such a thing as "optimal settings" for running FCS2 on the portable notebook.
I'm referring to such things as memory and cache settings and Playback control, etc. I would like the MBP to run FCS as efficiently as possible. I know I won't get the same power-crunching ability as the Mac Pro but does anyone have any ideas?

We have a 2.4Ghz MBP with the 256 MB video card.
We have 4 GBs of RAM, which you should consider.
However, without indicating what codec and cam you will be using, there isn't much more to say.
If you are working with a DV or HDV camcorder, for example, use an ExpressCard 34 FW or eSATA card and an external HDD for media.
That creates independent FW buses if you go that route or a FW bus and a eSATA HDD connection.

HT5622 Apple ID correct in Settings and Itunes. Wrong in app update.

App Store has 2 updates available for download (Twitter and Facebook). When I choose Update, the wrong Apple ID is used. It is an email address that I have never seen. The Apple ID in both settings and Itunes is correct.

Delete the apps, then download them from the app store again.

Optimal settings for video extraction

What are the optimal settings in final cut pro 6.0 in order to take a finished project from my computer and put it on an external drive for the purpose of transferring this file to a beta tape? Also what are the optimal settings in order to take this same project file and burn it to a DVD? I want to get the best quality video as possible as this video will be played on TV.

What are your settings now? Who will be handling the output? They are the ones to ask the question on output format for layback to betasp. I'd say Uncompressed 8-bit or ProRes (standard def)... but this is dependent on the format you are working with now too.
As for DVD...just export a QT movie (self contained, sequence settings...or REFERENCE, uncheck the self contained box) and use the DVD preset in Compressor, then send to DVD SP...or take the QT into DVD SP and have it do the encode.

Disabling your Home Hub firewall can open up your network to external attack, so you need to take appropriate security measures to protect your network.
BT strongly recommends that the firewall is not left disabled as this makes your network very vulnerable to attack by hackers.

Optimal Settings using Graphic Equalizer

Hey everybody, I'm on a laptop computer (A Dell XPS M70) with surround speakers (two on the front, two on top next to the keyboard, and a subwoofer). The speakers sound okay, but I was wondering if anyone had optimal settings for the graphics equalizer to make the sound clearer and with greater bass definition. Please post either a screenshot of the settings, or just state what setting you have each slider of the Graphics Equalizer on. Thanks a lot!

Actually Hick he's right and your wrong, LOL. I decided to take a look at Dells site and his laptop does have an intergrated sub.
Standard:
High definition integrated stereo sound with Integrated subwoofer.
Stereo 2 watt per channel main speakers and 5 watt, class D subwoofer with bass reflex port

I have two facetime users, both connecting to our enterprise wireless network (Cisco WCS) and they can't make a facetime connection from IPAD to IPAD. Are there any apple protocols or other settings that need to be enabled on WCS? No firewall involved.

If anyone ever comes across this and has the same issue, here's what I did to fix it:
My Linksys router has a Network Mode setting, and I had to change it from "Mixed" to "Wireless-G only". (I would've used N but one of the NICs in my house is too old to support it.) Anyway, after making this change, Facetime works fine on the phone. Hope this helps someone else!

Each of you need to have your own apple id's instead of sharing is the best way. But you can go to each phones settings, messages, send and recieve, and down to start new conversation from, and make sure each of you have your own email address with a check mark beside of it not the same address.

DVD Studio Pro: Optimal Settings for 16:9 SDV Streaming?

Hi folks!
Gotta question about video streaming rates and DVD authoring.
I understand, mainly from reading the forums, that jacking up the streaming bit rate for video makes a nicer quality image on the DVD, but it does so at the cost of compatibility with lower end or older DVD players. Understood.
However, I am a beginner so I have no idea what streaming rate to use (I think Apple suggests about 6). It's no good testing with my DVD player because I have a BlueRay player that seems to work with 7 (mbps?) just fine.
My project is being shot at 16:9 Standard DV format and edited in a 24p timeline. I'm looking to make a native 24p DVD at 16:9, SDV, non interlaced.
Does anyone have an "optimal" or "preferred" bit rate for streaming with this kind of format?
Any suggestions?

Definitely planning on DVD5 for the compatibility reason you mentioned and also because they are a heck of a lot cheaper to work with.
So, I did a burn of a 45 minute video, but set the average bit rate to 3.2 (gave me 130 minutes on DVD5) and I'm plenty happy with the resolution, and output file for video was 1.2GB or so. (I only had audio on select shots) It's mainly the other number, the max bit rate, that I'm not sure what to set it to.
Should I go for 8 for the max bit rate, or go more conservative at 7 for compatibility? Lower?
Let's put it this way:
This is for my "demo reel" and it has to look good, but more importantly it absolutely has to work with an average DVD player. I'm mainly concerned about max number over quality (average) number because I don't want to send a disc to someone (for business purposes) and then have it not play. If it doesn't play, I'm not only going to look like an ***, but if I only have one shot to get some financial backing for a project... well you get the picture.
