Apple TV using Airplay

When using Airplay with Apple TV to watch a movie saved on an iPad, does this use data from your data limit with your internet provider?

No because Air Play requires Wifi. What ever network your Apple TV is on your iPad will need to be on the same one. Hope that helps.

  • Streaming video from iPad to Apple TV using Airplay

    Hey there,
I have the following problem which I havent been able to fix. I have an Apple TV (2010 model) and the latest iPad which I use to stream videos on my TV using Airplay. Everything seems to work fine, I am able to stream and whatch movies on my TV using my wireless network.
However, as soon as I purchased a movie and trying to stream it to my apple TV, I am only able to stream the audio through my Apple TV while the video is shown on my iPad. Both my devices iPad and Apple TV are updated with the latest software.
Is there anyone that shares the same problem or have a solution to this? As I said, only when the movie is being downloaded while I want to stream it on my Appe TV, I am only able to hear audio through my Apple TV. As soon as the movie has downloaded, I am able to stream both audio and video to my TV.
Thank you so much for your input.
    Sebastian

I have just experienced the same issue with the same setup and its very frustrating.
Wanted to watch a movie (Airplane 2), but couldnt find it when browsing directly on the Apple Tv, so switched to iTunes on the iPad, found the movie, and purchased it. I was thinking thatnwhen I purchased it, the movie would appear in my library and I'd be able to start playing it as it downloaded. I realised quickly this was not the case, and that it was just downloading on my iPad, so then I thought, well thats okay, I'll just start playing it on my ipad and airplay it to my Apple TV.... Which is where I met the same as yourself. Only the audio plays when trying to airplay a movie thats downloading. If I try to airplay mirror, I get the message ""the connected display is not authorised to play protected movies". Great.
So I've had to wait for the entire move to download, and now it airplays from ipad to AppleTV. I also then had to do a Transfer Purchases from iTunes, to get the movie into my library. Not very intuitive really and very frustrating when I wanted to watch the movie quickly.

  • Is there a way I can stream video from my 2012 AirMac to the Apple TV using airplay and at the same time stream the audio to an air speaker?

Is there a way stream video from a 2012 MacBook Air to a TV using Apple TV and at the same time steam the audio to an air speaker. Also the same question but using an ipad

You can try one thing. Follow these steps:
    1. On your Mac, turn on AirPlay Mirroring and connect it to the Apple TV, so audio and video will stream from the Apple TV.
    2. Turn off the sound of the TV where you have connected the Apple TV.
    3. Then, make sure that you have turned on the AirPlay speakers. Then, open System Preferences > Sound > Output, and choose the external speakers, so sound will stream from these external speakers.
    This should work correctly

  • Only audio is trasferred to TV vía Apple TV using airplay

My 27" iMAC (late 2013) has the capability to perform airplay using Apple Tv (I am using apple TV model A1469). The menú in the iMAC indicates I have the option to do mirror and it shows "expand desktop" selected as a default. When I select airplay it trasfers only the audio to the TV; and when I try to select mirror it does not perform the selection to go to Mirror, even it shows as if it is available. Any hints to solve this issue?

Providing your HDMI connection goes from the Apple TV to your receiver and then from your receiver to your TV, you should not need an additional optical audio cable.
Make sure that your receiver is set up correctly and that the input port used by the Apple TV is mapped to the output to your speakers. If you are still encountering problems try adjusting the "audio out" and "Dolby digital" settings in settings> audio and video.

  • Why can't the APPLE TV use AIRPLAY SPEAKER-OUT for movies/videos?

I can't find one good explanation on why the Apple TV can't use the Airplay Speaker-Out for Movies/Video content; only for audio/music. Does anyone have any insight into this?
For example, I have a video on my Macbook Pro (or my iPad or my iPhone) and I can stream the video via the Airport Express to my 2nd gen Apple TV, but I can't stream the audio of this video from my Apple TV back to the Airport Express and the speakers attached to it. If I had digital speakers connected to the Apple TV I assume it wouldn't be an issue, but at the moment, I only have analog speakers connected to the Airport Express... and I CAN do this with music only content, but then it becomes silly because in that case, I can just as easily stream music directly to the Airport Express from my chosen device (iPhone, et al.) without going through the Apple TV, but for video/movies, you need the Apple TV for the video; yet you can't use the Speaker-Out for the audio of that video and it just doesn't make sense, unless I am missing something...
Any help is greatly appreciated (a google search came up with nothing useful at all.)

It's not a flippant answer, no-one here will know for sure why Apple have chosen to do this. So in light of the fact that you won't get a definitive answer here, I suspect it doesn't matter because you aren't going to change anything, you just need to accept it.
FWIW, I don't think licensing issues have anything to do with it. I think Apple expect you to have a sound system connected by either HDMI or optical and on that basis any connection via an airport express would be in another room and why would someone in another room want to listen to a movie without being able to see it.
Apple differentiate themselves from others by providing features that everyone wants, they don't cripple their creativity by catering for the few like other companies. I'm sorry but I suspect you are one of the few here.

  • Slideshow bug in 4.2.1 when pushed using AirPlay to Apple TV2

    Anyone else found this bug?
(after upgrading to iOS 4.2.1 and Apple TV 4.1)
If you enable a Photos slideshow on the iPhone and change the custom transitions/photo lengths, everything plays fine on the iPhone 4 as expected. However, now that you can stream to the Apple TV2 using AirPlay, there is a bug in the 4.2.1 software. If you start your Photos slideshow on your iPhone, then press the airplay icon (top right of the screen), it streams your slideshow to Apple TV2. Great news! However, the issue is that the pushed slideshow only shows photos using the dissolve transition with 2 second intervals between photos, regardless of your user defined slideshow options. As soon as you disable the AirPlay and go back to the slideshow on your iPhone, it plays fine using your custom settings.
Am I crazy, or is anyone else finding this using the iOS and Apple TV2 updates today???

I have an ipad running ios 4.2 and my slideshow only does the shuffle with repeat and either 2 or 3 second (not sure which one it is) show time. Rebooted, changed the settings, etc. But still stuck with those settings when running the slideshow.

  • Cant use apps and stream music using airplay to apple tv: ipad

Hello all, was trying to stream music from my ipad to my apple tv to my stereo using airplay, and while doing that i wanted to play a game, who would have thunk it right, But as soon as i launch a game it kills the audio for my music and im stuck with the normally bad music of the games i own. They didnt design it so my ipad is now crippled untill i am done streaming music, did they? Is there any way around it, or am i missing something?
Question is, can i stream music from my ipad to my apple tv using airplay AND play games on my ipad. I see i can use the web browser with no issues. But games and other Pps kill my music stream. Please help and thanks.

well actually they arent. after pluging away at the problem for a while, i solved the issue. all i needed to do was mute the music in the app, and airplay is never affected. the issue only happens when launching an app with music. as long as i can mute the music in the app, airplay works perfectly. it workks so well that i can still hear the sfx from the game or app in the back ground of my music. which is perfect, just like a game i would play normally, plus i get the added suround sound to my bite sized game.
sorry but if there was a not helpful button, you would get it. before responding, look into it first. you responded as if you knew, which it is obvious you didnt. just a tip.

  • Apple TV stops airplay streaming

I was listening to my music from my iPad to Apple TV using airplay, suddenly I wasn't able to listen to music because Apple TV crashed. When it restarts the audio stream works, but the audio output doesn't work at all.
I've updated the apple tv's software by software update to days ago.
This problem isn't only with the iPad, but also with the iPhone and the Mac by family sharing. How can I fix it?

Not necessarily, but right now you don't have a stable network and there are a lot of factors that can compromise that. I didn't say ethernet was the only option, again you can get a report of your network to see the status.  Would have to change things in order to strengthen the wifi signal (i.e. router location, channel, placement of ATV etc). I am running on wireless without issue, same as most users, and if you took it to a controlled environment (like Apple) you would see similar results.
