Apple TV (V2) - 1080P?

Just started to use my new Apple TV, I must say very impressed and for £99 probably one of the best value products Apple have released for a while (lets hope they adopt this marketing technique during 2011!!)
So I have my old Apple TV on ebay and I will probably have an Airport Express unit listed within a week, which should more than cover the cost of my new ATV.
One question - I can only seem to set the unit to 720P and not 1080P, a bit strange as the old unit was set to 1080P on my Sony 40" LCD.
Thoughts anyone?

It will only do 720, not 1080. Frankly, there isn't that much of a difference.

  • Quicktime not playing Apple ProRes (Proxy) 1080p video - help!

Hey guys I have a Apple ProRes (Proxy) 1080p video sent to me via Firevilla from a friend in the states - which simply says - "will not play - quicktime does not understand the format and may need additional software." All my software updates have been made. Does anyone know if I actually need a specific ad on??!! Or what is going on here!!??
    Many Thanks

Because you're using QT 6.5.2 you can't view all QuickTime content. Quite a lot of pages are now using H.264 video and it can't be viewed using 6.5.2.
Try one of my pages to test your browser plug-in and QT version:
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/California/index.html
The file is about 3MB's. If it plays correctly your browser and QT version are OK.
The plug-in settings can be found in the QT Control Panel (under MIME settings). You can also check your browser preferences for "helpers".

I Imovie is possible and in aperture not?
I have only 2 solution, firsth, export file in 720p, second export file in hd1080, import file in imovie and with imovie create a file in 1080p for my apple tv3.
it is correct or there are another solutions?
    thanks

The described problem is typical of a cable issue, however if you are sure you have looked into this properly, then it could well be a hardware problem.

  • Does Apple TV support 1080p?

    Hello All,
I just purchased an Apple TV and the set up was very easy. My TV is 1080p, but when I hooked up my ATV it only gave me the option of 1080i. Right now I have the ATV hooked up with component and rca audio plugs. If I use HDMI does that somehow flag the ATV to give 1080p as an option? Right now it only gives the option of 720p.
Also the movie I rented was 5.1, but I only got normal surround thru my sound system (which supports 5.1)
    thanks,
    Mike

Right now I have the ATV hooked up with component and rca audio plugs.
If you use HDMI there is two-way communication between the devices, so automatic switching of video resolution is possible. With component, however, you have to set the output resolution manually. As for audio, you won't get surround sound with rca plugs, as they are analog. You will need to use either HDMI or an optical audio cable for the sound if you want 5.1 (for videos that have it).

  • Why cant i switch my apple tv to 1080p

I have an HD tv that supports 1080p however I have the apple tv model mc572ll/a

It's a generation 2 AppleTV that only supports output of up to 720p.

  • Apple TV and 1080p

I have a Apple TV (40 gig) on the way to my house. I know that the ATV can output at 1080p, but for what purpose? As far as I can tell the ATV can't do playback on any 1080p material, am I correct on this assumption? If so, does this tell us that down the road the existing Apple TV lacks the processing power to do 1080p playback when (in that land of Oz in the somewhat distant future) there are 1080p movie downloads available?

yes it just upscale the 720p to 1080
which is pretty much what a tv which run 1080 does too
if it run fullscreen that is
if the tv is bad at upscaling then maybe the atv can do a better job
but i doubt there is much difference
it's imho a popword for supported feature lists
it's kinda like the digital zoom of mediaCenters :P
not sure why it dont do 1080P video if it's the spcs which cant handle it
or if they felt it would be a strain on the network and
more so on the internet connection to have 1080P

  • Apple cinema displays 1080p?

I was just wondering if all the apple cinema displays are high definition (1080p)

1080p = 1920x1080 resolution, so yes, both the 23" and the 30" can display full 1080p resolution. The problem, as other poster said, is lack of connections, so you can't really connect any HD equipment directly to he display.
However, i have a cable HDTV box connected to my mac through firewire, and i'm able to watch most of my regular and HD channels on my computer with firewire sdk 26 development kit from apple.

  • Can 2nd generation Apple TV play 1080p?

I cannot find a 1080p option in the menu. Does it only support 720p?

Unfortunately only the 3rd generation supports 1080p.

  • Quicktime Pro 1080p codec for apple tv?

Anyone know if there's a Quicktime Pro codec yet that will take original 1080p content (like home movies shot on a 1080p camera) and encode it to M4V for Apple TV at 1080p?  I think the "Export to Apple TV" in QTP-7 still encodes to 1280x720 doesn't it?
    Thanks!!

Although QTKirk has provided the most generic answer that should provide useable file, here are some additional details:
I think the "Export to Apple TV" in QTP-7 still encodes to 1280x720 doesn't it?
Unfortunately, this is true. The current TV preset creates files targeted for use on multiple TV models which limits the maximum resolution available.
Anyone know if there's a Quicktime Pro codec yet that will take original 1080p content (like home movies shot on a 1080p camera) and encode it to M4V for Apple TV at 1080p?
Unfortunately, the only QT 7 Pro option that allowed the creation of a 1080 H.264/AAC M4V file was the old "Movie to H.264" option which was replaced by the current mobile device specific presets. You can, of cource create a 1080 H.264/AAC MOV file using the "Movie to QuickTime Movie" method described by QTKirk or create a 1080 H.264/AAC MP4 file using the "Movie to MPEG-4" option and then either change the file extension manually (works with most apps that don't really check the file container type) or actually remux the data to a real M4V file container.
On the other hand, there are other, non-QT 7 Pro options available. I personally prefer the free HandBrake option here. It has separate presets for TV (720p24, 540p30), TV2 (720p30), and TV3 (1080p30) options available if you prefer that route or allows advanced customization to create your own preferred preset to directly create an anamorphic or non-anamorphic 1080p H.264/AAC M4V file. What you shpould actually be asking yourself here is not ifthe there is a work flow that can make your 1080 content but what are the actual goals of the work flow you want to use. For instance, are you saying "I want to create the best, highest quality 1080p non-anamorphic file I can and don't care how large the file is or how many hours it takes to make the conversion?" or are you saying "I will accept a high quality, anamorphic file that is playback efficient in terms of file space and streaming requirements and requires only a moderate investment in time for the conversion?" or something in-between?

  • Visual Hub questions (related to Apple TV) and others

    Hey guys,
Just bought Visual Hub to convert my stuff.
What do you recommend for the settings ?
Right now this is what I use : (NOTE : I translated on the fly from french so maybe it's a bit different)
    -To : iTunes
-Optimize for : Apple TV 5.1
-Quality : BIG QUESTION HERE : I want as close as 1080p as can be, but if the source file I'm -converting is poor quality, won't this make a big file for nothing ? What should I base my choice on?
    -H.264 enabled
-In advanced, I select double-pass and deinterlace, audio settings = initial
Nothing else is tweaked in advanced
so what do you think ?
I have a couple of other questions :
    - What if I deinterlace a video that is not interlaced in the beginning ?
    - How can I determine if a video is interlaced ?
    - How can I tell if a video is in 5.1 or even full HD ?
    - How can I make sure to get 5.1 on my Apple TV
    - Can Apple TV play 1080p ? or is it just upscaling ?
    - If A TV can output 1080p, where can I find sources file of such quality ?
Anything else that I should know of related to my questions ?
    Thanks guys !!

I don't use visualhub so I couldn't suggest settings for you, but.
but if the source file I'm -converting is poor quality, won't this make a big file for nothing
Yes, that's all it will do.
What if I deinterlace a video that is not interlaced in the beginning ?
    You will lose detail
How can I determine if a video is interlaced ?
Take a look at it on a progressive scan display such as your mac monitor, you will see horizontal lines in high motion areas when paused.
How can I tell if a video is in 5.1 or even full HD ?
    See This
How can I make sure to get 5.1 on my Apple TV
Your content file need to have an AC3 track and you will need to play the audio through a 5.1 capable receiver or home theatre system.
Can Apple TV play 1080p ? or is it just upscaling ?
It can play up to 720p after which it upscales.
If A TV can output 1080p, where can I find sources file of such quality ?
    More or less nowhere.

  • AppleTV 1080P

I am considering buying AppleTV.  My main concern is that from what I have read, AppleTV cannot provide 1080P quality.  With a Samsung 52" TV, it is definitely a concern.  I currently buy Blu-ray movies due to the quality, but would prefer to stream HD movies to my television than have to search through a huge disc collection...
If AppleTV could produce 1080P, I would buy one in a heartbeat AND buy my movies from iTunes...it is a WIN/WIN for Apple...and me.

We don't really know if it's a software or hardware limitation.
In reality commercial  iTunes store content is limited to 720p currently which probably explains Apple's disinterest in full HD.
If you want the best HD experience stick with Blu Ray, but for convenience AppleTv is great to be honest while I still buy some things on Blu Ray i think some content benefits from full HD some doesn't - YMMV.
Even if Apple produced a 1080p device it would probably only accept such content from iTunes store or home movies as it has very specific and limited format capability.

  • HT3209 If you buy a movie on the IPad in HD(720p) are you able to download in 1080p resolution? Or do you have to buy the 1080p or is there even such a thing?

If you buy a movie on the IPad in HD(720p) are you able to download in 1080p resolution? Or do you have to buy the 1080p or is there even such a thing?

As far as I can tell, yes. I purchased an HD movie on my old Apple TV 2 (720p) and just upgraded to the Apple TV 3 (1080p) and it displays 1080p on the info sheet and plays in that quality, so I have a feeling the same should go for you with your iPad.

  • Why won't Final Cut Pro X export in 1080P

I'm trying to export video in 1080P in Final Cut Pro X 10.1.4. Every time I click the share button it says I'm exporting in 720P. I tried to change it to 1080P and its greyed out. I even tried click share to Apple device in 1080P still 720. I verified all the clips are 1080P. I've never had this problem before its always just done it. Heres a screenshot of the share screen.

I have those. Every day. Thanks for posting your solution instead of just letting it go. Hardly anyone closes their threads around here and it really helps those who come after, those looking for similar issues.

  • 3rd generation Apple TV spontaneously resets to auto video

My Apple TV plays 1080p video beautifully but frequently spontaneously resets to auto, which produces a non-optimal fuzzy screen resolution. I can go into the settings and reset to 1080p, but it is annoying to have to do it so frequently. The Apple TV is attached to a Marantz SR7008 receiver that sends the signal to a Samsung UN75F8000 LED TV. Everything else plays fine and, in fact, the Apple TV is fine over 50% of the time. I've tried switching cables and HDMI ports but no improvement. Any suggestions? Thanks.
