Apple TV - VGA = Sound?

Hi everybody,
While I feel the answer to this question may be a negative one, I am curious of any workarounds that may have been implemented in schools.
We have Interactive Whiteboards in our classrooms, and we are just starting to hook up a few to Apple TV (2nd Generation). Unfortunately, the digital projects on the Interactive Whiteboards only have VGA input, so we are using a HDMI -> VGA adapter to hook them up to the screen. Visually, everything is perfect, but we have no sound due to the HDMI output only feeding into a visual input.
Is there a splitter adapter that can go from HDMI -> VGA + Audio? Or, is there a way of utilising the Digital Out on Apple TV at the same time as the HDMI -> VGA, so we could potentially connect the Digital Out to an external speaker?
Any creative workarounds you have for this issue would be hugely appreciated. Thanks team,
Warm regards,
Craig

Yes, you could connect speakers to the optical port. It will not interfere with the other.

my recently updated iphone 3gs no longer streams pictures/videos to apple tv only sound, can anyone help?

  • TS2090 Apple TV mirroring - sound problem. Tried everything. It's ****.

I'm feeling totally exasperated. I've tried every 'solution' to the inherent Apple TV mirroring sound problem. Why don't Apple just fix it?? All I want to do is be able to view my computer video with sound when i want to. I don't feel that I should have to spend up to and over an hour trying repeated combinations of turning things on and off, entering code into Terminal, etc. EVERY TIME THAT I TRY TO MIRROR THROUGH APPLE TV. It's ridiculous, aside from the cost of buying the unit, I had to upload Mountain Lion despite the fact that my new (Early 2012) imac should have been on spec. That took hours and it still doesn't work. Very dissappointed, Apple have lost my brand loyalty for such an obviously fixable thing. ( I don't think that they read these comments). hope this makes you think twice before buying.  Yours, m

I found a fix for this problem thanks to a friend of mine who I can only assume did a little research online!!
The problem I had was having AirParrot once installed, and after the recent 10.9.2 update, the third party app messed up the way Mirroring was working..
    Here is the fix:
    1. Open Terminal in /Applications/Utilities.
    2. Run these commands respectively:
    sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/APExtFramebuffer.kext
    sudo rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/AirParrotDriver.kext
    sudo rm -rf /Library/Extensions/APExtFramebuffer.kext
    sudo rm -rf /Library/Extensions/AirParrotDriver.kext
This will uninstall kernel extensions related to AirParrot. Other solutions around the web being posted are missing the extensions within /Library/Extensions.
    3. Enter your administrative password when prompted.
    4. Restart your computer.
I tried it once again and it worked like a dream!!!

Many Thanks for all who tried to help, and especially Wasim!!
Hope this helps anyone with the same problem in the future!!

  • Apple brand VGA connector

I purchased an Apple brand VGA connector for my iPad2.  When I plug it into the iPad the message that it is an unsupported part pops up on the screen?  Why is this when it is an Apple brand VGA connector/adapter?

Maybe you have a defective one... have you tried it with another iPad, or another connector on your iPad?

  • Can I stream video to apple tv and sound to airtunes at the same time?

Does anyone know whether I can stream video to apple tv and sound to airtunes (airport express) at the same time? I am trying to build a setup where I watch the video via a projector (connected to ATV) and get sound from my hi-fi system which sits on the opposite side of the room.
Has anyone tried that? Would it work?
    Thanks!

Not controlling things from AppleTV 2
AppleTV 1 used to be able to output its audio to an Express AppleTV cannot.
    Maybe using Airplay from itunes/idevice.

  • IPad 3.2.1 update will no longer let me use the apple iphone VGA adaptor?

Has anyone else have this problem. I was using the apple iphone VGA adaptor I purchased from apple for $49 on my iPad, but since the update I can no longer use it? I dont know if anyone else is having this problem, I don't know if Apple purposely put an update to force you to purchase the "iPad VGA Connector", but if they did thats just plain messed up.

Can you try the modem plugged directly into the master socket without any ADSL filters. You will lose your broadband connection during the test, but it will eliminate any problem with the BT Home hub, or the microfilter.
ADSL does not start until 30kHz, which is well above the range that an analogue modem works at.

  • Connection Help via VGA without apple's VGA adapter

Hi, I just bought a brand new mini online today. I deglected to purchase a mini-dvi to vga adapter thinking i do not need it with my current setup.
--Windows pc with a dual DVI out graphics card(1 dvi-vga adapter connected to a vga cable--->to the monitor)
Can i simply take that DVI-VGA adapter off my pc and throw it on apple's DVI.. plug my monitor cable into that and get video? OR... do i need to run to microcenter when i get my mac just for a 30$ adapter to VGA?
I planned on getting a TV within the next month or two using a DVI-HDMI cable anyway.. so i was trying to make due with what i already had.
    Thanks in advance,
    -Joe

I understand that the mini comes with a mini-DVI adapter, and that would be put to use connecting it to a DVI-VGA adapter that comes with most graphics cards now-a-days. which then would essentially a VGA out port for the mac mini.... in turn being able to connect it to my monitor via VGA cable... correct?
Here is an example of what im talking about: http://img.tomshardware.com/us/2005/11/23/pcinterfaces_101/vgadvi1.jpg
If i connect that to the included mini-DVI to DVI adapter that comes with the mini TO that adapter in the picture TO a basic VGA cable.. technically it should work?
A bit hillbilly rigged but its better than wasting 30$ on a brand new cable i'd never use again after like two weeks.
I've got a day or two before the mac actually comes so I'm just trying to head off any problems ahead of time.

  • Can Apple TV produce sound output on a wireless speaker and a cable-connected speaker simultaneously?

    My situation is this:
I have a one bedroom apartment.  In the main room, I have a Bose Soundlink (via bluetooth, which may be my first problem!!!).  I just got an Apple TV (3) and want to connect it to the TV in my bedroom.  I was considering getting some not-too-expensive speakers to improve upon my TV sound.  One goal of this would be to be able to access my iTunes music and play the same thing in both rooms.
I gather that Apple TV is no good at hosting two or more wireless speaker signals, but I'm hopeful it can manage a wireless and a direct cable input??? Does the TV need to be on to facilitate this or can it just go directly through the Apple TV?  And what use, if any, woudl the optical audio output do for me in this situation?
Thanks for any and all answers!

    Paul
You said the Optical to the home theatre doesn't work, do you mean it had the same sound issue or that the OA to Home Theatre didn't produce any sound?  If the latter then first check the cable is working (red light on the tip once the other end is in the ATV).
Sorry I am not addressing the main question of poor sound as others will know that better, but the OA issue might be solvable and improve your listening, unless of course you have rented The Artist

  • Has Apple addressed poor sound quality issues with new 160GB iPod classic?

I just bought a new 160GB iPod classic, replacing a perfectly good 80GB iPod Video (5.5), thinking that the newer one would be superior to my 3 year old model. I discovered that the sound of the new unit was flat and muddy compared to the older model. I found that the 5th gen iPod video was more "spacial", if that's an appropriate word to use; the bass was more present and more clearly defined, as was the rest of the sonic spectrum. I searched several forums to research this issue and while there were numerous references to this issue, all of the posts I found referred to the original iPod classics (80GB and 160GB) and not the later 120GB classics nor the new 160GB classics like the one I bought. Has Apple done anything to address this issue since the first classics were released or are the new ones still suffering from the same sound quality issues as the original classics?

Based on your observations here, they apparently have not changed the sound quality since the original 160GB classic. I noticed a clear narrowing of the sound stage (ambiance) between the 5.5G 80Gb and my 6G 160GB. You're describing the same characteristic. I don't own the newest 160GB version and came here today to see if it might have improved the sound quality back to the 5.5 spaciousness. Note that the 5.5G has a higher signal to noise ratio than the 6G, making it difficult for me to enjoy it through efficient balanced armature in ear monitors like the Shure SE530s or Ulimate Ears Triple.Fi 10s.

  • Apple TV - No Sound Output

I have an apple tv set up with my macbook and it the past it has worked with no complications until tonight. When I try to link it , it either kicks my macbook off Apple tv altogether or it plays video but doesn't play the sound OR it selects the Apple TV downstairs but the display is still showing on the my TV upstairs.
I've checked to see if the software is updated. I've also gone into settings and selected the audio output to my Apple TV upstairs. It doesn't let me select that, everytime I click it, it automaticaly unselects in and chooses internal speakers. It won't even allow it for a second.
    So confused. I'm on a Mac OS X 10.8.5

I haven't personally had this problem, but I believe in order to hear music through your TV speakers, you have to use the headphone port instead of the AV cable.

  • Apple TV, Bose Sound System, Blu-Ray, FIOS

Got the Apple TV for Xmas this year.  COnnected it to my Samsung TV (there are 3 spare HDMI ports), and get a great picture but no sound at all.  I have been reading the various options, but unclear as to what is correct.  Should I:
Connect ATV to my Bose unit
    Connect ATV to my Blu-Ray
Connect ATV to my Verizon cable unit?
Been reading about the optical cable and not sure about how I would connect this  Just having the ATV connected (the Samsung is hanging over the fireplace so cables look lousy) doesn't look good.  Looking for ideas on how to get this connect so I have sound via the Bose.  THanks to anyone who can help!

  • Apple TV and Sound

Upon setting up Apple TV 2nd generation, using an HMDI connection and WiFi, I can see videos and music albums, etc., but no sound comes through. Another element: With these connections my TV show the connection as DVI. I read somewhere on these discussion boards that sound doesn't work with DVI.
Is anybody else having sound only problems - not playing music or videos?

    Hi All
Just so you know, I took delivery of my ATV this week and couldn't get the sound to work via optical. I have an aging (previously) top of the line Kenwood amp, 145 rms, with all the bells and whistles (Dolby Digital. DTS etc.) but no HDMI. I'm obviously very reluctant to have to change it coz apart from the lack of HDMI, it's a beautiful machine and pushes out plenty of power. I have connected my blu-ray et al via HDMI for picture and coax for sound. Gives me DTS without a hassle.
So ATv arrives and I do the same, HDMI into tv for picture and optical straight into Kenwood for sound. But no sound thru receiver. I'm getting sound thru the tv via the HDMI but the tv is normally set to zero vol anyway. After searching the forums imsaw someone suggesting a cable swop. Admittedly, I had skimped when purchasing the optical cable and had bought a $10 cable. Mistake. Poor connectors either side etc. Yesterday I bought the real deal ($50 cable - 3 feet) and guess what. Sound working now via optical clean as a whistle. I'm getting 5.1 on movies etc. no issues.
So, bottom line, if you're struggling with he optical link to your non HDMi receiver, and you're skimping on the qualiy of the cable, try upgrading the quality of the cable. I hope it works for you as it did for me.
