Apple TV vs Airserver in schools

Hello everyone. I am a Computing Coordinator in a primary school which has just purchased a number of iPads to be used by class teachers and children. In order to mirror the iPads onto the whiteboard I am looking into getting either a set of Apple TVs (1 for each class) or using Airserver. I am trying to find the benefits of Apple TVs compared to Airserver but can't seem to get a clear answer. Could anyone enlighten me as to the benefits of them over Airserver?
Many thanks!

The Mini's would obviously be a lot more expensive. There would be no use of airplay involved in that scenario. The mini would be connected directly to the monitor,  unless you were getting a Mini AND Apple TV in order to mirror the Mini.
The only thing to consider with Apps on an iPad, not all will be enabled for airplay. Mirroring has to be specifically blocked, and this seems to be rare. Mirroring a Mac is at the root of OSX and there doesn't look to be a way for anyone to block anything.

  • Apple recommended content filter for schools

We have a 1 to 1 deployment for students and I am curious what Apple is recommending for Internet Content Filtering. Does anyone have any suggestions of a product we could evaluate? Yes, I have looked at the search engine results but want to see if there are any I am missing or see what Apple suggests.
    Thanks!
    Scott

The enemy of Children on the Internet is not content.
    It is CHAT.
"Naughty pictures" will not arrange to meet you at the mall. "Naughty pictures" will not take you to another state and rape and murder you.
To counter "Naughty pictures", I advocate placing computers so that the screens are visible to casual passers-by. The kids will not dare to put up "naughty pictures" if they know a teacher will look up and see them. And if the students think someone is doing something wrong, they will either gather around and make a fuss, or rat on each other in a heartbeat.
To counter chat, I advocate throwing iChat into the Trash and emptying it. When you have your annual "talk" with students, you remind them:
    1) School Computers belong to the school and are only for school work
    2) that their activities leave a trail and that trail will be checked,
    3) they should have NO expectation of privacy,
    4) they must not provide identifiable personal information or chat with anyone using school computers
    5) anyone who enters themselves onto MySpace or equivalent site, using any means whatsoever, will be subject to disciplinary action.
Our fear is not that kids are bad, or that they do not mean well. Our fear is that kids do not use consistent good judgment. As the adults, we have to make it easier for them to do the right things.
Forget the filters. The antidote to bad stuff happening is adequate set-up, initialization, and supervision. Computers are not baby-sitters -- they are too dangerous for that.
apparently, the p-word for "Naughty pictures" is forbidden here.

  • Setting up Apple TV in school?

I am looking at setting up Apple TV 2 in my school for the 115 staff who are about to receive iPads.
Firstly, Is the method in transmitting the data from the iPad to the Apple TV device secure, eg, no students with iPhones can jump onto the device.
Secondly, can I configure ONLY the classroom iPad to see ONLY the room's ATV2?
    Kind Regards,
    Dave

    Hi,
Apologies all for the lack of commubnication on my part, I have been wrapped up in different projects since, but am now back on this front.
    We have 90 classrooms here.
So my main issue is that, by design, every iPad will be able to see every AppleTV. Without being mean , the bulk of our staff are not the most technologically capable and seeing this will most likely freak then out!
Do any of you run Apple TVs in a school environment, and especially one where teachers change rooms frequently?

  • HT204053 I have recently changed my apple id email address, which was ok however I have recently changed my password and now I have icloud account/sign-in issues, can anyone help?

I changed my apple id email address  last week, not a problem I just entered the correct info on my 6 apple devices for FaceTime, AppStore and iTunes.
The issue now, is that I have changed my appleid password so that the kids couldn't install any apps and charge my credit card.
Now I am getting an icloud authorisation error, it is telling me that the account (old apple id) or password are incorrect.
What have I done and how can I fix it?
Do I have to 'delete account' on my iphone and add a new one? I have just paid for the max icloud storage plan as well.

    I FOUND THE SOLUTION!
I had the same exact problem. I had my old apple ID connected to a school email which did not exist anymore. My ipad was prompting me to put the password in for that ID and I could not delete it from my ipad because the "Find My Ipad" was turned on, once again prompting for password. I called apple and they said this Apple no longer exists and is not in there system, which I knew already. After hours on the phone nobody could help me. Try this.
-Go to create a new Apple ID and use the same email address as the old apple ID which is locked in on your ipad
-Create a new password and all that, it will say it send a verification link to your email, in my case my email no longer exists so I could not do this
    - I called Apple to explain this problem and I asked if they could verify it for me, which they did after I convinced them it was worth a try. The guy told me that the verification shouldnt matter and should still be able to login but he did it anyway. You can try skipping this step but if it doesn't work then go ahead.
-Go to ICloud and click on your account, the email should be grayed out but it should allow you to change that password, put in the new password which you just created.
-This allowed me to sign in to accept the new terms and conditions but it said "unable to conncet to server" so I just backed out and went to "Delete Account" and it worked!
The whole idea is to re-create your old apple ID into Apple's system and then use that new password. The guy at Apple said tons of people called about this problem and nobody could solve it. I thanked him for helping me and he thanked me for helping him. I hope this helps you!

  • Multiple devices on a single Apple ID - is VPP required?

    Hello,
I work in a school that is buying iPads, we currently have 10 which I setup using the apple configurator.
At the moment these iPads are all set up with the same Apple ID (the school one) My main question is will I need to enroll in the volume purchase program in order to use paid apps? and if so does that mean that I will need to create a new Apple ID for every iPad?
These devices belong to the school and will be shared out from a cabinet so it is not acceptable to let an end user configure the device with their own Apple ID.
    Thanks.

The Apple Configurator tool robbed my school of @ 60×4 apps.
Here's my mistake. I bought all the apps needed for the whole school in one lump sum. i.e. 350 copies of Pages. Then happily went to Configurator and loaded the spreadsheet. Installed on all the student iPads. Then need the remaining licenses to gift to the teachers and @ 30 for the cart. NOPE! Once they are loaded in to Configurator you can never get them back. Apple said, “sorry”.
I did this for the iWorks suite, iPhoto, & neu.Annotate before I realized what was happening.
This is what to do, in short. From the VPP account, buy the number needed for exactly what you need, just make sure, it's over 20, even if you only need 11, 20 copies is cheaper than 11 because they are half off at 20 or more. Get the spreadsheet generated by the VPP site for the 20 then buy for the next cart or site, it will generate a new spreadsheet of 20 you can give to the computer and its copy of Configurator.

  • How do I manage two apple ids and iCloud for my teen's iPad?

Before my son turned 13, he used my Apple ID to set up his purchases for his first iPad.  Now he has his own apple ID.  He has his own iPhone and a different iPad for school.  The school wants him to use iCloud to back up everything.
I just set up iCloud but it wants to back up the items from my ID only.  How do I get it to back up from his ID too?
How can I even figure out which items are linked to his Apple ID and which ones are linked to my Apple ID?
For next school year, I want everything to work with his ID, not mine.  I wish I had just made him one in his name when he was 12!
I'm not so worried about the apps, photos, etc.  I am more concerned about his documents from Pages, Keynote, iBooks... I think when he does his schoolwork it is saving to my Apple ID and not his.
I've avoided syncing to the computers because we have 3 users with different IDs and several different devices and after a while it gets really confusing to know what belongs to whom.
I know that a lot of people are frustrated that you can't merge Apple IDs -- seems like Apple ID is built for single people and not growing families who hand down older devices to other family members.

You can see which ID he is signed into for iCloud by going to Settings>iCloud on his device(s) and viewing the ID shown next to Account.  This is the account that his documents are being store in, and the one his device is backing up to (if he is backing up to iCloud).
While it is possible to have more than one iCloud account on a device, there are limitations to the typed of data that additional ("secondary") accounts will sync.  Only the primary account (the one listed in Settings>iCloud) can be used for photo stream, bookmarks, documents, iCloud backup and Find My iDevice.  Because of this limitation, it isn't possible to sync (or "back up") documents from iWork to more than one iCloud account.

  • How to prevent others use their iDevices to remote control apple tv?

    Hi All,
I'm wondering that does anyone know how to prevent others use their iDevices to remote control my apple tv?
    settings
    1. the apple tv is in the school.
    2. all students could access the Internet
    3. The apple tv is sharing the same Internet with students.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The remote app uses homesharing, therefore anyone wanting to control an Apple TV with the remote app would need to know the home sharing ID and password.

  • Why does Apple TV sons using in dorm keep saying password is wrong when the home Apple TV uses same password with no problem

MY son is away at school and the Apple TV I got him to use keeps telling him his password is wrong.  This is the same password we use on the home Apple TV and he wants to be able use the movies, shows etc that have been purchased from this Apple ID.  Please help

Most school's require a login to use the network, and the Apple TV has no browser to accomplish this task. It is likely not connected to the network, which is causing the error. Best to speak to the IT dept

  • Apple TV as an Office Welcome & What's on?

What is the best program to use to create a sign or welcome and agenda usinfg Apple tv.? We have 7 apple tv's in a school great for kids to share their work. Do I need to use a separate laptop for each or can we just use 1 and share it between 7 with  more than message or video playing on each?

You can run several AppleTVs from a single computer's iTunes but quite how many is unclear - I'd say at least five but the more running from the same machine the faster it would need to be to stream to many devices at once, plus your network would need to be robust enough to keep up - preferably wired.
Not clear if you want to mainly display messages/text or video - you could use iMovie for video and Share to AppleTV, and probably use it for slideshows.  iWork would allow you to create a series of slides and export an AppleTV compatible video of the slides though not all transitions work perfectly compared to playing the slides on a computer directly.
Also consider how you are going to control all these things - is someone going to be using a remote, Airplay or will you use some kind of playlist system?

  • Apple TV defaults to "Movies" pane displaying inappropriate cover art

Each time the Apple TV sleeps, the default Apple TV display after exiting a screen mirroring (or Air Play) session is the "Movies" section.  Because the movies section shows a handful of recent movies with their cover art, we are finding a lot of inappropriate images flashing on the screen.  Because our work takes place in education, there are whole classrooms full of students, paretns, and teachers that are exposed to inappropriate images that inculde suggestive images and titles.
My company does one-to-one technology deployments in schools.  We deploy only Apple products and each classroom is equipped with an ATV for screen mirroring purposes.  I continuously have to show my teachers how to move the selection box from the "movies" menu icon to the "Settings" menu icon which displays a clean Logo of the ATV rather than a list of recent movies.
Does anyone know of a setting or a way to make the ATV default to the settings pane rather than movies without manually having to select a different option?
    Thanks!

We use Apple TV at our Christian School and for Children's Church. Is there any way to have something else show up?

  • Apple Configurator and multiple users

I am the Apple admin for a large school district.  I have setup 1200 iPads against some 20 machines (as we have a seperate "configurator station" per school) using a local admin account (the IT maintinence account.  The issue now is that when a control user logs in (IE my LMS specialist who will be handling the iPads from now on), and the machine reports (in configurator) that the connected iPads ARE supervised to that machine.  However, the machine has no control over profiles on the device, even though they had been installed by the other user (on the same machine).
This can't be just my issue, as I am sure several other companies and school districts are using a different (IT) account for initial setup and then releasing iPads into schools or offices.
The only idea I have is to copy the database .store files from application support > com.configurator....  from one user to the other.
Does anyone else have any ideas or solutions to this issue?

My cart iPads are not yet using Configurator however I have been testing. In my test I set up the following and it is working well:
1.supervise and name each iPad with profiles set for wi-fi and applicable restricitions that configurator allows
2.set up one iPad "master" with additional restricitons via settings that Configurator doesn't cover ie don't allow changes to accounts. this also sets the resticitons passcode so a student can not set it
    3.back up the "master"
    4. restore the "master to all of the iPads. this sets the additional restrcitons but does not set the restictions passcode
    5. touch each iPad one time enabling the restrictions and entering a passcode
    6. set Supervise to Do not restore backup
I then set up "users" in configurator as iPad 1, iPad 2 etc. after  the 30 "users" are set up i use assign to check out the fresh iPads to those "users". i then check back in.This creates a backup of "no user data" for each iPad
when the checkout/check in process is used, supervise is set to "do not restore"
the iPads can then be used supervised and at the end of the day or use period i check out the iPads to the above "users" and then check in. this wipes out any data that the student had on the iPad including notes, calender, contacts web pages etc. We will not be saving any student data and this process sets the iPad back to its original state without having to set up restrictions again.
I have always been concerned about students setting calendar events, reminders or notes that are inappropriate and this check out/check in appears to address that concern
