Apple TV vs. Netflix streaming

Can anyone explain why I can watch Netflix movies instantly (including HD) but I have to wait as long as five hours for an Apple TV rental movie to download? Both services use the same network. I have no interest in waiting so long and will never rent another movie from Apple ......

What is your actual internet speed (check www.speedtest.net)
As the others have explained, iYunes works on a fixed rate and will start once enough has loaded so it can play uninteruppted. Netflix adapts the bit rate based on your connection, so if you have a slower connection you may not be actually getting HD quality.

Hi,
I have an "legacy" Apple TV running with iTunes 8.x
and am interested in getting the new Apple TV to give me
Netflix streaming access. (So I would have 2 Apple TVs
running in my media room).
So, question is -- do I need to upgrade iTunes to v10
to get Netflix streaming support on the new Apple TV?
Or do I need iTunes10 for the new Apple TV, regardless?
I've been hesitant to upgrade iTunes as I have had problems
with upgrades in the past (playlists disappearing, AppleTV disappearing,
etc.) I have also seen several postings with people having
issues with legacy Apple TV when upgrading to iTunes 10.

Winston, you seem to be very knowledgable in the tv arena.
Maybe you can help me. My tv stopped connecting or is failing to connect to the itunes store. This occurred yesterday, for no apparent reason. There was absolutely no changes done on my end. I did query apple in regard to a movie that I rented that never appeared, but that was it.
All connectivity is working fine, I can podcast, listen to music, watch previews etc., I just cannot rent or download a movie, as it cannot connect to itunes store. I have deauthorised and reauthorised via itunes 10, and all seems OK, I can sync between itunes and my existing tv, but can no longer download movies or TV shows, as it seems to fail on handshake or authority or something...
Any leads would be greatly appreciated, as I have rented two movies, which I have been billed for, and they have been downloaded, just can't watch them...

Apple TV Netflix Streaming & Other errors

Okay So I got Apple TV for Christmas. But Ive been experiencing very frustrating and upsetting problems. The following problems are very CRITICAL.
1. NETFLIX STREAMING
One of the featured abilities of Apple TV was Netflix Streaming. At first I loved using it, but then I started noticing problems. Half the time I played a netflix video... the video would pause and buffer every few seconds. Time after Time I have to deal with this. And its not my internet connection, because my PS3 can stream Netflix no problem. This is the MOST FRUSTRATING THING ABOUT APPLE TV. A Deal Breaker. I use my PS3 now for Netflix, because I refuse to watch a movie or tv show and have to deal with pausing every few seconds. It ruins watching the show. YOU NEED TO FIX THIS ASAP!
2. Error Cannot Connect To Netflix
Why is it one of the flagship features of Netflix has such a terminal error. Every week or so I have to disconnect (only found out this solution by googling this problem on the net otherwise I would of never found out how to fix Netflix on Apple TV) Apple TV, wait 10 - 15 seconds, reconnect, wait for it to load, and hope I dont get that ' Cannot Connect to Netflix Error". People say it may be netflix but its not. Apple TV cant access Netflix but yet my PS3, iPad, and iPhone can. Apple Please fix this.
THESE 2 PROBLEMS NEED TO BE FIXED ASAP. THEY HAVE BEEN GOING ON FOR MONTH WITH NOT A PATCH TO FIX IT. I didnt get Google TV, Boxee, etc. because I wanted Apple TV. Please dont make me regret my choice.
And the following are secondary concerns:
1. Please allow us to access our Youtube Subscriptions and Favorites faster on Apple TV.
Everytime I select Youtube to watch my subscriptions and favorites ... I have to go through menus to do so. Can they not pop up as soon as Select Youtube. My accounts already on there just let it pop up on the first menu.
2. Apps. Please include apps for Apple TV.
Apps where we can access Hulu, do skype chats, allow for keyboard integration. Allow us to do more with it.
Apple please fix these errors otherwise I have to stop recommending Apple TV and become a Detractor of the product and its support.

To Apple and Netflix,
I have recently purchased 2 Apple TV devices and a Roku XDS and subscribed to Netflix.
The problem I'm having, along with many others in the various forums, is that Netflix is accessed and "Suggestions" and "Previously Viewed" items show up but when I attempt to play a selected item I get a message on screen showing "error 112" and no streaming occurs.
The ATV refers customers to Netflix and Netflix refers customers back to Apple. Which of course isn't a fruitful solution.
Having no email contact for Netflix isn't helpful either. After contacting them on the phone they would not generate a ticket number and would not log my complaint as the system can't record referrals to Apple. They also do not have employee identifiers so you only get a first name of the service representative, I can only assume Netflix wants no record of customer complaints and wants to wear you down by waiting on the phone. Apple support is almost as daunting. You better have your serial number handy or you are going nowhere. So if you are at work and trying to contact support… Good luck.

As a veteran film and TV post production engineer in Burbank, CA, I am a methodical trouble shooter and well versed in negotiating software and hardware from diverse products. I quickly determine my internet connection is solid and bandwidth is adequate (typically between 20 to 30Mbps and in the later hours up to 75Mbps). I check that other streaming channels on that device are functioning properly such as "Radio" and "YouTube". I can stream Netflix from the Roku. I can even stream Netflix from my second Apple TV device. But the other Apple TV continues to exhibit the same symptom "error 112". I can usually get around the problem with a couple of hard reboots of the Apple TV, but not always. The problem is not confined to one ATV, either device may exhibit "error112".
I will also be posting this open letter on Amazon and Facebook and hope to post your response and solution as well.

Apple TV started having streaming issues with Netflix

Several days ago my Apple TV is no longer providing consistent streaming throught Netflix. Before that, I had great streaming through all content for many months.
Issues, configuration and some actions already taken:
Video quality starts suffering, then some pauses/buffering begins.
I have tried the same Netflix account, content and network to trace the issue and found out through my Macbook Air and iPad and the streaming is excellent.
My Apple TV is connected to my ISP through an Ethernet cable at 200 Mbps (tested @ Speedtest.net)
I already restarted several times, and restored once my Apple TV.
Software is updated since it became available.
Yesterday, I found a post which recommended to manually setup my DNS to 008.008.008.008 which I did and worked great at that time, but todays problems are back with that fixed DNS and with Auto setup.
I hove someone here can help me with some further advice, or perhaps Apple very soon releases a fix. Seems that the latest update improved Airplay consistency to deliver both video and audio and not only video, but might have broken Netflix streaming.

Yes, I'm having the exact same issue since the latest update. I thought it was my internet connection but it worked perfectly fine in my ipad and macbook air.
I also have 2 Apple TV's and the problem is in both of them. I really hope apple fixes this issue ASAP.
In the meantime, if you wanna watch your netflix content on your apple tv with good streaming and you have an iPad/iPhone with netflix on it. I recommend Airplay mirroring the iOS device and then opening netflix, it will airplay the video content and the iphone/ipad screen will function as a remote control with all the settings and stuff...its kinda cool...the only bad thing is that you can't turn off the iPad/iPhone screen or it will pause the movie.

3. If you mean your ATV1, there are more than one hard drive size. If you mean the new ATV2, it doesn't have a hard drive.

No sound on some Netflix streaming on apple tv?

I sometimes, can't get audio on Netflix streaming using apple tv2. But, the audio comes through using my iPad 1. I'M using century links 2 wire router.

You'll need to wait until Netflix is enabled for the Apple TV in your location, I've heard that it may be the end of the year.

Why would Lightroom video capabilities/iTunes import/Netflix streaming/Photoshop all stop working at once?

Several programs all stopped working at the same time and will only work (briefly) right after I've restarted my computer including:
- iTunes audio cd importing
- Lightroom video importing and playback
Netflix streaming (on both Safari and Chrome) won't work and Photoshop (CS4) won't open at all.
Videos work without a problem in: Quicktime, iMovie, Final Cut Pro, and Bridge CS4 and CS6. YouTube also works without a problem.
Maybe the problems are conincidence, but this seems like it is posisbly a software problem with my computer, not my programs.
I have tried reinstalling Ligthroom and resetting the preferences files but they don't help.
The only things that I can think of that happened is that I:
1. downloaded my own videos from my own YouTube acocunt after my external hard drive failed and maybe there was a virus?
2. I deleted some programs with "Clean My Mac 2" and maybe it deleted some crucial file someplace?
I am running a 2009 13" MacBook Pro with a 2.53 Ghz processor and 4 GB RAM and Mountain Lion (everything is up to date).

I had problems with streaming until I changed the WiFi channel that I was using. The original one conflicted with my neighbor. After that, MOST of my streaming problems vanished. Occasionally, a movie would pause for more buffering and I eventually ran an ethernet cable from the Apple TV to my Apple Extreme (to eliminate the Wifi). I have not had a single problem since then (except to repair the drywall after running the ethernet from one floor to another). :-)

Netflix streaming video freezes but audio is ok...

When I'm watching Netflix streaming videos, Firefox video freezes. Audio is fine and I can continue hearing the video. Firefox is the only browser that does this. IE9 and Google Chrome plays without the video freezing. I love Firefox and would like to continue using it. I get tired of having to change browsers just to be able to watch streaming video. New Apple TV and Netflix

Netflix streaming has just arrived in Canada and the new Apple TV seems a great way to easily access the Netflix content.
On Apple's Canadian website they clearly show that Netflix can be streamed on the Apple TV +"...Since Apple TV lets you access your Netflix account directly from your HDTV, you can ditch all the computer-to-TV adapters and skip straight to the part where you press Play."+
The confusion lies with Netflix, their website doesn't show the Apple TV as a supported device, so I called them today to ask if the new Apple TV was supported and they said that it isn't!
Has anyone tried the new Apple TV with Netflix in Canada?

I completely disagree with you vazandrew , it WILL work with a simple software update (any techno babble bs that says it won't is strictly just that, BS). It's like saying the Roku streaming devices have been a superior product over the ATV 1st gen because as you know, Roku's have insanely great processing power in their devices.
Which brings me to my next point: Why can I stream Netflix on last years model of an iPod Touch? Processing power? Hmmm, UHHH NO! A software update by a third part developer nonetheless. No coincidence there.
Personally, I would be highly disappointed if they don't upgrade through a software update. Furthermore, I think the lack of storage is a step in the wrong direction. I don't want to have to stream from another device or computer the content I have purchased, I prefer to sync my content and keep it on the ATV until I decide otherwise.
If there isn't an update by the holiday season, then I'll just get a Roku device. In the end, it has better streaming services and options sans the compatibility with iTunes.

What are the pros and cons between apple tv verses netflix?

Netflix is cheaper as it's a subscription streaming service. iTunes is Pay Per View.
Netflix adapts to your connection and can be of lower quality. iTunes content is fixed rate so it alays produces the same result.
If you are looking for new releases then iTunes is suggested. Netflix is best for older movies, and TV shows.
For Netflix 3mbps is recommended, higher if you wish to view HD.
iTunes requires 8mbps for instant 1080P rentals, 6mbps for 720p, 3mbps for SD. If you have a slower connection you will need to wait before you can view.

I'm not in front of an ISA at this point, but as soon as I am I'll respond on the logging question.
In the interim, I do have some questions. One thing to keep in mind is that with the vast differences in OS and apps, it's still very possible that laptops work and tablets don't and the issue is still in the network even though they're going over the same mediums.
Thanks for the detail on the current network. I have concerns that you may have double or possibly triple NAT/PAT'ing going on here. When you mentioned WAPs being plugged into your switch, are those WAPs handing out IPs or are they more like LWAPs just handing out IPs from the ISA?
What might be helpful here is if you can mask all the IPs for all the devices but still provide what is currently configured using public and private IPs. An example might be replacing 192.168.x.x with 10.1.x.x for private IPs and I like to use 1.1.1.1 and 2.2.2.1 for Public IPs. Using this kind of methodology, would you mind providing IP Address and subnet masks for each interface of each device (router, firewall, switch, WAP(s), PC, laptop, tablet, etc.)?

Netflix streaming hangs AEBSn

I have a TiVo hooked to a LAN port of an AEBSn on which Netflix streaming used.
The connections are
802.11n (5Ghz) LAN
FIOS Router -> (Ethernet Cat5e) ->TCn -------------> AEBSn -----> Tivo
This AEBSn freezes and the so does the streaming and disconnects from the N connection.
After a restart, it will reconnect again.
The debug logs on AEBSn show just key rotations and connections to an NTP server (time.apple.com) and then just stops stating cannot connect to time.apple.com.
What should I look for?
If the Tivo is directly connected to the AT router, it does not freeze.

That happens on my MBA as well -- depending on what you mean by choppy. On my computer it will play well, and then from time to time suddenly skip a part. It doesn't seem to happen on my MacBook, and definitely not on my PC (Netflix uses a Microsoft technology, and it seems to just work better under windows).

It's exactly as I stated. Whenever I try to drag these kinds of loops (ESX24 / software instrument loops? the ones marked in green with the white music note next to them) from the loop browser into the timeline a message comes up saying Audio Not Found for that loop. And a new track is created automatically when loops are dragged into the timeline, so I'm not creating some other random / synth instrument track so I'm not sure what the deal is... But perhaps I'll try creating a software instrument track first and then drag the loop into that track and see what happens - maybe there's something with the default settings that automatically creates audio tracks whenever loops are imported?
