  • Apple keyboard versus vista keyboard

    Hi,
At my work we use Windows Vista and Office 2007, at home I use an Apple Mac book + Leopard and Office for Apple 2004. Changing between the keyboards on a daily basis is rather confusing. Under Vista I like to use Ctrl Z, Ctrl cursor, Ctrl delete etc etc and Alt F4, Alt Tab etc etc. Under Leopard it is different. I cannot make any settings at my work. Would it be possible to change the keyboard settings of my Mac book in order to have that keyboard functioning like it were a Vista Keyboard, while still working with Leopard?
    Thanks very much in advance,
    Peter

Hi Peter, Yes you can change the setting to match. Open System Preferences>Mouse & Keyboard. Select Keyboard Shortcuts from the selection in the upper half of the window. Scroll to the bottom and highlight Application Keyboard Shortcuts the click the "+" sign in the lower left. Choose the application or other(MS is in it's own folder so you need to pick Other) and browse for MS Word.Excel...
then type in the action...copy(For example) then add the click on the box below and hold don the "Cont+C" Repeat this for all the commands you need.

  • How to create DVD image of Apple .dmg on Vista?

    hi all,
I downloaded the SDK for ios from the Vista machine, and am hoping to burn the dvd iso image onto a disc so that the G3 powerbook/OSX can read it.
Ive searched and tried several programs, MagicISO seemed to be able to but this feature requires the $34 purchase. i put the iso'd disc in the G3 and it didnt even see it.
Another thing... in Vista its easy to look at the dvd drive by opening the explorer window, but in OSX nothing i could find would open some window to look at the dvd drive. it made a sound like it was trying to read the disc then gave up. In Vista if you click on the dvd icon it will give some error about the disc but in OSX does it simply not do anything?
Well the important thing is to get this large image file onto a dvd so the G3 powerbook can read it, thanks for any suggestions!

I downloaded the SDK for ios from the Vista machine, and am hoping to burn the dvd iso image onto a disc so that the G3 powerbook/OSX can read it.
Don't bother. The SDK can only be used on an Intel Mac. If for some reason you want to do it anyway, don't convert the dmg. Just burn it as if it was any type of file.
Another thing... in Vista its easy to look at the dvd drive by opening the explorer window, but in OSX nothing i could find would open some window to look at the dvd drive.
Only programs such as the System Profiler and Disk Utility will show a drive when it has no available volumes on the Mac.

  • ITunes Syncing with Apple TV in Vista

I have all my Pictures on a Separate Media Drive on my Computer. All the pictures are arranged in folders by the dates they are taken. I have this drive shared on my network and the drive added as a folder in my iTune 8.0 Library.
When I sync my iTunes with my Apple TV all the music file, movies gets copied but not this Media Drive with Photos.
I did a test by pointing to the pictures folder under my user name in the 'C' drive through the iTunes > Apple TV > photo Tab, and it copied the two pictures that I had there to the Apple TV.
The iTunes > Apple TV > Photo Tab, sees this Media drive with the picture folers arranged by dates and lets me select the folders and starts to sync when I click apply. I have tried this repeatedly and let my Apple TV and computer on several times overnite, reset the Apple TV but dit not work, and the Apple TV does not stop syncing.
When I had the same setup on my XP computer all my Photos folders arranged by dates all 9000+ pictures could be viewed on the Apple TV.
I appreciate all your help to solve this problem.

I have a similar problem. ATV1 (3.0.2), itunes 10, connected via wireless time machine (hardwired to router) + airport express wireless extender. ATV showing in itunes menu. All TV shows, movies, music etc showing on ATV (not sync'd) EXCEPT 4 episodes of one TV show that was purchased as a series on iTunes (not on the ATV).
I have also had the firewall error - intermittently.
Have rebooted iMac. Have factory reset ATV and re-set up. Tried just sync'ing the 4 episodes I want to watch. No luck. Tried marking episodes as watched. No luck. rebooted everything. Twice.
ATV1 accesses all other info on iTunes (music, movies etc).
    Infuriating.
    Any ideas?

  • 15" MacBook Pro (Late 2008) Hard Freezing & Apple Refusing Support

    Hi all,
I have tried installing Microsoft Windows XP / Vista / Vista SP1 32-bit and 64-bit on my 15" Unibody MacBook Pro, and in all instances the machine has hard locked up / froze randomly, which can only be rectified by a hard reboot. Sometimes the machine locks up within 5 minutes of turning it on, other times it may be after an hour when browsing the Internet. Most times it will lock up when actually installing Windows - usually during the 'Expanding files..' stage.
The lockups happen even when simply running the basic Vista install with no other software, not even the BootCamp drivers. Installing the BootCamp drivers has no effect as the machine also freezes after I have installed them also.
Bizarrely, OSX works fine on the same machine. I am suspecting a hardware issue with the hard disk (bad sectors?) or SATA controller given the point that it locks up most frequently at.
I have reformatted the BootCamp partition on the machine a number of times now, and installed a fresh copy of Vista every time to no avail.
Frustrated at getting nowhere, I took my MacBook Pro into an Apple store to the Genius Bar on two occasions.
On the first occasion, the staff member dealing with me went into defensive mode as soon as I mentioned running Windows via Boot Camp. He stated that Apple do not support Windows issues and that I had to contact Microsoft. At no point did they attempt to diagnose if it was a hardware issue, despite it locking up during the Windows installation, which to me certainly points to a hardware issue.
I then called up AppleCare, spoke with level 1 and 2 technicians, but they basically told me the same thing - sorry, we don't support Windows, go and talk to Microsoft.
The second time at the Genuis Bar was a little more succesful, as I demonstrated the laptop locking up. The genius then repartitioned and reinstalled Vista on the laptop only to see it lock up 13% into expanding files. He told me that if I hadn't got a customised machine that he would swap it out straight away, however because I ordered online and specified the 2.8GHz CPU and SSD disk, I had to call AppleCare. He made a note on the incident report recommending a hardware replacement.
Today I called up AppleCare again and although the support technician was very sympathetic and helpful, after speaking to a number of departments he was unable to resolve my problem satisfactorily (i.e. repair, replacement or refund) and suggested that I write a letter of complaint to Apple Operations Europe.
He also said that my problem was down to a security update issued as a patch by Microsoft, which I can't say I agreed 100% with, but went with it. He said that Apple only support Vista in a configuration that was valid at the time of relase of the MacBook Pro's, and that they don't support Vista with any future updates! Curious about this, I installed Vista (non-SP1) and the same issue occurred.
Finally, I borrowed a friend's MacBook Pro and have been testing it side by side with mine. My friend's laptop works perfectly whereas mine locks up frequently.
Given all of the troubleshooting I have performed, including trying the same thing on an identical laptop with no adverse effects, I have come to the conclusion that this is a hardware issue, not a software incompatibility.
Despite all the above, Apple refuses to acknowledge that this might be a hardware problem. I don't care what the resolution is - repair or replacement - I just want a working laptop!
I have been an Apple convert since 2 years ago, recommending their products to friends, family and colleagues. I've never had a bad experience up until now, however this incident has certainly made me reconsider my view of the company.
Whilst browsing the Apple support forums, I came across a number of people with identical issues to those that I am experiencing, all without a solution or acknowledgement from Apple. I have included links to these discussions below in the hope that Apple might take a look and comment on them.

There are many more discussions pertaining to the same issue on the support forum.
On the Apple website (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bootcamp.html) it states:
'Boot Camp supports the most popular 32-bit releases of Windows XP and Windows Vista. When you use either operating system on your Mac, your Windows applications will run at native speed. Windows applications have full access to multiple processors and multiple cores, accelerated 3D graphics, and high-speed connections like USB, FireWire, Wi-Fi, and Gigabit Ethernet.'
Boot Camp 2.0: Which versions of Microsoft Windows are supported?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1888
You can install the following Microsoft operating systems via Boot Camp 2.0 or later.
Microsoft Windows Vista (64 bit) (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) on certain Mac Pro and MacBook Pro computers
Boot Camp: Macs that work with 64-bit editions of Microsoft Windows Vista
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1846
Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit editions are supported on certain Intel-based Macs via Boot Camp, which is included with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
These Macs support 64-bit editions of Windows Vista:
    • Mac Pro (Early 2008)
    • MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2008)
    • MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2008)
    • MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2008)
    • Mac Pro (Early 2009)
    • MacBook Pro (17-inch Early 2009)
Clearly my 15" MacBook Pro supports Windows Vista 64-bit, and my understanding is that Apple should have tested this configuration thoroughly as part of the hardware development QA process. In order to sell a product advertised as supporting a particular feature, surely you must support customers who run into problems using the machine for the advertised purpose?
Does anyone know the configuration of Windows Vista 64-bit running on the 15" MacBook Pro that Apple supports?
Has anyone else had luck getting support for these hard lock ups?
Sorry for the rant - I'm just not feeling the Apple love right now

hi, good to know that other people also having problems with the late 2008 MacBook Pro.
I have the following problem which is definately related to the chipset. i recently bought the P256 CMFSSD-256GBG2D and the performance on mac os x was really poor. installation took 20 minutes from an usb stick. i thought the ssd was broken, but its definately not. i removed a 2 gb ram module out of my mbp and tada the ssd runs at full speed. i also put the ssd in a friends macbook pro 4,1 with 4gb ram and "INTEL" chipset and everything worked. after testing the ssd in nearly 8 different systems, desktop computers notebooks netbooks, i definately can say, my ssd works, but not in my nice macbook pro. after opening a thread in the corsair forum, which also got me no positive feedback, i called the hotline here in germany. the guy on the phone said "i will take care of the problem", after 40 minutes on line, getting no answer, i hung up.
and to make things clear, my macbook runs fine with 4gb ram and a normal hdd on mac os x 10.5.7 and windows xp sp3.
here is the link to the corsair forum:

  • IPod nano won't turn on or be recognized in iTunes or Vista

We recently upgraded to Windows Vista, so I downloaded iTunes 7.2, then plugged in my ipod which was working fine, then it said it had to be updated, but first I needed to update something in windows vista. So I updated Vista and also looked in the help section for ipod and read this:
Microsoft has released an update for Windows Vista that addresses a situation where ejecting iPod from Windows Explorer or by using the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature in Windows Vista could corrupt your iPod. Apple recommends Windows Vista customers who own an iPod install this software update. For information on how to install this Microsoft hot fix, refer to the "Update your software" section below. Tip: iPod can always be ejected safely by choosing Eject iPod from the Controls menu within iTunes.
So, I thought that my ipod would get ruined so I did the "eject ipod" from the control menu in itunes, and after that my ipod never turned on again. What happened, did I do something wrong?
I did the 5 R's already and it does not turn on. It is not even in my computer (device manager) and its not even being recognized in itunes. It just disappeared and it won't turn on. Please help!!!
    Thanks in advance.
    Dell   Windows Vista

I'm having a similar problem with my Ipod (40GB, now discontinued) here's my problem:
My hard drive would spin up and then down and then up and then it would turn off. Also I would turn it on and flip to a song, it would be OK and then if I went to flip to another one the screen would freeze on me for a few seconds, then it would work then continue doing that until I got it to turn off. It did that for a few days and then the other day I turned it on and it wouldn't take me to my music screen and it came up with an Ipod that was dead and a link under it. It did this for a while and now I can't get it to work either, I turn it on now and it comes up with a folder and the apple support website and when I tired restarting it, the screen would come up with a check mark and say "Disk Mode" at the top and "OK to disconnect" below the check mark, and now Itunes doesn't recognize it and the hard drive spins and it goes on acting like iTunes sees it when in truth it doesn't.
    Hope someone can help!

  • ITunes & Windows Vista

As far as I can see, there's still no way to solve compatibility problems between iTunes and Windows Vista. I can't even install iTunes 7.1.1. ("no win32 application","no VBScript installed"), and so, my 30GBipod still waits to be fed again. Could it be that this is kind of a strategy of Apple, not to offer a compatible version to Vista or even to inform about what's going on and what's the reason of the big delay? If yes, then let me tell you: I won't and can't buy an ibook or other apple hardware, and if this is not getting better, I won't buy anything from apple anymore... like possibly thousands of other disappointed customers! So please, fix it and communicate! Thanks a lot!

Could it be that this is kind of a strategy of Apple, not to offer a compatible version to Vista or even to inform about what's going on and what's the reason of the big delay?
Thats just ridiculous. Apple has been very adamant that iTunes is not compatible currently with Vista and that they are working with Microsoft to fix compatibility issues. If you think that there is a conspiracy than you are very wrong. Apple just added vista support to Boot camp. If they were not interested in Vista compatibility they would never had dome this.
You are simply expecting too much from a maker of a huge piece of software. I do know that Microsoft has also been releasing patches that improve iTunes compatibility.
You must be patient Apple is not going to abandon a large portion of its user base. That would be suicidal.
Don;t forget that there is still alot of programs that aren't completely compatible with Vista yet.

  • Can't re-install quicktime on Vista

I was running into consistant problems with Quicktime updates. So I manually removed Quicktime and all other Apple software from Vista.
Downloaded the latest Quicktime installer, but...
It will not work. Error message keeps stating that Quicktime.MSI is needed.

With a missing QuickTime.msi message, download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from Microsoft:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install CleanUp"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any QuickTime entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC, and try another QuickTime install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Just installed Vista 32-bit

Hi i just installed Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit and i installed the ethernet driver for my MBP, but when i try to connect to the internet nothing happens in device manager it says its up to date. Also I have read everywhere that bootcamp is supposed to offer a burn for a drivers disc, well mine never did that so is there anywhere where i can get the vista 32-bit drivers for this thing id really like to use it for some things that i need windows for. Thanks

Put the OS X installation disc in the SuperDrive with it booted in Vista, then run setup.exe from the disc to install the drivers. After that, run the Apple Updater in Vista to update to the latest drivers (it's in the Vista Program Directory, somewhere).

  • I-Pod Touch & Windows Vista 64 Bit

    Hello,
I recently bought an I-Pod touch as a christmas gift. When I got home I tried connecting and syncing music to my I-Pod touch, but I always get error messages saying 'the proper drivers are not installed' and Itunes will not recognize my Touch. All computer in my house are Windows Vista 64 Bit. Is there anything I can do? Is Apple working on Vista 64 bit drivers?

I'm in the exact same boat (christmas present and all). I am currently using an -ancient- laptop that had 98 on it... struggled to install xp on it, just to be able to sync. Which is every bit as awkward as it sounds.
After finding out that this has been a problem since the US release of the iPhone, seriously thinking about finding out what apples return policy on misreading the fine print on their system requirements is like. -Sigh-.

  • Quicktime codecs + Vista = BSOD

    Hey Apple folk,
When can we expect a solution for the problems the QuickTime codecs encounter in Vista? And yes, the incompatibility is an Apple problem.
    -- Vista users

Be sure you cleaned up the registry: I use nCleaner, the best for Vista! On the net I've found this http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab
Try to run its install and see if it re-adds ActiveX control. Check in IE7's Tools menu the active components...
I personally have had to RE-FORMAT my Vista parition (still young, phew!) and reinstall everything because once I installed, uninstalled, and then re-installed QT 7.1.6 IE7 didn't show PNG images anymore and embedded qt video also.
In my humble opinion this version 7.1.6 still makes a messy in Vista's registry, so use it with caution! And NEVER try to uninstall it!
Now I have successfully installed iTunes+QT 7.1.6 and they work as expected under Vista, except QT that crashes with some old movs and IE7 in particular that ALWAYS crashes on close/quit (quicktime.qts error!) after the plugin has been executed...
Apple, we definitely need a fix for Vista, please!
