Apple TV2 - rental system "needs improvement"

Hi...I own an iPod Nano, an iPod Touch, two iPhones, an iPad, and two Apple TVs (one new#1, one old-the big first one) -- not to mention four Apple Towers and a laptop. Suffice it to say.. I support Apple; I love Apple. Go Apple!
But the Apple TV2 leaves me a bit perplexed.
First, let me say that I like the little black box and the interface on screen is much better especially since it doesn't default to other people's content all the time (that was annoying on the old one). Plus my playlists properly sync (again, didn't on the old one unless I replaced the whole playlist again and again) And so I do not miss the syncing on the new unit. Well done.
But..about two weeks ago when I was doing some chores I thought I'll rent a movie and watch it while I folded laundry. So I picked one and rented it right on the AppleTV2 and it said, to my shock, it would take 6 hours to download!. (I have 30mbs download speeds). But given I rented it already "thanks for the money -see ya later" was of a splash of cold water. Imagine going to the video store, giving my money and then the kid behind the counter says "Thanks. Don't worry. I'll drop it off at your house at 2AM".
About a week about I rented another movie for my iPhone. Thought I'd watch it alone. But my wife was drawing and wanted my company so I decided to move it to my AppleTv2. Wait..can't seem to do that. Won't accept it. I thought it had to do with it being SD for the iPod. A disclaimer about quality would have sufficed..but "nope" was what I had to live with.
So I thought, 'to **** with it" and the next day rented it again but this time I was smart (or so I thought) - I rented it on my COMPUTER ahead of time in HD and had it ready in my Library.
So I went upstairs, chose MY library which is authorized to play my music, TV shows and whatever else on MY AppleTV2 and after a long spinning wheel of consideration sat on the screen "This content is not authorized to play on this device" appeared which shut me down yet again.
What? It's the same account. Same house. Same person. Same Visa card!
Now..I'm a reasonable guy. I get that the only way that Apple got studios to sign on board was pretty tight security protocols and, quite frankly, unreasonable 48hour rental periods (what?!? does the data have to get back to Apple so they can rent it again?).
But this nonsense of per-device rental makes me want to waste time peer-sharing my movies and convert them instead. It's less trouble (notice I said trouble - not less MONEY. Take note. It's the service guys. Apple-you know this better than most).
As I said..I love Apple...but their rental experience spoils the movies.

"You did make mention of rental limitations in your post."
????? Ya..I think I did..it's what started the post.
"I don't see the use in pointing a finger."
It's not about blame. It's targeting the source of the problem. If someone...well..let's say YOU...said to me "Your settings on your computer need to change to blah blah blah.." I wouldn't take it as blame as much as identifying the problem.
If Apple products don't let me share between my computer and an Apple device and all evidence seems to point to a restriction on the device by Apple (for whatever reason) I don't think I should label it an Act of God and move on.
I think I made it pretty clear from the get-go I'm an Apple FAN. A big one! And I've supported ($$$) my team in many ways.
My disappointment stems from what appears to be a stranglehold on how I share my media on my devices use my account (one person). That's all.
Imagine if, on the outset, iTunes would never let you use the same purchased music (when it was DRM) on your iPod and your iShuffle. How popular a decision would that have been?
Well..now I want to share a DRM movie between my computer (with my account) and my AppleTV2 (with my account).
If it helps to call it blame...okay I BLAME APPLE. But my choice in phrasing is more like a question:
why is it doing this?
Am I doing something wrong?
This doesn't seem like it should work this way.
If the answer is: ya..you're doing something wrong and here it is - great!
If the answer is: ya..it's supposed to be like this but here's WHY and what you haven't considered IS blah blah blah blah --then okay!

  • I want to buy an Apple TV device but I need to be sure of its benefits. I have contracted a Satellite TV. Is it true that if I connect Apple TV to system, I can watch TV through IPad wherever by using wireless and App Remote

I want to buy an Apple TV device but I need to be sure of its benefits. I have contracted a Satellite TV. Is it true that if I connect Apple TV to system, I can watch TV in my IPad wherever by using wireless and App Remote??

If you have an iPad 2 you can wirelessly mirror it to your TV via the ATV device. If you have an iPad 1 then you can use airplay but not all apps are enabled to push video, as the developer needs to do this.
You can also view all local content from iTunes or your iPad, pushed via airplay/home-sharing.
The other services available are iTunes movie rentals, TV shows (past purchases viewable from the cloud), Photo Stream, Netflix, Vimeo, Podcasts, Youtube, Sports etc.

  • Movie Rental iTunes Store - Apple TV2

    1. When you go to rent a movie and get notice that it will take 1-2 hours before you can view the movie, when the movie is ready for viewing how long does it hold before you have to start over?
    2. If you have rented a movie but missed the view window on your Apple TV2 is there any way you can download that rented movie to your computer, so you can view it on home sharing from your computer next time?

    1. It should remain ready for viewing until you are ready to watch it, unless you navigate to something else or turn the Apple Tv off.
    2. If you want rentals to download to the computer, you need to rent them from the computer.

  • Apple TV2 missing analog audio output for multi-zone system

Found out the hard way that most receivers can't support digital audio in multiple zones (i.e., Zone 2). Since Apple TV2 (ATV2) dispensed with any analog output, if you have a whole-house system that depends on mult-zone to distribute audio to various speakers, you won't be able to use ATV2 to stream music to anything other than Zone 1. The only outputs are HDMI and optical (both digital audio). I think I found a work around (which, of course costs more money) which is a "de-embedding" device from Atlona that takes HDMI in and splits out the audio to analog and passes the HDMI through to the receiver. The analog audio output then lets me connect to the analog in on the receiver so it can stream to all zones. I figure Apple just didn't have enough real estate on the new product to make room for analog, but it's a pain. Hope this helps someone. If anyone knows a better work-around, I'd love to hear it.

I have the same issue with a MacMini I use for music. My solution was to use an inexpensive optical splitter - one feed to the optical input of my receiver and the second to a DAC. Then run standard RCA audio cables from the DAC to the analog Zone 2 inputs.
Here is a link for a DAC
    http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&pid=6884&seq=1&format=2
They should have the splitter as well.

  • Cannot play rental on my Apple TV, says I need to authorise, which it is.

cannot play a movie rental on my AppleTV, says I need to aurthorise my computer which it already is, have been playing rentals for the last 2 years. I have de-aurthorised and then aurthorised but no luck. Have the latest updates as well. Anyone have any ideas.

There is no storage in the Apple TV so you need to load content each time you view. However it only needs to load a small portion before it starts. If you do want to store it you can access your purchase in iTunes and stream via home-sharing.

  • Apple tv2 movie rental cache drops off and won't finish downloading (not related to internet connection)

I'm having an issue with my apple tv2 when renting movies.  This isn't with home-sharing but just renting movies only with the apple tv.  We've done this with 10 or so movies up until the issue so it has worked in the past.
What happens is that the movie downloads to a certain point and then the cache bar goes immediately to the end of the progress bar like the whole movie is downloaded.  The movie will play to a certain point, say the 9 minute mark, and then the picture just freezes with no more sound but the progress bar tracker continues along like it's still playing.  This has happened on multiple movies now.
We've spoken to support about this and tried a variety of troubleshooting ideas.  Unplugged, reset, restored, updated firmware, etc. with no luck.  The download will restart but freezes at the exact second that it did before while showing that the cached download is complete.  We've checked the internet connection with other devices and there's no connection problem at all.  Reset the router as well for good measure but no change.
I know we can try renting and downloading on the computer first and then sharing with the apple tv but I would prefer to know why it's not working on the apple tv itself.
    Any ideas would be great.
    Thanks

Yeah, that's what we thought too so we got a refund (by using the report a problem link and explaining what happened) and tried a different movie with the same result.  Used the link again after the second movie didn't work and went through pretty much the same troubleshooting steps with them.
Basically the only solution offered so far has been to take it to a licensed apple retailer for them to take a look.

  • Ipad makes network/home sharing available for Apple TV2 and iphone

I've always had issues using home sharing on my Apple TV2; it would often tell me i needed to turn on home sharing on my desktop even though it was on.  Ususally restting the router and restarting iTunes would resolve the issue.  I would have to do this everytime i tried to play something on my Apple TV2 from my desktop.  THen i got an iPad 1 and it could find the shared folder instantly, when it would find it, it would all of a sudden make the Apple TV2 find my desktop (sometimes the Appl TV2 would hang there for 15 minutes searching for the desktop, i would go to videos on the iPad, and then "bang" the Apple TV would work).  I just got an iphone 3gs and upgraded to iOS 6 (had the following issue with iOS 5, too) and when i go to the video app it is blank and says there are no videos on my iphone with a button for the store at the bottom.  One time i hit the header reading "Videos" at the top and all of a sudden it listed which libraries i wanted to access, iPhone or Shared.  Couldn't get that to happen again until just now i started the trusty old iPad and pointed it to the shared folder and all of a sudden my iPhone showed me the shared location again.  Is there a way to access the home sharing network consistently without having to bot up the iPad everytime, especially on tyhe iPhone where there isnt a real location for doing this as far a I can tell.  Everyone always refers to the old "iPod" app before they switched it to "Music" and would say you go to "More" and selected "Shared" but those options arent avaiable anymore.  Thanks.

Follow up:  It appears to have been caused by the Bose system.  We have multiple areas that can be controlled by the Bose console.  Playing another area (outdoor speakers) via one source (satellite) was interfering with playing the Apple TV in the den on the television.  Apparently.

  • Problem connecting Apple TV2 to projector when passing through Sony Sound Bar

I'm having problems getting my Apple TV2 to work now that I'm passing it through my new Sony HT-CT150 Sound Bar to my Epson Megaplex Projector MG-850 (720p) Projector. I keep getting a "Not Supported" error on my projector - as opposed to a "No Signal" error which is what happens if I was to unplug the Apple TV.
My HDMI cables are all new and latest specs. I can connect the Apple TV directly to projector with either cable and it works fine. I have a 6 ft HDMI connecting the Apple TV to one of the Sony Sound Bar's 3 HDMI inputs and then a 40 ft. HDMI running from the sound bar's HDMI out to the projector's single HDMI input. Oddly, if I reverse the cables, it seems to work. Same two cables - just switching which one is connected to the Apple TV and which is connected to the projector. (I need the length to get to where my projector is positioned. Though I might be able to get by with a 30 ft. cable if length might be the issue.)
Anyway I think it must have something to do with the HDMI handshake or the lenth of the cables but don't know enough about it and have no idea why switching which cable comes first would fix the problem.

Ok,  I will ask the question in another way... My apple tv has one hdmi, and it goes to my hd projecter.. But projecter has no speakers, and as a result I've no sound at the moment. I am looking for a clear direction to go in, to solve lack the of any sound.. My only option seems to be, using the optical out from the apple tv.. I don't have  any equipment with this conecter. And I've never used optical before..   If i buy an, optical to twin phono converter and then I can plug into a large powered speaker I've got in my living room. And I will have big sound easily..?? Do I have any other reasonable options for optical enabled speakers, or AirPlay speakers or something simple I'm not aware of that will give me sound easily.. I don't want a messy 5:1 system, my house is very tidy, and I want to keep it that way. .  Only having this optical out is frustrating, and I need to get my head round the options I have.   Anyone understand from experience how to use the optical apple tv out.  Also, not  using anything but apple tv, no dvds, or tv , just apple tv and my ipad.. Is very quiet in my home right now though.  Ric

  • I get no 5.1 surround sound from apple tv2 for any media

I have apple tv2 and think its great. However I have it connected to my ken wood surround sound system and only get sound from 2 speakers for all media including movies, netflix, my iTunes library and airplay from my iPhone or ipad.
There is no problem with connections and the same fibre optic cable supports 5.1 in the same port of my ken wood when it it connected to my DVD player.
My Dolby in settings is set to on.
    Any suggestions

You really need to specify exactly what imac you have.  Current ones I believe have an optical (out) and in and I think that can be combined with usb to produce multi-channel sound.  But it's just an academic exercise if you don't have the optical.
Also, google "5.1 audio on imac" for lots of hits on this topic.

  • Apple TV2 slow to play

I hate to add to this chorus of compaints regarding the Apple TV2, but I too just purchased an Apple TV2 for Christmas.  All my movies are already loaded on my Mac Pro and exist in iTunes.  It is not a problem with downloading or streaming from Apple.  They play fine on the MacPro.  The regular definition movies play almost instantly on my Apple TV2.
The Problem is that I cannot get it to play an HD movie.  I purchased my first HD movie from the iTunes store last night.  It downloaded from the iTunes store to my Mac Pro  in approximately 20 minutes along with what appears as a regular definition version of the movie and "extras".  I have been watching over 20 minutes of spinning beachballs waiting for it to begin playing on the Apple TV2.  The Airport Utility says that Apple TV2 connection to my Airport Extreme is "Excellent" with a data rate of 65 MB/s, an RSSI (whatever that is) of -49, and a Mode of 802.11 b/g/n
Can anyone help?  Otherwise this device is useless for me to watch HD video.  My Mac Pro is running the latest version of Snow Leapord (10.6.8) and all other software is up to date with the latest version.
Is there a reset that I need to push?  Anything?

Just got off the phone with Apple Support.  There procedure was the following:
    1.  Go to the Apple TV, select settings, general and scroll down to reset.
    2.  Select reset and then select reset all
Apple TV will go through a restart after the reset and you will have to select your network then log in with your network or Airport Express password.  You will then have to turn on home sharing and It will then ask you for your Apple ID for the iTunes store and then the password.  At this point you may not see your library, because the Apple TV wants you to turn on home sharing on your home computer that is hosting the movie library.  Turn off home sharing on that computer, restart iTunes and turn on home sharing again.  After this is done you should be able to see you library listed under the computer.
After going through these steps, when I select an HD movie from my iTunes library the movie comes up after about a 5 second delay.
Hope this helps!  I am back up for business.

i did follow "From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences. Choose View > Time Machine. Set Time Machine to On if it is off "
. .....but i couldn't find the time capsule from airport utility..... why?

Are you using a new 802.11ac Time Capsule - the "tall" one - and are you still using Mac OS X 10.6.8?
You need OS X 10.7.5 "Lion" or later, or an iOS device, to configure an 802.11ac Time Capsule:

  • Volume control for video playback through Apple TV2

I am trying to configure the volume settings used on airplay through apple TV2 and a macbook pro and Iphone4 all with most recent updates.
I am using the apple remote app on my iphone to control the apple tv.
    Whats working:
Using the pandora app on my iphone through aiplay to the apple tv, I can control the volume using the plus and minus buttons on the side of the iphone for volume control. Very cool and easy.
Using the apple remote app on my iphone I can control the itunes volume of different speakers by clicking on the airplay icon and using a slider.  Not as cool as using the hard +/- buttons but still works.
    Whats not working:
Controling volume on appleTV2 through the iphone remote app for video playbacks like netflix, and youtube.
Why I want this: RIght now I can control most of the multimedia right from my iphone including cranking the music up:) But when I switch over to video(Netlfix, Youtube) I have to get out another remote (stereo reciever) to control the volume. It seems we are so close to being able to control everything off the iphone, the only thing missing is volume control for video playback.
Is there a setting that can be changed or a solution I havent found?
    Thanks

Same problem with TV3. HDMI volume output is not adjustable, neither with the original Apple remote nor with any universal. Why ? Every simple settop-box is able to be volume adjusted. And a Mac Mini too ?!!!
I use a flatscreen TV. it has 3 HDMI inputs and one optical out for the audio going to an amp standing behind it. The sound of the TV is switched to go to the optical out.
HDMI 1 is connected to the satellite settop box with its  own remote control ( channel +/-, volume +/- etc. ) it work s fine.
HDMI 2 is connected to the MacMini HDMI out with its own remote control ( channel/music +/-, volume +/- ) it works fine too.
HDMI 3 was connected to Apple TV3 with its own remote control ( channel/music +/- but no volume ). I sent the TV3 back to Apple.
What's going wrong in the mind of Apple ? Why is the HDMI volume output of the MacMini adjustable with the Apple remote, and the TV3 not ?
I want not to discuss, wether a 4th remote control is useful or not. I don't want it. I want to adjust the volume with the originl remote control of the specific unit I use, because I need it anyway. It worked since years, but not with Apple TV3.
How can we help Apple to open the volume +/- function on their own remote control ?

  • Windows Vista iTunes Home Share Not showing up on Apple tv2 through LAN

I have 2 new Apple TV's and I'm having the same problem on both, so I think it is an issue with my network or the Vista Laptop. I'm hoping for helpful suggestions here.
    My setup:
2 Apple TV2's connected with wifi
    D-Link DIR655 Router
MacbookPro, iPad, And iPhones all connected with wifi.
iTunes Home Sharing and Airplay all work fine with all of the above.
    The Problem:
I have an old Vista Laptop I want to use as an iTunes Server to store movies on and such, for use on the Apple TV's.
If I connect the laptop to the network with wifi the Apple tv's find the Vista iTunes Homeshare just fine. But when I connect the laptop via Lan Wire to the router the Apple tv's don't seem to find the laptop. This is a problem because i want to just connect it wired and tuck the laptop away in a closet, so it is not a waste of wifi spectrum, but no joy so far. I have checked firewalls and things like that but no luck. Any ideas out there?

I was also having this problem but in my case it was not caused by the D Link router. My problem was caused by mcafee firewall. To get itunes sharing to work I needed to add an itunes firewall/port rule to enable TCP=3689 UDP=5353 and enable this for ALL PCs. Setting this for PCs in Home/Work networks did not work.

  • How do I get Apple TV2's "Computers" to display my computer ??

How do I get my computer to display on the Apple TV2 menu in the Computers category ??  I have homesharing turned on in iTunes and Apple TV2 using the same login name and password.  Is it a firewall problem ?  The other areas of Apple TV2 are working.  Strange, any thoughts ??

Unfortunately I don't know much about PCs.
The ports needed by the Apple TV are 53, 80, 123, 443 and 3689 (TCP) and 5353 (UDP)
