Apple USB Ethernet Adapter after reboot

Hello everyone,
We have a group of 3 or 4 MBAs that are showing this same issue. Whenever we reboot we need to unplug and then replug in the ethernet adapter in order for it to connect to the network. This same problem is seen regardless of the adapter being plugged directly into the computer or through a USB hub.
It also happens when we "undock" and then dock back in from the USB hub.
Has anyone else see this issue? Have you found a solution?

Yes, Yes and NO!
What's worse is sometimes you get full 100Meg/Full Duplex and even Bonjour services, then for no reason it connects at 10base half duplex and NO BONJOUR.
I'm convinced it's the USB-Ethernet adaptor, as I get the same problem using it with a MacBook Pro, at first it works great, then you restart and it looses Bonjour and sometimes you can see all the Bonjour enabled devices drop off the Shared list in the Finder.
I've had this problem ever since I started using the MB AIr (Late 2010) model.
I don't think Apple are bothered about fixing the problem, as they seem to assume all MB Air users are on Wireless (which also has it's problems)
It remains to be seen if Lion fixes it or they just give up and go to ThunderBolt on the next generation MB Airs with a suitable Gigabit adaptor.

  • Does the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter work with a MacBook Air that's been updated to Lion?

I saw a comment at the online Apple store that the USB Ethernet Adapter didn't work with Lion. Anyone else have experience with the adapter?

Just point the tech rep to the apple website that lists the Ethernet to USB system requirements as:

The Apple USB Ethernet Adapter is a simple, one-piece external adapter that plugs into the USB 2.0 port of your MacBook Air to provide 10/100BASE-T performance. Simply plug your Ethernet cable into the RJ-45 connector — no external power is required. It’s small, light, easy to install, and even easier to use.

  • MacAir - Apple USB Ethernet Adapter Drive

    Hi,
im using macair, and trying to install bootcamp for windows Vista / XP. however, im having difficulties to download driver for Apple USB Ethernet Adapter. if anyone know where to download this driver, please advise me..

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
There doesn't seem to be a clear-cut answer to this. If you read the reviews on the Apple site, some people have been able to make the ethernet adaptor work on some PowerPC Macs, and others can't even get it to work on a different Intel Mac. I know this isn't much help, but a perusal of these reviews might be the best resource unless someone else has actually done this with the same iBook that you have.
I assume you have tried a different ethernet cable?
    Good luck!

  • Apple USB Ethernet Adapter and VLAN??

Bought the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter today because my built in ethernetport on my MBP stopped working. What I know I need to replace the motherboard to have it fixed, so I thought the USB adapter could be useful until then.
But, it didn't work! I only got a "Self assigned ip-address". No matter what I do. I also entered an ip-address manually with no success.
Later at home I tested again, and Voila!! It worked perfectly!
Back at the office, same problem... I only get a "Self assigned ip-address"...
My conclusion of this is that the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter doesn't support VLAN?? Could anyone confirm that or better of, suggest a solution??
    Would appreciate it a lot!
PS. Yes we do have Wi-Fi, but it's restricted and is not a solution for me. DS.

Create a new network location and try again.

  • Apple USB Ethernet Adapter

    Hi,
Is this a mac mini compatible USB adapter? or "just" MacBook Air? : http://www.abt.com/product/33454/Apple-MB442ZA.html
I would appreciate an answer. Thanks!

    Hi,
haven't tried myself, but according to this review:
    *Works with Mac Mini*
I purchased this device for my new Intel Mac Mini. I am using Leopard 10.5.2 and this adapter works perfect.
When I plugged the…Read more adapter into a USB port of my Mac Mini with the ethernet side plugged into my Time Capsule the network connection was made without any effort on my part.
I was able to change this from a DHCP to a manual configuration without any issues.
I rate this device 5 stars."
    (taken from here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB442Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDA3Ng&mco=MjE0ODQ2OA )
it does work with a Mac Mini.
    Hope it helps

  • Will Apple's USB-Ethernet Adapter Work on iMac

One of the pins in the ethernet port of my iMac were bent. The second I attempted to bring the pin up, it broke. So I haven't been able to use ethernet for over a year.
Will the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter work on my Late 2006 2Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac? It is loaded with Leopard 10.5.5. I've read these adapters would only work for MBAir but will it work on my iMac?
I'm not looking to get back Gigabyte Ethernet capability, I generally want to use ethernet again.

I do have a Base Station the current base station.
All my stuff except my iMac & iBook is packed deep in a storage facility since I'm on a move to someplace else. Meanwhile I'm staying in a place that doesn't have Wi-FI but offers wired ethernet connection.
I have my iBook but I want to use my iMac again & that adapter is all I need to get it connected. I just want to know if it would work since it's intent is for the MacBook Air.

  • USB Ethernet Adapter Stopped Working On Mac Mini Server Running 10.6.6

Is anybody out there successfully using the Apple USB Ethernet adapter on a Mac Mini Server running 10.6.6? They have stopped working for me.
The boot disk in the 2009 Mac Mini Server in my classroom failed and after Apple replaced the disk and I reinstalled SLS and ran Software Update to bring the machine up to 10.6.6 the USB Ethernet adapter that was the interface to the outside world no longer recognized when a cable was plugged in. The cable was good and worked just fine if plugged into another machine or the built-in interface. At first I thought that the USB Interface had failed but after trying two new ones (graciously exchanged by Apple) and finding that none of them worked I'm coming to the conclusion that perhaps the warning on the package that the USB Ethernet only works with the MacBook Air finally became true.

Only the specific build of Mac OS X that comes with a MacBook Air includes the kernel extension to run the Apple USB Ethernet adapter, however there are no hardware issues preventing it being used on other Mac models if you have a suitable driver.
Generic USB drivers can be downloaded for free from http://www.sustworks.com/site/newsusbethernet.html and this worked for me.

  • Can you determine link status with USB Ethernet adapter?

I'm wanting to replace an old G4 PowerBook with a 11" MacBookAir. I install networks, and I often need to determine link status of an Ethernet connection. With the built-in Ethernet port on most Macs, you can check the Network Status to see if there is link on an Ethernet connection (either the green or yellow status signs).
If I am using the Apple USB Ethernet adapter, do I get similar feedback from the Network preference panel? If not, perhaps a terminal command that would do the same?

Yes - the Network Panel under System Preferences works the same as with a regular Mac, showing USB Ethernet status (connected, disconnected, etc) and with the updated connected IP address, etc.

  • Usb ethernet adapter, create network

I'm trying to use the usb ethernet adapter to create a network notebook wi-fi.  I've had major headaches getting usb ethernet adapter to work, but when it is working and I try to create a network, problems reoccur with the adapter.  Can I expect to create a network while using the apple usb ethernet adapter?

Did it do this on 10.7.3? We have this: plugging in a USB card reader drops the USB ethernet. It does it on 10.7.4, 10.7.5, 10.8.2 and 10.8.3 but not 10.7.3 ?!?

  • Can't get my mail when use the USB Ethernet adapter

I can't get my mail when use the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter. If I use a wireless connection, there is no problem. The LAN which I'm trying to connect is behind a proxy server but the Internet is working 100%.

    Hi ViK,
This sounds like a question for the network administrator of the location. Without knowing how the proxy is set it's impossible to know what it's blocking (incoming/outgoing). It sounds like it might be filtering the incoming mail server.

  • After i updated to mavericks, my usb ethernet adapter stopped working.

I'm not sure why, but when I updated my software to mavericks, my USB ethernet adapter stopped working.

    I'm using that adapter:
    http://www.edimax.com/en/support_detail.php?pd_id=445&pl1_id=5&pl2_id=26
After I updated to Mavericks, I installed the driver in this page, but it didn't work. Then I googled "AX88772" which is my adapter's part no. or something like that, and I installed that one:
    http://www.asix.com.tw/download.php?sub=driverdetail&PItemID=97
I wasn't expecting that work but that did work. So, I think the solution of the problem is finding the right driver. I hope you solve your problem too.

I get the following error message when I connect a usb ethernet adapter to my new MacBook Pro: Unsupported - You cannot use an Apple USB Modem with this computer. I live where we only have dial-up and the Apple Store said this is what I need. In addition, when I connect the phone to the connecter it falls out, it will not click in.

Why are you using a usb ethernet adaptor? Just plug the modem into the usb port.

  • Can I use any USB-Ethernet adapter, or do I need to buy the Apple part?

I'm about to get an Air and do the migration from my old PowerBook.  Can I use the Netgear USB-Ethernet adapter for the Air, or do I need to buy a new Apple part?

Little update for the usb to ethernet adapter is in order. Both adapters are producing Gigabit ethernet max. Keep in mind that new macbook air has the usb 3 version ports at 5 Gigabit internal speed where Thunderbolt has 10 Gigabit per chanel internal capacity. In ether case more than suficient to provide Gigabit ethernet output. Nither one will push more than that out to the ethernet. In my case the decission was made by availability. I wanted the thunderbolt adapter for the sake of keeping up with the technology but there was none on the shelf.
    Just my two cents

  • Setting up USB Ethernet Adapter

My sister has a macbook (1st generation?) and her Ethernet port has recently stopped working. We know it's not the cord or the outlet (dorm room) and the macbook doesn't even recognize that an ethernet cable is plugged in (in diagnostics). So we've decided to go with a USB Ethernet adapter. We bought one and it hasn't worked. It's the only thing we could find in the area and careful reading of the label reveals that it's for "Macbook Air only."
Is there any way we can get this to work for my sister's macbook? I have hope because of the first review on this page:
    http://store.apple.com/us/reviews/MB442Z/A?mco=MTA4ODUzODQ .
He says that he got it to work on his 5-year-old mac mini by turning off the built-in ethernet and connecting with DHCP. How can I do this on my sister's macbook? How do I connect through DHCP?

Daboa, I can see you're using OS 10.4 (some of these options are in different places on Leopard). Try this: Open System Preferences (either on the dock, or find it by clicking the apple in the top left corner of the screen) and go to the "Network" panel. If the USB-Ethernet adapter is plugged in, it should show up in the drop-down menu called "Show." First, pick the item called "Built-In Ethernet," and in its TCP/IP tab, set IPv4 to "off." Then, in the "Show" drop-down, pick the external Ethernet adapter (I don't know what it would be called exactly), and in its TCP/IP tab, set IPv4 to "DHCP." Then make sure the USB adapter is connected to the Ethernet cable, pick "Network Status" in the "Show" field, and hope for the light to turn green.
DHCP just means that the network adapter will do its best to figure out how to connect to the network. If the dorm wants you to use some specific settings, then they'll provide those, and you'll need to stick them into the other blanks in the TCP/IP field.
    Hope this helps.
