Apple USB Modem 2.02/OSX 10.4.10 issue

Hi there:
3 weeks ago I bought a new imac and also an apple usb modem (since we only have dial up where I live).
I wasn't having a problem at all with connecting to the internet.
I am online virtually most of the day and, at night, I disconnect and put my computer to sleep.
Now every morning when I go to connect, it just says "connecting" endlessly, with no dial tone....YES, the phone line is working.
It does nothing to disconnect the phone line, the modem etc.
If you click "disconnect" it just says "disconnecting" endlessly.
I am forced to shut down the computer and reboot to make it stop and reset itself and then I can connect to the internet just fine.
The only thing I can think of that changed since when I first got the computer is that I upgraded to OSX 10.4.10.
Does anyone know if this is a 10.4.10 issue or a modem issue?
Help!
Thanks!

You should post this issue in the Internet, Networking and your Intel-based iMac Discussions forum. Here's the URL: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1111.

I don't know how much of a Mac background you have, so forgive me if I state the obvious. Before and after any upgrade you should be repairing permissions (in Disk Utilities). There are some AOL issues with this modem if you use that ISP. I am having a problem with my usb modem not dialing for sending a fax @ work until I uncheck "wait for dialtone" but I am dialing through a work phone system. I have not figured out how to make this the default setting. Since you have a new iMac, you should call Apple Support by your misbehaving phone line.
    Good Luck

  • Apple USB modem no longer works with Mountain Lion

Now that I've upgraded my iMac to Mountain Lion my Apple USB modem no longer works.  Does anyone know of a software fix or have I just lost my faxing ability with this item and have to buy something else?

That's a very sad situation as the Official statement link above (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3152) states that the modem cannot be used with any Windows. So Apple thinks that people investing in the ability to Fax and relying in Apple's good product only deserves to throw out their modems (because now it is useless on any platform)...

  • Can't get Apple USB modem to work in Boot Camp

I've been struggling to get an Internet connection under boot camp/Windows XP for several days. Have an Apple USB modem and installed all the Apple drivers. Apple tech support says they can't help me with Windows (cop out). Both Microsoft and my ISP tech support team have both been great and have spent hours trying to help me. Their final conclusion is that the modem is working fine, but the underlying flaw is the inability of an Apple system to run Windows. In desperation, I've ordered a US Robotics USB modem from the Mac/PC Connection that is both OS X and Windows XP compatible. It is on backorder for 2 weeks
Any help you can give me in the meantime would be greatly appreciated! Glad I kept my old Dell!

"I am confused, QuickDraw. If the poster cannot get online via Windows XP, how does he or she get the drivers?"
I was speaking of the Boot Camp drivers that comes on the Leopard Disc. This could possibly be the answer to your troubles as well if you haven't already installed them yourself. After you've successfully installed Windows via Boot Camp, you need to boot up into Windows, then stick in your Leopard Disc and the drivers are supposed to install automatically. If after you've installed the BC drivers you still cannot get online via your router, then post back.
    Hope this helps.
By the way, you really need to start your own thread. That way you'll have a better chance of being assisted from others. Just a suggestion.

  • Does The Apple USB Modem Work With The Mac mini ??????

Just wanted to know if anyone has successfully used the new Apple USB Modem with the Mac mini, is it compatable ????
Thank you for your input on this.
    Mike D.

It says it works with the Mac mini, but does it really? I just received my modem yesterday and could not get it to work with my 1.42 mini - the more expensive one that comes without a dialup modem! I looked carefully at the specs and it appears the Apple USB modem requires Mac OS 10.4.3, not the 10.4.2 that comes with the Mac mini.
Talk about stupid! And the mini docs say it comes with the "latest" version of Tiger. Not! So I can download the upgrade, I guess. IF I could get on the internet! This is extremely annoying. I guess I'll have to download the upgrade on another computer and transfer it somehow. Boy, those Apple guys sure are tech geniuses, aren't they???

I get the following error message when I connect a usb ethernet adapter to my new MacBook Pro: Unsupported - You cannot use an Apple USB Modem with this computer. I live where we only have dial-up and the Apple Store said this is what I need. In addition, when I connect the phone to the connecter it falls out, it will not click in.

Why are you using a usb ethernet adaptor? Just plug the modem into the usb port.

  • Please help: Problem sending fax to one recipient using Apple USB Modem

    Hello,
I'm using an Apple USB Modem to send an receive faxes on my PowerMac G5. This is working great to the most recipients, but not one with a Philips fax machine.
The problem is, that everybody can send faxes to him - except of me
I'm using a software called Pagesender for this, I e-mailed the support and he told me, that the my fax is timing out and some of his customers have made positive reports of Zoom and Best Data Modems in cases where the Apple Modems have encountered line noise.
Also the Tiger fax solution doesn't work ... The odd things are, that I could send faxes using a stationary fax machine and don't have problems to send faxes to others ...
Is there really no solution for this.
    Best regards

  • New Mini won't recognize Apple USB modem

I hate being thick but I can't figure out why my new mini won't recognize the Apple USB modem I just purchased. The network preferences see the built-in Airport card, Bluetooth, Ethernet and Firewire, but I cannot get it to recognize any kind of modem (internal or external).
I figured it might be an uninstalled component (this is the Mini with built-in Airport) and looked through the OS X installation discs, but no. I can't find any drivers on the Apple site for the modem... has anyone had any success with this?
    Many thanks in advance,
    m.

Doh! Upgrading the system to 10.4.4 did the trick. I guess the right drivers for the USB modem weren't in the earlier version to be recognized.

  • Apple USB modem,  OS 10.6.4  Macbook Pro 4,1

Since I've updated to 10.6.4 I've lost capabilities with a couple of USB items I use frequently. The Apple USB modem and the Keyspan USB to Serial adapter. Why on earth does Apple continue to abuse their user base like this ? I cannot believe that it is so difficult to support these USB devices, especially their own USB modem, even if they have discontinued selling it. This really ***. Now I have to boot off of a 10.6.3 disk to use these devices. I'm a long, long time Apple user, but this kind of stuff is really ******* me off.

Well, my bad, and I apologize to Apple. Digging around the forums a bit, I discovered the Issue with both USB devices. I had my OS set in 64 bit mode. DOH!!

  • Apple USB Modem 56K

    Hello Friends
Now 2 days ago the update of Snow Leopard 10.6.3 released, but once again WITHOUT a 64-bit drivers for the original Apple USB 56K Modem. Can anyone say whether there's what is planned? I have often professionally faxes by modem to send and receive.
With the 32-bit mode of the 10.6.3 is the USB modem without any problems. But since I mainly use the 64 bit mode, which is effective, it would be nice here can also send faxes using the USB modem.
Someone has a tip, whether it alternetaiven a driver (kext) for the USB modem for 64-bit there?
    Thanks Info for this.

Hi there, I jut bought an Apple USB modem on eBay bnib. It works intermittently with my Snow Leopard Server, Mac Mini. I just get the first inch of the received fax. This is painful as it is such a simple and normal solution for a small business sever.
I spoke to AppleCare who were unaware on any issues. I sent the modem back for a replacement and have the same problem.
What do I do? Buy a Zoom Model 3095 V.92 USB Mini External Modem, trail a wire across my studio to an HP Fax Printer.
Come on Apple, please fix this.

  • Apple USB modem disconnects after a few hours??

I bought an imac G5 -- it came without a modem. (After a false start), we bought the Apple USB modem. Now we want to upgrade the operating system, either with Safari or with "Software Update". It tells us we need Mac OS X Update to 10.4.3, and it is 97.0 MB.
We have a fairly slow dial-up connection -- always have, so we usually download large files like these overnight. But our Apple USB Modem won't let us - perhaps it is too unstable. After 6 or 7 hours we get disconnected. (It says we need 8 or 9 hours to download the file). Our main problem is that we can't stay connected for more than 7 hours.
I've made sure under the Network Preferences, for external modem, the Prompt every xx minutes to maintain connection, and Disconnect if idle for xx minutes, are both unchecked. I've turned off the screensaver. I make sure I move the mouse and a window every hour or so. I've phoned my ISP, and they deny a time-limit. I've tried not breating heavy near the computer.
What else can I do? I've always been able to stay on line over-night for download with my old computer/modem, but not with this one. I've tied at least 4 times. Is there something wrong with the Apple USB Modem?
Also, when I tried with Safari, and the modem disconnects, I thought I could just re-log on and start downloading where I left off -- but no. Every time I click the "resume downloading" circle next to the update in the download window, it starts from the beginning. -- it doesn't resume where it left off!
That is the most frustrating part about this -- I've downloaded the first half of the file a half-dozen times, and no matter if I use Safari or Software Update, I can't get the computer to remember the hours of work it just did and simply continue downloading from where it left off. If I could just solve that issue, I could get the system update downloaded.
If we don't solve this, we will never be able update any apple software with large files. Thanks for your help.
    Francis

it's a 3.5 hour round trip to the closest Mac store.
I just want my modem to work right -- the first time. Actually, this is the third modem I've bought (all on-line since I have no mac store close). The first USB modem didn't have a mac driver. The next bluetooth modem said it was mac compatable, but when it arrived, it was only capatable with os9. So I get a modem right from Apple, and darn, I just want it all to work now. I'm tired of foolin around. Why wasn't there an internal modem anyway?
My old modems and macs could download overnight. All I want is for it to be as good as the old stuff.

  • External Apple USB Modem won't answer calls

I've just got a new MacPro and I bought the external Apple USB Modem 'cause I use my machine to send and receive faxes. But I just found that the modem doesn't answer phone calls... I can send faxes OK with it, and I'm even able to receive them if I force "manual receive". But it just doen't answer phone calls on its own. All settings are OK and double checked. Always had internal modems with my previous Macs and never had a single fault. I've noticed that Apple posted some software updates that solved problems that arose with phone calls in Ireland. Is it possible that we have such a problem here in Portugal (Apple modem not being properly configured to use our phone lines?)
    Any help welcome.
    Thanks

I'm having the same problem, with my new Mac Pro, it will send a fax, but will not answer a fax call, Powerbook G4 with internal USB modem will answer fax call on the same line, as well as G4 Silver, however when I connect the Apple usb Modem to the line it fails to answer. I'm sur that it is the Apple external USB Modem, Apple has just given me the run around.

  • Apple usb modem, will it work in windows?

I'm running vista ultimate 64 via boot camp. Will the Apple usb modem work in the windows environment? Can I use any usb modem in in the windows environment?
It's only purpose is for faxing.

They said yes to which part, the Apple USB modem, or any USB Modem?

  • Apple USB modem won't answer

I'm using an Apple USB modem with my Intel Mac Pro (Tiger). It used to work fine, but now it won't receive faxes! When I call the number, the menu bar on top of the screen says "Ringing..." and even though I have the thing set to answer in 2 rings, it never does - just keeps saying ringing and never picks up. Is there a way to fix this or a better way to add a fax modem to my Mac?
    Mike

I'm not certain, but I thought I read that some all in ones can dowload the Fax to the Mac!?
Tough to tell if it's the Modem or some OS problem, you could try a new User for one as a test. Might try the Modem on another Mac, or at an Apple Store, it seems that if it's ringing I can't picture why it would be faulty, but maybe.
Geez, I have so many old Serial Modems haven't looked, but I think this one would work with a USB->Serial converter...

Geez, just switched to a new Boot drive and my Serial converters aren't showing up to test... grrr, but I have in the past used them to Modems, not certain I faxed to from them though.
Found this interesting FAX Application while researching...

  • Faxes won't send through Apple USB modem

I'm trying to use PageSender to send faxes via my Apple USB external modem. Every time I try to send a fax, I get an error message that says my modem is in use. The tech people say that my external modem is supposed to show up in the Printer Setup Utility and in the Print and Fax preferences, but it doesn't appear either place. They're puzzled. Before I installed PageSender, I was trying to send a fax using the OS X built-in fax capability, but I kept getting a message about a software error and the faxes would be put on a 5-minute hold for sending later, when the same thing would occur again. Anybody got an idea about what's happening? Are there updated drivers or anything else to update?

I too am trying to use pagesender. I can fax from the server, but not from client imacs. Using apple usb modem as well. The faxes won't go over to pagesender- just hangs in the printer que on the client computer. All computers can see one another on the wired network and a DIR-130 router. We share a network printer with no problems.
Pagesender support has been helpful, but they don't offer live support. If anyone knows an apple consultant who can walk me through the process on the phone I would be interested.
    Thanks
