Apple Video Compressor for iBA?

Is Compressor - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/compressor/id424390742 useful for videos in iBooks Author? Or is iBA doing the same job for free?

The Video is most likely "Multiplex". Its explained here on how to find out.

If it is, you need another program to convert the file to a "ipod friendly" format like Videora (Free) or quicktime pro (Buy)

  • Apple Video Adapter Blew my Inverter and HELP?

I had purchased a few television shows from itunes and wished to watch them on my television. I went to the Apple store today and purchased an Apple Video adapter for Mini-VGA to Video Out M9109G/A. I asked if it was the correct adapter and everyone I asked stated it was. I came home, unplugged my PS2 from my video in on my television, plugged the adapter into my iMac. The video resolution adjusted to something like 800 stretched I took the SAME rca cable used for my PS2 and plugged it into the adapter. A popping noise occured and my screen went black.
Zapped Pram, Started from Install CD 1, Took back off, plugged in adapter, pressed start button and noted that LED 3 was lit. Following the troubleshooting instructions I ordered the replacement inverter.
    Now my problems/questions are this
    1) Why did this happen? I've plugged all kinds of things into that port on the television without question. Should I never use the monitor out w/ the Apple Adapter?
    2) I don't have a backup of my data from friday, saturday, or sunday. I attempted to boot the (screen dead) imac via target mode through my pismo in order to clone the drive out, but it wouldn't appear. Is this normal w/ a 'defective inverter'. Is there any way to get my data? I have another identical model, and I know I CAN exchange the drives (leaving the sensor and the case plugged in so as to avoid any cable problems), but is this a bad idea?
Thanks for any advice on this.
BTW, all components line conditioned w/ UPS.
Well..Apple Palo Alto fixed my machine in one day. I'm very impressed. Unfortunately, I couldn't de-authorize my machine (ITMS) prior to the midplane replacement so now iTunes isn't working since it thinks it is authorized or something. I'm trying here, but any suggestions would be good.
In summary. A) Good people at Apple told me to switch drives to my other imac to backup and this worked fine. B) Repair was completely quickly and machine works.
    C) If you have this situation with authorization: 1) Open terminal, type cd /users/shared then type mv "SC Info" "old_SC Info". 2) Create a new user (I did w/ admin). 3) login to the new user account, launch itunes and try to deauthorize (you should get a message you aren't authorized) so buy a free song and authorize. Login to your original user and try itunes (shoudl work) delete the newer user and you can remove "old_SC Info" or keep it if you so choose.
Hope my rambling is helpful to someone.

On Mac Pro I use my second video out to connect a standard crt vga monitor. When I have it plugged in when I boot, the computer hangs with the blue screen everyone else has, never showing the mac os x loading screen. If I have it unplugged when I boot, everything starts fine but when I plug the vga monitor back in, it does not find the monitor after clicking detect displays. This was all working fine before 10.5, so it has to be an issue with the os communicating with my video card.
I assume this all stems from the same issues you are having. There is a glitch in either the video driver or the new core for video that they have not fixed yet.
I may eventually call on this, but right now, I dont have 2 hours to waste speaking to someone in the Philippines that is reading a script.

  • Calibrating Apple Cinema Display for Video Editing

What's the procedure to calibrate an Apple Cinema Display for editing in FCP (editing and preliminary color grading)?
My camcorder can produce color bars, but I can't hook it up directly to the monitor. Shall I record color bars and use the recorded clip to calibrate? What's the procedure regarding calibration?
    Thanks!

The need to "calibrate" a display for video "editing" is a complete fallacy. There is no need to have accurate images when plopping pictures and graphics next to each other to create a story in a linear fashion. For accuracy you need a dedicated input/output device with a display that represents your intended delivery; projection, broadcast, whatever. If your intended delivery is web or phone only, well, it's a total rodeo where the word "consistency" has no meaning at all.
The MXO, it puts a look up table on a computer monitor and then does some other electronic mumbo jumbo to simulate interlacing and other tv junk. I call it lipstick on a pig, others here will give it high marks.
The only real constant is that if you want to play in the world of "hd", the costs are bigger than in "sd" and is the return on investment worth it?

  • My Late 09 Macbook has a loose video cable. Will Apple fix it for free?

The screen randomly freezes up unless I push the screen slightly forwards or backwards. I'm assuming that this is due to a loose video cable. Will Apple fix it for free? I've tried disassembling it but I can't seem to locate the right screwdriver for some of the screws.

And even if it was in warranty, disassmbling it may have voided it.

  • Inline video playback for Apple devices in responsive projects (Captivate 8)

    Hello,
I know that Captivate itself does not support inline browser playback for videos on Apple devices, but I was wondering if there might be a way to edit the HTML of a responsive project to add inline playback tags (like the ones listed here).  Or maybe some other solution that accomplishes the same goal?
The context is that I will be developing 45 minute course (heavily animated) that my organization wants to be mobile-optimized.  I'm developing all animations in Flash and converting to mp4, and then inserting those into my Captivate project.  There will be about 100 slides worth of videos, which would be unbelievably tedious for the user if they had to keep toggling back and forth between their browser and the native Apple video player.  For the record, I've already experimented with converting these into HTML5 content and inserting them into Captivate as web objects, but that's no good since the <iframe> tag forces those objects to the top, regardless of my stack order in the timeline.
    So any creative solutions?
    Thanks in advance!
    Dan

That's unfortunately not really correct.  I don't care about user navigation from slide to slide--I actually like the fact that the user has to use the next and back buttons and I would actually prefer that the next video didn't auto-play when the previous one finished.
Let me back up for a second.  When you go to YouTube on your iPhone, you can't just push play on a video and watch it in the browser.  The video loads into an iOS shell and you often have to exit out of that shell in order to get back toYouTube.  In my course, I don't want the videos to play in that shell (i.e. a new window, which is what's happening now).  I want it to play directly in the browser.  This is indeed possible outside of Captivate (per the link I included in my initial question).  I want to know how to add that functionality to a responsive project in Captivate.
    Does that make more sense?

  • What is the best video converter for high quality MPEG-4 for Apple TV?

What is the best video converter for high quality MPEG-4 for Apple TV?

Handbrake won't convert AVI files, But there are many more than those mentioned that will
The choice of conversion software is a personal choice, I have around a dozen applications that will tackle AVI's, however VisualHub is not one of them, not because there is anything wrong with it but rather I have enough such applications in my arsenal already.
I would use mpegstreamclip in most scenarios for what you are wanting to do but maybe not always. It is a good idea to have a few applications to choose from as not all do the same thing. mpegstreamclip has a few more options than some bog standard applications without becoming overburdening with choices.
You might want to try a few applications yourself before deciding on the software for you. isquint is a free limited version of visualhub, you might want to give that a whirl to get a feeling for visualhub.
Be aware though that quality conversions do not happen quickly, claims of being faster than other applications may well be correct, but are usually a trade off against quality. Again you need to choose your software to reflect your preferred balance between speed and quality.
Here's how I use mpegstreamclip, http://web.me.com/gartside1104/z008/Mpegstreamclip.html but your AVI's may well be low quality, you shouldn't set the bitrate any higher than your source file and likely lower, you shouldn't increase the frame size either.

  • Hi, how to transform a video file from Mark 5D iii into MVI_2500-Apple ProRes 422 for Progressive material.mov

Hi, how to transform a video file from Mark 5D iii into MVI_2500-Apple ProRes 422 for Progressive material.mov ?
Is it the best way to work with videos in Final Cut Pro?
    Thank you!
    Anastasia

Is your 5D media progressive from the camera? Simply use the optimize option when you import into FCP.

  • Several video assets for DVD Studio Pro 4, Compressor question??

I have several video assets for my DVD, they include motion menus, video tracks etc. When I go into Compressor and process each video asset, do I choose a preset according to that clips individual video length, or do I choose a preset based upon total running time of the DVD?
As always thanks in advance for your time in reading and replying to my Post,
    Sebastian

If you go into your Presets Window, and select the pulldown arrow, you will see in detail what preset you need to use.
    For example: DVD Best Quality 90 Minutes 4:3 is MPEG2, 6.2mbps, 2 Pass, 4:3
Then to the right it will say "Fits up to 90 minutes of video with AIFF for audio.
Don't even use the presets unless you have like a ton of footage.
But you can get about 80 or more minutes of footage encoded based off of these settings.
Just make a New Preset and type in the following..
New-MPEG2, then double click the Untitled MPEG-2
Video Format Tab - Choose your video settings, rest at default.
Quality Tab - 2 Pass VBR, 7.0 average, 7.4 max, Best
    Rest at default.
If you have 80 or so minutes maximum, these are fine.
    You should be good.
If you have more, then just drop the bitrate accordingly.
Once you get to 6.5, Compressor starts showing its ugly face.

  • Apple developer notes on video format for iPod, Apple TV and iPhone

I have been doing a bit of searching on information for converting video for the Apple TV and came across this web-page which contains technical information of converting video for the iPod, Apple TV and iPhone.
If you are after information on bitrates, b-frames, levels, profiles, low-complexity, etc. then this may help:
    http://developer.apple.com/technotes/tn2007/tn2188.html
What is interesting to note, whilst 5Mbps is the maximum bitrate, the Apple TV supports spikes up to 12Mbps.
Happy reading and please feel free to add more links to useful information on the video format for the Apple TV.

I have downloaded the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - Trailer #2 .mov file and this streams quite happily on the Apple TV. This has a total bitrate of 6505Kbps and an audio bitrate of 192Kbps @ 48KHz and video 23.98fps @ 1280x544.
So, according to the Apple TV spec., the audio is well above 160Kbps and the video bitrate is well above 5Mbps. So why does it play at all on the Apple TV let alone stream without stuttering? Maybe its because the video height is 544 rather than the full 720, but why does the Apple TV get to see it?
I don't know the answers, just offering this as an example of a video that is freely available for anyone to try out which clearly exceeds some of the maximum specs for the Apple TV.
Has anyone found or got anything that beats this?

  • I just bought the new 2014 Mac Mini 2.6 8Gig for $699 at the Apple Store Online. I want to use it for light editing in iMovie making video's for YouTube, I couldn't afford the higher priced models. Is this going to work for me? I hope so..

Will this do basic video editing for YouTube Video's in iMovie, I hope so.  It's all I could afford.
Just under $800 with tax and Applecare.
    It's stock 2.6 8gigs 1 terabyte hard drive.
I have two monitors DVI that I plan to hook to it.
I know it's weak but will it get me going without too much hardship.
I want to grow into the more high priced computers and Final Cut Pro later on.
I know I will need a bigger computer then.
    Thanks

There are many people using the basic (i5) 2012 MacMini and even older ones to edit complex films in FCP X so you should have no problems.
I have been using FCP 7 and FCP X since they came out on my 2008 iMac Core 2 Duo and am thinking of getting the same model as you rather than pay the astronomic price for a new 27" iMac.
The performance won't be quite as fast but it will be at least 4 times faster at rendering than my old iMac.

  • Apple Video Component Cable only for audio

I want to buy an Apple Video Component Cable to use it with an iPhone 3GS and also with an iPod 5G.
The cable will be connected to the TV and to the audio receiver.
I know that this cable is not compatible with the iPod 5G, but in this case I only want to use it to listen to music. Therefore, only audio with iPod 5G, audio/video with iPhone 3GS.
Does anyone know if using this cable, despite the fact that video won't work on iPod 5G, audio will work fine on iPod 5G?
I'd like to know that before I buy it.
    Thanks!
    Andrés

    I'll answer my self.
Yes, it does play music on the iPod 5th gen.

  • Video Reviews for Corporate Clients

I'm a 3D animator and I need to be able to post QuickTime video reviews that corporate clients can view reliably. The reason I mention that they are corporate clients is because they often times don't have the ability to install software, including upgrades, which means I have to assume that they aren't using the latest version of QuickTime.
I see embedded videos all the time on apple.com/trailers that look great and stream smoothly. I believe most of those videos are using the h264 codec, but I think I'm better off not using h264 since you need QT7 to decode it. Let's assume my clients are using QT6 and cannot upgrade due to IT department restrictions on their end.
That being the case, I'm probably better off using something like MPEG-4 Video as my compressor. The point being I want to use something that will give me the most bang for my bandwidth buck, quality-wise, while at the same time sticking with something legacy that older versions of QT can view.
My videos in Premiere are almost always D1 NTSC Widescreen 720x486, pixel aspect ratio (PAR) 1.2, and when I export them as an MOV, I export as 640x360 PAR 1.0 so I can keep it in a widescreen format and avoid PAR-related distortion. I save them out as MOV with PNG compression at 100% quality, so I can quickly convert them to anything the client needs via QT Pro, without having to re-render the Premiere project multiple times. It's a real time saver. Up till now, I've been putting FLV videos on the web, but I'd like to start using embedded QuickTime videos instead, because you get finer control out of the scrub bar in the QT player than you do with a Flash video.
So my question is this. What are the magic settings (don't laugh) I should use when I'm exporting an MOV that I intend on embedding into a web page? I've already read Apple's tutorial on this, found here:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/embed.html
...but that really just glosses over the topic, without giving you any recommended settings. I fully realize that the settings you use are extremely dependent on each individuals needs, due to video size, the type of content in the video, etc. However, we know the size I'm working with (640x360) and we know I'm showing complex animations with gradations of tone and hue.
Currently I'm setting my compressor as MPEG-4 Video, and I'm choosing "Hinted Streaming" for my streaming preset. I'm using all of the Hinted Streaming default settings.
    Thanks,
    Dustin

Last part answered first. No need for "hint" tracks unless your files are served via streaming server software. Just use "Fast Start". File size is smaller (no hint tracks) so you'll get a faster download.
Compression is an art form and there is no "magic" setting. You are correct in choosing MPEG-4 Video codec for backward compatibility.
Export is about two goals when working with Web based files. Quality is subjective and your viewers want "fast" and care less about quality than you think.
The best method is multiple exports. Use lower data rates and work your way up. Start with a ten second test export at various data rate keeping all of the other settings the same. You can compare these files side by side in QuickTime Pro by using the "Play all Movies" (View menu).
Since all of your files are going to bit a bit different what works for one may need "tweaking" in another export.

  • Creating video aps for Iphone downloads?

I didn't want to cross post the same post. I made the original one in the Compressor forum since my question dealt with video compression first.
    Here's the thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2582515&stqc=true
Can you create video files for Iphone Aps using programs like Final Cut or Imovie, or do you have to use separate programs like FLASH or Shockwave?

I bought Compressor, but took further advice on customising presets and codecs that I found online. The built in Apple H.264 codec doesn't produce as good a result as the freely available X.264 codec. You need the 1.2.27 version available from here:
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24173/x264encoder
You place the x264Encoder.component in Macintosh HD/Library/QuickTime/. Be very careful not to put it in QuickLook folder by mistake - bad apparently.
Follow the advice in this excellent article to set up the preset for x.264
    http://www.larryjordan.biz/compressor-x264-improve-video/
Having done all this, I set up a preset in both codecs that matched as completely as possible, ran them both on the same video source and compared the results. The x.264 codec is superior. It gives much cleaner results than the Apple one at the same file size.

  • RED ONE camera to FCP to compressor for DVD

My client used RED ONE camera for filming. He used FCP to edit it then exported it in 1920x1080 Apple ProRes 422 (HQ). He sent it to me by mail (external HD) for me to use that QT movie Apple ProRes 422 for Compressor to compress it into SD DVD MPEG-2 5.0 2-pass with Progressive (Best Quality). I used DVD Studio Pro and found it very unsatisfied with the quality of video because I'm seeing a lot of pixels around those letters during open/close credits. Not only that, I also see a lot of bad interlaced video. I set it up for Progressive and YET I'm still seeing interlaced in it. What's did I do wrong? How can I make it the best quality video for SD DVD from Red One camera or Apple ProRes 422 (HQ)? I know Blue-ray is the best answer but a lot of my costumers don't own blue-ray dvd player. (I'm sure you're aware that HD DVD don't work on any DVD players, only on Mac computer which is very unfortunate for me!) Please help! I'm flirting the deadline right now:)

    1. Take your sequence into an uncompressed 720x480 16x9 anamorphic sequence. It needs to be 720x480 first since thats the resolution of NTSC DVD - create a 720x480 uncompressed 16x9 anamorphic sequence
    2. With a bitrate calculator, you would need to determine the best bitrate. How long is your DVD? (include menus as well) plug it into the calc. here's a good one:
    http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm
    3. Export out through compressor as an MPEG2 file and the bitrates from above. make sure you match field order of your source if interlaced
    4. Import into DVDSP and author away

  • Wrong 'mini dvi to video' adapter for my 12" Powerbook 1.33

I recently bought the M9319 mini dvi - video adapter for my 12" Powerbook 1.33 to find that the mini dvi on the adapter is a different size to the one on the computer and the adapters supplied with the computer.
I've been doing a bit of research into this and it seems a bit of a grey area. Apple have not made it clear in advertising this product that it is only suitable for the newest 12" Powerbooks and even state that it will work with a 1.33 machine in their following article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86507
Has anyone had a similar experience, or suggest an alternative product that will work? Did Apple make an older version that works with the 1.33?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Graeme.

Just took the adapter to my local Apple store and they identified it as a mini VGA to video adapter - not what it said on the packaging!
I've noticed a few posts with this problem, so just double check before you leave the store that the packaging matches the product.
