Apple vs. Other Brands

First of all, I am a fairly new (18 months and counting) born-again Apple fan. Now to my question:
Are there any significant benefits outside of raw performance of having an Apple display versus some other brand (LG, Samsung, etc.)?
I just got a new MacBook and will be getting my wife one soon. What I want to do is set an external display with a nice, high resolution to remain stationary at a work station. The idea is that either of us could take our MacBook to the station and hook up the external display to do photo or video work, watch a movie, etc.
I have looked at a few monitors at some big box stores and they look pretty good. They also cost significantly less than the Apple displays. I understand that size and specs need to be accounted for to make a fair comparison, but beyond that, am I getting what I pay for (and paying a premium to have the Apple style and logo)?

It all comes down to what you're using it for.
Apple displays are known for their ability to produce very accurate colour, and the cinema displays continue this, along with good resolutions and brightness, especially with the 23" and 30" displays. They also look sexy.
However you can easily find cheaper monitors with better contrast ratios and much better response times. For example, if you played games (which is doubtful with a Mac), the 14ms response time of the Apple displays is horrible, and you'd be better to go with something like a Viewsonic that offers models with as little as 2ms times.
There are also some Samsung LCD monitors that not only offer contrast rations of 1000:1 or higher, but also include the ablility to rotate the screen 90° for a full page portrait view.
Since you'd just be using a monitor for recreational purposes, such as movies or just the convenience of a 2nd monitor, you can easily get a non-Apple display that will perform just as well for your needs, at probably half the price.

Will Other Brand Monitors work with MacPro?

Hi,
Just got a new Mac Pro Desktop 8-core only to find out my old Apple Studio Display 17" won't work without a $100 adapter. We're thinking of just buying a new monitor instead. My question is will other brands now work direclty with the new Macs - or would they also need adapters? Is a DVI port the same as a DVI-D port?

Thanks so much for your response, Niel, I really appreciate it! We went and bought a brand new Dell monitor for $238 - it's fully compatible with the new Mac, and it's 23" (my old one was a 17"), and the new Mac and new monitor are playing nicely together - so all's good!

Does Air Express Work with other brand Routers?

I just got an Airport Express. I can't seem to get it to work with my Linksys router. Are the supposed to work with other brands, or only Apple?

Since you now have two 802.11n AirPorts, you will want to take advantage of the "extend a network" feature this version offers instead of the 802.11g WDS.
Here's the basic setup to extend the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) with the AXn ...
o If practical, place the base stations in near proximity to each other during the setup phase. Once done, move them to their desired locations.
o Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.

Hate to say it but if the light doesn't even come on - sure sounds like a hardware issue (assuming you've got it plugged in: not meant to be insulting, just been there done that)
The good news: believe your still in warranty. Report the problem directly to Apple.

Welcome to the Apple community.
This feature has been introduced to make stolen phones useless to those that have stolen them.
However it can also arise when the user has changed their Apple ID details with Apple and not made the same changes to their iCloud account/Find My Phone on their device before upgrading to iOS 7.
The only solution is to change your Apple ID back to its previous state with Apple at My Apple ID, verify the changes, enter the password as requested on your device and then turn off "find my phone".
You should then change your Apple ID back to its current state, verify it once again, delete the iCloud account from your device and then log back in using your current Apple ID. Finally, turn "find my phone" back on once again.

If you want to change your iCloud ID or password on your phone go to Settings>iCloud and tap Delete Account, then sign back in with your updated information. Note: this only deletes the account and any synced data from your phone, not from iCloud. Provided you are signing back into the same account and not changing accounts it will be synced back to your device when you sign back in.

I meet a lot of 3G signal when a call signal disappears 3G! I read the manuals and anything I find the problem! I do so with other brands and other cell does not, the same goes when I receive a call!

Who is your carrier? Are you actually on 3G?
Do you have 3G turned on or off? Settings > General > Network > Enable 3G

Wifi direct not working with other brands

Is it not possible to to uae wifi direct with other brands like Samsung S3,5,6 or others? Because im trying to copy some huge file using wifi direct but it was unsuccessful.

I am able to connect to my tesco hudl and my MxQ tv box.

You can share them this way:
Suppose you and the person you're trying to share with (I'll call her Jane) have two separate computers with two separate Apple IDs. Each of those two computers have a current version of iTunes.
You could copy your book from your version of iTunes over to Jane's. How you do that depends on what types of computers you have, etc.
So now your book is sitting in Jane's iTunes. But you own the book, so Jane cannot access it. What you have to do, then, is authorize Jane to access the book you bought.
You do that on Jane's computer in iTunes by going to Store > Authorize This Computer in iTunes' menu. Enter your Apple ID and password there.
Then once Jane syncs her iPad to her iTunes, she will have access to your book.

AE Range vs. other brands

What's the consensus on the latest Airport Extreme base regarding range? I've read some that it's really good on distance for wireless use. Is that your experience?
How does it compare with other brands?
LinkSys? Netgear? Belkin? D-Link?
Bottom line... is it worth the $180 or are there better routers out there with wired/wireless support?

I'll second that. I'm running on b/g/n mode and I didn't have success with only N mode due to the fact I have two other b and g routers and a 5ghz phone system. Something was conflicting...
Now, I get 4 bars whether inside or outside and the range is twice that of my two other older Linksys routers.

N81 cant receive image from other (brand) mobiles

i have purchased a nokia n81(sd) and i realised that i cant receive images(ONLY) from other mobiles(other brand,with nokia mobiles no problem)... when a sony erricson for example tries to send a pictures it asks me to receive this message.. when i press "yes".. but in other device it appears that i havent accepted!!!!!!!!! thats happends only on pictures!!!!! videos and music works perfectly!!!!

Can i use any other branded headphone jack other than Apple jack ?

My doubt is that , will there be any defects caused to any apple product if use any other banded 2.5mm jack other than apple? If so ma i know what can be those defects or mal-functionings..? Pls help me because the apple jack is not serving me to listen to music when i go for jogging, it does not have good grip and hence it falls off my ears. Kindly help me with this issue.

I do not really understand what you are saying, if you could, specify. The standard jack is 3.5 mm by the way, and it should be 3.5 mm on your iPhone. Any device bought from Apple, including third party devices (Meaning from other producers, eg. Sony, Bose, etc) should work fine. You are not limited to using included EarPods. If you mean that you wish to take apart the device and replace the headphone jack built into the iPhone, I strongly recommend you not to, as it will void the warranty, and has an extremely likely chance to damage your iPhone.

Apple monitor or other brand?

I am giving up my macbook pro for the new macbook (size etc a factor). My intention is to have a large monitor to plug into when at home to do the work. I am a photographer/designer (Aperture etc) and am still doubtful about glossy screens (I was going to get the new 24 inch one), but also it seems you can get a good quality monitor from viewsonic, for example, that is 26 inches and a lot cheaper and i think matt screened. Also it seems the old 23 inch Apple monitor maybe discontinued..
In short any graphic designer/photographers input or experiences would be appreciated, oh, and i am assuming that one of the myriad connectors apple sell will allow me to connect anything to the new MacBook!
Also any tips on how to get the best from a glossy screen would be helpful (apart from working in the dark!!), I mean calibrating for more or less faithful reproduction.

You know, some of you chaps make me jealous!!! I have a single 20" HP monitor!!! (it is very nice though, an HP LP2065) However, this is more down to lack of space than anything. Wish I had the space for 2 monitors!
That said, if I did Charlene, I'd go for the two 23" models rather than the 30". 30", whilst plenty of space, could possibly make you less productive as you have to move your mouse over much more on screen real estate. You'll probably find better deals on 23" as well.
Bob is right. Apple are not the only fruit (if you forgive the weak pun). Dell, Acer, HP, Ilyama, LG etc all make at least 24" models. I know HP make 30" ones as well.
