Apple watch workout is way off on calories

I've used the apple watch workout app and the approximate calories burned is way off from what it should be. Is there any way to calibrate it so it will be more accurate? It shows only about half the calories burned that I know it should be.

Hi poolmanrob,
Yes, there is a way to calibrate your Apple Watch to improve the results shown in Workout and Activity.  By following the steps in the article linked to below, your Apple Watch will then be calibrated.

I also recommend going through the best practices outlined below to ensure you get the best Workout measurement.
Get the best measurement
Your Apple Watch will estimate your measurements during workouts based on the information that you entered during setup, but you can further improve its accuracy using these tips:
Wearing your Apple Watch regularly can improve the accuracy of the Activity and Workout apps.
Choose the Workout that best matches what you’re doing. For example, if you're running on a treadmill, choose Indoor Run.
For GPS accuracy when you walk, run, or cycle outdoors, select the appropriate Workout and bring your iPhone. This will also help calibrate the accelerometer in Apple Watch for times when you don’t have GPS, such as during treadmill workouts or when you're running outside without your phone.
To get the most accurate heart rate measurement when you use Workout, make sure your Apple Watch fits snugly on top of your wrist. The heart rate sensor should stay close to your skin.
You can also use another heart rate monitoring device, such as a chest strap. To pair an external heart rate monitor with your Apple Watch, tap the Settings app on the Home screen, then tap Bluetooth and select it under Health Devices. • My apple watch distance is way off

    Hey,
using the Workout app on the Watch is just not practicable. Are any of you experiencing exact distances?
I havent once. Though using iPhone 6 while running and no other apps besides the workout app running. Apple needs to fix this asap. Especially cause they put so much emphasis on the training abilities of the watch.
    Greets

    1. The Watch can only measure distance in one of two ways: it via GPS from the phone, or by estimating from your stride length and number of steps
    2. If it uses the GPS on the phone, the the phone and the watch have the same data
    3. It may be that the Workout app uses a different formal from (say) Runkeeper, and so comes up with different distances. In my case, the two apps are very close to each other but not identical
    4. If, for some reason, the watch has no GPS data to work with (your phone isn't with you; there is no GPS reception because of buildings or trees), the watch will attempt to calculate your distance from your stride length and number of steps. Your stride length may vary quite substantially for different reasons (changing gradient, changing terrain underfoot, fatigue, injury, time of day ...) and so the watch calculation my be quite wrong
    5. And, finally, the watch software is at version 1.0, and so may well need to be refined. Having said all that, mine seems pretty OK, but that might be luck
Please report your concerns at the Apple feedback pages (link below) - the more of us that do, the more likely Apple is to respond.

  • Apple watch workout

I logged a 45 minute indoor cycling workout via the workout app on my apple watch. However, the activity app says I've only completed 14/30 minutes of exercise today. Why the discrepancy and is there a way to fix it? (I know this is an app question, but I didn't find a community available for this topic.)

I did save the workout. I later did a 15 minute outdoor walk and saved that as well. When I pull up the activity app on my iPhone, and scroll through today, I can see the workouts listed as complete for a total of 60 minutes and the award I received (as it was my first outdoor cycle workout). But the green exercise loop is not correct... it says I have exercised 32/30 minutes.  I'll be doing another indoor workout on Thursday, so I will see if this happens again.

  • Apple Watch workouts app and iPhone gps

This weekend, I used my Apple Watch's workout feature for the first time, for Philadelphia's Broad Street Run.  This is a 10 mile race.  When I started out, I noticed that the Apple Watch was indicating a pace far faster than I was actually moving (I could tell by the mile markers, and my own time).  At the conclusion of the race, I stopped the run in the workouts app, and the app shows that I ran 12.32 miles.  I checked my phone a few times while running, and did not see the GPS icon in the upper right, so I can only conclude that the workoutapp wasn't using the phone's gps.  Has anyone else had this issue?

Check to see if motion calibration and distance are turned on under Location Services, System Services. Also, the watch won't use GPS to tell your distance rather to better hone the algorithms its accelerometer uses to calculate your steps (and imply distance). Hence their claim that you need to train it and it will improve its accuracy.

  • Apple watch will not turn off when charging

    Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone is able to turn off their apple watch when it is connected to the charger?
When I connect the charger, the "power off" option is greyed out.. If I disconnect it from the charger and turn it off... It will turn itself back on as soon as I re-connect the charger!
    Any tips would be appreciated!

Mine doesn't turn off but the display goes off after a little while. I believe that that's the design behaviour. Any specific reason why you want to turn it off on the charger?

  • Apple Watch calorie burn

MY Apple Watch is showing a much lower calorie burn, about half, compared to equipment at my gym and other apps such as Runkeeper. Why is this? I was expecting a difference but not that much. For example of the cross trainer I work out for 40 minutes with my heart beat over 170, the cross trainer says 55o calories, the Runkeeper app is similar and the watch was 240 calories.

  • Is space black colour in aluminium and steel watch  or will chip-off like iPhone 5, I m looking to buy aluminium model in black, but scared, because apple rejected to swap the black with whit, so horrible service.

is Apple watch (aluminium model or steel model) in space black colour specially in aluminium model, not going on chip off, it happened in iPhone 5. And Apple does not seem to be worried about iPhone 5, and denied to swap with white one.

I asked this same question in another post, those that were burned by the black coating in the past I think will be skeptical on the black watch until we get some feedback from actual owners. I have ordered both black and plain aluminum since I won't see until June anyway, I figure there is plenty of time to cancel the one I don't want

  • Apple watch resting calories seem far too high

I've had the apple watch since the 24th, and I've worn it continuously until bedtime. All of my metrics are accurate (height/weight).
My Resting Calories (found in the iPhone activity app by swiping left under the move row) are listed as 3600 Cal. This seems incredibly high to me. My BMR is 2100 Cal, as calculated here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/tools/bmr-calculator
I've used other BMR sites and they all give me a similar number.
Is anyone else having this issue? I can't comprehend how it could be so high. If I ate 3600 Cal in one day (without exercising) I would be gaining weight rapidly!

    No.

  • Apple watch First Workout Award

I've completed two "Other" Workouts on my Apple Watch [ one 45 mins and the other 57 mins ]and I can see the Workout recorded on the Activity Tracker app on my iPhone. However I've not gotten an achievement award for my first workout - the award says "Earn this award the first time you work out for at least 5 minutes with the Workout app."

TThe same occurred for me (I had done a couple of Other workouts) and found out that you only reciebe the award/achievement after you complete a workout for 5 min and more EXCEPT for "Other" specific workouts.

  • Creative way to give backordered Apple watch as a gift

    Hi Everyone,
I ordered the Apple watch for my husband for his 50th birthday.  Unfortunately, it will not be here on time.
Anybody have any creative ideas for how to give a gift that's backordered?  I don't want to just print out the receipt or a picture of the watch.
My best idea right now is to put a watchband around an actual apple and wrap it up in a box.  If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know.
    Thanks!

Here's what I did, similar situation:
I ordered an Apple Watch for a Mother's Day present, May 10th.  However, the earliest ship date is got is May 13th, and that's within a two week range.  So I ordered an extra charger which shipped the very next day.  So now at least I have a nice box with the Apple logo that says, 'Magnetic charging cable' for an Apple Watch.  She will be thrilled.

  • On the Apple Watch, has anyone figured out a way (if possible) to remove some of the redundant auto responses available when using Messages?

There are some responses that always show which I would never use, such as BRB, that I'd like to completely remove. There are other responses that are excessively redundant. I don't need Thx, Thanks, Thank you. and Thanks! as separate available auto responses every single time. Anyone else had better luck figuring that out?
Overall I'm really liking the Watch so far. The only thing bringing it down is sone of those small details.

Visit the Apple Watch app, then go to My Watch > Messages > Default Replies.
You can add your own but there will still be Apple auto default replies too.
Kinda lame.  Hope there's a new option to get rid of those in the future. I'd rather ALWAYS dictate and not have those 'smart responses' there at all.
