Apple Works basics

I'm just moving from Microsoft to Mac and have only been using it for about one month. I'm very "computer-challenged" to begin with. So, you'll probably be hearing from me. Either I have no idea how to use Help, or it's of no use.
For starters: In MS-Word, when I click on Print, I can specify the quantity of copies, specify the pages to print, etc. How do I do this in AW? How do I get to see a 'palette' of characters when I choose Symbol or Wingding as the font? How can I get my most-used fonts to appear at the top of the font choices? When I click on AW on the dock it tells me AW has quit unexpectedly and asks if I want to relaunch, report it, or ignore. If I go to Apple, Recent items and choose a file it opens fine, but gives me this message when I close the file.

HI CC,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
"For starters: In MS-Word, when I click on Print, I can specify the quantity of copies, specify the pages to print, etc. How do I do this in AW?"
When you press command-P (or go File > Print) the Print dialogue will open and allow you to specify the number of copies and choose to print All (pages) or specify a range of pages. The Copies and Pages popup has other options as well, including one that is specific to the software you are using. In AppleWorks, this menu (called AppleWorks) lets you choose to print only the left (even) or right (odd) pages.
The Print dialogue is part of the system's toolbox, and works the same way with all software that uses it.
"How do I get to see a 'palette' of characters when I choose Symbol or Wingding as the font? How can I get my most-used fonts to appear at the top of the font choices?"
You can get the full palette of characters in any font using the Character Palette. Go Apple menu > System Preferences > International > Input menu. Check the Character Palette (and Keyboard Viewer if you'll be using AppleWorks*) You can also check any number of keyboard layouts which you can then change 'on the fly' using the Input Menu which will appear toward the right end of the menu bar as a small flag corresponding to your currently selected keyboard layout.
BUT AppleWorks is legacy software, and cannot use the full Unicode character set or any of the Unicode encoded keyboard layouts. For AppleWorks you are restricted to Roman encoded KB layouts and the Mac Roman character set. Anything available from the keyboard in any font can be seen using Keyboard Viewer. Extra characters are available using the modifier keys (mostly option and shift-option, but try other combinations as well).
Characters useable by AppleWorks can be dragged from the Character Palette into an Apple
works document. Characters outside the range useable by AppleWorks will show in the Character Palette, but cannot be dragged into an AppleWorks document.
"When I click on AW on the dock it tells me AW has quit unexpectedly and asks if I want to relaunch, report it, or ignore. If I go to Apple, Recent items and choose a file it opens fine, but gives me this message when I close the file."
This is probably a corrupted preferences issue. See Peggy's User Tips Library post AppleWorks has stopped working correctly for details and the cure.
Regards,
Barry
PS: Although AppleWorks is a terrific piece of software, it has not been updated since 2004, and has been declared EOL by Apple (ie. Apple no longer sells or supports it). If you are just starting to use it, and particularly if you are using only the word processor module, I would recommend that you look for an alternate application.

    WoW!
How increadibly poor quality support one gets with apple care...... too many reasons to even want to get into and list.
I installed tiger to find alot of my apps missing. Tech support said to install the bundeled software from my old disk. So I did and some of the apps are back on. The most used, basic and still gone is apple works. So I called apple care back. They closed shop at 6:00 PM. How useful! Great!
I whiped my system because it was really slow, buggy, and a few apps wouldn't work anymore... mainly the DVD player which apple care said was a hardware problem and send it in for repairs. One of my smart ***, PC using, Apple hating geek friends just laughed and said he could get my computer to play a DVD. He downloaded VLC and proceeded to play a DVD on the hardware apple care said was broken.
Well it looks like I have to figure out where apple works went on my own.... can someone here point me in the right direction?

Hello, it is on your first disk. But, it's somewhat concealed.
Insert your OS X Panther Restore disk (or whichever OS version came with your computer).
Then, you'll find a program on the disk labeled "Install Bundled Software Only".
    Run that.
Now, go through the program to the "Installation Type" Screen.
Then, click on the "Customize" button.
    Now, uncheck everything.
Now, expand the subgroup AppleWorks Languages.
Now, check only the language you want for AppleWorks (English for example).
Now, Continue the installation, and it will install only Appleworks in the language you selected.
So, if you checked AppleWorks English, it would install the English version of AppleWorks.
I know the way it's worded would make you think it would only install the language pack. But, it is actually choosing which version of AppleWorks to install.
Now, if you selected all the versions, it would install one copy with multiple language files.
This does work as I have done it.
    I hope this helps.
P.S., if you'd like, go ahead and click the "Helpful" or "Solved" buttons on any of the posts / replies above if you feel they were helpful or adequately answered your question.

  • Apple works  or iwork vs. microsoft office for mac

I am a first-time mac user and unfortunately, did not have apple works loaded onto my imac. I did have a beta version of office for mac with which I am familiar. My question, since I was unable to trial apple works or iwork, is whether I should go with office for mac or apple works/iwork? My basic needs are word processing/home use. Hope someone can help me out as I need to purchase something.

AppleWorks and iWork are both less expensive than MS Office.
You should have trial versions of both iWork and MS Office on your iMac, according to this software list from the specifications page:
iLife ’06 (includes iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD, iWeb, GarageBand),
Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Test Drive,
    iWork (30-day trial),
    Quicken 2006 for Macintosh,
    Big Bang Board Games,
    Comic Life,
    Omni Outliner, and
    Apple Hardware Test
Although my personal preference is AppleWorks, I'd hesitate to recommend it in your case. Appleworks is not, and likely never will be native to the intel OS X environment, and runs through Rosetta on the new machines. Although it runs well, and is a viable choice for anyone currently using it, AppleWorks is at the end of its development cycle. Unless you need its spreadsheet and database capabilities, you're probably better off looking at Pages in iWork.
Pages is a competent wp and page layout application, and for some long term users of AppleWorks, has become their favourite for this purpose. Pages includes some basic spreadsheet functions in inserted tables.
Office is an 'entrepreneur' level suite of applications, and as such contains a larger feature set in each application than either iWork or AppleWorks. But given your stated needs, it's probably a bigger hammer than you need, and one with a longer and steeper learning curve than you'd want. If you NEED to share files with Windows/MS Office users, there are a couple of free alternatives—OpenOffice.org, which requires you to install X11, Apple's Xwindow implementation, and NeoOffice, which runs in Java, which you will already have installed.
    Others may have different recommendations.

  • I have some documents from apple works from OSX how can I convert them in Pages in OS Maverick? Thanks Harold

How can I convert documents from apple works to pages in OSX Mavericks? Harold

If you're using a version of Pages prior to 5.0, it can import AppleWorks 6 word processing documents directly. Otherwise, reopen them in AppleWorks and export them in a format that Pages can read; for Pages 5.0, those are listed here.

  • I have 2? How do I sync selected photos from my IPad to my IMac w/o losing all photos on my IPad and getting the phoos o my IMac. ou see I have two IMacs with different sets of photos. Also want to convert all Apple works docs to pages docs on my IMac.

I have 2? How do I sync selected photos from my IPad to my IMac w/o losing all photos on my IPad which will be replaced with the photos on my IMac.You see I have two IMacs with different sets of photos. Also want to convert all Apple works docs to pages docs on my IMac. Is there and app available to do the former. many thanks. b

The iPad and related software is designed to sync with only one computer. I suggest transferring the photos from one of your iMacs to the other so that all photos are on one Mac. Same for all other files you want to sync over.
To get those AppleWorks files to the iPad you'll have to determine if Pages will open them. If it will then use the file sharing feature of iTunes to copy them to Pages on your pad.
If Pages will not open the AppleWorks files directly you'll have to save them in some format that Pages will read. These include but may not be limited to Pages and Word formats.

  • Apple Works 6 doesn't work with Lion...

I just downloaded Lion & now several "PowerPC" applications no longer work on my computer.  I never use Apple Works 6, except for my Christmas Card labels...and now I can't access them.  I have called into Apple Support - and they can't help me either.  They suggested that I find a 3rd party software by googling it to find a file converter...but I have had ZERO luck, everything I find is a download for a PC, not a Mac.
Can anyone help?  I can't open it in Excel (its a bunch of crap on my screen) & Numbers won't open it either...I'm rendered helpless...

When you say that your label data was kept in Appleworks was it kept in a database?
If so there is probably nothing that can open it under Lion.
I know when I did my migration from AW, all of my document I was able to open in Pages and all of my spreadsheet I was able to open in numbers.
The information I had in AW databse I had to export using AW and then I imported it to Bento. I did all of this before migrating to Lion.
If this information is that important to you, it may be necessary for you to run Snow Leopard again at least on a partition to get the data exported.

  • WHY DOES APPLE WORKS 6.2.9 NOT WORK?

I installed the original Apple Works 6.2 in my computer.
Now I want to update, but the updater that I've found on the Apple website just doesn't work.
Everytime I try to use it, I get this message: THE DEFAULT LOCATION REQUIRED FOR THIS INSTALL COULD NOT BE FOUND. THIS INSTALL WILL BE CANCELLED.
What can I do? I need the new version, because I have an important Apple Works document that was created with it, and it won't open with the old version that I have.

    Hello
It seems that you are trying to apply the wrong updater.
You must take care that there are two english AppleWorks 6, the US (continental) one and the International english one.
The updater must match the application version.
The best formula is to download the updater from this link:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120213
which give the ability to select the needed updater.
If you are not sure of which version you are using, run this short AppleScript while the app is running:
set version to version of application "AppleWorks 6" as string
display dialog "You are using AppleWorks " & version
with the US continental version it will display:
    "You are using AppleWorks 6.2"
with the International version it will display:
    "You are using AppleWorks Z-6.2"

  • How do I convert apple works 6 docs to open in 10.7

I have a MacBook pro running 10.7. I have many docs created in AW 6 that will no longer open. I tried opening the WP with Pages and the spread sheets with Numbers, but I get a message that "This document was created with an unsupported version of Apple works." I can't open any of the drawing docs at all. What should I do short of firing up my old Mac Mini and saving them all as .doc or .xls versions.
    Thanks, Ed

Another option: Run Appleworks 6 in Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) installed into Parallels in Lion:

  • Can I extract images from Apple Works?

    Hi!
I am a graphic designer. A client just sent me a disk of artwork, which turned out to be a single Apple Works file with a dozen high-resolution images in it. Is there a simple way to extract those images (for use in other applications such as Photoshop) at their original resolution?
I know all the data is in there, since the file weighs in at about 90mb. But I can't drag-and-drop to the desktop, and cutting/pasting seems to give me reduced-sized images. (In other words, if a photo is 4" x 3" in the AppleWorks document, I get a 4" x 3" 72dpi image when I paste into Photoshop. )
edit > picture info does show me the total size of the image, and lets me know which are high-rez. I can click on "show picture bounds" and the image expands to full size, cropped only by the page. However, I cannot cut-and-past that image into PhotoShop... Apple Works doesn't seem to let me copy it at all.
It would make my day if there turns out to be a simple command or program that could just pull out all embedded images.
    Thanks!
    Power PC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   AppleWorks 6.2.7

It's not clear, but do you have AppleWorks that you are opening this document with? If so, open the file, I assume it's an AppleWorks draw document, & Save As… PICT (choose it from the File Format drop-down menu). You could do it as one big image & then crop in Photoshop or copy & paste each image into to a blank AppleWorks draw document & Save As… each one as an individual PICT file.
PICT is the preferred graphics format for AppleWorks. Any images imported into AppleWorks other than PICT are changed to 72 dpi where PICT retains the native resolution. Exporting/saving as PICT also seems to result in better images. Of course, if the original images weren't PICT when they were put into the AppleWorks file, you're not going to be able to improve them any more.

  • Double click on .doc file opens Apple Works not Word 98

I'm using Tiger on a 14" iBook. I have Office 98 installed which works OK running under the classic environment.
Only thing is, I can't get it to start when I double click on a .doc file.
I've been thru all the recommended stuff, select the file, "get info", change the application etc... Whatever I try, it just reverts to Apple Works. When I double click the .doc file, I get Apple Works instead of MS Word.
Has any one got any ideas? Is this because Word 98 runs under Classic?
Also, I can open a word (.doc) document by dragging it onto the dock icon for MS Word 98. But if I try the same with an Excel spreadsheet,(dragging it onto the excel icon) it doesn't work. Tiger doesn't seem to like the .xls extension. Was this extension used for something else?

This document talks about applications which may use XLS:
    http://filext.com/detaillist.php?extdetail=XLS
If it was used as a Microsoft Works document, you may need to convert it to Excel first.
Not sure if Excel handles Works documents, but Appleworks does to a limited extent, and Maclinkplus by http://www.dataviz.com/ will better allow you to be able to handle files of unknown type that are spreadsheets.
To change the application a document opens under control-mouse click a document with that extension and select Open With. Select the Other... and find the application in the dialog to open with, and check "Always Open With" if you want to open all documents with that extension with a specific application.

  • When I downloaded Pages my Apple Works 6 now doesn't open.

When I downloaded Pages my Apple Works 6 now doesn't open.

    Hello,
are you sure that your documents are word processing documents ? Ie. older versions of Pages are normally able to open AppleWorks 6.0 word processing document while KeyNote can open AppleWorks 6.0 presentation documents ; but the newest version of Pages, i.e. Pages 5.0 is no longer able to open them...
If you have no success with Pages, you can also try to open them with the latest version of LibreOffice or you can take a look at http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/aw/page1.html to find other solutions...

  • Is Apple working on?

Is Apple working on the ability to download applications onto your IPhone? Hackers made Jailbreak but I want an authorized Apple version that doesn't void my warranty.

They're releasing a software developer's kit in Feburary - you should see more applications after that.

  • How do i email apple works 6.2.9 spreadsheets, how do i email apple works 6.2.9 spreadsheets

How do i email appleworks 6.2.9 spreadsheets in a PDF tupw format without getting a jumble of text?

If you have the iWork application Numbers you can open and use AW 6.2.9 spread sheets and save in this format. Or you can export the ss opened in Numbers as PDF, Excel, or CSV. I don't know about Excel or CSV but the PDF is a fixed picture and will not allow functions.
I have just tested a newly created AW 6.2.9 SS doc with my G4 PowerBook (OS X 10.5.8). I opened and saved the new AW 6.2.9 SS in iWork 09 Numbers native format then emailed this to myself. I opened the email with my MacBook Pro (MId 2010 OS X 10.7.4,) and saved the SS Doc to the desktop. It opened with a double click in  iWork 09 Numbers and was fully functional.
What I have done with my Claris Works and Apple Works ss docs is convert all to numbers which maintains the ability to alter and copy the data. Getting the Claris Works docs converted required an older version of Apple works that will read them and allow the saves to be read by v6.2.9.

  • I need to access apple works 6 docs in lion

    Hi there,
I upgraded to lion but backed up my disk using time machine beforehand. Now time machine is not recognised and want to be set up again. I have files in the time machine that I need to see but can not access. I still have the apple works 6 files on my mac but lion will not open them. I really need to see these files so that I can rework them in a format that lion recognises.......HELP
    Thanks
    Bo

Do you still have the grey disks that came with your G5 iMac? If so, the AppleWorks 6 installer is on the second disk. Otherwise you can purchase AppleWorks 6 from Hardcore Mac, Amazon or eBay. If you decide to go with Amazon or eBay, don't be put off by the "old version" labels. Any version of AppleWorks 6 can be updated to v6.2.9.  Note that AppleWorks has individual updaters for 15 different languages & you must use the one for the version of AppleWorks 6 you have installed. The US English updater is available by clicking the blue Download button of the page I linked. The other updaters are listed on the page.
EDIT: If you are still using OS X 10.6.2, I strongly suggest you update to the latest version of Snow Leopard, OS X 10.6.8. You can download the combo update from this page.
