Apple Xsan MDC vs. Adics StoreNext as MDC and mangled files?

Hi,
we have recently experienced some issues with Indesign, Photoshop and Quark Xpress files on our Xsan volumes. These Xsan volums are controlled by an Apple Xsan client.
The problem is, that upon the first opening of a document directly from the SAN volume and saving it, after you have made some modifications to it, it reverts to an earlier state of the document.
Now, I would like to know, if anyone of you, who is using ADIC' StoreNext as an MDC has also experienced this behaviour and what your opinion is about either MDCs when it comes to performance.

What is your performance now?
I am using ADIC as MDC. And happy with the performance as it is. Would like it to be better but I do not think that is a fault of the software. Adobe apps are very sensitive to slow latency. I have had odd issues over 100mb network connections. However this should be much faster. I assume the file systems are mounted as XSAN volumes. But I can not explain the behavior.

Error message on login to XSAN MDC and clients

Hi,
I installed a new XSAN system with SLServer,10.6.1 and XSAN 2.2 then updated XSAN to 2.2.1.
The system works fine, the only thing whenever I login from client or server I have an error message popping for all FC attached LUNs, " the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" I did a quick search on the net and it seems to be related missing AppleXsanFilter.kext. But for my case the kext is present at the expected location.
When I click Ignore on the message window, the message dissapears. I didnt try Initialize, I dont want to destroy my XSAN volume, but the users are pretty curious about what's the message is and if they click the wrong button, what happens.
Is there any way to have a message free login?
BTW, whoever login into the system, XSAN user, local user etc, the mesasage appears for each and every LUN attached.

Hi "bonematrix" - thanks for your suggestion. I found the Help icon but was unable to find "Change, delete or reorder wifi networks" under WiFi. I called my internet provider because earlier in the year I had problems accessing my e-mail because they had changed some of the security settings. They tell me that what is happening is not related to anything they did in this respect although they did check into it for me. It seems you are absolutely my last resort. I would so appreciate you providing me with the explanation of how to accomplish this. I am desparate!!

HT2518 i have my photographs( professional artist Photos) on my photoshop album, on my windows xp pc. i'm hoping to get a new apple pc soon. i'm not pc savvy and these files are essential to my practice will i be able to transfer them to apple mac?

i am converting to mac desktop, have a macbook pro. my body of work ( photos artists) is on my old windows xp. i have photoshopalbum 2which is a dream to use , but mostly outdated by other systems. can i easily transfer this body of photos so tht i can use it with my website, and other software and hardware.

It is quite easy to transfer your files to the new Mac.
When you start up your new Mac for the first time, it will guide you through the steps of setting up the operating system, and one of the steps will ask you to restore files from another PC, Mac or external drive.
At this point, you can install Windows Migration Assistant on your old PC, choose the option to transfer files from another PC on the Mac and follow the on-screen steps. It will let you choose what you want to transfer, so make sure you transfer the folder with your photographs (normally, Pictures).
After setting up your computer, you will have a lot to learn because it is a completely new operating system. Can i deleteC:\ProgramData\Apple\Installer Cache\Apple Mobile Device Support 3.4.1.2 and similar files?

they take up a huge amount of memory...is it ok to delete them?

Check "Open safe files" in Safari and define docx and xlsx extensions in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.DownloadAssessment.plist not work. Old doc and xls files was auto opened successfully...

Yes, but there at least you are talking to people who all use the app, while in this forum (which is for hardware and not software in any case, so already off the mark, since the problem has nothing to do with hardware), it is probably a minority.

How to upgrade OS on XSAN MDCs?

I have looked all around, but cannot seem to find a guide to help me upgrade my XSAN MDCs to the latest version of MAC OSX server. What do I back up? Do I do the primary or the secondary first? Do I have to disconnect anything? Do I have to do anything special with Open Directory too?

For Xsan, you want to backup the /Library/Filesystems/xsan directory.
I would recommend a full system backup if possible.
Then you need to make an archive of your OD Master in Server Admin. I usually also export my users and groups out of Workgroup Manager as well, just in case.
You will then want to stop any Xsan volumes, and apply the Xsan 2.2 update. (Xsan 2.1.1 is not compatible with 10.6) Primary MDC first.
Then upgrade your primary to 10.6 and start the volume. If you have any problems, you can check the logs or revert to your backup. Worst case, you will have a backup MDC and (hopefully) an OD replica to fail to while you figure out what went wrong.

Backup MDC and ADIC license.dat file

My system is 2 G5 Xserve's, one as the MDC and one as the backup controller, about 2.7 TBytes of storage, and a Solaris 10 StorNextFX client that does most of my sharing to the rest of my network through NFS. ( everyone still running version 1.3 )
This morning, I restarted the MDC and during the time that it was down the backup controller took control of the SAN..
My problem is that the SUN StorNext client gave an error about being unable to renew the license for the filesystem, which I suspect is because I neglected to put a copy of the license.dat file into /Library/Filesystems/Xsan/config on the backup controller. I wasn't able to get the SUN to "refind" the SAN until I had restarted the backup MDC ( to make it jump back to the MDC ), and then restarted the SUN... ( bit of a pain )
OK... My question is..... I just put a copy of the license.dat file that is on the MDC into the similar place on the backup MDC , but will it work ? Or do I need to do something else. ( really hate to have to test this by rebooting the world again )..

My current installs have a license.dat file for the primary MDC and a seperate license.dat file for the backup MDCs based on the cvfsid of each of the MDCs.
If you are using the exact same license.dat file for both MDCs then I'm not sure that it will work.

I did the speed test with AJA HDD Bench Tools, the result is write 190Mbps, Read 210Mbps.
But, I got the message "Dropped framed occured" when I do the capturing and Editing simultaneously.
I asked to apple people, they told me that Apple XSAN only supports the Apple XserveRaid, not Third-party
Products. I am really wondering it is true or not.
And, What is the best system to configure SAN with Apple XSAN?

We've got a similar setup with some Rorke arrays and really had no problems so far (aside from the usual XSAN 1.3 stuff). The reason we went for Rorke and not for the XRaid is simple: Apple doesn't have 4gig yet and we really need the bandwidth to get decent 2K playback.
We've never really had dropped frames as far as I know. Did you try having it as a 'normal' disk array, so just directly attached and HFS+ formatted? If it shows dropped frames there as well you might want to check your cabling or controller/array.

Actually, everyone missed one point, when a device is priced, the cost of icloud storage space for that device is also included in it that is why they are able to give you 5gb each for each user ID, in nutshell there is nothing free coming with apple device purchase, it is paid for. What they are trying by giving only 5gb per user ID irrespective of the number of devices used is pure broadlight looting, they take money from you when you buy each device and give you nothing, This is a case of goods and services bought but not fully deliverd ie apple can be suied for discreminatory treatment towards it's users. I wonder why no one tried this yet in America where everyone sue everyone for petty things..... there is no one to take up this issue? . if tim got any love for the guys who shell out money for the devices his company makes, he should be implimenting this as priority before someone wake up from sleep and sue him.

I have just reset my ipad as my apple id was disabled, but once reset I went to download an app and it said apple id disabled again? What is wrong and how can I fix it?

Apple ID being disabled is a different error, and one not related to your iPad.

The advanced adjustments in the Highlights & Shadows tool were combined into the "Mid Contrast" slider in Aperture 3.3 and later. If you have any images in your library that were processed in a version of Aperture before 3.3, there will be an Upgrade button in the Highlights & Shadows tool in the upper right, and the controls you asked about under the Advanced section. Clicking the Upgrade button will re-render the photo using the new version of Highlights & Shadows, and the Advanced section will be replaced with the new Mid Contrast slider. With the new version from 3.3 you probably don't need the Advanced slider, but if you want to use the older version you can download it from this page:

Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

This is called "extended desktop mode". It's an extension of the desktop off to the right (by default) of your MBair screen. Grab an app and drag it off the right side of your MBair screen and it will appear on the TV.
To mirror your MBair screen on the TV you can press Command F1. This will toogle between mirror and extended desktop.
You can find all the settings in System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement tab.
