Applecare help!!!

I just got my custom build macbook pro with applecare protection. When I went to pick it up at the store, all the manager have me was the laptop. Am I supposed to get a physical applecare protection pack with installment disk inside or do I have to the apple store to activate it? I didn't even get any activation code or anything.
Sorry... I've never used a Mac before, a first time user so I don't really know how everything works

Type the serial number of your Mac into this page.
https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
And it will show you what warranty coverage you have. If it doesn't say it has the Applecare extended warranty contact Apple.
Does your sales receipt show that you bought, paid for, the Applecare?
You use to get a package, No disc of any sort, with a slip of paper that had an Activation code you used to activate it on the Apple website. Not sure if that is still the case when you buy directly from an Apple store or at the Apple online store and you also buy Applecare at the same time. It might be Auto activated.

  • Kernel Panics right after AppleCare Help

    Greetings All,
So, my PBG4 1.25 w/ 1Gig ram failed on me awhile back--turns out the logic board needed to be replaced. Luckily, I was still covered under AppleCare. They replaced my logic board, but since I've had it returned, I get repeated Lock-Down and Kernel Panics up the wazoo! :*( ANYONE HELP? Dr. Smoke, I'd appreciate your expertise here. Thanks for taking the time, all.
    Blessings,

Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.25Ghz, 1GIG Ram, New Logic board per AppleCare

Hi, sbguy72. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1. What specific model of PowerBook G4 (PBG4) do you have? Is this the 15-inch FireWire 800 (FW8000) model that came default with a 1.25 GHz processor, or are you running a an older PBG4 with a processor upgrade? Why I ask will become clear later.
    2. Your panic logs indicate the following:2.1. All are 0x300 panics, e.g.
    Unresolved kernel trap(cpu 0): 0x300 - Data access
    and
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0xFFFF0003): 0x300 - Data access
The 0x300 (Data Access) exception indicates the processor could not perform a data memory access. Potential causes, in general terms, include RAM problems, hard disk corruption, and programming errors.
"Programming errors" in this case can include invalid instructions and violations of protected memory, however it is often difficult to differentiate a programming error from a RAM or hard disk problem since the latter two issues can cause a valid instruction to appear invalid.
2.2. In the kernel-loadable modules section of the backtrace, the logs are citing kernel extensions related to storage, primarily your hard drive. This is indicated by the following lines in various logs:
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
    com.apple.iokit.IOStorageFamily(1.5)@0x4a0000
    and
Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):
    com.apple.driver.KeyLargoATA(1.1.0f1)@0x63d000
    dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOATAFamily(1.6.0f2)@0x4bd000
    com.apple.iokit.IOATAFamily(1.6.0f2)@0x4bd000
This is where my question about your PB G4's model comes in:
    • The reference to "KeyLargo" implies the IC (integrated circuit) that controls I/O in certain PowerBook models. In those models (PB G4 with 667, 800, 867, or 1 GHz processors) the KeyLargo IC is responsible for hard drives, USB, Audio, Wireless LAN, modem, and the PMU.
    • The PBG4 FW800 that shipped with a 1.25 GHz processor does not use the KeyLargo IC. Instead, it uses the later Intrepid IC, which integrates both memory and I/O control.
I'm not sure if the PBG4 FW800 still uses the KeyLargoATA driver with the Intrepid IC. This jumped out at me so I thought I should mention it.
However, in either case, the panic logs are also flagging IOATA-related devices, generally hard drives although this can also include optical drives.3. Overall the kernel-loadable modules above seem to imply a hard-drive related problem, e.g. your Mac's hard drive, or an attached external drive. They could also imply a continuing logic board problem. The 0x300 again implies RAM, hard drive, or programming issues.
    4. What were you doing when the panics occurred?
    5. To cut to the chase, see my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics.
Despite the clues above, bear in mind that my FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work through to the end, following the instruction in the order specified, including the "If all else fails..." section if a cause or resolution is not found in an earlier troubleshooting step therein.
    Good luck!

  • I need serious help! Applecare help!

I purchased Applecare along with my iPhone 5 months ago, but just found out it doesn't come pre-loaded onto the device. I do not know where the receipt or the Applecare card/booklet is. Is there anyway I can still activate it onto my iPhone? (I ordered my phone through sprint.com not apple)

Check here to see if AppleCare is active:

  • HT201250 I am very frustrated. New to iMac products. Just bought a 27" iMac two days ago. Received no manual, no booklet with ID registration number, etc. Need help migrating PC to iMac. How do I get in touch?

Need help migrating pc to imac. Do not have manual. Trying to get infornation online, but, cannot get an answer.
I have downloaded pc migration assistant to pc windows 8 pro. Was able to get imac to finally give me "the number"
Did the same with pc received number once, not same as imac. Pop up window with info dissappers and cannot recover
What am I doing wrong? Paid extra for extended support package and it took hours to finally get it registered and approved.
However, no help. Yikes, I feel like a make another great mistake!

First: If you purchased AppleCare you should call back at 1-800-APL-CARE and ask for further assistance.  You'll want to learn how to retrieve your operating system version and your IMac's serial number as you'll need these for when you call AppleCare:
Click on the Black Apple in the top left hand corner of your Imac's physical monitor
Click on About this Mac from the drop down menu
Below the silver Apple and "OS X" it will say "Version 10.x.x"  (If this number is not 10.8.4, run Software Update by hitting the button marked "Software Update")
Click on this number twice in a row.  This is your machine's serial number.  (zeros can be used; the letter "O" is never used).
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1349 for details how to find serial numbers on Apple products
If you have an Apple ID (you can create one at appleid.apple.com), you can login to supportprofile.apple.com, register an Apple product, and sign up for VoicePass, which, if you give your product a name e.g. Maria's Imac, you can speak that over the phone and skip having to give the serial number when you call.
If you have an Apple ID, you can also call AppleCare and ask them to activate VoicePass.
This is the link for your tech specs: http://support.apple.com/kb/SP667
This is the link for your quick start guide: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/imac_late2012_quickstart.pdf
This is the link for important product information: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/imac_late2012_quickstart.pdf
Second: this is an educated guess: Your new Imac and your PC need to be either on the same wifi network or you need to connect them physically with an Ethernet cable (available at Radio Shack, Wal Mart, etc).  My guess is that they are not, and so your IMac and PC are not talking to each other.  That might be why you are seeing a different code on the PC.
Time Machine would not be relevant to your issue.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796 is the link to relevant instructions, however it left out some housekeeping you should do on your Imac before you begin a migration
Run Software Update on the IMac to confirm that the latest updates are installed.
On the IMac, make sure that you have the latest versions of any third-party software.
On the source Mac, open System Preferences, click Sharing, and make sure there is a name in the Computer Name field.
Do not let either computer go to sleep while you are attempting to migrate. To disable sleep on the IMac
Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu.
Choose Energy Saver from the View menu.
Adjust the "Computer sleep:" slider to Never. (Change this back after the migration is done).
You can adjust "Display Sleep" to a few minutes - this won't affect the migration
Uncheck the box if checked next to "Put Hard Disks to sleep when possible"
I don't know Windows 8 but this link looks promising as to how to disable sleep: http://techmell.net/how-to/disable-enable-sleep-mode-hibernate-windows-8/
Once you've done this, either connect both Mac and PC to the same wifi network and surf the web with each to confirm that connection is working - or connect them to each other with an Ethernet cable.
Then relaunch Migration Assistant on your Imac and your PC, and follow the instructions in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796 starting with your IMac, or call AppleCare back.
Understand that if you have further issues, you'll need to help AppleCare help you by:
walking them through the steps you've taken in Migration Assistant
letting them guide you as they isolate the issue to either:
    The Imac's software
    The IMac's hardware
    The PC's software
    The PC's hardware
Firewall settings (maybe - especially if 3rd party firewalls are installed)
    The wifi connection, if used
    The ethernet connection, if used
I think the issue is likely what I guessed, or it's a software issue.
To learn more about your new Mac, I recommend this link: http://www.apple.com/support/imac/intel/
    And this book: http://www.amazon.com/books/dp/0789749890
I am a technical support professional who troubleshoots Macs all day long.  I do this for a living.  The book above is the most accurate, and easy to understand book I've seen with respect to using Mountain Lion and its various applications.  It's for a MacBook but the focus is on the software which is why I recommend it.
Don't feel like you have to rush to upgrade to OS X Mavericks.  In fact, you should always confirm both all the hardware and software you use is compatible with any new operating system before you upgrade.  And ask yourself: "why do I need it now?"  Because it's new is not a good answer.
In the future, specifying any troubleshooting others have done will help those on these boards help you.  Also, don't let a specific issue lead you to assume you've made an all-encompassing mistake.  It's just one issue, and it's resolvable.
And everyone else: giving a dozen recommendations for reading will only leave the petitioner bewildered.  Start with three.  And try responding with a hypothesis as to what's causing the primary problem!

  • I Have  "New" MBP (Mid 2009) and Would Like to Use Airport Extreme

This might be a very basic question , but I do not know the answer so I came to some experts for help. I have a "new" MBP OS 10.6.4 SL. I received it about 1 month ago after the genius bar could not fix a 3 year-old MBP. At one time the Airport Extreme was hooked up when I first got the 3-year-old MBP, but I kept running into troubles with it so I purchased a Verizon MiFi2200.
I have this new MBP, I still have the MiFi2200 from Verizon which I access via Airport. I would like to try the 3 year-old Airport Extreme again, but I am wondering if having the Verizon MiFi2200 will allow me to also have the Airport Extreme. Also, I am wondering if this Airport Extreme is too old for what is currently available (and if it is secure enough). I would need to get help from Applecare. I tried once, when I first started having trouble with it, and it was way beyond my ability. I think I made things worse and I hope I did not do any hardware damage. I tried to set it up, after having it disconnected for about 2 years, and I did not call applecare.
So I am wondering if I can have the MiFi2200 installed by VZAccessManager (but turned off when I use the Airport Extreme) and the 3 year-old Airport Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi Base Station set-up at the same time. Also, is this model still OK to use (I really have no idea how long something like this Airport Extreme is good to use), and if I can use it, are there online instructions to set it up or would it be best to get Applecare's help. I would also like to know how I could find out if there have been any firmware updates or other updates for this Airport Extreme since it was last used (about 2 years ago)
thanks in advance and I apologize if my terminology is not correct or too amateurish.

OK, I am not following you exactly and I guess it is important to know what the existing set-up is like. Maybe you will understand my amateurish language. Before I moved in to this condo, the manager of the complex asked me if I need to use the ethernet ports in the rooms or will I be setting up a wireless connection. I said, for now I will be using the ethernet ports in the rooms of the condo. She said Ok, I will be up to your condo to put in a modem. (She could have said router or modem, I am not sure if there is a difference, but I do know the Airport Extreme is considered a router.) She opened this box that is on the wall while she said this is where the "T1" line comes into your condo, and T1 (I think I have the right term she used) is the fastest way to get around the internet. In the box in the wall is an electrical outlet (which the tiny blue modem (I will call this a modem because I am not sure what it is) is plugged into. In the back of the tiny blue modem are 5 ethernet ports and that is all, except for the power cord which connects to the side of the tiny blue modem. In the box, already screwed into place is a CAT5 ethernet strip, for lack of a better term that has 12 ethernet ports but only 4 are actually marked. I think the four that are marked are the ones that can be used, if I needed this many, but I am only using 3 and the ethernet cable goes from one of the ethernet ports on this CAT5 strip which is connected to the T1 line, and one of the 3 ethernet cables goes from the back of the tiny blue modem to one of the ethernet ports on this CAT5 strip (one that is marked as previously described) So I can hook up to the internet by using one of the 3 ethernet plugs in the various rooms of the condo or I can use the MiFi2200 from Verizon for a wireless connection. I have already told you why I prefer not to use the Verizon MiFi2200 and why I would like to set-up my Airport Extreme.
As far as wanting to use the existing ethernet ports in the 3 rooms, I do not care about that unless the Airport Extreme does not work. The manager who initially hooked up the tiny blue modem said if I want a wireless connection I do not need the tiny blue modem. If I do want to use the ethernet ports in the rooms via an ethernet cable, I need the tiny blue modem. If this is tru or if I can have one and not the other, I really did not get a sense I could or could not have both a wireless and ethernet connections at the same time.
Why would I want to plug the 3 or 4 ethernet cables that go from the tiny blue modem to the ethernet strip? The ethernet strip has about 10 ethernet ports, 3 of which are marked and I assume only those 3 can be used since there are only 3 actual ethernet ports in the walls in various room for connection.
I know this is a different set-up but when I used the Airport Extreme before, I had a cable come in to my house from Comcast which was hooked up to a modem. One ethernet cable went from the modem to the back of the Airport Extreme which after Applecare helped me set up the Airport Extreme the whole house was wireless.
In this condo, which is smaller than the house I had, why do I need all 3 ethernet cables to go from the CAT5 strip to the back of the Airport Extreme? Again, on the 12 port CAT5 strip, only 3 are labeled with some code, and those 3 go out to the wall ethernet ports.
Are you getting ready to give up on me?

  • Duplicates seen only on iPad's iPod but NOT on syncing windows XP laptop...

Okay, first I hope all are well! My problem has been sent to Applecare - this has happened to me three times. Only once did Applecare help solve this. I cannot remember the procedure that this wonderful tech walked me through but I know it did not involve the Restore option.
To clarify the problem: I cannot use the normal find duplicates procedure, for the dupe only can be seen on the iiPad's iPod screen - that screen in which you touch the screen for your music selection. My iTunes on my windows xp laptop does not display the duplicate nor does it allow me to select the Find Duplicate button!
The laptop only displays that song and not it's dupe.
My solution was to delete the tunes involved from my laptop and resync! Of course I lost the songs and had the choice to repurchase the lost tunes! It is not really a problem now, for it only involves one tune but have been hit with 8 duplicates earlier in my iPad's history.
Again, thank you for your time and help!

Okay, I am going to answer my own question...Apple Care Support are made up of GREAT people!! It is 4am here in Hawaii and though the site was having problems all my retry(s) were answered by Apple techs!!! I was contacted and talked to by 3 different reps!!! Each one was professional and very cordial! I felt bad imposing on them.
What happened was that I did not really sync up my iPad from day one. Somehow my purchases were not being downloaded properly resulting in the above. I was initially thought that I would have to do a intense Restore but was walked through a procedure checking that my XP laptop was Authorized, etc. In short it is worthwhile to have Applecare!!!
I was saving for a "souped up" Lenovo W series laptop but will go with Apple product! These people made my day. I might get only 3 hrs of sleep but it is nothing compared to the peace of mind they bought me!! THANK YOU APPLE! Jobs, these people make up for any shortcomings the hardware have!
    Goodnight/morning to all!

  • I keep losing internet on my imac

I keep losing internet on my imac.  i have to "restart" or play around in "system preferences/networks" to reconnect.  All iphones, laptops and ipads do not have issues with the wireless connection.

    it's called _*wireless interference*_.
best you can do is to change the channel(s) your wireless router is broadcasting on.
    Can AppleCare help me
    nope.

  • How to tell if SMC firmware is installed properly...

    Hi
I live a bit far from my Apple Store so I thought I'd ask on the forum before I did the whole Genius Bar - back- and - forth trip.
I recently had my logic board replaced along with a rattling fan.
After which i found my MBP (2.16 core duo from last july) to run much quieter and cooler. I noticed that my fans came on more often and heard them come on.
Everything seemed fine. Then I had my bottom casing replaced (because of a scratch I found after having my logic board replaced -- which i wasn't too happy about but AppleCare helped me out).
After picking up my MBP again. It seems like the fans dont come on as often anymore and the temperatures are as high as it was before i got my logic board replaced--but i don't hear a noise.
Would anyone know if there is a way to check if the SMC firmware update is properly installed? I am wondering why the fans dont come on as often . I've been using SMC fan control lately which helps but I would rather my MBP control its own temperature without me having to adjust the fan speeds. It woudl be most helpful when running programs in Windows XP bootcamp mode.
Any advice would be great thanks.
    Love O.

If it helps to know the fan speed, you might try Hardware monitor: http://www.bresink.de/osx/HardwareMonitor.html
The fans could be running at low speeds, in which case it's very soft. To really hear it, you can add load, say by opening a terminal and running
    yes > /dev/null
That should use up CPU, raise temperature, increase fan speed and you should be able to hear it. If the max temperature is much higher than before or the fans really don't get switched on, then I would talk to Apple.

  • Bluetooth keyboard works OK, but keyboard startup codes are gone?

I replaced my corded keyboard a couple months ago with a wireless model. I have two HDs and a separate startup partition on one for doing disk utility tasks, but now, with the wireless keyboard, it is impossible to do a Startup-Option to bring up the startup-disk options, nor can I do a Cmd-Opt-P-R to zap the PRAM, nor can I Cmd-Shift to do a Safe Boot. All are impossible with my shiny new wireless keyboard. Even after I downloaded and installed the Bluetooth Firmware Update to take care of this very problem. Anybody got any suggestions?
    PM G5 PPC   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.5 GB RAM; 150GB & 250GB HDs

I got the word on this problem from an Applecare helper-That's The Way Things Are. The Blutooth handshake doesn't happen until well into the startup sequence. In order to use the boot-up codes I will need to connect a USB keyboard to the G5 before restart. Great. I had hoped that I was past that.

  • Archive Process Freezes

I am trying to get data off my TC.
I connected an external USB drive with enough storage to the TC and started the archive process. It has frozen the past 3 times I have done this midway through the process.
I formatted the drive on my Mac Pro and did it again and it is still not working.
    Any ideas?

Alright, it's getting narrowed down. After having AppleCare help me out (various testing and they sent me a new TC) it was still hanging. I successfully copied the now 700GB sparsebundle to the USB via the Finder, but that took 36 hours. I took the TC into the Apple Store and the Genius asked if I had tried the Archive from a different Mac. I hadn't, because I figured that the Archive process was between the TC and USB drive. So, I tried it from my G4 Quicksilver and it worked fine. I was even able to put the G4 to sleep and the Archive kept going, reactivating the TC when it was finished, just like it was supposed to.
    Hmmm.
I just upgraded the MacPro from 10.6.0 to .2 and I'll try it again from there.

  • Only .mov files will open

My iMac hung up today and AppleCare helped me clear out all the caches, reset parameter ram, emptied all the cache files with Secure Empty Trash, etc. Computer now is working great but I find that I can only open movie files with the Quicktime Player. That seems to open all the movie formats that I've tried - .avi, .wmv, .mp4, .mov, etc. But none of my other movie players will open any of my movie files. I have Movist, VLC, Flip Player etc.  They used to work with most of the move formats I have. Any ideas why they no longer work?
    Thanks

This is strange, but a day later the other movie players now work.

  • Where can I find the iweb project?

I know it's supposes to be in Library/Application Support/iWeb, but I can't find the "/iweb" folder on my computer -- it's not in my user Library directory, and not in my hd Library directory (goes right from iLifeSlideshow to Microsoft in both).
I just want to save one version of the site I'm making and then modify the site, and I know I did this in '08 -- but I can't find the file to move it to another folder.
    Dense, I'm sure.

As I said, dense. Applecare helped me find it. I had moved it long ago, and was searching for it in spotlight instead of in finder!

  • Hard drive error - Corrupt files - Archive and Install?

    Hi
I have been using Onyx for a while and last week it asked me to reinstall the Snow Leopard disc.  I verified this in Disk Utility first and that also advised I had corrupt files.  I installed the disc and all seemed fine when i checked again in Disk Utility.  But now a week later I have the same problem and not sure whether it is a problem with 0SX or my hard drive.  My mac pro is still under Applecare and they advised tonight that I should do another archive and install and if does not fix then to take the machine into my local Apple store.
Red part of Error message is - Invalid volume file count - it should be 362310 instead of 362313 and Invalid volume directory count - it should be 99776 instead of 99773.
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.  - Error: This disk needs to be repaired etc.
Has anyone else experienced the same problem.  I use Aperture 3 & Final Cut Express and until recently had problems getting the two to work together until Applecare helped.
    Many thanks
    Matt

Other people have certainly experienced a corrupt HFS volume header, which is what you have, or did have. It should be a very rare occurrence. If it happens frequently, then your drive is probably failing and should be replaced.

  • Keyboard unresponsive on specific actions only in MS Word and Endnote

    Hi All,
I have a weird keyboard issue. Sometimes (though not always), when I use my mouse to click on a field in MS Word or Endnote, once I have selected the field, I will be unable to type in it. If I click off the application and then reselect the field with my mouse, I can then type in it. It's annoying rather than catastrophic but Applecare help was unable to help, only suggesting that I use the computer's own keyboard (not going to happen--I'm hooked up to a monitor) or disconnecting other peripherals, which again is not possible. The mouse is downstream from the keyboard and has no problems at all.
I am using a white Apple keyboard and a Logitech mouse to connect to a powered USB hub. My system is in my .sig. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
I am using older versions of Word (last update of 2004) and Endnote (last update of 9) but will have to do so for another couple weeks (until I finish my current writing project).

Thanks, I've posted at a few places and will try there as well.
But this is not a problem I have seen people post about strictly in regards to MS Word. I have seen them have it with other softwares too. In fact, [this person was having it with Apple's Pages software|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1758741]
So, I more consider this an OS glitch. But thanks for the link anyway.

  • IMessage & FaceTime "can't activate" Solution

I recently replaced my broken iPhone 5 with a new iPhone 5 under the 1 year warranty. This was great except after my new phone was setup, I was unable to activate iMessage and Facetime. I followed the troubleshooting steps on the Apple website and those I found on Google as well as went through the steps with 2 phone AppleCare techs, a Genius Bar employee and an AppleCare online chat. Finally, I figured out how to fix the problem.
    1. Plug you iPhone into your computer and open iTunes.*
    2. Backup your iPhone to iTunes.
    3. Click "Restore iPhone" at the top right of the screen next to "Check for Updates"
    4. Let this run. If you have an error such as "Unknown error " with a "(-1)", "(8)", or "(9)", unplug the phone and restart at step 1. (It took me 4 tries)
    5. Your phone will bring up some initial setup menus. You can gho through these or click "Restore from" and choose the backup you just performed on your iPhone.
    6. Let this run and your phone should be restored correctly with iMessage and Facetime working.
*My phone was in "Recovery Mode" which can be done by turning your phone off by holding the power button, and after it is off, hold the home button down and plug your phone into your laptop and continue holding down the home button until an iTunes logo and cord are shown on your phone. WARNING: If your phone doesn't successfully complete the restore then it isn't easy to get it out of recovery mode, so use caution. I recommend trying without recovery mode first.
I am not sure this will work for everyone but I believe my problem was unplugging my iPhone before the original syncing/restoring of my new phone was complete. I was asked to restore my phone while using AppleCare help and I didn't have the same results which is odd. My advice is to be patient and backup your phone. When your phone and computer are backed-up, generally speaking you should always be able to get your data back on your phone. I hope this was helpful.

What I would do is set the phone up as new and see if it can activate then. If that works then restore the iPhone again and restore your back up on the phone and see if that works.
If these fail then I would say go to expresslane.apple.com and choose the iMessage section and have an Apple representative call you and see if they can help you with the issue that you are having. Hope this helps you both.
