AppleCare Support alternatives

Anyone have suggestions on how to go beyond AppleCare support for a solution. MacBook has been sent to Apple 3 times. Each time they replace HD install OSX. It returns and works for about a day and then apps start falling off and eventually the OS won't boot. Hired a technician (4.5 hours) who erased HD (zero data) and tried to install OSX from original disk, then tried Tiger install, then Leopard install. All got through about 1/3 of the install process and than failed. No working MacBook since Sept 28. Been the "product specialist" route, spent hours on the phone. All they will only do is attempt repairs on a computer that has been labled defective. What is the next step to getting a computer that works? How do I get out of this mess? Anyone know some other means of getting Apple's best to solve this porblem. One AppleCare techie said that the computer must have been sitting too close to a fan, magnet or TV none of which are in the area exceppt for the magnet that keeps the power plug attached. Silly guessing on his part. Help!

Apple Customer Relations can't help.
She sent me back to tech support and said to ask for a manager which is what we've been doing since September! Strange, no one at Apple can solve this problem and they won't replace the lemon!
I wonder how Steve Jobs (if he was just a regular old user) would handle not being able to use his computer for 47 days why he waits for dozens of people to decide if they can or will fix it.
just venting . . .

2 summers ago, I was live-in caregiver for my Dad & Mom. I am watchin TV in the back room and before I know what's happening, my poor folks had given some gypsies $100 cash to 'clean' the outside  of their gutters! The hook those f****** used was elegantly simple. They had gone into HomeDepot, grabbed a handful of Behr Product brochures and were saying they were using this stuff to clean with at $60/gallon! Turns out the product was really $6 (SIX) /gallon!! They were just about to get a check for $600 from my Mom (had it written about to sign and hand it over) when I wandered out to the front and saw the commotion. I immediately put a stop to it. Papa Gypsy started to get in my face & fight before his kinsmen grabbed him and dragged him off as I was calling 911.
Moral... trust NO-ONE - in any form of media - no matter how slick the deal looks. My poor OLD folks still  don't realize what happened. They think *I* was the a******!
All your scammer had to do was parrot Applese, design with alot of white space, put real looking footers and such. The tell to me for sure was "Call Apple" with NO NUMBER (I didn't think you intentionally edited that out)
Glad you posted and I was able to help. Maybe Apple will sick their goons on 'em I'd have goons if I was rich and powerful wouldn't you?

  • International AppleCare Support

Hello everyone, I am in serious need of advice/support (and not trying to denigrate apple in any way, so please do not censor my post). I am currently traveling in Cambodia for an extended period of time, in need of computer repair and have no means of directly reaching anyone from apple because there is no callback service to my location, even though I am a paying applecare subscriber. If anyone can help or provide suggestions, I would sincerely appreciate it!
Anyway, this is my story and I will *try* to keep it short, even though it' not an easy task . Basically, This is my 4th macbook, I've always been happy in the past and have found your computers reliable and worth the extra price, so you could say that I was a hardcore apple fan. Unfortunately, I now believe that the computer purchase I have purchased is a lemon. So if you'll bear with me for a couple of minutes, this is my sad computer's story which I post on the apple community, not knowing where else to post it and as I believe it contains important information for other travellers such as myself:
    - I travel a lot, and tend to buy new computers with each travel as they get lighter. I am usually happy with them, so applecare seemed like a good and logical idea despite the price.
    - Very early on, the USB port broke on the new computer, but the logic board was replaced quickly and at no charge.OK, it happens!
    - A weeks later, the delete key was not working properly, so the logic board was replaced again (???) and keyboard as well. This repair took longer and I had to borrow a friend's computer, but OK, I was confident it would not happen again.
    - I then travelled for a month and the cruellest things possible happened: my hard drive died, making it impossible to finish some of the work I was doing. Luckily, I had backed up most of my data, but still lost a lot of information, work and time. Back home, the apples store replaced the drive after a couple of days, so I was pretty much back to square one. My enthusiasm had gone down, but I was still confident that this was the right computer for me and willing to take it with me to Asia. I figured I had been through enough bad luck anyway!
    - So that's the background which occurred in the few months before I started to traveland I now come the current traveling. During my flight from China to Phnom Pehn, the screen on my computer cracked after going an airport security check. I am not 100% sure what happened as I was going through the screening process, and I am the first to admit that it is hard to blame apple for a screen that mysteriously broke, but still it seems extremely odd (and even dangerous)  that a screen would break (about 80% of the surface is cracked) even if a bag was placed over the laptop and even if it contained bricks.. I also know from looking at the x-raymachine to check on the computer that it was NOT dropped. Some pressure does seem to have been applied to it though, but I till find it hard to believe that this would have cracked the screen. Anyway, I am not a professional so I will stop making theories, but how does one prove any such thing when no one is there to help or answer questions?
I should mention that I am aways super careful, carry the computer it in a separate case and never cram in between a bunch of stuff. Anyway, without trying to be a bore, this is not my first plane ride but this is my first serious screen problem issue which leads me to believe that the screen was previously flawed.
    - Once I finally got to Asia, I was naturally shocked to see the problem and wanted to address the issue. Apparently however, Cambodia is not listed in the applecare page so there is no direct way to contact anyone from Apple here, something I was not told at time of purchase. After online searches, I discovered some far away obscure shops ran by uncaring people in areas you kind of have to find yourself without knowing if Apple will void your warranty or not. Not sure what to do, I decided to go to one of those 'authorized' addresses which I found on line (and spent one ENTIRE day looking for a shop). I got there, was told it was the wrong shop and to go further down the same street. Ok. Go further, find store with same name and am told the exact same think by giggling employees. I smile and try to remain calm, it is Cambodia afer all, different rules,
Finally reach third store, guy opens computer up (without powering it on to see of it works or not--it does), says 'not our problem since glass is broken and not covered by apple'. Then adding, "Deal with apple if not happy. They will give you a service number and we can fix for free. Well, this pretty much summed up our conversations . Basically, this was a repair store where talking was not a possibility, regardless of the problem.
For anyone who has been to Phnom Pehn, I should mention that this occurred after several hours of online searches, motorbike bargaining/driving/praying getting lost and lots of honking. Once again, this is not apple store, but I'm merely pointing out the difference between finding mysterious places with no support and going into an aircon applestore. I then asked the pleasant man at the store how much it would cost f I paid out of pocket for the fix as I need my computer for work and can not spend weeks trying to resolve this issues. He said 570$ if I wanted to kept the broken screen glass (!!!) and about 400$ if I did not. These numbers seemed to be estimates and simply pop out of his head and I am still trying to figure that one out. Does apple reuse glass parts when fixing computer? What exactly does one do with over 100$ of broken glass? Please excuse de digression.
    - trying not to despair, I later literally spent hours trying to deal with apple care, but their site offers no direct email, chat possibility or ayway to return calls to Cambodia.Very frustrating and extremely time-consuming.
    -  As a last resort, I finallly decided to just throw money out the window and run and call Canada service directly which I should have done in the first place (this is where I bought the computer originally). I was transferred to several places, and ended up talking with super friendly guy named Andrew who gave me another possble Cambodian address where it may be possible to address the issue. It was also hard to find and we got lost several times, but eventually found it.
Unfortunately, the place turned out to be worse than the original one and the guy did not want to bother looking at the problem or any possible cause. Basically, unlike in an apple store, Cambodian employees can say whatever they want when its time to sell a product, but if it breaks down or if you need support, tough luck! The most incredible part though was that when I mentioned that the caps lock key did not light up and that the mousepad was not responding as well as before, iso could he please examine those parts, he added once more that this was not his problem and that I should call apple for a repair number!!! So basically, if I understand correctly, Apple (and AppleCare) will not fix either the top part of a computer screen (glass and screen) NOR the keyboard which is a one piece unit. This leads me to the purpose of the overly long message which is: WHAT EXACTLY IS APPLE CARE FOR? It is just for talking to people on the phone or do the actually do anything?
As a last alternative, I tried calling Andrew from Canada for advice again, but did not get a call back (in fairness, Andrew had informed me that they are not allowed to make international calls and that all his calls for directly to voice mail, so how does one handle such a situation? I cannot reach him and he will not call me).
What do I do? Who do I call? How do I not void the warranty? Should I just demand an applecare refund and toss the computer I have?
    Thanks for any help/suggestions
    Damien
P.S. I have also experienced several other minor problems, but will stick to the major issues for now.

    Hey there
im afraid i dont know about the second two questions
but concerning the country of residence:
they urge you to buy the plan from your country of residence as they say that by doing this you can get the full experience of the plan, (meaning there will be things you cannot do with the plan if you buy it from a different country) however you can if you want buy it from any country you like and youll be able to cover the computer...after all is does include global coverage. To be honest i would recommend you just buy it in your country of residence, i think youll find this will make things much easier if there may be anything wrong with the computer in the future...
    Hope this helps,

  • AppleCare support - how many times will you lose my registration?

Called on 6/29/06 to register my almost out of warranty iPod. Waited forever to talk to a very nice person who took my case and told me what to do: fax my iPod SN, and provided a case#.
I call today to register my AppleCare warranty and am told that I need to repeat the above steps again, and call back in 5-10 business days.
This person (Shelly?) was rude, abrupt and condencending.
How many times do I have to prove that I own an iPod, get it registered so I can get it repaired?
AppleCare is the worst experience I've ever had. What did I pay for. I've never experienced such a run-around to get support.
BTW - your phone queue is about 20 years old. Could you at least tell someone HOW LONG they are going to wait? And/or eliminate the 'You call is important and will be answered in the order received' notice that comes on every minute?

  • Exchange Online transport agent support / alternative implementation?

    Hi,
We have a custom transport agent that our clients use with exchange 2010, however a number of potential clients are now using exchange online.  I've read that this doesn't support transport agents, so I was wondering whether it would ever have support
    for them?
If not, is there an alternative way of capturing and working with emails from all platforms (desktop/mobile/web) before they are sent from the exchange?  Our solution also uses a SQL database to temporarily store some of these emails, as well as an
admin account to auto-correspond with the sender, so we would need some way of implementing something similar to this as well.
    Many thanks,
    Tom

    Hi,
For exchange cutover migration, you need a public SSL certificate and a internet routeable domain. After getting up public SSL, did you assign any service to the certificate? Make sure that your autodiscover is working fine as O365 tries to connect your
Exchange using autodiscover. You can test your outlook anywhere and autodiscover settings from testconnectivity.microsoft.com and yes Microsoft don't have any issue with .local entry in 3rd party certificate. Hope this answers your question. Thanks.

  • I can"t open the apple hardware test from the applecare support website

i received the applecare training program for my birthday and while exploring the applecare service source website i found a image file of the apple hardware test (AHT) for each model along with a pdf of the service manual and a pdf of the AHT service codes. The problem i'm having is, i cant open the image of the AHT.

After downloading that image, open it and it will show up mounted in your desktop. Then, open Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities), right-click your Apple Hardware Test image in the sidebar and burn it to a DVD. Finally, start your computer from the disc, holding the C key, so Apple Hardware Test should start, always that you have the correct version for your computer.
You have Apple Hardware Test in the Applications disc that came with the computer. In that case, hold the D key while your computer is starting

  • Canon G9 not supported - Alternative

The topic of no RAW support for Canon G9 (CR2) that I posted yesterday was removed this afternoon. I did look into competitive products and they only recently posted upgrades to support Canon G9.
Lightroom v1.3 supporting G9 was launched approx. December 12. G9 Raw files worked with 1.2 but was not supported until 1.3. Upgrading to v1.3 messed up the RAW files processed under 1.2.
Bibble began support of G9 around December 17 This is not an option as for some reason Raw file for my older Olympus camera are no longer supported.
To be fair it appears most programs only began to support G9 within the last few weeks. I am leaning towards sticking with Aperture with the exceptions support for G9 should be in the next 4 weeks. In the mean time I can use the Canon Raw Processor that came with the camera and transfer files to Aperture.

Volker, do yourself a favor, stick with the Powerbook and Aperture. Apple's inexcusable delay in supporting the new format is no reason to cross over to the dark side. It is true Aperture does not yet support the G9, and I also find that very disappointing on the part of Apple. Many of the other apps do in fact support the G9-CR2 format.
I will briefly give you my experience. The G9 files are easily seen by Bridge CS3, and easily converted to .dng files by Adobe Camera Raw. But even those dng's are not seen by Aperture as they are based on the unsupported G9 RAW file type. The only easy way I have found to get them in Aperture is to use the Canon software "Raw Image Task" and save the files as tiffs. This was pretty speedy on my MacPro, and the files were promptly read by Aperture.

  • Someone stole my iPod touch and then called AppleCare support for it

I got an email to my account saying that I recently called AppleCare, but I never did. I remember that I got my iPod stolen at school so is there any way I could get the name of the person that called AppleCare? I do have the "case id number" for the call.

I don't know about finding out who called, but I would make sure you let Apple know in case they tried to call and get the password to you iTunes account reset so they could use it to purchase a bunch of music and apps with your credit card on file or other payment method.

  • What information do i need to transfer applecare support

I am looking to buy a used Macbook pro and it still has applecare until 2014.
what information do I need from the seller to complete the change over?
    Thanks

Call Apple Spport 800-676-2775, they should help you or point you in the right direction

  • Do I have applecare support?

Just bought a used mac off of EBAY. Do I have phone support? The listing didn't say it did. I am having problems. Thanks

(above poster...) I'd hesitate to assume that the device does not have apple care even though the buyer was told so simply because it was purchased from eBay...
Boot up your mac, go to the apple icon in the upper left, About this Mac, click on the little version number and you can toggle other information including the serial number of your device.
Enter the serial number to the field provided by the site above, and there's your answer.

  • Applecare / Support question

I am thinking about buying a Macbook Pro in the USA (im from Canada) if I bring it over here, will I get support from Canadian Apple retailers/outlets if there is anything wrong with the hardware?
    thanks

Yes - Apple portables have world wide warranty unlike the desktops. But you might want to call Apple and make sure for your particular case it applies. I would be surprised if you hear otherwise though.

I have an ISP facing 3750 switch running BGP. I want to collect Netflow statistics for this IP traffic.
I know that Netflow is not supported on the 3750 switch.
I know Lancope offer a Flow sensor for capturing data on a span port and turning this into netflow stats.
    http://netflowninjas.typepad.com/blog/2009/12/stealthwatch-510-highlight-flowsensor-ae-features-and-benefits.html
I need a temporary solution and I have a spare 3745 router which supports netflow. I cant put this router
in series because it may be a bottleneck on a 20Mbps ISP connection.
Is there a way of feeding span traffic from the 3750 into a 3745 and seeing if it is able to generate the netflow stats.
I have tried this using only one interface and it does not work. Do I need to span both internal and external interfaces.
Does the IP traffic arriving at the 3745 have to cross two interfaces to generate neflow stats.
    http://www.netflowanalysis.com/How%20does%20NetFlow%20Work.html
    Any ideas ?

    Hello,
    there are only 3 solutions.
    1. Small router inline. I suppose that it will OK for 20Mbps line.
    2. Use SPAN and some probe (software or hardware based).
    3. Optical TAP and probe.
Our company is offering software or hardware based probes.
    (see http://www.caligare.com/product/flowmon/ for more information)
You can also use the Lancope or nProbe (free) of course.

  • HT4009 refund for subcription charged by auto renew during applecare product support case for my authorized devices

My Adobe Revel Premium was auto renewed it's annual fee on April 10th and I was having an Applecare supporting period for reinstalling my Macbook pro and home networking setup for my time capsule. I only noticed the charged when the 50$ apple store gift card redeemed by the new update feature using camera for my MBP a couple days before my call-in support has gone plus an extra charge to my Paypal since i spent a few dollars for others apps from the redeem credits. I was calling the phone numbers for the apple store which was showed in my bank statement for all itunes items purchases. The number indicated Los Angeles but there was a auto machine which send me back to use the online support forms. Also, I was confusing and exhausting to read and continue searching to read one topic after another from both Apple and AdobeRevel website to seek for the right service support for my case, yet I was just going in a circle. So, I did turn off the auto subscription for Adobe revel in the apple store setting, however it never shown in new purchases history for that new subscription charges and the specific App. There were 3 new items purchases in app store account shown in my MBP after I reinstall new 10.8.3 and new updates as instructed from Apple Care and Genius bar personnel from my local authorized Apple Store and 1 item remained hidden still after all after I was able to retrieve the others 2 items. Obviously it was for the Revel premium but I can only guess after the credits was deducted from my app store MBP account and the subscription was made after i updated my Ipad 3 to newest version iOS6.1.3, I did not have sufficient times to prevent or acknowledge the potential charge until it was already taken place, and lost in transition for finding a authentic service authority for supporting refund or reimburse related to my issue. Could anyone be able to advise me in such issue I'm having currently? It's really appreciated for your helps! Thanks

  • MBP freezes after 10.4.11 and I can't get through to AppleCare

This is beyond ridiculous. Since applying the 10.4.11 update, my MBP always locks up after waking from sleep. There has been no exception since updating. I kept it turned off for about 24 hours, then used it all afternoon without letting it sleep and didn't have a single freeze. Sure enough, the first time I closed the lid to let it sleep, it locked up within seconds of waking up. This was happening spradically prior to the 10.4.11 update, but now it's rendering my MBP unuseable.
Yes, I have AppleCare and I tried calling Apple twice last week. Both times, I got cut off. Both times, I could barely understand the Indian trying to help me, and one got snippy with me when I had to keep asking him to repeat himself. Neither time did I actually get to speak with a technician. One of those times I got a recorded message telling me that Apple was closed for the holiday and to call back during normal business hours. Friday wasn't a holiday (at least not in this country) and I was calling during normal business hours for THIS country, but perhaps not for India. I've never experienced any trouble getting AppleCare support via telephone in the past, even on Sundays.
I've run Apple Hardware Test and TechTool Deluxe, neither of which reports any drive problems. The nearest Apple Store is an hour's drive from here. Apparently, I have one of the Seagate drives recently found to be defective. All I want to know is whether or not I should let Apple replace the drive with one that isn't defective.
I'm at a loss here. I'm paying for AppleCare, but can't get through to a comprehensible English speaker capable of answering that very simple question. I can't let my MBP sleep because it'll lock up upon waking. I can't find any way to send feedback to Apple about the unacceptable experience trying to get through to support last week. Is no one accountable for anything these days? And to think I bought an iPhone last week too!

Here is what I think may be the relevant portion of my system.log file. I've had no luck at all finding someone willing to tell me how to parse log files to troubleshoot errors. The freeze happened right about Nov 25 22:00:00. Note the times at the beginning of each line.
