AppleID, MobileMe, iCloud, iTunes mess

Can apple fix the appleID mess it's created?
I suspect almost everyone has this problem.
iTunes was created first.  When you set up a new iTunes account, it creates an appleid using the email address provided.  So far, so good.
Then came MobileMe.  Create a new MobileMe account and a new appleid was created.  You had to use the MobileMe provided [email protected] email address.  This was the default so you couldn't use the same email that you used when creating your iTunes account.  Now you have two appleid's and two different emails, one for each appleid.
Now comes iCloud.  Fortunately, Apple seems to have migrated from MobileMe to iCould without creating yet another appleid.  That's an improvement.  Now, everyone has two appleids, but at least it's not three.
Heres the problem.  When you try to set up iMessage on your iPhone, iPad or iPod you are most likely going to have a problem.
An email adddress can only be associated with one appleid.  It's a hard one-to-one relationship in the apple database.  Should I use my itunes appleid or my icloud appleid?  What's a person to do?  Ah, the humanity!
If you have associated any email addresses with either of your appleids, then there are going to be more conflicts and you won't have visibility to them.
Here's and example.
Assume iTunes account uses email #1, most likely NOT @me.com because me.com didn't exist when you set up iTunes.
Assume iCloud account uses email #2, most likely an @me.com because that was required with MobileMe.
Assume you have a personal or work address, email #3 let's call it @yahoo.com.  This could also be a work domain, @yahoo.com email or @gmail.com email.
Assume you assigned email #3 to one of your appleid's as an alternative email address.  You probably did this because it's obvious on the applieid form and it's a good idea to have an alternative email for accounts like iTunes, MobileMe and iTunes because they ding your credit card.
Let's say you want your friends to iMessage you at [email protected].  You want this because you want your friends to reach you at email address #3.  You also don't want to give out an email address that is associated with a paid, credit card account, like iTunes and iCloud. So, you login to iMessage with appleid #1.  Then you add email #3, your personal email that you share with your friends.  You want your friends to use your personal, email #3.
iMessage barks, "You can't use this email because it's already being used."
It would be nice if iMessage would tell you a like more.  Like, which appleid is in play.  Or what you need to do to resolve this.  Or where you need to go.  Sadly, this is not the case.  iMessage would have been equally as helpful by saying, "You're an idiot.  You're not smart enough to use iMessage."
Of course, no one logs into appleid.apple.com regularly.  I completely forgot that appleid.apple.com exists. The UI's for customers are iTunes, MobileMe and now iCloud.
To resolve this, you need to do the following.
1. Remember that appleid.apple.com is the place to go to manage applieid.  I don't have space in my brain for this since I never use it and these accounts are actually created on iTunes, MobileMe and iCould, not on appleid.apple.com.
2. Login into both applieid accounts and look at the emails associated with each.
3. Think about how you want to fix this.
4. Think about which applieid you want to use for iMessage, your iTunes one or your iCloud one.
5. Wonder about the implications of #4.  If I use iCloud for iMessage, can I still buy things in iTunes with my other apple id?  If I use iTunes, will my iMessages get to me?  Does iMessage need the iCloud apple id?  How the heck did I get two appleid's anyway?
6. Develop a plan for moving your email addresses around between both appleid's to resolve any conflicts with iMessage.  You must consider which email you want to give to friends and which you want to keep "secret" for security reasons.
7. Make the changes by removed emails, adding emails, re-verifiying emails, etc.
8. Make changes to iMessage, on every device.  For me, this is four devices - iphone 3gs, iphone 4, ipad 1, ipad 2.
9. Test and hopefully it works now.
In my case, I figured it out and got everything working after a few failures.
I'm not the smartest guy in the world, but I am a tech entrepreneur and I'm a long time user of all apple products.  This mess stumped me for a while.  I can't imagine new apple users my wife or my parents have a chance in **** in figuring this out on their own.
How many calls are coming into Apple Care about this issue?
"iMessage doesn't work!"
"iMessage rejected me!"
"iMessage hates my email address!"
"iMessage is forcing me to give out my secure iTunes email to all my friends!"
Hey Apple, I recommend you take a hard look at the appleID message process as it relates to id and email address management.
Create a universal appleid for God's sake.  It will be painful to merge, but much more painful if you don't.  It will be devastating if you continue creating new appleid's for every new product.  Users will run out of email addresses and they will lose their minds trying to connect all your great products that they can't use.
If Steve was still here, someone would be fired.  You can do better than this.
My 2 cents.

Yes, it's 2014 and my Apple ID situation is beyond ridiculous. I have a computer science degree and this has had me stuck for months. THe best I've come up with is a seriously snafu'ed workaround that doesn't always work.
Just got a new iPhone 5S (thank you, Apple, for dropping new 4S to only 8 mg so it's completely unusable) and all my apps won't update, my Apple Id - either the new or the old - are completely unrecognized anywhere. I've added, changed passwords, logged out, deauthorized until I'm blue in the face.
APPLE ARE YOU LISTENING????????????? THis is a complete CLUSTER and you should be ashamed of yourselves. No doubt, Steve is rolling over in his grave. You've completely lost sight of his amazing vision.
Just so you know, I've escalated this to the highest level of Apple support and guess what the guy told me - "I've never heard of this problem". Wth?
On top of all the Apple ID insanity, someone else used my email address and created an Apple ID with it. The tech guys never did figure out how to fix it and their sage advice? Abandon both the Apple ID and email address (which I've had since the year 2000)!!!!!! Seriously????
So let's recap - the Apple ID situation is completely unworkable and Apple software allows two people to create Apple ID's using the same email??? I've written code - this is simple. Are you listening, Apple???? CHECK FOR EXISTING EMAILS...
Well, folks... there you have it. A once great company going straight down the tubes. I'm finding ANYONE but Apple to get my devices from in the future.

  • Recieving and sending email from mobileme/iCloud is messed up

Not all of my email downloads to my Mail app on my iMac from my iCloud account. I know because I see emails on my iPad, iPhone and through browser access. Some make it, some don't. Mail hasn't received any emails from today except one from Apple. They aren't in the Junk folder. Sometimes an unrelated email will insert itself into a thread, or the sender and subject have nothing to do with the content. When sending emails, some make it, some just disappear and are never sent. Mail worked great until I upgraded to Mountain Lion. It's a big bother to reply from my iCloud account on my browser. Help!

To change the From name on and iOS device, go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars...tap iCloud under Accounts, tap your iCloud account at the top of the next screen, tap Mail at the bottom of the next screen, then enter the name you want to use in the Name field at the top.
To change the From name on a Mac (if you have one), go to icloud.com, sign into your account, open Mail, click the gear shaped icon on the bottom left and choose Preferences, go to the Accounts tab and enter the name you want to use in the Full Name field and click Done.  Then quit Mail on your Mac and re-open it.  Your new From name should now appear in the drop-down list when you compose a new email.

  • Mac, Me, iCloud and AppleIDs (i.e., total mess)

I have an old Mac.com email address. I upgraded to MobileMe but consistently used Mac.com (because I liked it better) and let it automatically switch to me.com in the background. I use that Mac email as my AppleID for everything (iTunes, iCloud, etc.), as well as my primary email address. I'm getting married and changing my name in a month. I would LOVE to keep my Mac.com (or at the least a me.com) email with an updated name as my AppleID instead of using my updated Gmail address. Since I already have iCloud set up with my old Mac.com email, I cannot see how to create a new me.com address with my new name (which I believe is now my only option if I want to change it). Is there any way to do this?
Long story short, am I wasting my time even trying a circuitous route? Would creating and applying a new me.com address as my AppleID foul up my iTunes account? Is it more hassle than it's worth? Should I keep the original Mac.com and simply create an alias?
It's so frustrating that Apple has not made this easy. I never thought this would be the hardest part of the name-change process.

Join the club! Same problem here.
There are a bunch of other threads on this in the icloud.com forum. The common theme seems to be everyone has an Apple ID that ends in @mac.com.

  • Unifying Clouds, MobileMe, and iTunes?

    Hello:
Can someone please help. I am lost in the CyberSpace if not lost in the clouds.
I had been using MobileMe and iTunes fine without any problems until Yesterday.
Recently I bought an iCloud account, in which I was given a different email address.
Today I bought a new iPad.
I tried to setup iCloud for backup and restore instead of using iTunes.
It wouldn't let me change my Apple ID or email address.
Is there some way I can merge everything into one unified account?
    Thanks in advance

Use your ex-MobileMe login for iCloud; use your iTunes ID for iTunes, iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match. There's no problem in having two IDs this way, and in fact it's more secure not to have your iTunes login the same as your email address (given the number of complaints about iTunes accounts getting hacked).
Once you've got it running Keychain will handle the logins anyway so you won't even need to remember which login is which.

  • Multiple Users one AppleID in iCloud

I have mutiple users on our PC with seperate itunes libraries and iphones but all using the same AppleID, when one of the users syncs with icloud contacts the contacts form the main user are brought over to that iphone, how do i differentiate between users on the same AppleID in iCloud?

Well, on a Mac you'd create multiple users and they'd have their own stuff. Maybe on a PC you can do the same?

  • I have 2 AppleIDs (1 from itunes

I have 2 AppleIDs - Original from itunes & now a 2nd one from migrating from Mobile me. Can I merge the 2? My purchases are on the original ID yet my email, contacts & calendar are on the new one. Setting up iMessage & Photo Streaming drove me crazy & now there is iTunes Matching. Trying to keep it straight as to which one I need to use is very frustrating.

I have the same problem. so I want to be clear before if use iTunes Match.  I began with ID #1 years ago with iTunes and puchasing music etc.  I recently aquired ID #2 (mobile me/ iCloud) that has all my contacts, documents, find my iPhone, ect assigned to it.
you are saying go ahead and use iTunes Matching and it will let me sign into each on my mac.  what about my iPhone, iPad etc?  It has worked fine thus far has my content has been on my computer, but now with Matching I want to make sure before i do this..
    thanks

  • HT204053 MobileMe/Icloud

I have an AppleId account but when I go to sign in/ set up Mobileme/ Icloud it says the account is wrong.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You have Mac OS X 10.6.8. MobileMe was discontinued, and iCloud needs OS X Lion or Mountain Lion. Make a backup, open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. Check if your programs are supported > http://www.roaringapps.com

  • Move contacts/ical from "mobileMe iCloud" to new iCloud

    Hope someone can help!
For years I had a mobileMe account and a different iTunes account -so 2 apple ID's.
Now I want to use my iTunes apple ID and have already made an icloud for this. I have also moved my MobileMe acount and therefor have to clouds.
Hov can I move my contacts and iCal from my old Mobileme (now iCloud) to my iCloud that I use for iTunes??
By other words; I only want ONE I cloud.
I really appreciate every helt I can get!
    Regard from Denmark/Natascha

    You have two options:
    1. You can manually copy the calendars and contacts to your new iCloud account by setting up your MobileMe iCloud account in Mail, Contacts, Calendars prefs on the mac. Then just copy the calendars in iCal or Address Book contacts to the other account.
    2. You can just sign in with both accounts. This seems like the best option. On your devices, just set up the first iCloud account as your iTunes account, and then set up ANOTHER iCloud account for the contacts and calendars. You are allowed to have multiple accounts signed in at once but you can only use one for purchases and photostream etc (which will be your iTunes account).
The merging of both accounts is not possible at the moment.

  • How can I get the iCloud/iTunes password for my (now) deceased Father-in-Law's Imac?  I have a list of his passwords, but nothing works!

How can I get the iCloud/iTunes password for my (now) deceased Father-in-Law's iMac?  I have a list of his passwords, but nothing works!  I know his email, but that account has been cancelled for security purposes, so we can't just request a new one.  I tried his security questions to no avail.
    Thanks

Since that password is tied to his Apple ID, you will need to contact Apple; as far as I know, it will be a somewhat lengthy procedure and you will  need to furnish necessary paperwork (including a death certificate as far as I know). Best to either stop at an Apple store or call them to find out exactly what it is you need to do.

  • Multiple devices for on iCloud/iTunes account

I have three devices under the same iCloud/iTunes account. I need to "inactivate" one of the devices. How do I do it without affecting the iCloud/iTunes account?

You could just delete your iCloud account from your device (Settings > iCloud) or erase the device via Find My iPhone. Futhrrmore you could also delete the device from iTunes account via iTunes on your computer (open iTunes then menu "Store > View account > iTunes in the Cloud > Manage devices)

  • How can I delete a song from iCloud / iTunes Match, but keep it on my Mac?

How can I delete a song from iCloud / iTunes Match, but keep it on my Mac?
I subscribed to iTunes Match a few weeks ago and my entire library was uploaded.  I do not want all of my library in the Cloud, especially given that there is a space/song limitation.  Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks!

Apologies Brandon, we have moved on somewhat from your original question.
What I have done is effectively used Michael's idea. I'll try to explain a little further.
You can run iTunes match on up to 5 computers, and you can edit the iCloud library on any of them. Michael's idea works on the basis that, whilst you can edit the iTunes library, you can't remove songs from other computers.
I have basically the same setup as you, but I also have a MacBook Air, which is running iTunes Match but without any music downloaded so it all streams.
I added the songs on my main library, which then added them to the cloud. When they appeared on my MacBook I deleted them straight away. As there was no local copy I was asked if I wanted to delete them from the cloud, and I said yes. When I went back to my main computer I found that, as expected, they were still there, but the iCloud status is "removed". They are therefore on my library but not in iCloud.
Since then I have run match updates a couple of times and there is no sign as yet that it will try to add them back to the cloud. It's too early to say that this is a definate answer to your problem, but it looks very hopeful.
Our other discussions have moved onto the 25,000 son limit, which I note from your comment you may also be interested in. Watch this space.
If you don't have access to a second computer to run the other library on then look back at Michael's post where he explains how to set it up on your main computer.
    Hope that clarifies a bit.

  • Change of functionality in deleting songs from iCloud/iTunes Match with the 11.0.2 version of iTunes?

I updated to iTunes 11.0.2 and this version brought a change of wording regarding deleting songs from iCloud/iTunes Match, and I'd like to know if there are any changes in functionality to match the change in wording:
With version 11.0.2, when I try to delete any song (uploaded, matched or purchased) I'm presented with a pop-up dialog box that asks me if I'm sure and also gives me a "Also hide this song from iCloud?" option.
In prior iTunes versions the pop-up dialog box would ask instead "Also delete this song from iCloud?".
Has the functionality changed? If so, what's the difference in functionality between 11.0.2 and previous versions? If the functionality of deleting songs has changed, how do I delete an uploaded song from both my local library and iCloud/iTunes Match?

I am having the same issue- pelase could anyone help? Mods?

  • HT5824 Can use you use the same icloud & itunes account with 2 different cell phone numbers?

Can I use the same icloud & itunes account with 2 different cell phones that have 2 different numbers?

Yes. Two iDevices can share the same iTunes Library as long as both are configured to use the same Apple ID.

  • Why can't Mac users, who have multiple devices, have device icons for drag and drop, on desktop rather than iCloud, iTunes, etc. ?

I want drag and drop in the form of icons on my iMac, from all my other Apple devices. I don't want to have to go through iCloud, iTunes and DropBox.

What are you other apple devices?
For an all Mac OS X set, you could write an applescript to perform the task.
