AppleID must be an email address?

Does an AppleID for use in Itunes and other areas need to be an email address?
I want to change my appleID to a recently created me.com email address but am running into a problem doing that in iTunes.
Then thought about simply changing my current AppleID from it's current form (email address to my current ISP) to simply a non-email address (i.e., "Joe_Blow" instead of "[email protected]) and making my new me.com email simply the contact email for the account so I would receive correspondence from iTunes and other Apple uses to the me.com address.
Possible?

as far as i know, apple eliminated the option of changing apple ids to non-email ids a while ago, so if you are like me one of the very lucky people who have one you definitely want to KEEP it; like the unlimited data on iphone, you can't go back.
you can simply USE your new mobileme address AS your apple ID from this point on, but you will have one add'l account in your iTunes library. if you only have ONE you absolutely do NOT want that!

  • Purchased tab in "App Store" app doesn't work when AppleID is not an email address.

After updated my iPhone and iPad to iOS 6 (both 6.0&6.0.1), Purchased tab in "App Store" app doesn't work when AppleID is not an email address. This happened since 6.0 and I hope that it will be fixed in6.0.1 but it doesn't.
When I tap at Purchased tab in iPad App Store or Purchased bar in Updates tab in iPhone App Store, it just hang on "Loading...", but when I changed to other AppleID, it works. Apparently, my AppleID is not an email address but the other AppleID is an email address.
Not sure where to send my feedback to Apple about this issue.

  • IPhone - Upgrade to Software Version 5.0 - Apple ID Must be an email address

I was prompted to upgrade my iPhone to version 5.0 this morning and did. After some time, a message said that my phone had been restored to factory settings. The next message said that it would restore from a recent back up. It did. The message now says "Restore Completed" but there's a Continue button that asks for some information, including my Apple ID.
My Apple ID is not an email address. It is requiring me sign in with an Apple ID that is an email address. If I put in an email address...will all my purchases from the iTunes store be associated with that Apple ID? How can they be when they are associated with another account? Will I lose access to them? Will I have 2 Apple IDs?
    Help.
    Thanks.

No. You cannot, at present, merge Apple ID's.
Will I lose access to them?
    No.
Will I have 2 Apple IDs?
    Yes.

  • My husband and I share the same email address. Is there someway to have different AppleIDs with the same email address?

My husband and I share the same email address at home. Is there some way creating an Apple ID using the same email address? We have multiple apple devices at home (2x iphone4, imac, mini ipad, and notebook) and want our emails from that one address to come through on the different devices.

No, you cannot have the same primary email address used for two separate Apple IDs.
However, you can sign into the same email address on your separate devices for the purposes of receiving mail.  Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts & Calendars > Add Account.
Apple IDs are for using Apple services, like the App Store, iTunes, etc.
Email addresses (while used as the NAME of an Apple ID), are separate entities.

  • How can i change my appleid from an old email address to my new one

trying to update apps on my iphone, but my old appleid keys showing up. how do i get this appleid synced to my iphone?

If these apps were obtained with your old ID, you'll have to use that ID to update them. All apps are forever tied to the ID used to obtain them, & can only be updated using that ID.

  • I need to change the security questions/answers in my Appleid, but my rescue email address is no longer valid and I can't change it.

Help me change my security questions.

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include clicking here and picking a method for your country, phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • Multiple AppleIDs with linked emails unable to be switched...can I unverify an email address that I already verified?

There is a major flaw in the design and use of AppleIDs and their use across the entire Apple product line.  It could be fixed easily if I could "unverify" an email address that I used for a certain appleID.  After over an hour talking with phone tech support they had no clue what to do so I proposed a temporary solution and gave up.
The problem is I had an apple id that I used for iTunes, and I had my main email address which was from MobileMe which got switched over to iCloud.  My iTunes appleID is of the form that is just a word and not an email address.  Because of this I was unable to use it for iCloud.  The email address associated with the iTunes account appleID was my main email address which happened to be my MobileMe email address.  Apparently once an email address has been verified with an account there is no way to unverify that email address.  I already realized that I would have to have 2 appleIDs , one for iTunes and one for mobile me and I was ok with that.  The problem was that the MobileMe email address would not let me set it as my email address because it had already been verified with my iTunes appleID.  This left my MobileMe/icloud email address even though it IS an email address in and of itself, without an associated email address.  I am unable to associate the email address that I want with that appleID.  My solution was to create yet another email account and just use that but now that is causing problems with apps like "iMessage" , "Find my Friends" , and "FaceTime."  I want my correct email address (MobileMe/icloud address) to be used to identify me me with my friends and relatives act.  not the email address that I was forced to create as a temporary solution.  If there was just a way to "Unverify" an email address or merge accounts this would not be a major issue.  As it stands though this is a very confusing and incredibly annoying problem that Phone TechSupport had no clue whatsoever as to what could be done.  Does anyone know a fix or if there is some way to Unverify an email address that you used (the lady on techsupport said they couldn't).

I've also had this issue and it beggars belief that they could have something so stupid as a policy.
I have no less than 8 Apple devices that I use actively not to mention the family who  have more.
I have an Itunes account and have bought a load of music and movies etc.
I also (foolishly) took a MobileMe subscription and hardly used it.
Now, when I try to register for Facetime I can't register the one and only email address that I use.
Apple support says even though they have been using that for purchases on Itunes, App Store, MobileMe, etc etc, I cannot use it for Facetime! And Facetime requires the address so people who know me and know my one and only email address can call me on Facetime.
No, instead, I must use another new email address!!
    How totally stupid.
Support are really unhelpful on this issue as well. They keep talking about multiple accounts and the address being used on these accounts. These accounts are Itunes, MobileMe. And who do they belong to?? One person, ME!!!
The last reply from support today was:
    Dear Roger,
Unfortunately, there is no further information we have to offer and have now addressed all your concerns. This case is now considered closed. any further contact regarding this issue will be unanswered. However you are welcome to contact us if you need help with something other then this case.
    Thank you for understanding.
    Sincerely,
    Kristin
iTunes Store/App Store and MacApp Store Customer Support
Ah, NO! You have not addressed my concerns.
It is almost like they don't want any existing clients on Itunes and MobileMe to use Facebook.
    I don't get it???? Help........

  • Can't change Apple ID Email address

I have Apple ID associated with old hotmail.com email account and now i want to change it to my actual email account on yahoo.com.
When Face time was released by apple i used my Apple ID to login and added my yahoo email account like another email.
now when i try to change my Apple ID email from web sit i receive error "This email address is already in use or you may already have an Apple ID associated with this email address. Please try again or sign in using your existing Apple ID." but when i use App Store to manage my account and change my email from there it accepts but on yahoo i receive email only information that my account info have changed and when i try to login it says that my email is not verified and asks me to verify, also on web site on my account management my primary email have status "unverified" and option to resend verification email which i click and i don't receive nothing on my yahoo account.
Do you people have any idea how i can change my Apple ID to my new yahoo account and if this issue is connected with apple or yahoo?
    Thank you!

I've had this problem for a few years and last night with the help of apple support, cracked it.
    Here's what to do.
Create a new email that isn't associated with apple. And make it you Apple ID using the following steps.
    1) Make sure you're using the latest version of iTunes. You can download iTunes, free-of-charge, from the Apple website:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download
Note: Installing the latest version of iTunes will not affect your library or any items in your account that you haven't downloaded.
    2) Open iTunes, then from the Store pull-down menu at the top, choose Sign In.
    3) Enter your iTunes Store account name and password and then click Sign In.
    4) From the pull-down Store menu at the top, choose View My Account, or click the link below:
    https://buy.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/accountSummary
    5) If prompted, enter your iTunes Store account name and password, then click the View Account button.
    6) Click the Edit button on the Apple Account Information screen.
    7) Enter a new Apple ID (must be an email address) and/or a new password. Please make sure the email address you enter is one that you actively check. It is not possible to make the iTunes Store send email to an address different than the one being used for your Apple ID.
    8) Click Done to save your changes.
Once this email has been verified. Use "manage accounts" https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/ to change your Apple IDs to the desired email address.

  • Help with incorrect icloud email address set up

Several years ago, my iTunes account did not have an icloud.com or me.com email address associated with it.  When I bought my daughter an ipod, we went through the set up process and set up her name with a me.com address.  I didn't realize until it was too late, that I had assigned her name as the primary email address for my iTunes account.  Now that family sharing is available, I would like to create a new email address and add her as a child under my account.  I can't figure out how to do this.  Any suggestions?

Then they all need their own Apple ID's. Must be verified email addresses. You can create such here:
    https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/wa/createAppleId
They won't be able to use your iCloud account after doing so...you can't merge Apple ID's.

  • How the heck does one change one's email address in the Control Panel

I know this is the wrong place to post this but I don't know where the right place is!
In about a week I am changing to a different broadband provider and the email address I have associated with these forums will no longer be valid. Obviously very easy to deal with - just go to "Your Control Panel" and change the email address ! I must be missing something because I can see my email address but cannot see any way to change it ! What am I missing?

Thanks for that! I tried to use an old email address of mine but it won't let me because 'that account already exists' . Had to create a new one!
    What a wonderful bit of software this forum software is.My +5k post count did not make it through the migration;
When the migration guidelines said you have to use the same email address in the old and the new account I just changed the email address in the old java forum account to be a current email address, then signed up to the new forums with that... They could have said it must be the email address you used when you originally signed up in the old java forum - but that was back in '98 and I probably did not have access to that when the migration happened...
I don't particularly care about the post count, but as my old posts are not linked to my account it makes it difficult to search through them...

  • MY HUSBAND AND I SHARED THE SAME EMAIL ADDRESS, AT THAT TIME I PURCHASED MUSIC, NOW I HAVE MY  OWN EMAIL. I ADDED MYSELF TO THE ORIGINAL EMAIL, ON THE ORIGINAL ITUNES ACCOUNT. HOW CAN I GET MY MUSIC ON MY I PHONE. MY HUSBAND HAS ALL MY MUSIC ON HIS PHONE.

MY HUSBAND AND I SHARED THE SAME EMAIL ADDRESS, AT THAT TIME I HAD DOWNLOADED MUSIC TO MY PHONE. I GOT MY OWN EMAIL ADDRESS AND ADDED THAT EMAIL TO THE ORIGINAL ACCOUNT, WHICH ORIGINATED WITH MY HUSBANDS EMAIL.

How did you "add that email to the original account"?
You changed the AppleID to your new email address?

  • Using an alias email address in Mail for iPhone

My iPhone 4S shows no interest in using my alias email address as the default choice for sending and receiving email, even though I"ve changed the settings in iCloud. Mail persists in using my Apple ID as the default sending email address. It's a minor nuisance as my name shows up either way, but I'd like the correct email address to show. Can anyone help with this?
    Thanks.

You would think that would fix it, but it doesn't. I've set my default sending email address as the one I want to [email protected], but despite iCloud showing this as my chosen setting, emails continue to go out with my AppleID as the sending email address. I think this problem is like the case of Facetime, where people can't activate Facetime with anything but their AppleID. It's just something we'll have to wait for Apple to fix.

  • Can 2 people set up apple id with the same email address

My husband and I share the same email address can we set up our apple ids with the same email and different passwords?

No. You can share the same Apple ID for iTunes content, but for everything else...FaceTime, iMessage, iCloud, etc., you really need separate Apple ID's & these iD's must be verifiable email addresses. If you don't set things up that way, you'll have a mess on your hands.
