Applejack hung up on permissions
When I run Applejack on my PowerBook G4 (10.4.5), it works just fine until it gets to the Repair Permissions step, and there it hangs. It tells me that it takes a while, please wait, and then it begins generating its row of dots. An hour later it's up to about seven and a half rows of dots, and I'm out of time, so I shut down and reboot in standard mode so I can get to work.
Anybody had any experience with this? I've seen it before in 10.3.9, when it was variously blamed on iTunes 6.0.2 or on Chess. In that case, though, OnyX or Disk Utility couldn't repair the permissions either. Now they can, and they take only a few minutes to do it. The only problem is with Applejack. And if I skip the permission repair step in Applejack, all the other steps work fine.
What's this about, and how do I fix it? Do I need to trash Chess again?
PowerBook G4, 1.33GHz, 768 MB Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Blue screen on start up, even in safe mode, common fixes not working
I did quite a bit of searching for the problem I'm having, and it seems some of the symptoms are common, but none of the various fixes I've come across have worked. Any help pointing to other things to try would be appreciated, as it is getting harder to search for things without finding repeats of what I've already tried. Also, I was going to post this on the OSX 10.4 board, but changes in symptoms (mentioned at the end of this post) are starting to make me think this could be a hardware issue.
The main problem is that my computer boots normally until the blue screen just before the login window should appear, then hangs.
My system: iBook G4, 800 MHz, running 10.4.11, has an extra GB of RAM installed (for a total of 1.1 GB), new hard drive that is less than a year old.
Things I've tried:
Booting in safe mode: No change, still hangs at blue screen.
Removing airport card, and extra ram has no effect.
I've done a PRAM reset
I've done a PSU reset
Checked for file system and permissions errors with Disk Utility on OS CD
Booting into single user mode works fine, where I tried:
fsck -fy, no errors reported
running /etc/rc worked fine for a while
No unexpected errors or problems seen in /Library/Logs/Console/501/console.log, or in /var/log/system.log
I've temporarily moved /Library/Preferences, /Library/Caches, and /System/Library/Caches, /User/Library/Caches, /User/Library/Preferences, /System/Extensions.kextcache and /var/db/netinfo/local.nidb to make sure none of those were corrupted (plus checked preferences with plutil), nothing fixed.
I've double checked the permissions of the root directory.
This problem did not follow an update or installation of any kind. The computer just completely locked up in the middle of using Safari (and just typing in an edit box, nothing with much of a workload) and the blue screen hang happened upon rebooting after shutting down by holding down the power button.
Single user mode appeared to work fine, although I did get single user mode to hang when trying to back up a few GB of files onto a thumbdrive after copying about 90% of the files. And then a new problem came up where afterward, now the blue screen pops up and hangs about 30 seconds after running /etc/rc returns to the prompt (and about 20 seconds after last of it finishes outputting). I've tried clearing caches again but /etc/rc still causes this.
I was going to try to run AppleJack (recommended for checking permissions and clearing caches) after copying the files to the thumbdrive, but of course didn't think to install that until after I had a problem. And now that /etc/rc causes a problem, I don't know how to attach the AppleJack .dmg file other than hdiutil, which needs the /etc/rc to have been run, and also can't remount the thumbdrive to copy any more files over.
After this recent problem, I noticed that now booting from the OS CD goes to the blue screen too and no further. Has anyone else seen such a problem? I've heard of some issues with loose GPUs in the iBook G4, but they seem to mention scrambled or no/black video (video looks fine in single user mode and in open firmware, and up to the blue screen which is clear and bright). So now I don't seem to have an option to try an Archive & Install of the OS (which I was hoping to avoid, due to effort needed to reinstall other software).Thank you, I had forgotten about target mode. I was able to back up all of my files. I also copied some additional 50 GB of files of the disk as a stress test and the hard drive worked fine and quick (and because it was quicker than retrieving the same files from a network drive to my desktop).
I was hoping to also unpack the Applejack files on my desktop and put them back so I could run them in single user mode without running /etc/rc. However I haven't been able to get my Linux desktop to mount the iBook in Read-Write instead of Read-Only yet (I don't have access to another Mac at the moment). -
IPod Classic 120gb cannot be synched - unknown error 13014
While using iTunes 8.0.1 as I usually would, I unintentionally unplugged my ipod 120gb classic from the usb drive briefly. I plugged it back in and went to play a track and got the 'The iPod "ipodname" cannot by synched. An unknown error occurred (13014)' error that I've been reading has been affecting iphone/ipod touch users. I never have enabled synching though - I do all my music management through manual means since my pc is where I store my music - I just stream the songs off of my ipod when I'm on my macbook. This error comes up pretty much every time the track switches or just generally when songs are playing back from my ipod - not from the select few files that are on my macbook's local drive. It's horribly annoying! I can't ignore it either because the itunes icon bounces around on the dock until I click okay to dismiss it, and I can't switch tracks or pause with a keystroke or within itunes using the cursor until I dismiss it.
Thus far I have tried several things that were suggested in the iphone/ipod touch suggestions, including exiting the program, restarting the computer, restarting the computer and restarting the ipod, installing Applejack and repairing the permissions and clearing the cache, using the Disk Utility and repairing the permissions like that, powering down the system for a minute, upgrading to 8.0.2., and completely reinstalling (using 8.0.2 since apple has taken down the previous version).
I'm at my wits end here.. I need a solution.
Help!
-KyleI don't use Genius so its not a feature I have running.. I've tried every suggestion I've read (that seemed to fix most people's problems) and still am having an issue. The computer I'm currently on is running version 8.0.0 of iTunes and I'm not having issues though..

I'm not a Mac user so please bear with me. I am helpdesk for a business and I am have issues with our G5. About a month ago our user went to sign on and when it came up the the spinning rainbow and all that appeared was the question mark on the bar in the upper right corner. So after trying and trying to get that account to work, I gave up and created her a new account and copied over her files. This made me think that the sector that stores the startup for that account was now bad.
Now today she started up the computer and it was doing the flashing question mark thing at the start up. During startup the hard drive clicks and beeps anywhere from 17 - 20 times and then stops and gets the question mark. I looked around on Apples support site and did the rest of the PRAM and then tried to do the repair part in the disk utillity of the installer. Well it sees the hard drive but it sees it as 0 bytes and doesn't let me click anything. So I then tried the hardware utillity. I ran the extended test and since I can't just test the hard drive it came up with this error code on the Mobo section "2 FAN/4/8:DRIVE BAY". Can someone answer me what this error is so I can get rid of it and hopefully run the hard drive tests?
Thanks
David PS - I don't know what version of OS X is installed?Might want to start with Apple's Mac 101 Help:
http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/help/
It can help walk you (and us) through what steps...
#1 boot into Open Firmware and Reset NVRAM
#2 boot to your Apple Hardware Test disk using OPTION key and run tests
#3 run Memtest 4 from Single User Mode
MacIntouch: Bad RAM
#4 clone your boot drive system and apps and backup data
#5 Tiger is now out on DVD with 10.4.6 - updated and easier to upgrade
#6 boot into Single User Mode
run
Best done after ANY freeze or hard restart
#6 install Applejack gets run in Single User Mode
Using Applejack
#7 MacFixit: Repairing Permissions
General Troubleshooting permissions
#8 Repairing Drives
#9
#10 Backup!
I would invest in Tiger 10.4.6 DVD. Even if it is not the version being used. It can repair your G5 better.
Get two new drives. One as a backup could be FW800, and would also have room for an emergency system, as well as just the working system, and a 3rd partition as data backup large enough to hold your existing drive.
adding an account when the drive had problems may have been a temporary fix and left a dirty filesystem. First step always being to run 'fsck' to check the disk first before even doing a normal startup.
The "?" flashing question mark means that nvram has 'lost' the path to the boot drive or the boot drive is not ready, or damaged directory or boot blocks. Not sure how it got to be in the upper right corner of the bar though... ???
Preferences (.plist files) may be corrupt.
Cache files and folders are often the first place that problems arise and start and easy to remove after running 'fsck' and running APPLEJACK (3rd party) that was installed previously.
Temperature Monitor can help keep you informed of the internal thermal sensors and temperatures. If the fan is not working, if a drive bay is getting too warm/hot then, well, heat kills or shortens the life of disks and memory and computers.
I think you will need to have the G5 in for service though to have someone who knows G5 and is certified (you still have AppleCare, right?) look at it.
So for the last month it has basically been running probably on borrowed time or thin ice. -
Can't Transfer ANYTHING from ITunes to IPod
just in the last week or so i've been unable to transfer anything from itunes to my ipod. this includes podcasts and purchased music. i have no idea what the problem is. the other night i left the two to sync for at least 10 hours and when i checked it the next morning it was barely halfway through the first import. i also try to eject my ipod and my comp freezes and im forced to turn off my comp and restart my frozen ipod. (it stays in the 'do not disconnect' stage) i am running itunes 6, but this problem just started recently. i havent been able to update my ipod or load any new podcasts in forever, please help!!
Okay, now I'm really unhappy. Since my last post a few days ago, I bit the bullet (really, I just needed the excuse) and bought a brand new 60 GB 5G video ipod. Connects via USB (annoying, but at least we are on completely different set of ports from the firewire), and guess what? THE EXACT SAME BEHAVIOR! All 8+ GB of my purchased music (and videos) does not transfer. The same error message about the iPod software being too old. This is truly ridiculous.
My machine checks out okay with Diskwarrior, I've run Applejack repeatedly to fix permissions, clear the caches, check preference files, etc., cleared the pram, and have reset the machine via open firmware. I'm exasperated to say the least. I've even de- and re-authorized the computer for the music store.
Now to add some complexity to this mess, my subscribed podcasts DO transfer over. Is this a DRM issue? Something about iTunes is wonky here. I'll keep poking around, but I'm having a very hard time with this being acknowledged as a problem. For many people, including me, this has been going on for several months. -
Screenshots stopped working properly after 10.5.7 update
Hi everybody,
after the 10.5.7 whenever I take a screenshot of my Mac using COMMANDSHIFT3 I get a mostly green picture instead of the correct screenshot.
Please have a look at the picture... any idea of what might be causing it?
The strange thing is that, most of the time, COMMANDSHIFT4 or COMMANDSHIFT+3SPACE work correctly.
Thanks!
Message was edited by: triveThe problem seems to have disappeared after running Applejack autopilot (repair disk, permissions, flush cache, check pref files, etc...).
Thanks anyway! -

My Computer keeps freezing AGAIN!
My G4 keeps freezing in the middle of tasks and I have to shut it down and start it back up again. This was happening a few weeks ago but I installed a new harddrive so I have PLENTY of memory AND space on my comp.
Why is it doing this and how do I stop it?
-GWell, you really need to repair the boot drive every time it freezes, backup it up, and 'start over' probably.
It isn't how much memory, but that it is not producing errors, and that the files and system aren't corrupt.
Might want to start with Apple's Mac 101 Help:
http://www.apple.com/support/mac101/help/
#1 boot into Open Firmware and Reset NVRAM
#2 boot to your Apple Hardware Test disk using OPTION key and run tests
#3 run Memtest 4 from Single User Mode
MacIntouch: Bad RAM
#4 clone your boot drive system and apps and backup data
#5 Tiger is now out on DVD with 10.4.6 - updated and easier to upgrade
#6 boot into Single User Mode
run
Best done after ANY freeze or hard restart
#6 install Applejack gets run in Single User Mode
Using Applejack
#7 MacFixit: Repairing Permissions
General Troubleshooting permissions
#8 Repairing Drives
#9
#10 Backup!
Along with 'fsck' and "Applejack" you might want to consider Alsoft Disc Warrior as well. And make sure you have an emergency boot drive, AND a working clone of your system. -
Very weird permisions show during permissions repair - can anyone explain?
Hi there, I was using a camera tethered via usb when the capture software hung. Force quiting via the finder failed, and the app did not show up in activity monitor or top in terminal. I was forced to turn the power off as when i restarted the screen went grey and hung. I initiated a permissions repair via applejack and noticed that I had a lot of weird preferences, specifically that most seemed to be listed as aliases eg lrw-r--r-- Is this normal? I know a little but I'm no whizz. I'm quiet concerned so help greatfully received. Many thanks.

For some reason 9 "-"'s shows up as long lines, formatting i guess

Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 and 10.6:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard changed the location of a number of system components. -
Is this a permissions problem? A .plist problem? Is there a fix?
I've just done an erase-and-install of 10.5.2 on a new Intel iMac that I took delivery on six weeks ago. (It was corrupted by damaged files from my MacBook Pro which is still being repaired by Apple). From my G5 PowerMac I brought over ONLY data files, templates for iWork from Application Support, and Mail folders. Other data files were restored (drag and drop) from an iMac backup I did before the erase-and-install.
Several times recently, on start-up, I got the message "Default folder is an application you downloaded from the internet (two or three days ago)... open it?" And I had Version Tracker telling me every day I had to register, and then downloading files that were empty, no software, just the icon. And that behavior just suddenly stopped a couple days ago for no apparent reason. (I'd trashed all VT's preference files several times and reinstalled, but that had not fixed it.) And Now Contact tells me I don't have an email client and can't send email.
I've installed EVERY application from a fresh download or the original install disk. I've repaired permissions frequently after installations. I ran Disk Warrior which found numerous Custom Icon Flag, Extended Attribute, and Text Encoding errors, all of which were repaired.
I'm still getting warnings that I'm opening an application for the first time, when that is not the case... I think it's always an application that has been recently updated, (like Data Guardian) but opened maybe several times before.
What could be causing this? Could I have corruption from recovered Data Files? My MBP was really fried by a hot swollen battery and I'd transferred files from that to my iMac while it was frying. Permissions seem to have been a 10.5 problem... Is this bug not fixed yet? (I miss Applejack; I'll bet it would have fixed this.)
DaruI remembered today (when it happened again) that my permissions for MenuCalendarClock have been changed at least twice. I set it to hide when using other apps, and that has reverted to default.
I also just discovered that AdobeReader disappeared from my applications folder. I'm downloading it again. -
Cannot start Mac mini server after changing permissions
I have a two-day-old Mac mini (server version) and all was OK until I decided to change the permissions on both hard drives (and all enclosed folders and files) to give read/write access to administrators. I received quite a few error messages about invalid kernel file extensions (I think) which I elected to ignore or override. Then when trying to log off, the machine hung.
Safe reboot does not work. I have rebooted using <Command> S and get the following amongst the many messages:
Bug: launchctl.c:3557 (23930):17: ioctl(s6, SIOCAIFADDR_IN6, &ifra6) != -1
then at the end of display, I get the following as the last 4 lines:
launchctl: Dubious permissions on file (skipping): /Library/LaunchDaemons
launchctl: Dubious permissions on file (skipping): /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
launchctl: Dubious permissions on file (skipping): /etc/mach_init.d
AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement: initialization complete
There are no peripherals and I cannot try re-installing Snow Leopard for two reasons. First, I have no disk. More importantly, there is no CD drive - this is a Mac mini.
Please help!HHMNY wrote:

doing this completed scrambled your system. you now have no choice but to reinstall Snow Leopard.
and in the future NEVER use "apply to enclosed items on ANY system created folders. and certainly NEVER EVER use it on the whole system drive. -
DISK UTILITY PROBLEMS : unable to verify or repair disk and/or permissions
hi all...first time poster.
i have been reading past posts for 3 hours and i am still unable to resolve these issues i am having.
it all started with a failed attempt to install an update (QB2006_R4Updater.dmg) that i downloaded for a new version of Quickbooks Pro 2006 that i just purchased. the install continuously got hung up on "Searching Macintosh HD" looking for the application.
i called quickbooks tech support and after about an hour of troubleshooting and 4-5 failed attempts to boot in safe mode...the rep told me it seemed to be a system problem.
regarding safe mode:
when i try to boot up in safe mode...immediately after hearing the start up tone i press and hold shift until the gray apple appears then release it. the system continues to boot for about 30-45 seconds and then shuts down.
regarding disk utility:
i have tried to verify and repair the disk permissions to no avail...i also booted from the osX 10.4.6 installer disk (i am currently running osX 10.4.7) and tried to verify and repair the disk but on every occassion it gets hung up a little less than half way through - no error message - it will just keep going until i need to reboot the system. i cant even force quite disk utility.
i have also tried removing the itunes.pkg file as well as moving itunes to the desktop followed by running disk utility...but the same results.
some other info about this system...
as well as running all of tigers bundled software...i have installed cs2, microsoft office x, suitcase fusion, windows media player and quickbooks pro 2006.
not really sure what i need to or should do...just want to get the system so i can continue to keep up with software updates and use the utilities to keep everything working properly.
thank you in advance for any help you might be able to give me.
17" iMac PowerPC G4 Mac OS X (10.4.7)From what you've described there are several possibilities, none very encouraging:
1. You have a motherboard problem
2. You have bad RAM
3. Your hard drive is failing or damaged
Given what you've described I would recommend trying this:
Boot into single-user mode by restarting the computer and after the chime press and hold down COMMAND-S keys until the computer starts up to a black screen with white type. When startup has completed you should see a prompt. At the prompt enter the following commands pressing return after each:
prompt> /sbin/fsck -fy
If you do not get a return message "Filesystem OK" then repeat the above command until the "Filesystem OK" message appears. If you repeat the command more than seven times without success, then the drive cannot be repaired. To restart OS X enter:
prompt> reboot
Download the utility TinkerTool System and use it to clear out all user and system caches, font caches, and log files.
If none of this works, then you will have to reformat the hard drive as follows:
1. Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button, then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed to install OS X. You can upgrade to the most recent version by downloading and installing the Combo Updater for the desired version level. -
After having to do a forced shut down (holding down power button) due to freezing I cannot again progress past the grey screen with the apple logo. The spinning cog comes on at first then disappears leaving just the apple logo (in case that is sognificant).
I have tried to find a solution through the support pages but have unfortunately been unsuccessful in my endeavours so do apologise I have overlooked the obvious and would really appreciate some help. I've just started the second year of my Uni and the timing couldn't be worse.
I have tried the following:
1) held down option and started in "recovery 10.8.4" from which I used disk utility to "repair disk", which at first needed some repairs and then I ran it again for the second time to confirm it had a clean bill of health.
2) I then ran "repair disk permissions" and repeated a second time to confirm it was all working well (however one error remained "warning: SUID file "system/library/CoreS... has been modified and will not be repaired" but have read that this should not be a big problem) After which I tried to start up again and it hung with the apple logo on the grey screen.
3) tried resetting the PRAM by holding down cmd+option+P+R before powering up, but it only chimes once and then restarts the mac, then chimes once and repeats the process again in and endless cycle.
4) I then tried 1 and 2 again and then tried to reinstall OSX 10.8.4 from the recovery mode, but this came up with the message "an error occured while preparing the installation. Try running this application again" to which I followed but to no avail.
5) I tried starting up in safe mode by holding down shift after the chime at startup but safe mode did not start after 3 hours. During which point I was drowning my frustration in the pub.
6) I tried starting in verbose mode with cmd+V but after running the script it reverts back to the grey screen.
I have not tried booting from an install disk as im a few hours from home on a uni campus with no apple store in sught and all day lectures so no hope to visit far away stores. I hope I have explained it in enough detail and appreciate any direction or thoughts as to it being salvageable. Failing which it might be time go go back to the pub and remember the importance of regular backups!
Many thanks
StephenI have one more development to add. In step "4" above I suspected that it could be something to with the Ethernet settings as I hadn't had the option of typing in the colleges wifi credentials. So I tried the "get help online" option to test it, managed to sign in and tried the step 4 again.
This time I received a different error message "could not find installation information for this machine".
Thanks -
MBP Hung and OS X Reinstalls Fail
Originally my MacBook Pro hung and upon rebooting it got stuck in a loop at the startup chime.
Tried to restore from backup but it failed.
Tried to reinstall OS X and it failed as well. It was acting like a hard drive issue so I reformatted and retried, same issue. Replaced the hard drive and same issue.
Here is the install log on the failed installs. Any direction on where the issue may reside would be greatly appreciated.

Software Update Hung, now Apple Apps wont open
I was recently doing a regular Software Update download, and left it to run overnight. When I checked the next morning, it hand hung before completing the downloads (Safari update and others).
Since I had nothing but the spinning beachball, I had to do a hard reboot. Now I can boot and use some apps, but others, including all of the Apple apps will not open (except QT).
I have used Disk Utility to check and repair permissions (though it didn't see any error). I have tried a Safe Boot, but nothing has yet worked to reset things. I am searching for my original boot disk to try and launch with it and see if I can repair....
Fortunately this in not my main computer anymore, and my data is in a different partition and also backed up.
Any thoughts on getting my old iMac G5 back to normal?
CHUCKHi Chuck,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, or things don't load/run, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates again, or even do an A&I if you have enough free disk space.
The combo update for PowerPC-based Macs...

The combo update for Intel-based Macs...
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10411comboupdateintel.html
Repair Permissions before & after re-install, then reboot again each time.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.
I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
If it appears to be time for An Archive & Install, which gives you a new OS, but can preserve all your files, APPs, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space...
