AppleTalk Gone, Network Printers Now Invisible

Despite Apple's claims that printing is now "easier," Snow Leopard has seriously mucked up network printing. Used to be I could Add a Printer, and under "Default" see all the available printers on the network; I could then Add a printer I selected and a driver would be applied, and that was it.
With Snow Leopard, AppleTalk is gone, and now the printers simply don't even show up, period. Apple tech support was unhelpful, suggesting that it was a problem for the printer makers which they suggested I call; I replied that they should know full well that the printer makers would not be of any help whatsoever--they usually take a year or more to get up to snuff with this kind of stuff.
It amazed me that Apple made this move without having a suggested fix prepared. The best the tech support person could do was to suggest that I move the files to a computer that could print and do my printing from there. Naturally, that is a completely unacceptable "fix," except for emergencies.
I wound up digging out my old Powerbook and setting it up in the office, enabling printer sharing; it works, but it means having a computer running just for that purpose.
Does anyone know a better workaround for getting network printers back up? In my office, we have a few Fuji-Xerox network copiers which have up-to-date drivers--it's simply a matter of getting Snow Leopard to see the printers at all in the first place. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Many help documents I have read about printing in Snow Leopard mention a submenu in the Print dialog called "Nearby Printers," presumably in the "Printer" drop-down menu. I don't see that. Is it contextual, or can it be activated somehow, or am I possibly looking for it in the wrong place?
I am beginning to get the feeling that something went wrong with my 10.6 install and somehow an important element for printing got broken....
From what I've seen, the "Nearby Printers" only show up if you have bonjour printers (or shared printers) available to add. The menu doesn't seem to appear at all if you don't have any bonjour printers on your network.

  • Solution for Network Printers who've lost Appletalk?

Figured out what appears, so far, to be a solution to those having issues with older network printers and the loss of Appletalk in SL.
After trying everything recommended to make my HP 4050n work under SL, and just about to give up and start shopping for a replacement printer (much to my disgust - my 4050n has been a workhorse and is still in perfect working order, even at 10 years old!), I spied the $29 Apple USB Ethernet Adapter I purchased for my MB Air sitting on the corner of my desk.
Well, I had tried everything else to no avail (because my ethernet IP had to remain unchanged from its DHCP settings for my cable modem to work), I figured, what the heck, and moved the printer's cat 5 cable from my e-net hub/switch to the adapter plugged into a USB port. Lo and behold, SUCCESS!!!
The OS recognized it as a separate "USB Ethernet" device, allowing me to set a separate IP Address for the printer than the modem. Following the steps below, some as outlined already by others, I now have my legacy 4050n working and available as a network printer. Yay!
    1. Cold Boot your printer to reset to original factory settings (see manual or mfgr.'s website for method).
    2. Print out a configuration page using the printer's menu and note the new IP address (apparently, it's often 192.0.0.192).
    3. Plug in your printer's cat 5 cable into the adapter and the adapter into an open USB port.
    4. In System Preferences > Network, configure the new "USB Ethernet" selection's IP address manually (I used the "DHCP with manual address" setting) - I found that it's best to set it one number down from the printer address, so, in my case, at 192.0.0.191.
    5. Go to Print & Fax in System Preferences and click on the "+" button to add a new printer.
    6. In the drop down window select IP for the connection type at the top, then a protocol (in my case, I have the HP with a Jetdirect card, so the choice was the HP Jetdirect socket), the enter the printer address from the configuration printout and type an identifying name into the Name box. When I did this, it almost immediately found the correct Printer driver (something that had alluded me in all my previous attempts!) and I was back in business.
Here's the link in the Apple store to the adapter:

    Hope this helps!

    Hi George,
Does this happen for every Network Printer or specific one?
Did you find any network performance problem during your issue?
Firstly, please check your printer driver, update to the latest version on both client side and Terminal server. If you are using Easy print driver then you can try to disable that and check the result. For that you need to disable the option “Use
Remote Desktop Easy Print printer driver first” under below path.
    Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Terminal Services\Terminal Server\Printer Redirection
In addition also check there is no any network issue. More information:

    2.  Bandwidth Allocation for Terminal Server connections over RDP
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

  • Upgraded to 10.5.8 and now can't see either of my networked printers

Hello all, I just upgraded my G5 dual 2.5 to 10.5.8. I have two printers that are both connected to separate Airport Extremes. My G5 ethernet port is connected to a linksys WET11 wireless ethernet bridge, which is in turn connected to the wi-fi network of the main airport. Here is my problem. I can surf the web just fine, so clearly my G5 is seeing the Airport. However ever since upgrading to 10.5.8 I can't add either of my networked printers in the printer setup. It just doesn't see any printers. I've reset the printing in the OS (control clicking on the print prefs and resetting followed by reboot) I've rebooted both the printer and the airport separately and I've double checked that the printer is set as a shared printer in the airport admin software. My laptop (an ibook g4) also running 10.5.8, has no problem seeing both networked printers and printing to them. I'm flummoxed as to why my tower suddenly can't. (It could see both with the exact same setup running 10.4.11) Any ideas? Your help is greatly appreciated, since this is very frustrating! thanks,
    -Andrew

Your network setup is a little complicated. Can you explain it a little better and confirm that there's only one DHCP server in it - all devices get IP addresses from one of the Airport Extremes, for example?
It sounds like maybe you have two or more separated subnets.

  • Cant set up network printers

We have a mac pro running Leopard server 10.5.4. Four leopard client computers (10.5.4 also) bound to the server. DNS is working, and users can log in fine to the server.
Im trying to set up network printers and I'm totally failing. The first printer is an HP laser plugged into a USB port on the back of the server. I add the printer in the System Preferences window. I've tested printing from the server itself and it works fine. In Server Admin, in the Print service, I create the queue (which sees the printer I just installed), I check IPP, and start the Print service. Heres where the annoyances begin. If I go to workgroup manager, click on one of the user accounts, go to preferences, and try to force the printer to show up in the user's list of printers, the list of AVAILABLE printers is empty! So I cant force the printer on the user.
Fine, but if I go to one of the client computers, log in, go to system preferences, and try to add the printer, nothing shows up! When I try to set the printer up on the client, Im making sure that Im selecting IPP, putting the server address in, but the queue name never shows up.
Where am I going wrong? And is this even the right way to be going about this? Is there any step by step process for this?

Hi, not near one of my OS9 machines right now, but do you have Appletalk ON, and, umm, err, there's a place to Choose Ethernet & connect by IP. Then is Printer Sharing turned only on the one it's connected to?

  • I can't see my network Printers when i installed Time Capsule

I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I had a wireless network using my NetGear router so i can share internet and two network printers. The network printers are connected to the router using ethernet wires. Now that i installed Time Capsule i can't get the Network Printer to print.

I did what you said, made sure that both network printers where turned on connected to TC and ready to print, then i opened my system Preference, Print & Fax, i removed my two printers that where there before and working, then hit the plus sign, add printer, here's what's different, my MacBook Pro, under AppleTalk and one of my printers can up and it now works but the other didn't. So on my iMac i tried the same thing but no printer showed up under AppleTalk, i did find the two printers under "Default" and Bonjour was under "kind" i said install to both and it did. I just tried printing to both printers and now i have two bouncing printer icons on my doc with a massage " Attempting to connect to host 192.168.1.10" for one of the printers and the second "Attempting to connect to host XRX92CABD.local." i'm starting to think that i didn't set up the TC correctly or i have some option in TC setup wrong.

  • Is anyone having issues with printing to network printers with 10.8.4?

I have upgraded our schools to Mountain Lion. Ever since the beginning of the year we have had issues with network printers. They are all HP printers, when they go to sleep a user has to turn off the printer and turn it back on then resend the print job. Now users are being asked to put a password itno the Print Operator group. This never happened before. Cups is changing the queue names to MCX_1 or 2 etc. Not keeping the queue name. All these people are in WGM and have printers set for their group. So I have reset the printer settings on the machines, then restart relog in and get the list of printers they can print too and within 1 day they are unable to print. I am trying my very best to get this issue fixed and all solutions have been exausted. So without having to go to every computer and going into the Ldadmin group thru a terminal, is there anything that anyone has done to fix this issue with out visiting every computer. Thank you.

The printers failing to wake from sleep is an issue. A print request should be waking them.
You have not mentioned what printer server is involved. I could assume it is OS X Server since you mentoned WGM, but it would be nice to have you confirm this. Then I can start to suggest some actions.

  • Network Printers Loading Slow

    Hello,
I am an IT technician working on a remote desktop/terminal server running Windows Server 2008 R2.
I have run into a problem recently where a user's network printer connections are taking a long time to load, some times up to five minutes after they have logged in.
This is a problem as the user has over 20 network printers in their profile that they use, and they often try to begin printing as soon as they've logged in.
What I have found is that the printers load instantly if the user's profile is changed to local, however we want our user accounts set to roaming for other reasons.
I am now wondering if it is possible to specify maybe through group policy or the registry, to load network printer connections from the user's local profile, but keep everything else roaming. Or if there is another solution to this problem
    that could be recommended?
Thank you so much for your time, this issue has been giving me trouble for some time now and if you could help me solve it I'd greatly appreciate it.
    Best regards,
    -George

  • No network printers could be found. Windows XP SP2 All In One Officejet L7680

    1.  I can print to my network printer just fine.  It is assigned a static IP address of 10.0.0.1
    2.  However My solution center software started messing up badly (it use to work fine scan/fax etc... )
    3.  When i attempt to reinstall everything is ok except for when it tries to find the printer.
it says "Search complete, no printers found." so there is an option to enter the IP address manually and I do.  It immediately says "No network printers could be found".  obviously since i can print to the printer and and ping it and get to its home page the printer is fine.
     4.  This happens with 2 of the three versions of software available for download.  The IT professional use works but it doesn't have solution center which i need to scan docs.
The basic and the full suite both exhibit the same behavior.
     5.  I've followed all instructions on troubleshooting with software removal and installation on the HP site but nothing has worked.
     6.  I see others have posted similar problem with no reply or resolution posted.
      * - one important note is that even when following the advanced removal process (uninstall, msconfig to stop services, unregister hp services, delete directories and registry entries).... the "Shop for HP Supplies" still exists somewhere or at least i think so... because when i try to install software from scratch it always says this portion of the software is already installed... so this is a little fishy because it sounds like maybe there is some stuff still hanging around.... I also tried running the advanced software removal tool and it doesn't seem to do much good either.
BTW the problems i started having with solution center all occurred after I allowed one their automatic updates to execute.

    Hi,
I ran into this a few months back... and ultimately i posted some how-to's on here... but basically something got botched with the isntallation... and what i learned thru pain was that un-installing and re-installing wasn't enough because the un-install process did not remove (registry entries, files/directories, services, ports, etc... in order to make for a clean reinstall).
I also learned that the downloadable software does not have all of the framework needed for communication.  So I had to find my original install disk and i had to go thru a very painfull (30min to 1hr) search and destroy registry mission... and other software removal steps.  Once i got the software off completely and re-isntalled the sol man software worked without issue on detecting and finding the device and using the software.
Now since then i read in another article (you can find it)... that HP provided a 2nd more advanced removal tool... but I'm not sure how well that works...
Again if you search for my posts i think i put everything in there that you need to do.... and i do agree that I will never by a nother mid grade small office printer from HP... hardware is fine but software support and workability is complete *#&%)#&

  • Install of HP network printers failing.

    OS- Windows 7 32bit
Printers-  Laserjet 2605dn and deskjet 6840
I had to reinstall Windows 7 because the spooler would not stay running.  That's working now.  When I try to install either printer through
"devices and printers" it finds the printers on the network just fine. When you say install you get the page that lists all the companies and models.  These two do not appear there, so you have to pick windows update.  It comes back and says it can't download the list of devices, to try again later.  Two days now and it still doesn't work. Tried downloading the drivers.cabs form Windows.update.catalog and manually put them in, but that fails also.  I have a dual boot 32/64 system and the 64bit worked not problem.  Microsoft gives you circular fixes that don't work.  Any ideas?  I went to the logs and it throws a error that just says it failed when I manually install.  Nothing on the auto-install.  I really don't want to go the port route.  Have always had problems with that as the ips change every power on.  Thanks
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Well here's the bottom line.  After reinstalling windows 7, down loading stand alone drivers for my HP printers, asking questions on multiple web sites, reading countless pages of computer chats,  here is what finally worked.
The spooler started working properly after the reinstall for local printers but the network printers would not load.
Finally, I ran a long usb cable from machine to laser printer and it installed automatically with no errors.
    I removed that device.
I added a new network printer the normal way and it installed correctly.
I then added the other network printer and it installed correctly.

  • Network Printers not showing in Profile manager?

Does Profile Mangager in Lion Server show network printers? I can get USB printers to appear, but the network printers that I have mapped in the Printers & Faxes system pref don't appear? Is there something that needs to be done to make them appear? For now, I'm using Workgroup Manager to push printers, but it would be nice if I could use Profile Manager.
The network printers are shared out so they can be used with a program called AirPrint Activator for iPad printing.

I'm on Mountain Lion Server, and had the same issue; restarting Profile Manager made the printers appear, although maybe I just needed to wait longer.

  • Need helping printing to networked printers.

I need help setting up network printers that have a code on them for each individual. There is no place to put a code so the printer will know who is printing what. I have installed 3 printers and they will not print, they just go to a paused mode and when you hit resume in reverts back to pause because it is looking for a code. I have tried it another way but it asks for a user name and password and all we have are codes. The workplace is using a windows based server and the copiers are listed as followed.

    Thanks in advance

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
In order to provide the user with the ability to input a user code, the respective printer driver would have to provide the facility. If this feature did exist on a previous version of OS X, then you may have to check the vendors web site to see if there is a driver for 10.6.
If you are not sure if the function was supported previously, then go through all the user menus for the driver. The function may be present but located in an unusual location. Or it could require an additional file (aka plugin) that could be missing from the driver installation or not compatible with 10.6.
The other thing to note is that if you have the Mac's printing via a Windows queue, you will have to provide user credentials for SMB print queues. This is typically a Windows user account - not the Mac's account details. If you don't want to create accounts for the Mac users on the Windows server, then you can use LPD rather than SMB to connect to the Windows queues. This does require UNIX Printing Services to be enabled on the server.

I entered the incorrect password for my home wifi network, and now I can't change it. How do I clear out the wrong password so that I can enter a correct one?

Settings > wi-fi  then tap on the little blue arrow next to the network you want to change. You have to tap on the blue arrow and not on the name.
Now at the top tap on "forget this network".
After that, the iPhone will think your home network is a new network and will ask you for the password to connect.

  • Network printers take long time to show in control panel - devices and printers

    G'day,
an annoying effect both on Win 8.1 and Win Server 2012 R2: after installing/connecting a network printer for a user, it takes about 10 minutes (sic!) till printer is shown in devices and printers...
Printer is shown and can be used immediately after connect in word/notepad, but properties of printers can only be managed via devices and printers. Work around for setting standard printer: open notepad, click
    print and right-click printer.
But we have to choose a special printer profile, which cannot be done else than devices and printers.
Sometimes even previously installed printers do not show for minutes after logon...
    Restarting spooler: no effect
    Changing drivers: no effect
Printers are Konica C554 series and 4700P series with Konica PCL drivers.

Open the printer folder the spooler team built. It's hidden but available and will list just the printers not the devices.
If the print shows up immediately, the spooler has the information.  You will be running the shell command to invoke the old UI.

Enumerating into the Devices and printers UI is then the issue.
