Appletalk issue for snow leopard.  Help me save my 6l from the landfill!

First off, search is my friend. But sometimes, friends can let you down.
I have a Laserjet 6l. It is a perfectly functional GREAT printer that has served me well since 1994. The cartridges are $12, are refillable and last for years, via a wireless print server and appletalk.
It had been working great up until the point we upgraded to snow leopard. We all know, no more appletalk.
So, I pulled the wireless card out of the print server and connected directly to my MPB with an ethernet cable (to the print server, netgear ps111) and used the dedicated print server ip address of 192.168.1.51. So that worked! Yeah!
However, plugging the ethernet from the print server (that had just worked connect directly to my MPB) to my airport extreme base station will not work.
Oh, and if you're wondering why I'm using the external print server (I know the Airport has a built in print server), it's because the laserjet 6l has a legacy parallel port that plugs into the netgear ps111. In other words, no USB. I has also tried a parallel to USB adapter, but had no luck with that.
So to summarize:
HP laserjet 6l connected to netgear ps111 (parallel cable).
Netgear ps111 connected to MPB (Leopard) via ethernet, WORKS GREAT!
BUT-Netgear ps111 connected to airport extreme via ethernet, does not work.
I know this seems like a tremendously arduous and arcane amount of effort. You might ask, "why don't you just stop being so cheap and go out and buy a new printer".
I have another printer that works great. I even got it for free after reclaiming it from someones trash, but the printer cartridges last about 5 minutes, and cost $50. So I'd prefer not to use it at all.
Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Thanks for your very well thought out reply. Clearly, you are a man of reason and sound logic. Unfortunately, your response did not reach me in time.
The issue was resolved via a 1-800-my-apple phone call that was bumped to a senior tech, (Eric).
He very quickly and astutely resolved my issue by noticing that the DHCP range of the Airport Extreme was out of the range of the fixed IP address on the netgear print server.
AE router's go 10.10.10.00 to 10.10.10.200. (or past 200, if that's what you want)
The Netgear PS fixed IP is, 192.168.1.51. Resetting the AE to the standard 192.168.0.0 format did the trick.
Now, I am stuck again with the wretched, affordable reliability of my HP Laserjet 6L for another 14 years.
**** you to **** Apple! **** you to **** AND your competent resourceful army of miscreants!!!!
I'm going back to Dell.

  • I bought a new HD to install into my 2009 macbook pro.  I cannot find my install disk for Snow Leopard.  Can I install one of the newer OS's without a disk?

Is there a way to either reinstall the OSX version that is currently on my Macbook Pro, onto the new HD or do I have to have the Snow Leopard disk and then upgrade to the newer versions all over again?

Depending on your processor and RAM installed, you can install lion from the app store under the apple drop down menu. You have to have at least 2 GB of RAM installed and you have to have an intel core 2 duo processor to run Lion. This you can find out in "About This Mac" under the apple drop down menu. That is the only OS that's newer than yours and one that isn't installed from a disc
    hope this helps

  • Damaged install disk for Snow leopard. How can I restore from timemachine

    Hello,
I got SMART warning about my hard disk, I got it replaced by a shop, but said I would do OS restore myself. (cant afford cost )
Thought it would be simple - but it is anything but.
It appears my install DVD is damaged, so was not able to boot with Grey OS install disk - holding the C key.
I managed to get iMac to boot up using the old disk  - using firewire dock. However I was not able to restore old disk and OS to new disk, Due to IO read error.
(this is why I had the SMART warning).
So I am unable to get the OS on the new HD using the old disk or the DVD as these are both damaged.
The computer is running, so I thought I would try buying and downloading LION - then using the migration tool .  The download is still running after 2 days.
I went to apple store, and was told that they cannot replace DVD , so I should bring in the iMac = and pay for the restore.  Dont wish to do this.
As I have the computer and OS running, is there anything I can do to get a time machine restore from another backup disk (USB).
This I hope would resolve my woes.......

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775 (telephone numbers for other countries - http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57). Provide the serial number and specifications of the Mac.
Sorry - my profile is wrong. Disk is 10.6.2  It is the original disk that came with the machine.
    Garbage in, garbage out.

  • Re-Installing Snow leopard - help please

I bought my MacBook Pro with leopard and later upgraded to SnowLeopard. So I have a Leopard disk and a Snow Leopard disk. I want to completely re-install the system to start fresh, with a time machine backup, so I figured the best way was to erase the drive with disk utility on the startup disk and re-install OSX(unless anyone has a better idea)
But the question I have is, do I have to install Leopard again and then upgrade to snow leopard, or can I start straight from the leopard upgrade disk?
Thank you so much for any help!

just what do you mean by "system to start fresh, with a time machine backup"?

you haven't explained why you want to do this. a better idea might be not to reinstall at all.
But the question I have is, do I have to install Leopard again and then upgrade to snow leopard, or can I start straight from the leopard upgrade disk?
you don't have to install leopard first. but it's far from clear that you need to reinstall at all.

  • USB3 adapters or thunderbolt docks for Snow Leopard?

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro, 15" with USB2 and Thunderbolt. Any way I can add USB3 working in Snow Leopard? The thunderbolt docks require Mountain Lion 10.8 and rely on Apple USB 3 drivers that do not exist in Snow Leopard. Also I have no express card slot so I can't use Express card based adapters.
    Thanks

No. Upgrade and buy the CalDigit device if your computer has Thunderbolt.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

  • Opinions on best install method for Snow Leopard

Good morning. I've pre-ordered the family pack for Snow Leopard. I have many applications, music, etc. on my various Macs and am just wondering, in the opinions of the masses, what is the best suggested installation procedure to use for Snow Leopard? Archive and install? Or something else?
    Thanks for the input.

It takes out the "code" redundant for snow leopard. I would think this is the PPC code taken out w/c makes sense because if you look at this way. Its not compatible for PPC anymore. Its much faster. So all the kernel files and system files will all be intended for intel. Data files(music, preferences, movies, pictures etc..)will not be affected

The ntp-4.2.8 folder that's created when you download the /ntp-4.2.8.tar.gz file and unzip it. Inside it are subfolders, such as clockstuff w/propdelay.o and libntp w/a_md5encrypt.o, assertions.o, atoint.o, etc. Many .o files abound.
OK, but this isn't .o, it's -o. I don't know of any file extension that uses the - hyphen. Are there any?
Anyway, at the end of flatsixracer's instructions, for sudo ntpd --version, he wrote, "(should now be: ntpd [email protected])" So, since he gets that when running the update, I'm thinking this can go either way, with or without the -o, and be normal.

    many thanks Carl.

You must boot from another drive in order to erase the system drive.
Try starting up with Snow Leopard DVD inserted and C depress. That should get you booted from the DVD. Then start Disk Utitlity from DVD and erase the disk then you should be able to install Snow Leopard.
Remember that everything will be removed from the disk when you erase it and install Snow Leopard so backup first.

  • Getting ready for Snow Leopard + Windows 7... help?

I have a currently 300g Hard Drive in my early 2008 MacPro (with 50g free), and really want to go to a dual-boot w/ Snow Leopard and Windows 7 here in a few months.
I have another internal drive that's 750g, and I'm thinking of using that one as my startup drive. That way (obviously) I can partition it and have more room for both operating systems (2/3 Snow Leopard, 1/3 Windows)
My question is this: What's the best way to go about this?
Should I go ahead and partition that drive, and then copy my current system onto the 2/3rds I want to use for Snow Leopard, and then turn off my computer and swap the drives?
Anything to "look out for" when partitioning? I've never done it before...
After I swap the drives, I automatically start-up on the correct partition?
Also, is 750g too big for a startup drive?
Maybe stupid questions, but I'm really looking forward to both of these operating systems coming out, and I want to make sure I get it right!
    tia,
    e

I actually want to put both on the 750, so I can have all the rest of my internals be 1tb each (i keep my video editing stuff on one, my audio editing on another, and my iTunes on the other).
Just make sure you've got all that stuff backed up. Lots of people get a false sense of security, thinking "My stuff isn't on the boot drive, so it's safe," but this couldn't be further from the truth. Maybe this is unneeded advice, but just in case, I'd recommend reading my [Mac Backup Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/backups> (or some other backup reference).
So... I just zap the 750, partition it in Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Clone my existing Startup Disk to the correct partition, and then "point" to that as my startup volume in SysPrefs? Right?
If you're using Parallels, rather than Boot Camp, partitioning is completely unnecessary. Other than that, yes, you've got it.

  • Wish List Updates for Snow Leopard

If you support any of the following, please send them to Apple's suggestion box.
I would like Apple to offer the following settings, preferably without third party fixes.  HOWEVER, feel free to respond with your favorite work-around solutions.  I need to learn Terminal!
    1. Safari - close download window upon completion
    2. Safari - remove ALL cookies and cached items when "resetting" same.  There are always a select few that have to be manually deleted
    3. Safari - have a built in video downloader/converter - Yes there are good third party solutions for this
    4. Safari - allow Private Viewing as a default option
1.Pointer options - Create an option in preferences to enable the pointer to automatically go the default option selection (as is possible in that "other" operating system.  You know, the one that pirated the window concept)
    1. Apple mail - #1 request is identify a way to allow the numerous superior email clients interface as seamlessly with other native apps.
    2. Apple mail - short of that, create a setting to turn off or allow a time setting to override an email automatically being marked as read if it happens to be highlighted with you open the app, thereby appearing in the preview pane. Appearing in the preview pane does not mean I have read it.
    3. Apple mail - provide an option for creating return receipts requests
    4. Apple mail - What it that box that appears around blocks of text in received mail that makes editing more difficult than it should be
    5. Apple mail - Provide a tool to apply the formatting to other parts of the email (sort of like the paint brush tool in that OS with the "W" word)
    6. Apple mail - If I label a sender as "not-junk" do not put label mail from this sender as Junk.  I do not want all senders in my address book.
    7. Apple mail - If I label a sender as "JUNK" future mail from this sender should also be JUNK, no?
    8. Apple mail - Create a rule that allows "Bounce" as an option
    1. iPhoto - I know I must be missing something here, so please chime in -
How or what can I do to save photos into iPhoto when I am not using iPhoto.  The most common annoyance for me is saving photos off email attachment or from the web.  There MUST be something I am doing wrong.  Where is the "Save to iPhoto Library" option?
    1. QuickTime - Please bring back QT Player 7!!!
    12. I know we mustn’t use "other" browsers, but in those rare events that it happens - how nice would it be to have a native bookmark sync option or common folder?
    13. Finder - allow more columns in the viewing options for Spotlight
Please feel free to add to the list.

So may words, so little help.  You do realize that they call this a Support Community, right?
    1. Safari - close download window upon completion
Mine already does this, and I'm sure you can do it in Snow Leopard, too.
When you refer to "mine," what OS are you referring to?  Are you willing to share your knowledge on where I might find this capability?
    3. Safari - have a built in video downloader/converter - Yes there are good third party solutions for this
That's not the job of a browser, and it's not going to happen. Keep dreaming.
Thanks again for the helpful advice. I am impressed with our willingness to help.
    4. Safari - allow Private Viewing as a default option
You can turn it on yourself. There's also AppleScript, or assigning a keyboard shortcut.
I am very aware of how to turn it on.  I would prefer to leave it on by default.  Care to share your AppleScript knowledge?
Apple mail - provide an option for creating return receipts requests
It's been there for years—where have you been?
Thanks again for the poweruser tip, very helpful.
    1. Apple mail - #1 request is identify a way to allow the numerous superior email clients interface as seamlessly with other native apps.
That's entirely your opinion, which isn't shared by the vast majority of Mac users.
I am sorry I do not share you opinion, nor did I know you speak for the majority of Mac users.  Perhaps with your superior guidance I would become a power user too?
Where is the "Save to iPhoto Library" option?
Have you tried looking at the options given to you when you receive email with attachments? There's a Save button in the Header section that gives you the option to save the image to iPhoto.
And how does this sugggestion help when downloading a photo from the web?
Perhaps if you spent time getting to know your Mac and OS X, you'd find that there aren't nearly as many "issues" as you seem to imagine.
Yes, and I perhaps if you would share a bit of your superior knowledge I would agree.  That was my hope in posting to a "support community."  You put a fair amount of effort into your criticism.  Just "imagnie..."

  • Continuing font encoding and tag issues with snow leopard and CS4oI

I am looking for help with a font handling issue with snow leopard and cs4 Indesign. Despite numerous calls and hours on the phone neither Apple nor Adobe has been helpful. I have had this issue open with Adobe since oct 5 but they remain totally unresponsive to date. I need to be able to use Type 1 fonts and do the following , export a pdf from Indesign with the following attributes: 1) xml tags for stories and objects. 2) have the fonts encoded as ansi and embedded.
Some additional information  - exporting to ps is not an option as it destroys the xml tags. and doesn't guarantee that the fonts won't become CID or some other odd encoding.
    As it stands now,
Leopard (10.5.8) and CS3 creates ansi encoded fonts with xml tags.
Leopard (10.5.8) and CS4 creates ansi encoded fonts with xml tags.
Snow leopard and CS3 creates ansi encoded fonts and xml tags
Snow leopard and CS4 creates custom subsetted fonts and some xml tags.
If any one has any advice on how to force specific font encodings from CS4 pdf exports so that i can preserve the tags and get the correct fonts I would be grateful.

The font encoding is not a function of the OS version, but rather of how a font is internally encoded and the content you are representing with the font.
If you are seeing a difference between MacOS 10.5 and 10.6 with the same Adobe software, it probably has something to do with use of a system font that is somehow different from one version of the OS to another. InDesign does not use any of the OS' font handling software.
Assuming that the fonts are embedded, subset or not, what is your issue with whether a font is ANSI-encoded, custom-encoded, or CID-encoded? It should make no difference for purposes of workflow beyond InDesign for software that adheres to the PDF specification (including all versions of PDF from 1.3 and up to 1.7 plus ISO 32000-1 PDF and all versions of PDF/X and PDF/A).
Neither InDesign or any other Adobe application provides user choices for the encoding since it shouldn't make a difference. The encodings chosen by Adobe's core technology components are for a combination of optimization and to support proper text search, copy, etc.

  • Trackpad Sensitivity Issue After Snow Leopard Upgrade

I have a Late 2008 MBP/2.53 Ghz and prefer to use tap to click/2 finger secondary tap.
After upgrading to Snow Leopard (to v.10.6.6 as a clean install), linked webpages and files/folders often open when a second finger touches the trackpad accidentally even when pressed very gently.
The same happens if a third finger touches the trackpad if I am scrolling through a page with 2 fingers. Sometimes when pausing/hovering over a link, part of the page surrounding the hyperlink will highlight and can sometimes the link will activate without any additional accidental touch. I have slowed down the tracking and double click speed in preferences, but this makes no difference.
The funny thing is, some days the problems are worse than other days, the trackpad seems to have a mind of it's own! These issues never happened with Leopard, and it is very frustrating.
Post SL upgrade, I have also noticed that the Magsafe adapter sometimes needs a little wiggle before it will start charging, and occasionally, the red 'close' symbol at the top left of the page does not always activate and I have to start tapping elsewhere before trying to close the page again.
My parents have SL installed natively on their MBP (Spring 2010), and their MBP does not encounter any of these problems.
Disk Utility shows Javavirtualmachine differences, which I trust can be ignored as the differences are non critical, or could these issues be having an effect on SL?
I have AppleCare which expires in November and I want this sorted out asap. I could just revert back to using Leopard, but as I have paid £30 for Snow Leopard it would be a waste of money.
I'm not sure whether my AppleCare cover these issues seeing as SL wasn't natively installed on the Mac when purchased?
If anyone can help with these issues it would be very much appreciated.
    Many thanks

After installing SL, i cannot get wellsfargo "account login" to work for any account of mine, other financial secure sites work fine, i.e. fidelity or vanguard, I can access the main screen of wellsfargo but login fails ... screen i get says Safari can't connect to the server and as follows: "Safari can’t open the page “https://online.wellsfargo.com/das/cgi-bin/session.cgi?" plus some more gibberish stuff.... i tried switching to firefox and it works fine .... never had any trouble before ..... tried safari reset, safari empty cache, and maintenace that applied ...... still no luck!! hope they get this bug fixed , my other computer an older mac mini works fine. any help????? never had any problem before SL

  • Why can't Firefox set permissions for Snow Leopard Server Web-Site Wikis

I've established a web-site for collaboration of planning for a state-wide NGO and a local citizens-government oversight commission.
I'm using Snow Leopard Server v10.6.4, to drive the web-site, which includes the use of wikis.
In creating a wiki and setting permissions, I find that I cannot set permissions for users or groups to 'read only' from the default 'read & write' while using Firefox. However, I CAN set them to 'read only' using Safari. And, once the permission has been modified in Safari, THEN it can be modified in Firefox.

    Solution found at http://michaeljin.wordpress.com/2010/01/05/locked-out-of-mac-os-x-server/
It’s blog update time! Updates have been a little scarce lately, been super busy with getting trophies on PS3
Anyway, recently encountered the following with a Mac mini server running Snow Leopard Server:
Despite being able to ARD / Screenshare the Mac mini, I was unable to get any further than the login window. Authentication credentials are obviously valid. No weird access permissions have been set. However, the weird thing was, I can connect to the server via Server Admin tools (from another Mac) and all other services were running without a hitch.
After much head scratching it turns out to be a sACL (Service Access Control List) issue.
    This thread solved the mystery!
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1654864
To save you the trouble, I’ll lay it out here. I cannot take credit for this, but Randall can!
Open Server Admin on a computer (any), and connect with the local admin to the machine.
    Select the server and authenticate.
Select Settings, then go to Access. You’ll want to make sure that Login Window and SSH have the local admin account listed if you select the option to “Allow only these users”. For now, I would suggest making sure all services have “Allow all users and groups” selected.
If (as in my case) it was set to Allow All in the first place, simply toggle the settings – back and forth.
    Save.
Try logging in again… should be a good one!
