Appletalk or IP Printing?

Should we still be using Appletalk in the 10.4.5 environment?
Setup: We have a small office network with everyone on 10.4.5 but have our old HP LaserJet 4000 for printing (on Local Zone). It comes and goes from the network, especially for those mobile staff members who come and go from the network with laptops (their old link to the printer in their list doesn't work).
Our network is compiled of a 2 D-Link GigaBit 10/1000 switches, G5 Server, DSL modem with static IP, and the D-Link Gaming router.
It feels like I should have the company buy a new printer that can use IP printing because it feels...OLD to have to turn on and off Appletalk to print.
Reactions?
Tips on new printer for our network?
Thanks
Jake

Like they told you on that other web site, moving to IP printing is pretty easy. Start by setting the IP address of the printer to a static value outside the DHCP range (example - all computers get IP addresses in range 192.168.1.10-50, so use 192.168.1.100 for the printer). I don't know that printer (does it have a front panel that allows you to set the IP address?), but I know two other ways to set the IP address. Use the Classic App HP LaserJet Utility (included in HP's OS 9 driver installers). Or, from the OS X Terminal, use telnet - type:
telnet [current printer IP address]
(and then follow help instructions)
The problem you are experiencing with appletalk is because Apple has changed appletalk, on the way to phasing it out.

  • MacBook, AppleTalk and PostScript printer

I can't print to my PostScript printer from my MacBook any more because AppleTalk has been disabled. When I go to the Network panel in System Preferences to turn it back on, I keep getting a drop-down message window saying 'Your network settings have been changed by another application'. I can click 'OK' to make the message go away but it just comes straight back. By strategically clicking in between re-appearances of this message I can navigate to the AppleTalk tab but I can't click on 'Make AppleTalk active', it just keeps switching back to the AirPort pane every time I try. Internet access via wireless router is fine but I would like to be able to print again from here.
The set up is a 12-in Intel dual core MacBook running 10.4.11, connecting via AirPort to a Belkin ADSL router, LaserJet 6MP printer connected to the router via Ethernet and an Asante Ethernet-to-LocalTalk adapter that works fine with my desktop Mac running 10.5 and two older iBooks on 10.3 and 10.4 (and used to be fine with this laptop too). The problem arose after using the laptop with another wireless network - my brother took it out of range and then was unable to reacquire the signal. He then ran some kind of network configuration utility without asking me (he doesn't know what it was, he's not Mac literate but presumably it was something that the Mac suggested) and ever since I've had this AppleTalk problem.
FWIW I've tried to create a new network location using the Network Setup Assistant and that just seems to get stuck at the 'configuring' stage.
    All suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi
Quit out of all applications and issue this command in Terminal:
    sudo rm -R -v -i /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
When prompted key yes to all the entries. Follow this with this command:
    sudo reboot now
On successful login enter the Network Preferences Pane and reapply and desired settings. Before running the above commands make a not of any bespoke network settings you may want after the restart.

  • Wireless Printing: for Mac and PC

I am running a home wireless network. The AEBS --> Linksys router --> Modem. In addition, there is an HP LaserJet 2100M attached to the router. So the problem is I need to be able to connect my Macs and my wife's PC to the printer. I have no problem with the Macs - they are running through AppleTalk. Using Printer Setup Utility the location shows up as "Local zone". I think the problem may be that the PC doesn't recognize "AppleTalk".
So the question is how can I get the Macs and PCs to both connect to the printer?
I have tried using HP LaserJet Utility (OS9 vers) to change the settings on the printer. When I try to assign a manual TCP/IP address to the printer it states that "valid IP addresses must be entered for manual configuration" (even though the address should be valid: 192.168.150.101 on my network). therefore, I have to use the "Automatically obtain TCP/IP config from the DHCP server". I have also downloaded the HP LaserJet Utility for OSX. This doesn't seem to do much, and doesn't include the same options as the OS9 version - as far as I can tell it just uses the Apple "printer setup utility".
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Thanks
    Rob

The PC does not have to use Appletalk to communicate with the printer. If Appletalk works with the printer, let the Macs use it. After all, if you never changed anything on the printer, but just used it out of the box, there is no reason why you need to change anything for the PC.
You should just set up the PC printing on the network as if the Macs were not there, using whatever protocol the printer and PC want. You are probably just having a problem configuring the printer interface on the PC. Be sure that you are trying to communicate with it through your network interface, not through the printer port, although that should work, too, if your PC is connected that way.

  • Printer Not Showing Up In Add List again.

I made a mistake and accidently deleted my printer from the Printer List (I was removing other printers). It doesn't show up when I try to add it again.
Here is what I have done:
    1) Removed the com.apple.print.PrintingPrefs.plist and com.apple.print.PrintCenter.plist
    2) Downloaded the latest drives from the HP site (It's an HP Officejet Pro K550)
    3) Logged out/Restarted (several times)
A funny thing has also occurred.
The drop down that usually holds the printers that can be added has looks like this:
    AppleTalk
    Bluetooth
    Windows Printing
    HP IP Printing
The blanks above are present. There are 3 blanks above the HP IP Printing and one blank below.
The blanks can be selected but not added (I thought it might have been a naming conflict and the printer was just not listing).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for your time.

    Welcome to the forums!
You don't say if you installed after downloading the Printer you deleted, but I suspect it's one not showing, and that you need to reinstall.

  • HP 2100TN, JetDirect Server, Appletalk & OS 10.4

I have a built-in ethernet local network using a netgear hub, 3 Apple computers and HP2100 laser printer. When running Panther, I could print when connected to the internet. That is I could print an email and not lose my connection to mail. When I upgraded to Tiger, somehow the printer required appletalk to be activated. Appletalk cannot be activated while I am on the internet (DSL connection), so I have to switch back and forth from being on line to go off line to print. HP says there should be no problem. Is it a setup with the printer? Is appletalk required to print over the built-in ethernet connection. All three computers have the same problem. It is becoming increasingly frustrating to have to constantly switch back and forth using the system preferences. Going from Appletalk enabled to DSL with appletalk disabled.

I think I need more info. Is that really a hub - or a router? Does only one computer at a time use the internet? The best/safest solution will be for you to have a router.
If you don't have a router, do this:
Go to Syst Prefs > Network > Show Network Port Configurations. Single-click Ethernet and then "Duplicate." Name it something useful like "Local Net." Apply and now go back to Show "Local Net." Give it a local-only IP address - try 192.168.4.4. Turn on Appletalk in this setup. Turn off appletalk for the other ethernet.
I don't use this - because I have a router that also provides a firewall for my entire local network - so I may have missed some specific detail. Please try it and come back with questions.

  • Where is Bonjour! or shared printer???

    Hi everyone,
I decided to use my old iMac G4's upgraded hard drive to use as extra space for me and my girlfriend. I also decided to connect my old Samsung ML-1210 printer to the iMac G4 and use the "shared printer" option with my girlfriend's MacBook and my newer iMac.
Now the problem: the MacBook (running 10.4) sees the shared printer (I go to File: Print, then select in the list "Shared Printer" then ML-1210) and prints to it. It works well. However, the iMac, with 10.5, cannot see the shared printer. I went to the "Add printer…" box, and then clicked on the + button. The new window that appears has different options: Default, Fax, IP, Windows, Bluetooth, AppleTalk and More Printer. Nothing about a shared printer or "Bonjour!". Using Apple's help menu, it says I should go to that window and see all the options I've mentionned above, plus Bonjour!, which is not there. I even tried to customize the menu bar to see if the Bonjour button was just removed, it wasn't...
I tried using "IP" to connect to my old iMac but it does not work. How come something that works so well and is so simple on 10.4 doesn't work on 10.5? Usually Microsoft steals its ideas from Apple, not the contrary; it should just work...
    Any ideas?

  • The selected printer connection method is incorrect. Select the....... ERRO

Just upgraded to 10.5. I'm setting up a few printers and a plate maker. Got everything setup as far as I could tell but one machine wont work. It's an ImageRunner 8500 from Canon. When I try to print to that printer I get this:
The selected printer connection method is incorrect. Select the correct printer connection method in printer list, and then try to add the printer again.
Not what thats about. In the printer list, It shows up there with everything else that is connected via Appletalk. I got the PPD for the Konika Minolta CPP500 installed and it prints fine... any ideas? Thanks,

    Hi John
I tried Appletalk but that printer does not appear. However LPD does work. I think the problem was on checking my other Macs in the office, there is no way of telling whether they are connect via IPP or LPD as the set up appears the same, i.e. IP address. When I tried to add my the printer again, I had forgotten how we set it up originally.
Many thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

  • Appletalk network through Linksys seems impossible to set up...

I wonder if anyone might have an idea why I seem unable to get an Appletalk network set up between my MDD G4 1.25 and my new iMac with Leopard?
I'm trying to establish an ethernet network through a Linksys Wireless-G 2.4 543 mbps router.
I've followed all the steps involved... I've set both computers to:
    Appletalk on
Share printer in the security pane
    Automatically configure the ethernet
I've loaded the printer driver in both computers.
But I've had no luck whatsoever with any of it.
I can't even get the network to show up in the Network Utility.
I can't get the printer to show up in the add new printer setup...
I've tried unplugging the router and changing the ethernet cable plug-ins.
It all sounds so easy in the instructions at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106658
Does this sound like a hardware problem?
    I'm totally flummoxed....
    Thanks for any ideas...

"Anyhow, I've turned on printer sharing, Appletalk, no-sleep with both machines on and the printer on... and still I can't get any sign of an Appletalk network showing up."
What sign are you looking for? I think you're being distracted by all this talk about Appletalk. You won't automatically see the disks of the other computers, nor will you automatically see the shared printer from the other computers. Once computers are on the network, which your are if, for example, you can browse the internet, then in order to see each other's hard disks you have to mount them.
The following describes 10.4; I don't know how much different it might be on 10.5. If I remember correctly, it was much the same in 10.3, but it's been a while.
On computer #1, in System Preferences, Sharing, it will tell you something like "Other computers on your local subnet can access your computer at ...", and some name will be in place of the ...
On computer #2, in the Finder's "Go" menu select "Connect to Server." Type in the name you saw in the preference pane on #1.
If the printer you want shared is on #1, then on #2 you have to go to the Printer Setup utility and look for the shared printer there. In my limited experience, it's not too hard to find a shared printer in the Printer Setup Utility.

  • 10.4.6 server: print jobs vanish (mac & pc)

    setup:
    - private network (192.168.1.1/24)
    - 1 mac os x server, 1 lpd printer with static addresses
    - 1 mac os x client, 1 winxp client with dhcp addresses (from router)
    services on server:
    - afp (for network homedirectories, mac only)
    - open directory (for network users, mac only)
    - print and windows (for print server, mac and pc)
    config:
the server connects to the printer via the lpd protocol and accepts print jobs to the queue via appletalk, ipp and windows printing.
    problems:
    1) jobs sent via appletalk or windows printing vanish. they appear as sent on the client's print queue but never appear on the server's queue nor the logfile. jobs sent via ipp work, though.
    2) adding a "networked printer" on windows xp doesn't work. the "wizard" sees the print server and his queues but upon adding a queue refuses to connect to it, citing some access rights problems.
    questions:
    1) has anyone successfully connected from winxp to the print server and managed to print a document?
    2) how?
thanks a lot for your time,

    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm not 100% sure about this but I think if you're providing SMB printing it is spooled through SAMBA and the /var/spool/samba folder. What the server is using to print to the printer is secondary.
And beware of the not using any Administrator account on the Windows box for printing. Might also be other permissions problems acting up.

  • Selected printer connection method is incorrect

Whenever I try to print to our networked Canon ir5020 copier, I get a message "The selected printer connection method is incorrect. Select the correct printer connection method in Printer List, and then try to add the printer."
I have tried it with PDFs and Word docs and still get the same message. If I click okay on the above message and the job spools to the printer I get another message "connection method not supported -9786".
I have also deleted the printer and added it again, via IPP.
I have tried printing from another user account on the same Mac and get the same. Other Macs on our network can print to the Canon without any problems.
I am using the Canon PS driver version 1.50, which appears to be the most up-to-date. I have also tried downgrading to version 1.40, which is the version the other Macs are using and it still does not work.
As a last resort I have reset my printing system and added my printers again – and I am still getting the same message.

  • Canon IRC 3200--cannot print after adding printer to Mac 10.5.4

I have searched and read all the relevant topics but still I have problem printing to the irc3200. I have a Mac (Leopard) with Parallels (running Windows XP.) I installed PCL5e on the Window side and can print with no problem. On the Mac side, I initially used the "Appletalk" to install and can print, but as some of you know, using the Appletalk limits the "print menu" that you can see on the Mac. So I deleted the Appletalk printers, installed the Canon PS 1.81 driver and added the printer with queue name LP. I added the printer successfully, was able to see the "Special features" tab, but every time I print, it will say "Printer in use. Waiting for Print job to finish" and the job will just sit in queue forever. I then added the printer again with queue name "Direct" but the same message occurs when I try to print.
I would very much appreciate any advice. Thank you.

If you used the More Printers > Canon IP (PS) option to add the printer queue, then this will use LPR/LPD protocol. With the error you are getting, you may find that the LPD service has been disabled on the copier. Note that Windows will default to Port 9100 (RAW) for its protocol, so that explains why that would work.
You can open the Remote UI page for the iRC3220 by typing its ip address into your web browser. With the home page open, select the Additional Functions tab. You may be prompted for the iRC3200 system administrator ID and password. Enter this if you know it or contact your IT if you don't.
When the Additional Functions options appear, select Custom Settings. On the right hand pane, under Network Settings select LPD Settings. Ensure 'Use LPD' is enabled. If it isn't, check it then OK the change. You will have to restart the machine for the service to start working.
The other thing to check is that the imagePASS print controller option is not fitted to the iRC3200. This is a white rectangular metal box that would be hanging on the back of the copier. If you have this, you will not see all the options I mentioned above. Instead you will see the home page for the imagePASS (probably the C1). If you have the imagePASS, then you cannot use the Canon PS driver. You will need to use the PS driver for the imagePASS-C1.

  • Printing issues on network printer (Xerox Phaser 4500DT)

I need to be able to print to a network printer which is a Xerox Phaser 4500DT. It is simply networked from its IP address. I have the latest driver. Every time I try to print anything the job automatically goes on pause. If I click resume, it does print, but this takes time, every time I print. The URL is "pap://*/Phaser%204500DT/LaserWriter".
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Since upgrading to 10.5.6 I can no longer print multiple jobs to any of my Phaser 4500 machines(N/DT)? If the printer is clear, the job will spool and print.
If more than one job is sent or multiple users print at the same time, the local print queue is changed to 'PAUSE PRINTER' - I have tried printing via Appletalk, Bonjour & IP printing, the same problem occurs.
Why does 10.5.6 not allow you to spool and queue a print job any more? This is VERY frustrating in a busy office with multiple users attempting to print at the same time! - Any advice would be gratefully received!

  • New Mac Network - DHCP Won't assign IP to LaserJet 5M Printer...help?!?

I just moved office locations and have a newly configured network. My network consists of 2wire 2700hg DSL modem which has a 1000mbit router connnected directly to it (and hardwire network hub distributing from there). There is also a new Time Capsule plugged directly into the DSL modem.
I've plugged my LaserJet 5M both into the DSL modem and the Time Capsule to get network connection. This printer is supposed to receive an IP through DHCP, but it is now always reading 0.0.0.0. Before I moved, the network assigned it 192.168.0.101.
Why can't the printer receive DHCP with this network? I thought that maybe it's due to not being plugged into the hub, but Time Capsule surely shows and works on the network? I wouldn't think that this would matter.
I did cold reset the printer, but still nothing.

I just resolved the problem, but not in a way I was expecting. While plugged directly into the Time Capsule, I configured the printer through AppleTalk and the printer showed up and worked fine. In the past I had to assign it through the JetDirect card a specific IP address, but for some reason it's showing up without this anymore.
I don't understand it, but I like that I can now print!

  • MacBook - Newbie: Need help on printing wirelessly to XP shared printer

MacBook - Newbie: Need help on printing to XP shared printer
Bear with me please. I read tons of articles on this but somehow as a newbie to MAC (girlfriends sick daughter), I am missing something. 10.5.2
Currently, she can print directly if we plug in the HP Deskjet printer directly via USB to the MACBook. No problem.
When we first got the MACBOOK I tried setting up the MACBOOK wirelessly to recognize the workgroup where the printer was attached via USB to the Windows XP PC. However it printed out garbage since I did not know there was a difference between XP printing and MAC (Gutenberg/gimp printing/drivers).
Now I know there is a difference.
But in reading various instructions, I no longer can find how to connect the MAC to the Windows workgroup. Note we do have a printer set up currently as USB-HP Deskjet on the Macbook (not sure I need to delete it yet).
I went to System Preferences on MACBOOK and clicked on printers, more printers. In the drop down box was CANON, APPLETALK, IP HP printing and Firewire. There was no WINDOWS selection as I saw in other online web instructions.
So not sure how to proceed to find a way to:
    1. Connect to Windows workgroup (click on what exactly), step by step please!!
    2. Add correct HP Deskjet 5490 printer (perhaps there is one with Gutenberg or perhaps I need Gutenprint-really not sure what I am talking about)
Thanks so much in advance. Fiancé's kid has had her cancer recur in a different place and someone was nice enough to buy her a MACBOOK as a gift.
    Sincerely

  • Trying to set up print server.

I have a Powermac G4 with OS 10.2.8 connected by ethernet through a router to an IMac PowerPC G3 with Mac OS 9.0. I have no trouble with file sharing and Internet use, but I can't get print sharing to work. The printer is an HP Laserjet 1320, and all of the necessary software is installed on both computers. The printer is connected to the Powermac, and works fine with that computer. I went through all the necessary steps on the Powermac to set up the computer as a print server. The IMac has Appletalk active, and Printer Share enabled. According to the Appletalk configuration utility, Appletalk is connected via ethernet. However, when I try to set up the printer on the IMac through the Desktop Printer Utility, no Appletalk zones can be found. What's the matter?

Juniper, welcome, take a look here, step 1. is the one most over looked.
