Applets 'n win versions??
...ok, i created an applet (i copied out of a book, because i'm learning) and i tested it on my computer by creating an HTML file and using the <applet> tag with WinME. It didn't work, so i figured it was a problem with me not having the Java Runtime Environment, so i downloaded that and it still did not work. Being used to errors on diff. op sys. i went and tried it out on my WinXP laptop, and it worked. Is there a diff with how Java is interpreted between diff op. systems?? i don't think it is the IE version, because i updated the ME box to IE6, which is being used on the laptop. Ne input iz appreciated, thanx

[How?]More than 1 Wine version simultaneously
As a frequent Arch user, I want to broaden my knowledge and skills with Linux - this time, I'd like to be able to have 2 Wine versions - new 1.1.38 and stable 1.0.1. Right now I only have 1.1.38 installed under /opt/wine/. In q4wine it's possible to set different Wine versions, so it looks like something entirely doable and not that hard.
I looked under the PKGBUILD of wine-stable at AUR to see where it installs (I hoped for something like /opt/wine-stable/ to make my life easier), but it didn't tell me much. Because of my newbieness, I don't understand the relevant part:

But it doesn't look like it's getting installed to /opt/wine-101 or something close.
So, my questions are:
1) Where does wine-stable from AUR install as default?
2) How can I change it to install the binaries to /opt/wine-stable?
3) Will it read my current virtual drive ~/.wine/drive_c/ with any problem? Or I need to setup a separate drive?
4) Will there be two separate instances of winecfg?

I Ctrl+C'ed it, because obviously it needs sudo permissions. But I don't know if I should run makepkg as sudo, because 1) it could be dangerous, since the PKGBUILD is yet unproved to be safe 2) there is something like fakeroot to use in PKGBUILDs, no? How do I do this? -
[SOLVED] Downgrading Wine versions?
The game I'm trying to play keeps crashing after several minutes of play. Upon researching the problem, it seems that this is a confirmed problem with Wine version 1.1.38, which is the version currently in the AUR. Downgrading to 1.1.37 supposedly fixes the problem.
How do I do this, however? I know pacman has a downgrade feature but as I understand it only works off cached packages, and I never had 1.1.37 installed on this system so I don't think it can downgrade for me. On the AUR page I didn't see any link to old versions. Supposedly the game in question works flawlessly under 1.1.37 (it had gold and platinum appDB ratings on old versions, dropped to bronze with the latest).

Alright I see the part of PKGBUILD you're talking about. I changed the source line but how do I get the sum for it other than downloading it and calculating it myself?
Also, it says "sha256sums" and not "md5sum". I assume that I cannot calculate the md5sum and have it work there? -

Wine-multi -- multiple wine versions side by side
ever updated wine to find that <application X> doesn't work ? ever noticed how some apps in the wine appdb are PLATINUM with one version of wine and GARBAGE with another? here's the solution for all you archites.
download this PKGBUILD, and change the pkgversion to whichever wine version you need to install, makepkg, pacman -U wine-multi-<tab> and you're good to go!
just make sure you read the install output

Yes it should work transferring PSE10 from Mac to Mac. There is a download link below for PSE10, which your friend could use. There is a formal licence transfer process but it’s not necessary for your friend to register the product (activation is sufficient) although he couldn’t benefit from future upgrade pricing without registration. Serial numbers typically can only be registered one time.
Boxed versions of PSE are normally multi-platform with disks for both Windows and Mac; so the serial number is the same. Downloads have tended to be single platform only although I believe the current version PSE12 will work on both Windows and Mac with the same serial number – boxed or download.

Did the markup for java applets change with version 4.0.5
Starting with Safari version 4.0.5 java applets are not rendering correctly. The Java coffee cup loading image pushes the actual content down. Was the applet tag markup changed with this release?

First, try a different user account with Safari and see if the same thing happens. If it does then it's a system wide issue, not just your user account.

How to load an applet with older version of JRE?

I'm writing an applet which should read the username from the user's system using System.getProperty("user.name") method. I've JRE 1.4.2 in my browser, and it's throwing a AccessControlException whenever the applet is trying to read the "user.name" system property. So, I want to load this particular applet with an older version of JRE, say JRE 1.3. I've tried various approaches like,

I've not tried the simple APPLET tag because we can't specify a java plugin using the APPLET tag.
In both the above methods, I'm still getting AccessControlException. In Java console, I'm seeing Java Plugin as 1.4.2.
Can someone tell me is it possible to read the "user.name" system property from user's machine using Applets? If yes, how?

Tarun.Applets are prevented from doing certain things - reading data is one - to maximize security. You can either add permissions to the computer that the applet is running on, or you can sign the applet.

Installing Win version on Mac via Parallels
I'm currently running Photoshop CS2 and the trial version of Illustrator CS4 on my Mac. I'm going to be purchasing Creative Suite for Windows and installing/running this via Parallel, which allows you to run a Windows OS and it's programs on a Mac.
My question is...will I have any problems in installing or running CS4 for Win seeing as how I have other Mac versions of the same programs on the same hard drive? I plan on uninstalling these to make room for the new ones, but of course Adobe leaves behind difficult to locate files.

Installing a Mac version of PS that was upgraded from a Win version
I don't seem to be able to get through to Adobe today on the phone at all, so would like to try here with this question. I just got my first Mac last week after 20 years plus on the PC. I've been upgrading my Photoshop for WINDOWS since v.4.0 (current version I have is CS4 for Win), and could upgrade to CS5 for Mac, which is about $500 less than buying a new (Mac) version outright. My concern/question is this, that after inserting the upgrade DVD, the install program will ask me to insert the "qualifying" CD/DVD which in my case will be a Windows PS install DVD. I do not have Windows and/or Parallels, so would the Mac be able to read/recongnize the qualifying Win Photoshop program to complete the Mac installation?
JoeI don't know if Adobe still does cross-grades, but when I switched from Windows to Mac years ago, I was allowed to purchase full Mac versions at the upgrade price. Since the Mac software wasn't an upgrade box, it needed no previous disk or serial number to install it. Better yet, I was also allowed to keep using my Windows versions if I wanted to.
You do have to do this directly through Adobe so they can verify your legal purchases of the Windows software you're doing a cross-grade from. -
