AppleTV 1st Gen   Sony HT-CT550W = No Audio

Here's my setup:
Xbox 360, PS3, AppleTV 1 -----> CT550W  -----> Samsung TV
All connections via HDMI. Everything works with the 2 game consoles, but with the AppleTV I get video, but no sound.
If I leave the TV and Apple TV on and turn off the CT550W (allowing the HDMI signal to pass through the 550W), the TV shows the video and I get sound from the ATV through the TV speakers.
I've tried powering everything off and starting again and switching the ATV to a different HDMI input on the CT550W. Do dice. Whatever inputs on the CT550W I use, the PS3 and XBox360 work, but the ATV gives me no audio through the CT550W.
I haven't tried going component out of the ATV to the TV and optical out of the ATV to the CT550W, but I might have to if I can't get the HDMI to work. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Is this with all content or just some content.

  • AppleTV 1st Gen and new computer

How do I connect AppleTV 1st Gen to different computer than the original laptop that I synced with? The laptop has very little space left and I want to synch with larger desktop. Do I have to disconnect it from laptop some how? The desktop has seen AppleTV, but it won't let me sync anything.

Thanks for the reply! I copied the iTunes Music folder to a removeable drive so I don't lose any of the info before disconnecting with AppleTV.
It is always wise to have a backup of your itunes library media on external drive etc - you never know when you might have a hardware failure on a computer/AppleTV etc.
Disconnecting AppleTV from the laptop itunes will not delete the content in iTunes on the laptop, but will wipe media synced to AppleTV from iTunes.
The big thing to ensure is that any purchases of music/video etc you made directly on AppleTV have synced back to the sync (laptop) library - right click on the AppleTV in iTunes on the laptop and choose Transfer Purchases to check if unsure.  In theory, things that haven't synced back should remain while stuff synced from the computer to AppleTV will go, but I don't fully trust it and best to ensure direct purchases are safe before disconnecting AppleTV.
The important point to get across is that AppleTV 1 does not operate like a backup of media - there is no simple or official way to recover media from it say your laptop iTunes hard drive failed.

need to put it on the desktop, can I just copy this into the iTunes Music folder on the desktop and it will now have all the appleTV stuff?
Don't do that (just copy into new itunes folder) as iTunes won't recognise the stuff you've copied in this way.
Either import to iTunes using iTunes' File>Add to Library and navigating to the iTunes media folder on the external or drag and drop this folder onto itunes to copy it over.
Another way to do this you might want to try is via Home Sharing - enable in iTunes on the laptop and desktop and this will allow the desktop iTunes to copy stuff over from the laptop - either all or selected content you choose form the Home Shared library icon - this will probably be slower than using the copy on the external drive, but is a good way to copy content from one machine to another across the network.
After adding your media to iTunes you need to go through the steps Winston and I outlined to change the sync computer entry on AppleTV under Settings>Computers.

  • AppleTV 1st Gen has my entire music library loaded however my iTunes library was lost when my external hard crashed.  My question is can I copy the content from the AppleTV 1st Gen back into my iTunes on my iMac?

    AppleTV 1st Gen -
I have a rather complex music/movie library system, as well as the ability to listen/watch the content throughout my house thanks to Control4 - extra vegetables and other various 3rd party equipment.  I moved my entire music library onto an external hard drive to free up space on my iMac...then my dog got tangled in the cord and pulled the external drive from my desk to the floor destroying the hard drive...(yes I've already attempted to have the content recovered by specialists- no such luck.
My question is... Is it possible to copy the content from the AppleTV 1st Gen back into my iTunes on my iMac?  If so step by step directions would be greatly appreciated!
    thanks to all
    Tom

Thanks very much I have contacted them via this. Just hope they respond quickly- rather annoing! Greatly appreciated though

  • HT4847 Videos on iPad shown as iCloud - stored on iMac and AppleTV (1st Gen)

I have just received an email from Apple notifying me of renewal of iCloud 20gb storage due at end of September 2012.
    Sorry about following convoluted description.
Not previously purchased by me but provided on Closure of my MobileMe Family pack service.
I removed all MobileMe photos, documents etc.  Mail, contacts, notes etc al transferred across but probably only 250Mb.
Removal of MobileMe service was a retrograde step by Apple in my opinion.
I don't use iTunes Match, Photostream etc so no need for much storage required above the Basic 5Gb.
I do add videos to iTunes which are stored on my Mac, and "synced" to my iPhone, iPad and iPod.  I also sync these to AppleTV (1st Gen).
If these are loaded these on to the iPad it appears to backup these to the cloud. If I disable this backup option on the iPad it "deletes" the videos.
Can I store these Videos on to the iPad, iphone and/ or iPod without invoking iCloud backup service?

Just a comment that the issue with Cars 2 may not be the same as the original one at the top of this thread. For starters, the TV programs that I bought are hardly new releases. (They're from the early 60's, and have been available on iTunes for at least a year.) The initial download plays on the linked iMac, but when transferred to the AppleTV fails authorization. Deauthorization of the iMac, reauthorization, and waiting for the content to be transferred back to the AppleTV clears up the issue (and appears to be the only thing that will do so).

  • MacBookPro8,2 (AKA Early 2011) will not Sync with AppleTV 1st gen

I have a MBP (MacBookPro6,2) purchase Dec 2010 and a new Thunderbolt MBP (MacBookPro8,2). My plan is to give the "Older" MBP to my daughter who has a PowerBook G4.
Upon receiving the new machine, I used Apple's Migration Utility to transfer all my data and settings from the 2010 MBP to the 2011 MBP. All my iTunes Media is on an External Hard Drive that I connect as needed via FireWire 800. iTunes is version 10.2.1 on both machines.
A problem arose when I tried to sync new iTunes content from the 2011 MBP to my 1st gen AppleTV. The 2011 MBP will not sync, giving the Error Message: "Apple TV "My Apple TV" is not responding. Check that any firewall software running on this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689."
I "Uninstalled 'Little Snitch' and turned off the Apple firewall on the 2011 MBP; (i left them alone on the 2010 MBP as there were no problems with that set up on that machine.) No joy. I reset the Apple TV to Factory Defaults and then tried to SetUp and sync from the 2011 MBP again; but again no joy.
From the 2010 MBP, I "Restored" the Apple TV to factory setting, updated the ATV software and then was able to sync all my data with no problem.
Now, the 2011 MBP is running a special version of MacOS 10.6.6 (10J3210). The 2010 MBP is running the Release Version of MacOS 10.6.6 which is Build 10J567. Other than that, the two machines are clones of each other.
Any ideas why the 2011 MBP shows this error and refuses to sync? I did call Apple Support. They had no clue and referred me to a Genius Appointment.

I got the same problem Driving me nuts!! And of course, no help from apple...

  • Syncing appletv 1st gen

i'm totally new to appletv, so bear with me... i just got a 1st gen 160gb version.. just a basic question when syncing..
the first time i did a sync, i put all my itunes music (maybe 20gb), a few southparks, all my photos, and some podcasts on there.. total of about 25-30 gb (sorry i didn't pay attention to the exact amount).. it took quite a while, on a wired connection.. then i went to add some movies from my external hard drive on my network, and from what i can tell, it wiped the appletv clean, and started to re-sync everything.. like starting from scratch.. not just leaving what was already on there in place, and adding movies.. but deleting the appletv entirely, and re-syncing all the stuff that was already on there all over again, and adding the movies after that.. is this how it will do it every time?
i guess my point is, with my iphone, you make moderate changes, it updates only the changes, not wiping it clean and taking forever to re-sync everything?!?! i could be totally off base, or just not understand any of this. but it takes so long to sync this appletv, if i wanna add a few things, i don't wanna re sync for a million hours to add a few new photos, or songs, cuz it does a bare bones from scratch delete and re load

Firstly if you want control you should ensure that you have Custom Sync enabled for the AppleTv by going into the Device setup tabs for AppleTV 1 i iTunes.
Be aware that by default content not synced over to the hard drive will stream automatically when itunes is running and appear merged in the AppleTV lists with the synced content - this can confuse as when you shut iTunes it looks as though lots has disappeared from AppleTV. (you can choose show only synced items in Settings in itunes)
So firstly confirm you've got custom sync set up in Settings tab in iTunes.
You cannot drag and drop to AppleTv like a custom iPod management, you must do it via individual tabs in AppleTV device in iTunes.
Pay attention to the dropdown optinons too which may cause watched material to be replaced by unwatched when AppleTV space is low.

  • AppleTV (1st gen) Power

I've got a 1st gen AppleTV purchased in the UK but that I'll be donating to a family member in the US providingit will work with replacement power supply purchased in the US. Will this work?

yeah all apple ac products auto detect the 230volt vs. 110volt and adjust
so it's only a cable issue and the atv1g use a std. cable same as my ps2 and my cdplayer and ......

I sure hope Apple liked all my money on buy's, rentals, etc on a product that is still working flawlessly, don't understand why they wouldn't make at least one more update in relationship to adding Airplay and Netflix to their 1st generation product.
why should they? should they continue to add functionality until the end of time?
it's a 5 year old product and it's had many updates since then.
you are not entitled to any new updates other than to ensure that it still does what it was originally advertised to do.

I want to understand your point. I think you are saying, that we should buy products that we are told will get better as we do get software updates. Your idea is if it is first we should not trust it to take advantage of newer software? Because if that is the case I must conclude that a 2010 iMac will only do what it what it was advertised to do. So I should not think the next Software update to 10.6 Mac OS 10.7 will not run on it as it was not advertised to do that. Not even a program coming out the day after I buy it? If so I find so much less value +(the usefulness of something considered in respect of a particular purpose)+ in that product. That means I don't buy then Apple is happy? I am I right or did I misunderstand you?

  • The Bourne Legacy won't sync/stream on AppleTV 1st Gen.

    Hello, Everyone.
I recently just purchased "The Bourne Legacy" from iTunes Store. This is the first time I purchased movie and I did it with my computer, through iTunes (10.7 (21). When the download was done, I could watch the movie in my iMac through iTunes but I just couldn't find a way to sync/stream the movie to my AppleTV 1st Generation.
    What I've tried:
    - Selected my AppleTV (under "Devices") - clicked "Movies" tab - unchecked all movies - checked only "The Bourne Legacy" - sync. No result, it wouldn't sync.
    - Restored factory setting of my AppleTV - set my AppleTV to pair with iTunes - all my movies are there EXCEPT the purchased movie. I wouldn't stream.
Could please anyone help me? Any tip/suggestion would be much appreciated. I want to see this movie in my tv. Thanks.
    R.E. Hartanto

It was purchased on iTunes and there is a lot of space on ATV. I using less than 25 of the space. Not sure if I can download from iTunes to Apple TV.

  • Why isn't the serial number for my appletv 1st gen displayed in itunes

Iv'e noticed that in itunes 12 the serial number for my first generation appletv is no longer displayed. I also can no longer sync purchased movies to the apple tv.
I've tried relinking to the library, signing out and in of itunes store, and finally i did a factory reset. itunes does sync some of my music, but i still have some problems with certain files saying that they aren't compatible.

this is a user helping user forum so I would not wait around for somebody at apple giving you a reply
but one thing is that hd movies from itunes will likely not sync because the atv2g did 720p 30fps rather then 1g's 720 24fps and later appletv's do 1080p 30fps which of cause the 1g Apple TV can't play

  • AppleTV (1st Gen) not authorized to play newly-purchased content

I'm hoping that someone here can help. I have a generation 1 AppleTV that up until very recently (likely coinciding with the installation of Lion or the iCloud-enabled version of iTunes) was working fine. Now every time I purchase a new TV show from iTunes and transfer it to the AppleTV (just as I did previously), I get a "not authorized" notification. All software is up-to-date, and I've tried everything that I've seen suggested online including completely restored factory settings on the AppleTV and rebuilding.
The only thing that seems to work is to deauthorize the linked iMac, wait until the AppleTV automatically resyncs, then reauthorize the iMac. The problem with this is that iTunes then resyncs all purchased content back to the AppleTV, which takes quite some time. That in itself wouldn't be so bad, except that I have to repeat the process each and every time I buy new content from iTunes. (And heaven help us if Mail decides to update during that time, or someone opens Safari. If either of these happen, we get beachballs and all connectivity is lost on the iMac, requiring a reboot.)
Any ideas? Needless to say this is kind of putting a damper on future iTunes purchases from this point forward.
    Thanks much.

  • How to restore content purchased on AppleTV (1st gen.) and lost in syncing?

I am an Apple TV (first generation) user who lost all my content purchased directly to the Apple TV when I finally was able to get iTunes on my PC to recognize the Apple TV and then synced it. I did not know or understand about the "reverse sync" that I first read about in these support pages. When I first got the Apple TV, I had a very bad router and just could not get the PC and the Apple TV to talk, so I proceeded to purchase a number of TV series and movies directly onto the Apple TV. I have the receipts. Do you know of any way to get them back or re-download them? There must be a way. I'm talking about several seasons of TV shows and favorite movies for my kids, so it's a big loss.

Open itunes and go to store->My Account->Purchase History -> Find all the receipt numbers for your missing content, copy and paste them into a text editor. Next find one of your purchases and click "report a problem". Explain that you purchased itunes content on your atv1 and it didn't sync back to itunes properly, paste the receipt numbers.
Apple is under absolutely no obligation at all to do so, however their unofficial policy is to reflag these purchases for download (at least once, don't count on being so lucky a second time so make sure you have a good backup strategy this time). Note that a lot of ISPs with "unlimited data plans" actually have hidden caps starting around 60-100gigs. If your atv was near to full you might be hitting those caps when you redownload all the content in one fell swoop.
    G'luck.

  • AppleTV (1st Gen) dead?

When I plug it in nothing happens. Literally.
    No lights
    No sounds
    No signal
    Nothing
I'm guess the power supply went. If I crack it open (warranty is already expired) is there anything I could maybe try? I am quite handy and not afraid to open it up. Any help much appreciated.

Probably dead, but do check the fuse in the power lead or use another from another device.

  • AppleTv 1st gen seems to overheat

    Hi,
Not sure if it's over heating, I get these symptoms:
    1) the device gets very hot
    2) after watching movie or playing for a while it freezes
    3) when not in use it freezes or is in some type of sleep mode and won't wake
Generally I pull power out, wait a bit and it restarts.
I am running latest OS and patches.
    Any ideas?
    Regards
    Adam
    I

It's hard to say what the problem might be. They run hot by design and mine has always been erratic in that it occasionally reboots itself or has to be rebooted because it becomes unresponsive. It also becomes unstable after playing HD video longer than an hour and has to be rebooted.
If the problems are happening frequently it could be an indication of impending hardware failure. If the problems are happening occasionally then it's more likely to be the general stability/performance issues that have plagued many ATV1s since the beginning of time.
