AppleTV 2 not in devices in iTunes

Hi there,
I know you can't sync to the new ATV in iTunes but isn't it supposed to show up in my list of devices like the ATV1 did? Just not sure if I'm supposed to see it come up under my iPhone or not....
Thanks in advance!

How do I downgrade the software then? I'm looking at the fix a lot of people suggested for when the AT2 no longer connects to the network time server (rendering it inoperable because connection to the time server is apparently required for ANY useful function). This is beyond frustrating.

  • Apple tv not in devices in itunes

This seems to be a common theme and I've been scouring forum posts and have found similar problems but thought I'd ask here as well:
We have a 2nd gen ATV that has worked fine for almost a year, with the occasional hiccup that was usually solved by resetting or unplugging power source and plugging back in.  In the last week, we have not even been able to use it for most things....here's are the problems:
-Netflix streaming and iTunes all work fine on our iMac and MacBooks
-we can access all of our iTunes music on ATV
    -home sharing is ON
-no access to any of the general or network settings on Apple TV
-no access to "sign out" of netflix on ATV
-we can stream Netflix shows and movies for exactly 2 minutes, then it shuts off, back to menu where you push play on ATV
-we can watch previews of Itunes movies, but we can't access the rent feauture
-we can watch previously purchased Itunes shows
& probably the source of out problem - Apple TV is not showing up as a device in Itunes on the main iMac.
When we try to connect it in Itunes we get the error 15006, which I've searched on here and found no solutions.
I'm at the end of my rope - we are not techies by any means, we have an all Apple household and shut off cable and now we literally can't watch any TV at all....I know Apple will try and tell me to buy Extended care if I call Support, which is ridiculous when this stupid thing only cost $99 to begin with....should I jjst buy a Roku?  Is this a fixable problem?  Do we need more bandwidth?  Why can't the computer connect to the ATV??
    Please help!!

If you can't get into the settings on ATV then I would suggest disconnecting it and restoring in iTunes

  • My AppleTV does not recognize my iMAC iTunes library

I have 2 AppleTV 3 connected via Ethernet. I have 2 desktops: one iMAC with OSX10.9 and a Win8. Both are connected to the same Airport Extreme. On both latest iTunes with home sharing is running. Now the wired thing: AppleTV always recognizes my Win8, even if its sleeping. My iMAC it does not recognize even if its not slepping, I do have to start files manually on my iMAC iTunes and send it to the AppleTV in order to be able to watch it. If the iMAC is sleeping (but not turned off!) it does not even recognize the home sharing, if iMAC is awake AplleTC rdcognizes it, but does not get beyond the selection of the iMAC and shows the waiting icon all the time. I went through all the (very poor) Apple support sites, haven't found anything that helps.
Also the Remote App on my iPhone or iPAD is not connecting to the iMAC, but to the Win8.
I had simialr problems before, it seems whenever there is an iMAC or AppleTV update it chages whether its working or not.  Anyone having a similar problem plus solution?
    Thanks!!

  • AppleTV is not playing media from iTunes

I have a 500GB+ iTunes library on a FireWire external. I have always been able to pull up my TV Shows, Movies etc from either of my AppleTVs. I have a 2nd Gen in my living room and a 3rd Gen in my bedroom.
Suddenly, over a week ago, both decided that they did not want to play any of my videos from iTunes any more.
I can navigate to Computers, select either Movies or TV Shows, navigate the full list in either... but when you press play, you get this...
The TV will sit and spin for hours upon hours.
Here is what I have done to try to resolve this issue...
Restored both AppleTVs to factory settings, updated to the latest available OS.
Logged out of Home Sharing on my iMac and back in.
Moved my AppleTVs to 5GHz WiFi
    Rebooted my iMac
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm going mad!

I have a very similar issue with a comparable time frame.  Mine eventually tells me that the computer is not authorized, although it is.  I can still watch content streaming from Apple's servers, but not streaming from my hard drive.  I'm on a Windows computer hosting the library, and had issues with jerky video for a week prior to this new issue.  I have rebooted the computer multiple times to no avail, and have even tried running iTunes with an administrator account.

  • AppleTV quit synching, no longer in iTunes Device List

Darn. Just realized my AppleTV hasn't synched to my MacBook Pro for 3 weeks.
In AppleTV settings, it shows that it is linked to: JP's BigBook Music. In iTunes, my music library is called: JP's BigBook Music
However, my AppleTV does not appear in the iTunes device list. I have "look for AppleTVs" checked on. I can stream music from my MacBook to AppleTV via AirTunes. I can connect and control the AppleTV from my iPhone.
What the heck? I'm tired of this.
    Jim

Wifi channels are approximately 5 Mhz apart, but each channel is around 30 Mhz wide, so unfortunately they tend to overlap which means that channel 4 (say) and channel 6 can still interfere with each other to a certain extent. How much they can interfere depends on the equipment, I have networks using channels 1, 4, 7, 10 and 13, so theoretically they all overlap, but I don't have any issues at all with my Apple tv's or any other equipment for that matter.
Other household equipment such as microwave's cordless phones, baby monitors, garage door openers and the like can all use similar channels and can be almost impossible to detect without specialist hardware. Additionally due to the nature of the Apple tv it is often located to other electrical equipment which might cause a problem.
If you've ruled out interference, it may be that the settings on your AP's need attention, however I doubt that I've just been lucky to the extent that I have numerous Apple tv's here at home and at work that have been problem free when others have gotten wonky units. I suspect there is a reason for your poor performance other than the Apple tv itself.

  • AppleTV not appearing/syncing in Itunes since the UK film roll out...

I know there are post on this already, but I've never had any problems at all with my AppleTV being recognized or syncing with Itunes since before now... I'd got a bit giddy with excitement over the roll out of the films on iTunes, so I decide to download a rented one from iTunes (no menu option to do this on the AppleTV at this point. The download went pretty smoothly taking an hour or so, and I was able to move it over to the AppleTv.
Interestingly enough the new Movie menu options had now appeared after being received. I had made sure that the AppleTV was up to date before this I may add and didn't have any further upgrades, so how did it get the new menu options?? So after that I noticed I was able to browse and buy films directly from the AppleTV ( but I have not tried this yet) Anyway...
I watched the rented film, and it was fine, all went smoothly, told me I had one more day to before I'd lose it... Shortly after watching it the iTunes I sync with on my MAC lost connection. Not a sign of it. Factory reset the AppleTV, re-installed iTunes. Nothing... Then I tried connecting from the AppleTV by syncing a new computer with the 'four digit code' And hey presto invoking that procedure brought up the AppleTV back in my devices on iTunes.
So.... Now all have to do is sync everything over again, fine, take a few hours I know. After three hours and more the sync freezes, so I cancel it. And guess what folks! No AppleTV in my devices as before.
Now as I say at the beginning of this post, I've never had a problem with syncing with AppleTV, I believe the introduction the films to iTunes has introduce a software bug, or maybe made an existing one worse!

Yeah ,this only worked temporarily. I don't know what's going on with my router and my AppleTV but it's proving impossible to reliably sync to the AppleTV when both the AppleTV and my iBook (the syncing computer) are connected to my router wirelessly. Sometimes, fiddling with the router fixes it, sometimes rebooting the AppleTV fixes it, but invariably, the time comes when I can ping and see the AppleTV from my desktop (connected to the router via ethernet) and not from the iBook (connected wirelessly)

  • AppleTV does not show up in Devices in iTunes on streaming MacBook Pro

    My setup:
    - AppleTV connected wirelessly to the wireless router (Apple Extreme N Base Station).
    - Windows PC wired to the router and set up as machine that is sync'd to the ATV.
    - MacBook Pro connected wirelessly to the router and set up as a streaming machine.
    - All machines run iTunes 7.3.
The AppleTV appears as a device on the Windows PC. No problem there.
However, the ATV does not appear in the Devices list on the MacBook Pro 99% of the time and so I am not able to select it and change the photo albums I want to link. It occasionally appears. But I have not found a pattern to why it appears and disappears. Even when it does not appear in the Devices list, streaming from the MacBook Pro works just fine. So even as I am streaming, say, a podcast from my MacBook Pro, the ATV never appears as a listed Device.
I can make the ATV temporarily appear by unlinking the MBP from the ATV and relinking it. During the link process, the ATV appears in the Device list. But it disappears as soon as the code is entered in the MBP.
    Confounding problem.

    how would
it be if your mac continued to show every network
device, firewire/usb drive that it had ever connected
to whether they were still connected or not.
Yes, it would be annoying if EVERY device that my Mac had ever connected to did show up all the time even after they were disconnected.
However, there are some classes of devices that you do want your Mac to remember and show as available if they are detected active on a network. An example would a Bluetooth device that you have deliberately paired and designated in the Favourites list. If it was subsequently decided that this device should no longer appear, then removing it from the Favourites list does that.
In my opinion, the AppleTV should fall in the same category. Since pairing is required and subsequent dissociation is possible by removing it from the iTunes list of allowed AppleTV units, then it should appear on iTunes' list of Devices as long as it is detected on the network. If the ATV is unpowered or if the PC moves onto a different network, that that ATV should not appear in the Devices list. There is an advantage for the logic to be implemented this way for the reason I have mentioned in an earlier post (i.e. being able to change the list of photo albums designated as available for streaming without having to go to the ATV, select the source PC, then going back to the PC to change the list).
But again, just my opinion. It's always good to discuss these things so that others can see different opinions on an issue.

  • 1st gen Apple TV not in devices list in iTunes

My 1st generation AppleTV is no longer showing in the devices list in iTunes on my Mac Pro.  I have read several pieces of advice and performed the following long list of actions but I am still stuck and unable to sync my Apple TV.  I hope someone has a new suggestion for me?
The AppleTV has had the computer removed from the connections setting.  It has been rebooted and left on the connect a new computer screen with the numerical password visible.
The AppleTV can be seen visible in the iTunes of my Macbook Air running 10.8.3 and the iTunes version is 11.0.2.  I have not 'clicked to setup' since my main library is on my Mac Pro that used to sync.  I can ping appletv.local from my macbook air succesfully which returns an IP address.
My MacPro is running OSX 10.7.5 and iTunes 11.0.2 and one day the device failed to show in the devices menu.  I cannot ping appletv.local from my Mac Pro but I can ping the IP address returned from the ping on my Macbook Air.
At first I removed the device from iTunes preferences and removed the computer from the AppleTV which allowed me to see the AppleTV on my Macbook Air but not my Mac Pro.
Secondly I used AppZapper to uninstall iTunes and reinstalled from a fresh download as r4ecommended here -> http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10329494-263.html  I also used Pacifist to reinstall the Apple Mobile Device Service after removing the service as per the instructions here -> http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747  My iTunes library is back as it was but my other devices were originally missing until I connected them via USB to re-enable the wifi sync.
I can see my shared libraries between my MacPro and my Macbook Air.  I can also use Airdrop between them and can connect between them as usual.  I have disabled the firewall on my Mac Pro just in case and I have no VPN or antivirus software that blocks any communication.
My network setup is a little unusual since I have my ISP router as the DHCP assigner connected to an Airport Extreme base station that acts in bridge mode to distribute a wifi network across my home.  I then have a powerline adapter connected to the airport base station to send network around my home to places where wifi is weak.  My macbook air connects to the wifi.  My MacPro connects via a switch in my office to a 2nd powerline adapter.  My AppleTV connects via a 3rd powerline adapter and can see the internet fine (it plays youtube videos for example).  None of the network devices have any ports blocked on them and since the Macbook Air connects to the AppleTV as expected but the MacPro does not then I do not think it is network related.
So I can only assume there is something wrong with my MacPro being unable to recognise my AppleTV as an AppleTV rather than just another device on my network.  Anyone else got any ideas of what to try on my MacPro to get it to recognise the AppleTV?

I am still experiencing this issue - can anyone help?
Since writing the above replies I have also tried to downgrade iTunes to 10.7 via these instructions -> http://arstechnica.com/apple/2013/03/how-to-downgrade-from-itunes-11-to-version- 10-7-on-your-mac/ but that did not work.  iTunes worked fine but the AppleTV was still not in my devices list on my Mac Pro

Rentals can only play on one device/computer at a time.  Have you tried to play on the computer and still have that window open?

  • Apple TV (2nd gen) not showing up as a device in iTunes

    Hi all,
I have this problem. The Apple TV (2nd gen) does not show up in iTunes under devices, and I really don't know why.
    Mac OSX 10.6.5
    iTunes 10.1
AppleTV 2nd gen with latest update installed
Network is a WiFi Airport Extreme (Mac and AppleTV are indeed on the same private network)
Airplay works, home sharing works fine. Remote App on iPad and iPhone works.
But the AppleTV is not showing up under devices.
I had a 1st gen AppleTV which I reverted to "factory settings" before unplugging. The 2nd gen ATV had the same name as the 1st gen at the beginning, but I changed it afterwards figuring it might be related.
Under iTunes > preferences I had the AppleTV tab. But I did read somewhere on Apple's site you have to "delete" the AppleTV from the list. So I did, and now the tab cannot be found anymore...
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you in advance.

    iMat77 wrote:
I seem to recall though that I have seen a screenshot somewhere on the web where iTunes showed the ATV 2nd gen as a device.
Not seen that, but the old ones have a logo that look (to me) like the new one, or at least a small darker grey than they are - they show up nicely in the iPad/iPhone Remote app though
If you are right it would be huge disappointment!
I believe I am correct as I've got new/old AppleTVs connected to 3 Macs and a dual boot Mac Pro currently, and the new unit has never appearede under devices.
.... I really HATE the interface organization right now. Why on planet earth do I have to go under "devices" -> "computer" -> "music" just to play some music?
You, me and many other AppleTV 1 users. I think they'd finally got it right in 3.02 for AppleTV 1 which is a much nicer user interface. Basically now the majority of the top level columns are unused by many people who don't rent but want to playback theit iTunes media.
I firmly believe Apple see this new AppleTV as a relatively cheap accessory for iPads/iPhones/iPods to show video/photos via Airplay on your TV without using a computer.
Secondly it's a vehicle for pushing itunes Store rentals, but for the majority of worldwide users they can only get Movie rentals, and Netflix is of no use bar in a few countries (US/Canada).
I would have much more preferred that a "music" tab (it also applies to all other tabs, movies, tv series and so on) and then just a list of all "home sharing" connected computers from which I could pick the one where the music is stored. Or even, and being Apple it surprises me they didn't implement it, just the list of the available music on my network, with a little tab indicating in which computer it is located.
Yes that would make absolute sense - a dynamic list of available content based on connected libraries that changes as new libraries appeared on/left the local network.
The new menu organisation is quite shoddy to me, ut many users new to AppleTV like it and rave about the devices not knowing what the old one could do - it's a good device don't get me wrong, but I still prefer the older units except for their power consumption and the fact I feel they are more likely to fail due to their high temps and mechanical hard drives.
But here I'm venturing FAR off topic.
    Don't think so, it's a valid comment.
    Use this:

Thank you for your help anyway. I wait for confirmation of somebody else just to make sure...
    Fair enough.
