AppleTV 2 snowy picture

While my AppleTV is booting, I can see the picture clearly. But after the boot, the picture gets snowy and intermittent. Unplugging and trying again does not help. I tried different HDMI cables and even switched HDMI ports on my TV, nothing seems to work. The AppleTV is almost 2 years old. I'm not keen on buying a new one every 2 years. On a side note, my Roku 3 is doing the exact same thing and they started acting up at the same time. That's why I thought it was my TV but my FiOS box works fine. I moved cables around and changed ports, but nothing works. Maybe the FiOS box doesn't require a handshake but the ATV and Roku do, so that's why they aren't working? Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks. David

UPDATE: I connected my ATV to another TV and it works fine. It appears as if my TV is kaput.

  • Blu-ray disk plays with snowy pictures at the beginning

I need help with a new issue with my burning (Win 7 Pro, CS5.0 from Adobe's original installation disks, LG BD-rewriter; different BD-R, BD-RE blank disks: Sony, Philips, Kodak).
While playing within Encore with the "Preview From Here" feature doesn't show any problem, burning (either directly from Encore, or from file with ImgBurn) and playing for the TV on the Blu-ray player (Panasonic DMP BDT330), every once in a while, the beginning of some menu items plays a snowy noise intermittent with some black frames for anywhere between 3 - 6 seconds. Playing back several times, this issue happens at the beginning of different menu items (and mainly when playing a playlist with the same items).
Playing commercial Blu-ray disks, or my older Blu-ray disks, there is nothing wrong with the playback.
It seems to me that this is something either that Encore or the LG OD does. Before I start reinstalling the CS5 suite (removing it with Revo first), I would greatly appreciate any idea about the cause of this behavior.
Also, it would help me to eliminate some of the possible culprits if I could play back the Blu-ray disk directly from my BD drive. I would appreciate any suggestion for a good and tested software (free, or paid for) that would not interfere with Adobe (or mess up my "pristine" OS ).
    Thank you very much,
    Laci.
P.S. My guess at this point is that the culprit is the BD burner. While commercial DVD/BDs are "pressed", home burners use PCM (phase change memory - and also memories from my Intel years working on their reliability). If the burner laser gets older/defective, then the melting/recristallisation of the PCM lmemory element might not be "perfect", and when it is read, it sometimes gives the wrong response (even with ECC which I am not sure they employ in DVDs).
I am still waiting for, and greatly appreciate, some advice before I rush to buy a new burner or reinstall the whole CS5.
    Thanks,
    Laci.
P.P.S. Sorry for all these information most of which is probably irrelevant (especially the PCM memory part ). I opened (should have done first) the BD disk on my computer and checked the m2ts files in BDMV > STREAM > *.m2ts. They all (including the motion menus) play flawlessly on the computer with WMP. So, the burning and playback of these files causes no problem. The problem most probably comes when Encore builds the navigation. Since the motion menus on the disk also play without any hickups, I assume that it is the Encore itself that causes these problems. I am going to reinstall CS5. (The still open question at this point is, how it is possible that this snowy few seconds before some of these m2ts files does not always happen at the same m2ts file playing back the same BD disk on the TV.)
I would still appreciate some input from the expert users.
BTW, is there any program out there whith what I could substitute Adobe Encore? (This is the only weak spot of the entire suite ).
    - Laci.

the beginning of some menu items plays a snowy noise intermittent with some black frames for anywhere between 3 - 6 seconds. Playing back several times, this issue happens at the beginning of different menu items (and mainly when playing a playlist with the same items).
What does menu items mean? I assume that it is menus themselves, not timeline movies?
What could Encore do that would create this? I don't know, but assume that it is more likely to do with disk seek problems and the like. And yes, where things are put physically on the disk can be an issue. But burn/disk issues are more likely.
Have you tried this on a different player?

  • Fizzy, grainy, snowly picture on importing from mini DV

Okay can import my mini DV now.
But the quailty is really bad. I wait a better clear pic. Help

How old is the tape? How it was stored could mean a loss of signal from the tape it self. Snowy picture could be the recorded tape may have lost some of it magnetic signal and causing snow. You can also try cleaning the the camera with one of those cleaning tapes as well. If the tape was recorded with a different camera then the one you are importing I found that sometimes it does not play back correctly, with some loss of quality.

  • AppleTV- how to keep the screen saver going indefinitely...

..or at least until it puts itself to sleep.
I have a lovely AppleTV whose floating picture gallery kinda makes me (and my in-laws) happy.
But for some reason it goes away after 15minutes (+/-).
It does not bear any relation to the sleep time of the device (1 hour).
There doesn't seem to be any setting that accounts for this.
    I'm totally bewildered!

It just goes dark. It just...goes away.
It's like it sleeps but it's not set to sleep for 1 hour.
    Weird.

  • IPhone 4 call quality

So me and my partner upgraded our o2 contracts yesterday and got the iPhone 4.
We had iPhone 3GS' before that.
When talking to other people and hearing them through the ear piece, it was crystal clear. (With iPhone 3GS')
People used to comment on how good the sound of my voice was.
With the iPhone 4, when I hear my partner and he hears me, it is as if we are talking from far away or in a cave... It is no where near as clear as the iPhone 3GS.
When speaking to friends who are using a 3GS they sound clear but say we sound as if we are in a cave...
Is this the noice cancellation making our voices sound strange?
    Any ideas?

Signal strength is one thing but signal quality is something else, and is much more important with digitally-encoded communications transmissions.
As an example, in the old analogue TV days (now phasing out in favour of digital in the UK), if there was interference on the signal, all you got was a somewhat snowy picture and fuzzy sound while the interference persisted, but picture and sound nonetheless. Now with digital TV you will get picture freezes and no sound if there is interference that degrades signal quality (not signal strength).
With that in mind, and also seeing that GSM uses different transmissions from 3G, it may not be your iPhone that has a problem but it is more than likely the network and the specific conditions where you are when trying to make calls - unless, of course, the problem happens everywhere across a wide range of different environments in which case it is probably the phone that is at fault.
Assuming that you've checked coverage maps for your network operator then the next stop is complain to the network. After that, get your phone checked and replaced if necessary.
We are in a marginal 3G coverage area on O2 so the experience that you describe is very familiar to us.

  • How I got my TV@nywhere working

I got the card a while ago and had to solve many of the problems I read about on the forum.
    1. It took me 5 days of searching to figure out that the serial number for the MSI PVS player is actually on the label of the cd itself
    2. Having solved that, I installed the software and hooked up the audio cable, remote receiver and coax for cable tv. I got it sort of working, with good remote functionality but fritzy audio. Basically, if I changed the channel, the audio would die until I changed it in the settings menu of the pvs software. Oh, and I think I just got lucky on the whole infrared remote thing: mine works fine.*
    3. I solved the audio problem by installing the beta drivers that I got here and the updated msi PVS from here .
    4. I haven't noticed the lack of stereo, and no mpeg4 hasn't affected me .... yet. So overall, I think the tuner has better picture than my Voodoo 3 3500, more features, but worse performance (it's a pig loading for the first time, and channel surfing is out of the question).
    I'm running Win2KPro, SP3
    1.2 GHz Athlon, 512 of PC 2100
    on an MSI K7T266 Pro
    MSI GeForce 4 Ti 4200 TD64
    MSI Tv@nywhere
    (yes, I like MSI)
    Maxtor ATA 100 adapter
12GB total storage, DVD, CDRW, et cetra
    with:
    TV@nywhere beta drivers here
    updated PVS software here
    * I read in another post about someone with a nonfunctioning remote system saying that the indicator on the remote wouldn't light up. Score a point for good reporting of all suspicions, but unfortunately, the LED on the end of the remote is an infrared transmission diode. Unless you have some very special eyes, you shouldn't be able to see it light up. Radioshack happens to sell a little card that indicates the presence of infrad radiation, designed specifically for diagnosing remote problems like this.
ALSO, anyone having problems with the remote: Make sure it's plugged all the way in. It clicks several times and you have to push the plug uncomfortably hard. Also make sure you have the Intervideo WinCinema Manager running. It appears as a circular blue icon in the system tray.
I kinda wish MSI had expressed more judgment before deciding to release an obviously incomplete product like the TV@nywhere. Oh well, c'est la vie. Or something.

Well, I originally had stereo until I updated to the new drivers and my stereo went away.  So I retreated back to the original pvs drivers.  Not sure why the newer drivers are only mono.  Also, unlike most posts I read, my picture and sound quality are excellent.  I have a geforce4 4400, asus A7V-133 motherboard 640mg ram.  I ran a dvd and vhs through the inputs of the msi tuner card, all worked great, even recorded in vcd format (mpeg1).  I don't use the remote since my cable input comes from my digital TV cable box and I switch channels with that remote.   I understand everyones frustration with the drivers, software and docujmentation/support.  I am satisfied with this product, since it adds some more fun to my multimedia entertainment.
I did fine tune station 3 in my setup screen to enhance some color, just moved a couple of ticks.  But, I am not experiencing the hugh problems some people complain about.  (eg. snowy picture).  My am working with my friend that has a real crappy picture.  I have reloaded all my drivers and never once witnessed any poor video and audio.  My suggest is for you to keep playing with it.  Also, i am using ME.

  • 30-40+hours still waiting? here's how i got my working in 1hr.

well, i got mine friday around 7pm. setup phone through iTunes, got a couple activation emails, one that stated it would be ready on JUN 01 1am... well, today (sunday morning) my phone still didn't work. sat in cust server for 1hr... eventually said screw it, went to AT&T store.
the rep was extremely helpful (Jason - Westwood, LA AT&T)... he found out my porting request to sprint was never initiated and somehow tied up in god knows what.
he gave me a new simm card, setup an AT&T account and porting request to Sprint in the store... i then went home and activated my iPhone as if I was an existing AT&T customer.
As soon as I hooked up the phone, in 3 minutes I was making outgoing calls. He said it would be ~3 hours for the port request to finish.
hope that helps... it was 30+ hours for me of ripping my hair out.

  • Connecting MacvBook to a DVI Monitor.

I've purchased a Mini Display to VGI adapter for my new MacBook (2010), but my monitor (a DGM L-2254WD 22" LCD wide screen) shows a very 'snowy' picture (+rather like a TV set with the aerial disconnected+). Please can anyone tell me what's wrong, and, _more importantly_, how to fix it?!!

That's what happens when HDCP fails. But it's hard to say why that is happening. You best option may be to purchase and Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter and connect by VGA.

  • Airplay tab is missing

with apple product everything is always easy, right?
dear all, then i really need help and i am sure you are able to solve the issue.
here is the challenge to solve:
network is right installed on appletv and computers, firmware update on all machines is done - all is on and reset - tv also is on and connected.
the airplay icon apears in itunes it self and i can play music via appletv on the large screen as it is supposed to do.
same works with the iphone - here i even can browse the pictures.
    so far so good!
but there is no airplay tab in "displays" nor in the "menu bar" showing on my macs (details below).
i also would like to use the appletv for keynotes - pictures - documents....
but the airplay tab wouldnt appear - as often as i tried and checked.
shame on me if there is a simple solution - hundred stars for the one who can solve it.
i am checking dozens of comunities etc and hours already today to get a hint to solve that - nothing offers a solution within my ablilities to solve the issue.

this helped my question - fast!
i just would have loved the answer when asked if i can use the appletv system with my setup at the apple flagship store in beijing -  here i just got the answer :"sure. easy." and of course understandably for government reasons that is a fact in china: "but we cant sell it in the shop due to licensing issues here in our shop".
they know very well our purchases as i am unfortunately more often than necessary there with lots off harddisc failures (3 out of 12 within ~2 years), screen issues (faulty screen pixels right from the first day at the first imac24.5" we bought - did not even get a replacement one but needed to wait 3 weeks for repair , dust stains) mouse trackball failures and others.
i see -  now i need to either update my imac and macbook pro with mountain lion, or leave it. but what is even worse, only a minor group of our clients will be able to use the wireless converence system because they rarely have the latest mountain lion as well, and for them we installed the machine.
but to be fair - its my problem not to have gone through all tems on the webpage but trasted the genius at the service counter. what a world. shame on me.
by the way if you are interested:
do you have any idea what this pixel graphic issue could be on my mac book pro. it occures frequent, randomly after sleep periods and can not be forced to appear for demo issues. the screen first is black- nothing at all if i move the mouse pixels get visible as if i used a sponge to clean a dusty table. sometimes a complete square changes as well. once i cleaned long enough i find the insert window for the password and here we go as if nothing happened.
the issue appeared after the harddisk of my second last macbook pro broke just a couple of month old (4 or so) in jan 2012 (again get only a repair not completely replacement (took waiting time of 2 weeks and all the hussle to set up the temporary replacement on and later back - all our mac purchases are bought with extended apple care warranties btw).
when i finally got again problems with the harddisk and wifi connection the flagship store replaced the macbook in december 2012. brand new - mirrord system but after a couple of sleep modes the pixelgraphic appeared again.
no one at apple can help me - even the guys in brussels who were verysupportive could not give an answer. at that very same day though on the counter a client next to me came and had just the same problem.
i dont know what it is and what its caused from - but i had a couple of very unpleasant comments when some clients saw the problem at a presentation.
    cheers

  • VERIZON - Suggestions Please Read!

I currently have the SD DVR QIP2708.  I’m upgrading to the HD DVR and am not sure if these problems exist in the HD DVR, but would assume so.  I will find out tonight when it arrives.  These changes happened with the update that occurred in the Fall of 2008.
    1.  When you are watching a show and press the skip / next button (skips however far you have it set in the settings, ie 1 min, 5 mins), it doesn’t show the status bar (the box at the bottom of the screen that shows you your progress).  Unlike when you use the fast forward button.  It does the same in replay / previous.
    2.  When you are watching a show and are fast forwarding, if you press the skip / next button, it jumps however far you have it set, but doesn’t continue fast forwarding like it use to.  It stops unlike before, it would continue fast forwarding after it skiped.  This happened before the update and really miss this feature.
    Thank you!
    Curtis

Other annoying tidbits of the Fall 2008 update:
    - With the box's display, I set it to Show Clock (except when changing channels of course) and it randomly reverts to showing the channel number only.  Every couple of days or so I have to go to Set Top Box settings and change it from Show Clock where I've had it Show Channel and then back to Show Clock.
    - At times I could be watching TV and than all of a sudden I get a snowy picture while still retaining sound.  Turing the box power off and then back on solves THAT problem.
A call to FiOS tech support resulted in they're telling me these are known bugs with the last update and are being worked on.

  • Which PVR gives best quality?

    Hi everybody,
I have already posted a similar quest but I can't find it anymore so I'm posting another:
I want to transfer VHS video to DVDs and I also want to record live TV via my Mac in the best possible quality.
I have done some reading on 3 models of PVR machines:
myTV.PVR, Plextor's ConvertX 402U-NA/Mac and Elgato's EyeTV 250. Obviously each brand will boost it's capabilities to sell their product.
I've got cable TV and I have tried the myTV.PVR and I'm not completely satisfied with the video quality after I've created Disc Image for previewing. I'm still getting somewhat snowy picture quality and pixel movement from Disc Imgages saved from live TV recording. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
Before I return it, I'm looking for some feedback from other users, regarding any brand.
Does anyone have experience with these or any brands?
Thanks in advance for input or suggestions.
    Rio.

Eye250 is aimed at cable but"EyeTV 250 is perfect for conventional analog cable TV or aerial/antenna reception. Simply connect the co-axial cable to EyeTV 250, plug EyeTV 250 into a USB 2.0 or 1.1 port on your Mac, and start watching TV. It couldn’t be easier."
So if you don't have cable or even satellite and rely on an outdoor or even indoor antenna then you can watch TV on your Mac and the quality is dependent on how good your antenna is.
As for converting VHS tapes to digital data on your Mac, "EyeTV 250 comes with a break-out cable for S-Video and composite RCA video connections. So, EyeTV 250 is the right choice if you receive higher frequency channels, scrambled analog cable (premium) channels, digital cable, or satellite via a set-top box." It's also find if you receive normal broadcast channels.
"break-out" is just a buzz word. The cable they provide with the product allows you to connect your VCR directly into the EyeTV. Instead of offering connections on the PVR itself (as they did with earlier versions) the use a cable that offers the connection plugs for RCA connections (yellow, red and white cables) and S-Video. If you have those connections you can capture from your VCR.
If you were to find a copy of their earlier EyeTV200, the connections were directly in the EyeTV box and there was not 'break-out' cable. You connected the S-Video plug to the back of the EyeTV200 or the three yellow, red and white cables. With EyeTV250 you connect into a new multi-functional cable.
Either way, your connection from VCR to Mac is there, on the EyeTV 250.
As for the fuzzy cable capture you saw. First, did he actually demonstrate the recording of the picture and then displaying of the same picture? If so, when you saw the original cable picture was it the same quality as the resulting capture display? It should have been unless he had the recorded video displaying at a larger frame size then it was captured. If you take a jpg 100X100 and zoom in on it to 500X500 then yes, it will be blurry.
When it comes to "after use" you should have no problems with EyeTV250. I think the biggest problem you may encounter with digital TV is encryption (or proprietary scrambling). NO PVR can decrypt (legally) any program that the digital supplier scrambles "their way". MacroVison is an infamous encryption process used on many commercial VHS and DVDs but that has been broken or decryped by such devices (and software) as Sima, Facetcom and (the mac software) Mac The Ripper. It has been broken because it is a standard type of encryption. Today many private broadcasters are sending out signals that encrypt in a form that they can control.
So if you plan on recording programs over cable that are generally broadcast over VHF/UVF public airwaves then you'll get high quality shows/movies. If you want copies of HBO, ShowTime, Bravo, etc., they may or may not be encrypted by the broadcaster themselves and that would leave your PVR recording scrambled. Although you don't say this specifically I think that is what you are or may be seeking to [eventually] do, i.e., such as record Pay Per View broadcasts.
No, the EyeTV does not get too hot at all. My EyeTV500 is always plugged in 24/7. Never give it a second thought regarding heat, in fact I have several VHS tapes sitting on top of it. You should not have to unplug it because of heat at all. If so, send it back.
Yes, I'm very satisfied with the EyeTV 500. I didn't really need the EyeTV 500 and should have opted (at the time) for the EyeTV 200. I think the biggest difference between the 200 and 250 is the 'break-out' cable. Elagto was able to make a cable that would allow the connection of RCA inputs into the cable rather then directly into the EyeTV hardware product. That feature/function allowed them to make the EyeTV250 hardware a bit smaller than the 200.
When I went looking for information I got most of it from a guy named John Hudson. He had done a lot of research on converting VHS videos over to digital formats and found the EyeTV 200 would provide all the basic needs but they had moved on to the EyeTV250 and the price was too high (then). He went to eBay and found a used EyeTV200 and sort of chastised me for going with the EyeTV 500 (too much product, too much money) but since my company was paying for it, I didn't mind.
If you can, go to eBay and buy a used EyeTV200 cheaply. You can always resell it on eBay if you find it doesn't give you want you want. You might even go there for a low cost EyeTV 250 because people move up or on and sell them often.
Just a tip: Television and media formats are evolving. At first I made everything into a DVD but then found that was wasteful and unnecessary for 99% of video viewing. Once captured you can export via EyeTV it to a variety of formats: mpeg, avi, DivX, mp4, and more. Play each of those on a Mac with an iMac or Cinema display and the quality is amazing, even at full screen - and I have a 30" Cinema display from Apple. And full screen is great for group viewing but if it's just you at the computer watching "Saturday Night Live" or "Babel" on say a 20" or 24" iMac or larger display, you can fill up half the screen with the video and use the other half to surf the 'Net and tend to internet business.
And in those formats you can sock away five or six full length HD movies on a blank DVDR rather then one movie on a DVD (as burned by the DVD function of Toast). And Hey! Blu-Ray has arrived. Instead of 7Gig of blank space on a DVD we have 50Gig to play with!

  • Qosmio G20 - How do I get the tuner to work?

    Hi There
I have a Toshiba G20 Qosmio. :) It has windows xp professional installed on it.
I can access the Qosmio Player (pressing the tv button) when the laptop is off. I get a snowy picture.
I donnot have a remote. I am from South Africa.
Can someone help with the following:
    - Do I need a remote to tune to a psecific frequency?
    - If no, how do I tune to a specific frequency without a remote?
    - How do I access the user interface on the Qosmio player?
    - Can the Qosmio player be accessed from Windows?
    - Is there a guide on how to setup and use the Qosmio player? If yes, please provide download link.
    Thanks

    Hi
How do you want to watch TV?
What Qosmio player do you have?
As far as I know the Qosmio Player versions 4.3 and older do not support DVB-T signal.
Furthermore Im not quite sure if you would be able to receive the TV channels in South Africa if this Qosmio G20 has been released in European country.
The point is that the internal tuner would not receive the signals due to different PAL/NTSC settings.
    Regarding the channel scanning:
    Please check this thread:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=25430
In order to run scan you have to start the Qosmio player, press the F1 key and go into setup.
There you can do a scan. You dont need the remote control!
The other fact is that the Qosmio Player is not Windows based applications and you cannot start if from Windows. If Windows is running then you can use the MCE (Media Center) instead of Qosmio player.

  • Bt you view box problems

So frustrated as we have had a you view+ box for nearly a year and in the last few weeks it has been freezing, unable to start and snowy pictures. I managed to get through to bt and was told our box hadn't been updating on the server and I needed to do a update manually. I agreed to this as obviously wanted to get the box working again. I was told I would be doing a factory reset. I did query the necessity of a reset and asked about everything we had recorded to which I was told we would lose it all. Really disappointed by this as thought that I was paying to be able to record and watch when I like!
I asked how often my box should be updating on the server and how often I am likely to have to do a manual factory reset if it doesn't update its own server and told it would be every 3-5 months.
I went ahead with the manual reset with the phone operator talking me through the process and at the end the box was working again.
However before the week was over it started freezing again. I had already been advised by the phone operator I could text bt instead of calling as they would have all my history stored and be able to respond better than calling the centre again to explain the whole story. I did text and received a lengthy text offering me another reset to do.....which doesn't work either.
Completely unhappy with this and feeling glad my contract is nearly over so I can look around for another deal with better service as feel I have been ripped off paying to use a recording facility that I have to wipe clear every few months because my box can't update itself!!
I can't even write on here what my husband said when he discovered he lost all his stuff he had been looking forward to catching up on in the winter months.

Hi foxy46 - welcome to theforum.
    Worth having a read of
    https://community.youview.com/youview/topics/top_tip_soft_reset_reboot_power_cycling_maintenance_mod...
Generally the factory reset is the most drastic fix attempt. A factory reset will reset the box to a known  state  so that if it continues to fail afterwards it is possible that it could be a box component failure. A second attempt at a reset is probably a reasonable support approach - thereafter if the problem persists you can reasonably expect the support unit to progress to the next stage which might include an engineer visit and box replacement.

  • Can I use AppleTV to stream data (music, pictures) from a NAS and use an iPad as a remotecontrol via WLAN?

I want to use in my home the NAS as Central-Storage for music and pictures, and send that data via AppleTV on my stereo or TV. The whole I want to control with an iPad (or iPhone), which I will use as a remote control via Wi-Fi. Is this possibel?

Yes, you can use a network storage device for the storage of your content and use it on the Apple TV, but only as part of your iTunes library. So if your question is whether or not you can do this without using your computer or iTunes the answer is no.
